in $26 billion deal
American’s best-known investor,
Warren E. Buffett, is making his big-
gest bet yet on the nation’s econom-
ic future — by buying a railroad.
After capitalizing on the financial
crisis with a series of bold deals,
Buffett on Tuesday agreed to buy
the Burlington Northern Santa Fe
Corp. Here’s his wager: as the econ-
omy revives, so will the demand for
goods to be shipped by rail.
In Burlington Northern, based in
Fort Worth, Tex., and the product of
a 1994 union of two competing rail-
roads, Buffett will gain a company
whose tracks bear coal and timber
from the West; grain from the heart-
land; and imported goods ferried to
California, Mexico and Canada. And
in the rails, Buffett says he will have
a more efficient and greener alter-
native to trucking — and a business
whose cash flows are steady.
“This is all happening because
my father didn’t buy me a train set
as a kid,” Buffett joked.
His new toy will not come cheap,
however. Berkshire Hathaway, the
conglomerate he runs, will spend
roughly $26 billion for the 77.4 per-
cent of the railroad that it does not
already own, paying $100 a share in
cash and stock. As part of the bid,
he is splitting Berkshire’s class B
shares 50-to-1 to give to some Bur-
lington Northern shareholders,
breaking his rule of never splitting
Berkshire’s stock.
“I stretched on this one,” he said
in an interview. “I went to the last
nickel.”

Republicans swept contests for
governor in New Jersey and Vir-
ginia on Tuesday, dealing Presi-
dent Obama a setback and build-
ing momentum for a comeback
attempt in next year’s midterm
Congressional elections.
In New Jersey, a former federal
prosecutor, Christopher J. Chris-
tie, became the first Republican
to win statewide in 12 years by
vowing to attack the state’s fiscal
problems with the same aggres-
siveness he used to lock up cor-
rupt politicians.
He overcame a huge Demo-
cratic voter advantage and a re-
lentless barrage of negative com-
mercials to defeat Jon S. Corzine,
an unpopular incumbent who
outspent him by more than 2-to-1
and drew heavily on political help
from the White House, includ-
ing three visits to the state from
Obama.
“Hey, New Jersey, we did it,”
Christie said after pumping his
fist and taking the stage to the
sounds of Bruce Springsteen’s
“Born to Run.”
Corzine, after conceding, said:
“It has been quite a journey.
There’s a bright future ahead for
New Jersey if we stay focused on
people’s lives, and I’m telling you,
I’m going to do that for the rest of
my life.”

BAGHDAD — Despite ma-
jor bombings and fears of rising
violence as U.S. troops withdraw,
Iraq’s security forces have been
relying on a device to detect
bombs and weapons that the U.S.
military and technical experts
say is useless.
The hand-held wand, with a
telescopic antenna on a swivel, is
being used at hundreds of check-
points in Iraq. But the device
works “on the same principle as
a Ouija board” — the power of
suggestion — said a retired U.S.
Air Force officer, Lt. Col. Hal Bid-
lack, who describes the wand as
nothing more than an explosives
divining rod.
Still, the Iraqi government has
purchased more than 1,500 of the

In Virginia, where Obama was
the first Democratic presidential
nominee to carry the state since
1964, Robert F. McDonnell, a Re-
publican former state attorney
general, rolled to victory over
R. Creigh Deeds, a veteran state
senator. His victory, along with
Republican victories in the races
for attorney general and lieuten-
ant governor, ended eight years
of Democratic control in Rich-
mond.
Still unclear was the result in
New York’s 23rd Congressional
District, where Douglas L. Hoff-
man, a little known accountant,
attracted the backing of national
conservative leaders and drove
a moderate Republican from the
race, but faced an 11th-hour effort
by the White House to boost his
Democratic rival, Bill Owens.
In Virginia, McDonnell avoided
divisive social issues, concentrat-
ing instead on his plans to create
jobs, improve the economy and
fix the state’s transportation
problems.
In New Jersey, Christie held
Corzine, a onetime Goldman
Sachs C.E.O., accountable for ris-
ing unemployment, persistent
budget deficits, and his failure
to gain control over skyrocket-
ing property taxes, the nation’s
devices, known as the ADE 651, at
a cost of $16,500 to $60,000 each.
Nearly every police checkpoint,
and many Iraqi military check-
points, have one of the devices,
which are now normally used in
place of physical inspections of
vehicles.
Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-
Maliki has taken down blast walls
along dozens of streets, but the
recent bombings of government
buildings here have underscored
how precarious Iraq remains.
The suicide bombers who man-
aged to get two tons of explosives
into downtown Baghdad on Oct.
25, killing 155 people and destroy-
ing three ministries, had to pass
at least one checkpoint where the
ADE 651 is typically deployed,
highest. Voters embraced Chris-
tie though he offered little detail
about how he would fix the state’s
chronic financial problems.
Voters in both states remained
strongly supportive of Obama,
exit polls conducted by Edison
Research showed, though they
said that was not a factor in their
decisions. But independent vot-
ers, who in New Jersey favored
the president in 2008 and in Vir-
ginia split between Obama and
John McCain, delivered strong
margins for both Christie and Mc-
Donnell, the surveys showed.
In New Jersey, a sprawling cor-
ruption case begun by Christie
that culiminated in July with the
arrests of dozens of politicians
and others, appeared to have tak-
en its toll on the Democrats’ get-
out-the-vote machinery. In Hud-
son County, a party bastion where
a number of Democratic officials
were charged, only 39 percent of
registered voters cast their bal-
lots, county officials said.
The victor in Virginia, McDon-
nell, 55, is a conservative, but ran
on a more moderate platform that
appealed to voters in suburbs
like Fairfax County. By contrast,
Deeds, 51, had a difficult time
introducing himself to densely
populated Northern Virginia.

