PHIL BROWN YEAR BY YEAR
Phil Brown leads the highly successful Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) Womens Basketball program as head coach. Brown is recognised as one of the
worlds best coaches in womens basketball, having coached Olympians including former AIS athletes and WNBA All-Stars Lauren Jackson and Penny
Taylor. Phil has the honour of being a two-time Australian Womens National Basketball League (WNBL) coach of the year.
Brown, led the AIS Womens Basketball team to victory in the 1999 WNBL competition and was awarded WNBL life membership in 2003. After 15 years
at the helm of the AIS Womens Basketball program, Brown served as a 1st Assistant Coach at the University of Oregon Womens Basketball team from
2005-2009. With four years of coaching experience in the United States, he returned to the AIS with a wealth of experience and innovation to build on
the already strong achievements of the AIS Womens Basketball program.

making skills offensively. Bec has great competitiveness and intensity and an ability to make things happen on the court. Bec was a member of the U/19
Gems World Championship team in 2011. The AIS Womens team will be looking for offensive consistency and leadership from Bec throughout 2011/12.

COACHS COMMENTS: Despite an injury plagued 2010 Tessa was able to make considerable progress on her game over the past 12
months. Her understanding of point guard play has improved significantly and the improvement in her dribbling and passing skills has
greatly assisted this development. Tessa will continue to focus on her shooting range and consistency, leadership abilities and her ability to create the play.
Tessa is a fine athlete and has developed her strength and speed further which will assist her durability and defensive capabilities to pressure the ball up the
floor and defend the bigger stronger guards in the WNBL. Tessa was member of the U/17 National team in 2011 and a U/19 Gems squad member in 2011.

COACHS COMMENTS: Rebecca made a great start to her AIS scholarship in 2011 and has been focused on developing her perimeter game to a senior
international standard. She is a long and athletic player who demonstrates strong oensive and defensive potential on the perimeter and in the post. Rebecca
will be undergoing a shoulder reconstruction in August 2011 and will be focusing on her rehabilitation and strength development for the rest of 2011. Rebecca
will return to training and competition in early 2012. Rebecca was a member of the U/19 Gems in 2011.

formed for early identification of athletes available for the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship team. Also in 2010 she won a silver

COACHS COMMENTS: Mikhaela will be building on a strong start to her AIS scholarship in 2010/11. She will continue to focus on taking
her strong point guard skills and play-making capabilities to an international standard. She is a strong and athletic guard who demonstrates a natural ability to
control the tempo of the game, create for others, and score when needed. Mikhaela will continue to develop her physical strength, speed, and endurance as well
as developing her leadership skills, pull-up jump shot, and 3 point shooting ability throughout 2011/12. Mikhaela was an U/19 Gems squad member in 2011 and is
eligible for the U/19 World Championship team in 2013.

COACHS COMMENTS: Olivia has made great strides in her development due to her hard work and commitment over the past 18
months. An athletic player, Livy will continue to develop her dribbling, passing skills and shooting range. Her size and jumping ability assisted her rebounding
prociency where Livy made signicant progress through the WNBL in 2010/11. Livy continues to improve her defensive skills on the perimeter in addition to
her 1 on 1 ability to create the play oensively. Livy has greatly improved her assertiveness and this continual improvement will be pivotal for her in 2011/12.
Livy was also a member of the U/17 National Team in 2010 and U/19 Gems squad member in 2011.

COACHS COMMENTS: Maddie made significant progress over 2010 and established herself as one of the teams leading backcourt players through the 2010/11
WNBL season. Although Maddie is a good mid range jump shooter it was her defensive consistency and on court intensity and hustle that resulted in a solid first
year for her in the League. Maddie will continue to focus on her passing skills and ability to create off the dribble. In addition she will maintain her daily work on
developing her 3 point shot and her understanding of the game and tempo control. Maddie will continue to bring energy and leadership to the AIS in 2011/12 and
will be a strong leader, particularly for the younger players on the team. Maddie was a member of the U/19 Gems World Championship team in 2011.

COACHS COMMENTS: Casey has had a solid start to her AIS scholarship in 2011. She is focusing on transitioning to her natural
position on the perimeter and developing those skills to an international standard. She is a long and athletic player who
demonstrates a natural ability to score and rebound. In 2011-12 Casey will be looking to develop her physical strength and
endurance. From a technical standpoint, Casey will be focusing on developing her footwork, 1-on-1 offensive and defensive perimeter skills, and 3 point
shooting ability. Casey helped secure Australia a gold medal at the Oceania Youth Tournament in New Caledonia in 2010. Casey is eligible for the U/19 World

COACHS COMMENTS: Alex has made some solid progress on her individual fundamentals offensively and defensively. In her second year on AIS Scholarship
Alex will continue to develop her low post scoring mentality and skills and continue to improve her perimeter shooting range and passing skills. Alex brings a
physical presence to the team and strong rebounding capabilities offensively and defensively. Alex was member of the U/17 National Team in 2010 and U/19
Gems in 2011. The AIS team will be looking to Alex for leadership in the post position in 2011/12.

COACHS COMMENTS: Unfortunately Carleys development over the past year was hampered by two knee surgeries that resulted in her missing 6 months
including the entire WNBL season. Carley enters her second year on Scholarship and will continue to develop her strength and fitness levels in addition to her
defensive skills on and off the ball. Carley has a great feel for the game, a wonderful scoring mentality and brings unique offensive qualities to the team.
Carley can score inside and outside and can finish around the basket in a number of different ways. Her court vision and understanding of the game
offensively is outstanding for a young player. Carley will need to work hard on improving her lateral quickness defensively and her ability to defend stronger
or quicker players. Carley was a member of the National U/17 in 2010 and a member of the U/19 Gems World Championship team in 2011. Carley is eligible for
the U/19 World Championship team again in 2013.
