This series of Latinamerrcat choral music will provide an oppoitunity for many choirs t6 get to know this musrc and, through it, to discover our traditions, our rh1'thms, and our soul. In this lullaby composcd by Atahualpa Yupanqui, one of the most popular Latinamerican composers of th 1960s and early 1970s, the littl black child is given impossible promises and warned of dire consequenccs, while the sad plisht of the sick, hard.workins mothcr is depictd in word and song. According to our translator "Nsrtro Carlos Inpez, literally mans 'little black one,'or, in modern usage, 'darling' 'dear simply or little one.' But other words in th txt leav no doubt about 'black' the setting of this lullaby. The 'r' omission of i.he in ,rae' (i'iaet), ce'do (cerdo), snd ca'ne (carne) and the '6' omission of an ia 'ro (e6ta) a d tre'ca (fresca) all reflect the black spanish pronunciation of the unaducated slave culture. The references to the brutal practice of cutting s person's foot otr to prevent scap and to the sick mothcr working hard in the 6elds and not Setting paid can only be understood in trms ofthe dehumanizing conditions slave8 endured for centuries in many part6 of the Ncw World-" Marb Guinand
