I am: Married Single Widowed Divorced Separated
Dear Friends in Christ,

Mothers Day is a day to honor the special womenmothers, grandmothers, aunts, friendswho have fed, nurtured,
loved and shaped us into the people we are today. It is through their unconditional love that we begin to understand the
depth of Christs love for us, and his command to share that love with one another.

Mothers Day is therefore an appropriate day to support a critical mission of the Church: the care of the poor and
vulnerable. By participating in the Catholic Charities Mothers Day Collection, each one of us has the opportunity to
share Christs love with those who are hungry, homeless, hurting and in need of help. We are greatly blessed in the
Archdiocese of Chicago to have an extraordinary social-service agency like Catholic Charities to help us fulfill Jesus
command to care for those in need.

As we share our resources with the poor and vulnerable, we not only allow God to bless others through us, but we are
blessed as well. The poor teach us the virtues of tolerance, meekness and patience. God comes to us cloaked in poverty.
It is through our connection to the poor that we encounter the suffering Christ and so humble ourselves and truly open
our hearts to his tremendous grace and mercy.

I thank you for your past support, and I invite you to again join me in making a contribution to the Catholic Charities
Mothers Day Collection on May 11, 2014. Your gift will help serve more than one million people of all ages, races and
religions in Cook and Lake Counties, including one out of every three citizens of the City of Chicago.

May God bless you and your families. You and those you love are in my prayers; please keep me in yours.

Respect Life
Pope Saint John Paul II declared the Sunday after Easter to be
Divine Mercy Sunday. Many of the faithful pray the Chaplet of Divine
Mercy regularly. There is a link between this devotion and the pro-life
movement. Fr. Seraphim Michalenko, MIC, who was a principal
translator of St. Faustina's diary, and the postulator of her cause of
canonization, writes the following: "On at least three occasions, from 8:00
-11:00 in the evening, she felt like her insides were being torn apart. She
suffered so much that she thought she was going to die. The doctors
couldn't figure out what was ailing her, and no medication was able to
alleviate her sufferings. Later, she was given to understand that she was
undergoing those pains for mothers who were aborting their children
(Diary, 1276).

Teacher Prayer, by Joanna Fuchs
Dear Lord, bless these teachers mightily as they seek
to teach, enrich and guide Your precious
children. Grant them abundant resources to do their
job, intelligence, wisdom, sensitivity, kindness, and
the material things that make it possible to turn some
of these tender green plants into the strong, stable
trees that will lead our nation, to transform some of
these buds into brilliant flowers that will bring light,
color and happiness to all who encounter them, and to
give every one of them the tools to be creative, and
productive and to develop their own kind of success
in the world. Lord, wrap Your loving arms around
these teachers who give so much of themselves to
grow our youth into creative, responsible adults. We
pray that You will immerse them in your boundless,
transcendent love. We pray that You will strengthen
and soothe them when they have given so much of
themselves that they need Your extra attention, Your
extra care. We love, respect and admire these
teachers, Lord and we pray that you will watch over
them always -- these special people who hold our
children and our future in their hands. Amen.
Tuesday, May 6, is National Teacher Day. Please be
