While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him.

Luke 24:15-16

Have you ever found yourself caught up in a personal crisis? A time in which everything that seems to be going on around you has increasingly become but a blur. You may have found that either you or someone you love has been affected so adversely by a physical, mental or emotional need that is indeed difficult to believe that the world just seems to grind to a stop. Something similar occurs with the disciples in the wake of Christs crucifixion upon the cross. Their hope perished at the point of his physical death. The Gospels give us varying glimpses of the resurrected Jesus. While most of these accounts of the risen Lord portray the disciples as being in hiding or withdrawn from society, Luke gives us an account where two of his disciples are out in the public eye and traveling. Cleopas is identified as one of the two and it is said that he had a home in Emmaus. Luke does not tell us who the other was. Picture with me the long, winding, dusty road, over uneven ground. The two are walking along. They are discussing the events of the previous days. No doubt, there is concern and conflict in their voices and conversation as they travel; more likely concerned with the question of what next than any other subject. Somewhere in the middle of their deep conversation a stranger joins them in their travel. Suddenly, the conversation dynamic changes as they begin to convey to the one who has joined them the things that are troubling them. Just as they conclude relaying the events of the previous days, we find them at Cleopas home in Emmaus. The day has been long and he invites the stranger to stay the night. The man welcomes the invitation. As they receive their supper the man offers to break the bread. In the moment that he broke the bread, their eyes were opened to whom the stranger was. They see for the first time that Christ had been accompanying them along their journey. It is in this revelation that they believed that he had been raised from the dead. So it is for us. While we find it hard to bear the burden of troubles, trials and difficulties that the world brings against us, we are reminded of the imperishable hope that was experienced by the disciples as they walked along a difficult road with a stranger. We can know that our God is greater than anything that we could possibly face in this life. Jesus came into the world not to destroy it, but to save it. It was this act of grace by God to provide for those who have believed in the Risen Christ the means of redemption. It is from this act of Love for us that we can know in our hearts and minds that when we walk the long, winding, dusty road, over uneven ground, that we too can know for ourselves that we do not walk alone. See you at church! Pastor John
