Circuit Breaker
GL 308/309
2
The improved GL 308/309
circuit breakers are based on our
experience with more than
20,000 self-blast circuit breakers
in use throughout the world, in
combination with ALSTOM spring
mechanisms.
ALSTOMs SF
6
self-blast circuit
breakers for rated voltages of 52kV
and 72.5kV have been in service
throughout the world since the late
1980s and have proven their high
level of reliability day after day.
Even under extreme conditions like
those in earthquake-prone zones or
tropical regions, our customers can
count on ALSTOM circuit breakers.
The experience that has been
acquired with the well-known S1
types has been systematically and
effectively utilized to create the
improved design of types GL 308
and GL 309. As a consequence, both
the GL 308 and the GL 309 satisfy
demands for high reliability and
guarantee optimum substation
availability. Both types are based on
the new FK3-1 spring mechanism.
Design and Operation
Third-generation interrupter
chamber with field-proven
interrupter assembly with un-
changed quenching geometry
for guaranteed operating reliability
Pressure relief system with arrest-
ing bolts for passive protection of
both substation and personnel
Field-proven temperature-
compensated density monitor with
two-stage transducer and three-
color dial
Easy access to the SF

Circuit Breaker with New Technology
3
Improved breaker technologies
demand new mechanism designs.
The newly developed series of
Type FK3-x spring mechanisms
forms the basis for all ALSTOM
circuit breakers.
The introduction of energy-optimized
breaking chambers has lowered the
mechanisms opening energy
requirements.
The newly developed FK3-x, with its
optimally adjusted spring forces,
offers the best characteristics for GL
circuit breakers, in particular.
Experience accumulated with over
20,000 ALSTOM spring mechanisms
has been incorporated in this new
mechanism type.
Design and Operation
Spring mechanism with helical
compression springs for closing
operations (most reliable spring
energy storage system)
Simple breaker adjustment due to
evenly distributed forces (factory-
set)
Local mechanical control through
lockable rotary handles
Easy-to-read mechanical
indication of spring charging and
operating state
Low-impact closing and opening
motion
Low-maintenance design
(maintenance-free for up to
10,000 cycles or 20 years)
Very high availability with an even
longer service life
Low noise emissions
Standardized terminal strip for
easy add-on of optional
accessories such as
remote/local control switch
closing/opening pushbutton
switch
thermostatically controlled
auxiliary heating system
receptacle outlet, etc.
Independent cable entry plate
