How to repair bad sectors on hard drive.

APR 20 Posted by Zerin

A while ago a friend of mine brought a laptop with a vista system that would not boot, i took out the hard drive and checked the smart data. Over 1000 bad sectors! note! " #ust witnessed a new record, $0%% bad sectors.& "t's a miracle the hard still knew it had (indows on it. )ut how did this happen* +et's go back to the start. "n the beginning, ,od created the chicken-. .o .o .o that's too far. /y friend was having trouble booting into his laptop sometimes, so " taught him the power of safe mode and restore. "t went well until finally it #ust would not boot no matter what. )ut this happened because they never did a check disk. (indows comes with a great and powerful utility called. 0heck 1isk " think i don't really remember&. +et's let /icrosoft e2plain how to

3o check the hard disk drive integrity in (indows4 "f you can still even use your computer& 1. 1ouble!click My Computer, and then right!click the hard disk drive you want to check. $. 0lick Properties, and then click Tools. 5. "n Error-checking, click Check now.
6asy peasy right* (indows 7ista89 is the same thing really, but if you don't believe me, read this. http488windows.microsoft.com8en!:;8windows!vista80heck!your!hard!disk!for!errors also, windows <P may ask you to reboot. =ou can also, remove the bad >ard drive, slave it over to another working computer, and use 1isk check on that drive. )ut let's go to the e2treme, this is what you're supposed to do on a regular basis, or at least whenever you don't shutdown your computer properly. )ut if you can't boot into your system, then it's time for +inu2 to the rescue. :se :buntu's 1isk :tility tool to view the hard drive's smart data. for e2ample.

use it.

:buntu in this case has fsck tool thingie that checks your hard drive for errors and such, even fi2es them, there's a gui for that too you know. (arning, the following will erase everything on your hard drive, but it will leave it nice and usable. Plug that bad hard drive in and boot your :buntu. .ow open up ,parted. :nmount that drive. 1elete that partition. 0reate a new e2t5 partition. .ow apply man apply! 3his will take around ten minutes maybe, after those ten minutes you will have a new e2t5 partition, useless for windows but useful for us to check for errors. .ow, while still being in ,Parted. ?ight click the newly creates 6<35 partition and click check. 3his will take forever depending on the si@e of your disk. ,o do laundry, watch some +ost reruns and figure out the meaning of life. (hen you are done, your computer should be done too.

3hen, delete the partition. Aormat it as 6<3$ ?ead what Bocko said below Bocko said C

"f it's an e2t$ file system, this should do it4 "f the filesystem is already mounted, unmount it by4 0ode4
sudo umount /dev/hdXY

if it's your 8 or 8home file system you may need to do it from a live cd& 3hen start the check by4

0ode4

sudo e2fsck -fpC 0 /dev/hdXY

the C!fD option will force a check even if the filesystem is marked as clean, C!pD will repair any errors and C!0 0E will give you a progress bar in the terminal.D P; also make sure the hard drive is formated as e2t$ for this to work. this will take a long time if there are many errors, also make sure you press y to yes and fi2 all the errors, i did this i wished i had added the !y switch to answer default yes to all the Fuestions but ended up using a mini mag flashlight as my !y switch. i only wish i had a camera right now. :pdate& /ehh this took too long i used this command.
sudo e2fsck -fyC 0 /dev/hdXY so far so good.

this is all the help i found, it was enough for me, it's enough for you.
.ote4 3his is not a real solution for badly damaged hard drive sectors, the real solution is to

buy a new one, but this will work if you are cheap and don't care much about reliability. 62tra .otes!& 3he sectors on >ard drives are stored in lists on a , +ist and P +ist, the , list the the bad sectors that keep ,rowing on there and are stored away for non!use. 3he P +ist is the list of bad sectors that came with your drive. ,o figure. http488en.wikipedia.org8wiki8)adGsector =ou can also use one of my favourite utilies to check the ;/A?3 data on your computer. http488www.almico.com8sfdownload.php