European Treaty Claude Lévi-Strauss, Anthropologist, Dies

Clears Roadblock
PRAGUE — A landmark agree-
ment aimed at giving the Europe-
an Union a global stature on par
with major powers like the United
States and China cleared its last
major hurdle on Tuesday.
The president of the Czech Re-
public, Vaclav Klaus, signed the
document hours after the coun-
try’s Constitutional Court ruled
that it was compatible with the
country’s Constitution.
Klaus was the last European
Union leader to approve the Lis-
bon Treaty, which will attempt to
increase Europe’s clout on foreign
policy issues and will streamline
the union’s decision-making. The
treaty required ratification by all
27 member states.
“It’s now absolutely clear that
the Lisbon Treaty will enter into
force soon,” José Manuel Barroso,
president of the European Com-
mission, said in Brussels after the
signing. Officials expect the docu-
ment to become effective Dec. 1 af-
ter the Czech prime minister, who
supports the treaty, signs it.
The treaty aims to give the Euro-
pean Union a bigger role interna-
tionally by creating a permanent
presidential post and setting up a
more powerful foreign policy chief
supported by a network of diplo-
mats around the world. It will put
in place a new voting system that
reflects countries’ population size,
while reducing the opportunities
for individual countries to block a
proposal. It also gives more power
to the directly elected European
Parliament.

Claude Lévi-Strauss, the French
anthropologist whose revolution-
ary studies of what was once
called “primitive man” trans-
formed Western understanding of
the nature of culture, custom and
civilization, has died at 100.
His son Laurent said Lévi-
Strauss died Friday at his home in
Paris. His death was announced
Tuesday, the same day he was
buried in Lignerolles, in the Côte-
d’Or region southeast of Paris,
where he had a country home.
In studying the mythologies
of primitive tribes, Lévi-Strauss
transformed the way the 20th cen-
tury came to understand civiliza-
tion itself. Tribal mythologies, he
argued, display remarkably subtle
systems of logic, showing rational
mental qualities as sophisticated
as those of Western societies.
He focused on the common
aspects of humanity’s attempts
to understand the world, becom-
ing the premiere representative
of “structuralism,” a school of
thought in which universal “struc-
tures” were believed to underlie
all human activity.
His work was a profound influ-
ence even on his critics, of whom
there were many. And his writing
— a mixture of the pedantic and
the poetic, full of daring juxtapo-
sitions, intricate argument and
elaborate metaphors — resem-
bles little that had come before in

“People realize he is one of the
great intellectual heroes of the
20th century,” Philippe Descola,
the chairman of the anthropol-
ogy department at the Collège de
France, said last November on the
centenary of Levi-Strauss’s birth.
A descendant of a French-Jew-
ish artistic family, he was a quint-
essential French intellectual, as
comfortable in the public sphere
as in the academy. He taught at
universities in Paris, New York
and São Paulo, Brazil, and also
worked for the United Nations
and the French government.
“Mythologiques,” his four-vol-
ume work about the structure of
native mythology in the Ameri-
cas, attempts nothing less than an
interpretation of the world of cul-
ture and custom, shaped by anal-
ysis of several hundred myths of
little-known tribes and traditions.
The volumes — “The Raw and the
Cooked,” “From Honey to Ashes,”
“The Origin of Table Manners”
and “The Naked Man,” published

from 1964 to 1971 — challenge the
reader with their complex inter-
weaving of theme and detail.
In his analysis of myth and cul-
ture, Lévi-Strauss might contrast
imagery of monkeys and jaguars;
consider the differences in mean-
ing of roasted and boiled food
(cannibals, he suggested, tended
to boil their friends and roast their
enemies); and establish connec-
tions between mythological tales
and ornate laws of marriage and
kinship.
His interpretations of myths
were pivotal in changing Western
thinking about primitive societies.
He began challenging the conven-
tional wisdom about them shortly
after beginning his research in the
1930s. The accepted view held that
primitive societies were intellec-
tually irrational, basing their ap-
proaches to life and religion on the
satisfaction of urgent needs for
food, clothing and shelter. Lévi-
Strauss rescued his subjects from
this limited perspective.

