First generation students vs. others

Facts
First generation students usually come from working class families Some have parents who support their plans for higher education; others are under family pressure to enter the workforce right after high school Delay attending full-time/work while in school

Find it difficult to get used to college academically and socially


May start at a community college first

Feelings
Excitement and anxiety Responsibility: payment and returning home

Pride: first in family to attend


Guilt: having the opportunity

Embarrassment/shame: familys income


Confusion: application/ other college processes

Difficulty in Choosing
Parents want their children to have the best education possible Public schools are the most common Charter schools are a form of public school First generation students typically do not have a choice

First generation students are typically not as set as other students May not be able to afford catholic/private schools due to high loans Debate over if private/catholic pricing is worth it Education received

The Building Educational Strengths and Talents Learning Community introduces select, undecided, first-generation college students, to the culture of higher education. The Community encourages Achievers (students) to adapt their skills to meet the educational challenge in four ways..

BEST Learning Community


1) experimenting with the application of various academic support systems, in conjunction with required coursework 2) providing opportunities to interact regularly with faculty and advisors; 3) shifting the focus from managing distractions to developing strengths and interests; and 4) helping Achievers to form healthy bonds with other students, as well as with the larger community through its service learning initiative. Though the Learning Community is a one-year experience, Achievers will receive continued support from the program through graduation
