It was an early August
night. Even with the fans
on the heat was stifling
as I tried to sleep. I
awoke early, wiped the
sweat from my forehead,
and took my dogs out
for their morning walk.
The lone Maple tree in
my backyard kept a
quiet watch on the rising
sun. As I walked over to
it I was surprised to see
the first red leaf of the
year glowing in the grass
below it.
I gently picked up the
red leaf and smiled. In
the midst of the
Summers heat and
humidity it signaled the
coming Fall. It was lead-
ing the way to a glorious
change that would soon
take place. I could feel
the cooler breezes blow-
ing on my face. I could
see the trees covered
with thousands of red,
yellow, burgundy, and
orange leaves shimmer-
ing in the sunlight. I
could see the forests and
mountains here painted
by Heavens own hand. I
could feel the joy of a
beautiful Autumn awak-
ening in my soul.

Of all the stories I have
told I have never talked
about my dentures. So
many people were
involved in story I have
had them ask me why I
have never told it
before. Well here it is
people.
I lost my dentures once
and my daughter will
not let me forget it. I
first went in the hospital
in 1999. I had problems
with my legs. While
there I had an upper GI
and lower GI. Every
year after that I had to
have an upper GI.
My daughter, Phyllis,
always took me to The
Surgery Center. They
took me back in the
room to prepare me.
Once I was ready I
walked to the room
where they were going
to do the upper GI.
After I got on the table I
realized my upper den-
tures were still in my
mouth. I told them and
they brought me a den-
ture cup and I put them
in it.
I last thing I saw as I as
going to sleep were my
teeth sitting on a table. I
wondered if the nurses
would remember they
were there. Dermal is
some good stuff. It will
put you out. At least it
does me. I finally woke
up after sleeping about
four hours. I say I woke
up. They had to wake
me up and then they
had to dress me and
then Phyllis came and
got me and took me
home. I dont remember
much about the drive
home.
The minute I got home
I went back to sleep and
slept though the day. I
finally woke up about
seven or eight oclock. I
went to the bathroom
and changed clothes
and went back to sleep
some more. All of sud-
den I remembered my
dentures. I told Phyllis
to check the bag they
gave me and see if they
were in there. Notttt. I
panicked. I had to have
my teeth by Sunday or I
could not go to church.
We looked everywhere.
They were no where to
be found. Phyllis got on
the phone with her
friend that worked at
the clinic. She started
looking for them. No
luck. Everybody there
was looking for them.

The little old couple
walked slowly into
McDonald's that cold
winter evening. They
looked out of place amid
the young families and
young couples eating
there that night. Some of
the customers looked
admiringly at them.
You could tell what the
admirers were thinking:
"Look, there is a couple
who has been through a
lot together, probably for
60 years or more!"
The little old man
walked right up to the
cash register, placed his
order with no hesitation
and then paid for their
meal. The couple took a
table near the back wall
and started taking food
off of the tray. There was
one hamburger, one order
of french fries and one
drink.
The little old man
unwrapped the plain
hamburger and carefully
cut it in half. He placed
one half in front of his
wife. Then he carefully
counted out the french
fries, divided them in
two piles and neatly
placed one pile in front
of his wife. He took a sip
of the drink, his wife
took a sip and then set
the cup down between
them.
As the man began to eat
his few bites of hamburger,
the crowd began to get
restless. Again you could
tell what they were think-
ing: "That poor old couple.
All they can afford is one
meal for the two of them."
As the man began to eat
his french fries one young
man stood and came over
to the old couple's table.
He politely offered to buy
another meal for the old
couple to eat. The old man
replied that they were just
fine. They were used to
sharing everything.
Then the crowd noticed
that the little old lady had-
n't eaten a bite. She just sat
there watching her hus-
band eat and occasionally
taking turns sipping the
drink. Again the young
man came over and
begged them to let him
buy them something to eat.
The man again explained
that no, they were used to
sharing everything togeth-
er.
As the little old man fin-
ished eating and was wip-
ing his face neatly with a
napkin, the young man
could stand it no longer.
Again he came over to
their table and offered to
buy some food. After
being politely refused
again, he finally asked a
question of the little old
lady: "Ma'am, why aren't
you eating? You said that
you share everything.
What is it that you are
waiting for?"
She answered ... "The
teeth."

It got late so they went
home. They are usual-
ly off on Saturday but
all the nurses went
back in and went
through all the linen,
all the trash, the trash
bin outside. They did-
nt leave a stone
unturned. Finally
Phylliss friend called
to give us the bad
news. No dentures
were in that building. I
panicked again. What
in the world was I
going to do?
Phyllis told me to go
through all the things
that I had in my bag. I
did but no dentures. I
am on the edge of cry-
ing. I went in the bath-
room and for some
reason I picked up my
denture cup.
Something rattled
inside. I opened it and
there were my den-
tures. How in the
world did they get in
there? I took it to
Phyllis and showed it
to her. She said the
same thing. I said I
dont have a clue. I
thought maybe you did
it and forgot about it.
Phyllis said why
would I put them in
there? When I left the
clinic they were in a
blue denture box.
When I found them,
they were in my pink
box. Only one thing
could have happened.
In my sleepy state I
had came home, got
my dentures out of the
blue box and put them
back where they
belonged.
Now we had to break
the news to the kind
people at the clinic
that I had found them.
I told Phyllis to call
them and thank them
and let them know we
found them She told
me that she was not
going to call them that
I was, because I was
the one that caused all
the trouble. I did the
deed and was very
embarrassed. The
strange thing was we
never found the blue
box. Go figure.
