RECAP: 2B Ty Kelly hit 2 home runs and starter Andrew Carraway tossed 6.0 innings as Tacoma defeated Sacramento 9-2 on Tuesday night. Kelly (3x5, 3 R, 2 HR, 4 RBI) recorded his 2nd career multi-home run game and first since July 15, 2012 vs. Carolina with Frederick (4x4, 3 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI). 3B Gabriel Noriega (3x5, 2 R, 2 2B) and LF Xavier Avery (3x4, R, 2 RBI, SB) each recorded 3 of the Rainiers 15 hits, while Avery and SS Nick Franklin (1x5, 2 RBI) each recorded 2 of the teams 9 RBI. Starter Andrew Carraway (6.0,6,0,0,1,5,WP) recorded his 2nd win of the season, allowing only 6 hits and striking out 5 in 6.0 shutout innings. REHAB ASSIGNMENT: RHP Hisashi Iwakuma made his first rehab start with Tacoma on April 27 at Las Vegas, allowing 3 runs (2 ER) on 6 hits in 4.0 innings. Iwakuma was placed on the disabled list on March 20 with a torn extensor tendon in his right middle finger. He did not appear in a game this spring. Iwakuma injurded his finger while working out in Southern California in preparation for spring training. Iwakuma finished his second Major League season in 2013 going 14-6 with a 2.66 ERA (65 ER, 219.2 IP) in 33 starts (23 quality starts). He ranked 3rd in the American League with a 2.66 ERA, which was the 5th-lowest ERA in Mariners history, trailing Felix Hernandez (2.27 in 10, 2.49 in 01) and Randy Johnson (2.28 in 97, 2.48 in 95). Also amongst AL leaders ranked T1st in games started (33), 2nd in innings pitched (219.2), 3rd in opponent batting average (.220), T3rd in quality starts (23), 6th in opponent OPS (.630) and T9th in strikeouts (185).
RAIN, RAIN, GO AWAY: The Rainiers have now endured 7 rain-altered games in 16 scheduled home dates so far this season. Since April 3, Tacoma has now hosted 6 rain-outs, and after Monday night, 1 rain-shortened 7.0-inning game. That stretch includes a total of 3 doubleheaders, six 9.0-inning games, six 7.0-inning games and one 7.0-inning game that went 9.0 innings. Prior to 2014, Tacoma had sustained just 1 rained out game since Cheney Stadium underwent a $30 million renovation prior to the start of the 2011 season. And prior to the teams 2014 opener, Tacoma had played 187 consecutive games at home without having to postpone a game due to rain. COACHING STAFF: Roy Howell is the 29th manager in Tacoma franchise history. Howell is in his third season coaching in the Mariners organization after two seasons as the hitting coach at Class-A Advanced High Desert. His managerial resume includes 3 seasons at shortseason Eugene (2003-05), 3 seasons with San Luis of the California Collegiate League (2007-10) and one season leading the field staff for the Road Warriors of the independent Atlantic League (2011). A former first-round selection by Texas in the 1972 draft, Howell logged time in the PCL as a player with Spokane (1974) and Portland (1985), as well as three seasons as a hitting coach with Portland (2000-02). Pitching coach Jaime Navarro, who is entering his 6th season with the Mariners organization, returns to the Rainiers after spending the last 3 seasons as the Mariners bullpen coach. Cory Snyder, who spent the last 3 seasons with Jackson, will serve as hitting coach. Tom Newberg and BJ Downie each return to Tacoma as part of the training staff, while Gabe Bourland will be the teams performance coach.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: For the 2nd straight week the California League Player of the Week Award was given to a Mavericks position player. INF Jordy Lara was named Player of the Week, April 21-27. Lara drove in a season-high 4 RBI with a 2-out grand slam home run on April 22 vs. Rancho Cucamonga (1x3, 2 R, HR, 4 RBI). It marked the 7th time in his career to drive in at least 4 runs in a game and first since Aug. 29, 2013 at Rancho Cucamonga (2x6, 2 R, HR, 4 RBI). It was also his 2nd career grand slam (last: 7/19/10 vs. DSL Cardinals, 2x3, 2 R, 2 HR, 5 RBI, HB). COACHING STAFF: The Mariners California League affiliate, the High Desert Mavericks, will be managed by Eddie Menchaca, who spent the previous 3 seasons with Clinton. He enters his 6th season in the Mariners organization, including 4 as manager. Menchaca has led his squad to the postseason in each of the last 4 seasons, accumulating a 238-243 (.495) record. Pitching coach Andrew Lorraine enters his 1st season with High Desert after spending the last 2 seasons with Clinton. Hitting coach Max Venable begins his 1st season as coach in the Mariners organization. Venable appeared parts of 12 seasons in the Major Leagues as an outfielder, including stints with the Giants (1979-83), the Expos (1984), the Reds (1985-87), and the Angels (1989-91). Overall he batted .241 (337x1397) with 176 runs scored, 57 doubles, 17 triples, 18 home runs and 128 RBI in 727 career games in the Major Leagues. His son, Will, is currently an outfielder with the San Diego Padres. Tyler Moos begins his 2nd season with Mavericks as trainer and first-year performance coach Cory Ritter round out the Mavericks staff.

The teams will play consecutive doubleheaders, both beginning at 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. OF NOTE: C Marcus Littlewood has hit safely in 11 of 14 games he has appeared, batting .364 (20x55) with 12 runs scored, 5 doubles, 2 home runs, 9 RBI, 6 walks and 1 stolen base. C Christian Carmichael hit safely in 6 of 7 games he has appeared, batting .375 (9x24) with 4 runs scored, 1 double, 1 home run, 2 RBI and 2 walks. RH Emilio Pagan has recorded 4 saves in 6 relief appearances this season, allowing only 1 earned run over 11.0 innings in relief (0.82 ERA). He has limited opponents to a .250 (11x44) average, while walking 1 and striking out 12. COACHING STAFF: Manager Scott Steinmann returns to lead the LumberKings after a four-year absence from the Midwest League. Steinmann was Clintons manager in 2009 and led them to a 69 -68 record. He was originally assigned to be the hitting coach with short-A Everett, but was promoted to Clinton after Chris Prieto was named the Mariners Quality Control Coach.
