close to 140 years.
And for me, its my
daily motivation.

We have our eyes set on the future
of mobility and can look back on an
eventful past. Heres our history in
fast-forward:
In 1871, Continental-Caoutchouc-
und Gutta-Percha Compagnie is
founded in Hanover as a joint stock
company. Manufacturing at the main
factory includes soft rubber products,
rubberized fabrics, and solid tires for
carriages and bicycles. The foundation
for success was laid in Germany, but
it crossed borders even back then:
Louis Blriot, the French aviation pi-
oneer, writes history in 1909 with the
frst fight across the English Channel.
Continental Aeroplan material covers
the fuselage and wings of his plane.
The success story continues. Innova-
tion and expansion are the engines of
progress. In 1955, air spring bellows
are developed for buses and trucks.
Mergers with major companies in the
German rubber sector and various
acquisitions in the following decades
strengthen the companys market
position. The formation of the Auto-
motive Systems division in 1995 pro-
vides an entry into the automotive
industrys systems business. In 1997,
Continental unveils ISAD, the key
technology for hybrid systems and is
awarded industrys most prestigious
innovation prize in Germany.
In another milestone, the automotive
brake and chassis unit is successful-
ly integrated into the division a year
later. Expertise is improved and busi-
ness units are expanded: through
the acquisition of Phoenix in 2004,
ContiTech becomes the worlds larg-
est specialist for rubber and plastics
technology outside the tire industry.
In 2007, Continental acquires Sie-
mens VDO Automotive AG, becoming
one of the worlds leading automotive
suppliers.