Equatorial Guinea said Tuesday that it
had pardoned Simon Mann, a former Brit-
ish special forces officer jailed last year
for plotting to overthrow the country’s

southern Iraq, which contains about 17.8 bil-

Gunmen ambushed a government motor-
cade in Yemen’s eastern province of Hadh-
ramaut on Tuesday, killing three top pro-
vincial officials and three guards in an at-
tack that had all the hallmarks of Al Qae-

deadliest attack on government officials in

New York City voters, angry over
his maneuver to undo the city’s
term limits law and his extrava-

ed an unexpected lift to his vastly

With 98 percent of the vote
counted, unofficial returns showed
Bloomberg with 51 percent and
Thompson with 46 percent.
The closeness seemed to startle
Bloomberg’s aides and the city’s
political establishment, which had
predicted a blowout. Published
polls in the days leading up to the
election suggested that the mayor
would win by as much as 18 per-
centage points; he had cruised to
re-election with a 20 percent mar-
gin four years ago. The billionaire
mayor had poured $90 million of
his own fortune into the race, a
sum without equal in the history
of municipal politics. It gave him
a 14-to-1 advantage in campaign
Questions Raised About Dog-Scent Crime Lineups
HOUSTON — A dog’s sniff
helped put Curvis Bickham in
jail for eight months. Now that
the case against him has been
dropped, he wants the world to
know that the investigative tech-
nique that justified his arrest
smells to high heaven.
The police told Bickham they
had tied him to a triple homi-
cide through a dog-scent lineup.
Dogs are exposed to the scent
from items found at the scene of
a crime, and are then walked by a
series of containers with samples
swabbed from a suspect and from
others not involved in the crime. If
the dog finds a can with a match-
ing scent, it signals its handler.
More Bodies Are Found at Home of Rapist in Cleveland
More remains were discovered
Tuesday at the Cleveland home of
a convicted rapist, raising to 10 the
number of bodies that have been
found there, the authorities said.
Four more bodies and a skull
were found at the home, where
the remains of six women were
removed last week, said the police
chief, Michael McGrath. Anthony
Sowell, 50, who lives in the home,
is in jail and was charged Tuesday
with five counts of aggravated
spending.
But the turnout appeared to
be on track to be among the low-
est in modern New York history.
The mayor’s vaunted campaign
machinery failed to deliver the
surge of supporters his aides had
boasted about.
Bloomberg had based his third-
term campaign largely on the
argument that the city has been
better run since he ushered in an
era of corporate efficiency and
nonpartisan leadership at City
Hall. He also pointed to his accom-
plishments in education, crime
reduction and public health.
But voters from Park Slope in
Brooklyn to Morrisania in the
Bronx seemed torn.
While they praised his com-
petence and intelligence, many
were put off by what they saw as
Bloomberg’s heavyhanded move
to rewrite the law that would have
limited him to two consecutive
terms, saying it was obviously
self-serving. The mayor had pre-
viously opposed any undoing of
A 2004 report by the F.B.I.
states that use of scent dogs “has
become a proven tool that can es-
tablish a connection to the crime.”
Critics say that the possibilities of
cross-contamination of scent are
great, and that the procedures are
rarely well controlled. Nonethe-
less, the technique has been used
in many states, including Alaska,
Florida, New York and Texas, said
Lawrence J. Myers, an associate
professor of animal behavior at
the Auburn University College of
Veterinary Medicine.
The methods of the dog handler
in Bickham’s case, and in a half-
dozen others that are the basis of
lawsuits, have come under fierce
murder.
“It appears that this man had an
insatiable appetite that he had to
fill,” McGrath said.
He said the additional bodies
were found buried in the back-
yard. The skull was found in a
bucket in the basement.
The authorities do not know
whether the skull belongs to an
11th victim, said a police spokes-
man, Lt. Thomas Stacho.

Premature Births
Raise Infant Mortality
High rates of premature
birth are the main reason the
United States has higher infant
mortality than do many other
rich countries, government re-
searchers reported. In Swe-
den, for instance, 6.3 percent of
births were premature, com-
pared with 12.4 percent in the
United States in 2005. For every
1,000 births in the United States,
6.9 infants died before they
turned 1, compared with 2.4 in
Sweden; 29 other countries also

The Philadelphia transit sys-
tem’s largest union went on
strike early Tuesday, crippling
travel in the city. The action
was in defiance of Gov. Edward
G. Rendell, who had ordered the
union and the transit author-

are paid an average of $52,000 a
year, excluding benefits. They
are seeking annual raises of 4
percent and to keep their health
care contributions at 1 percent
of pay. Transit officials had of-
fered raises totaling 11.5 per-

courtship of about 20 years, the
Walt Disney Co. has won approv-
al from the central government of
China to build a Disneyland-style
theme park in Shanghai, Robert
A. Iger, Disney’s chief executive,
said Tuesday.
The agreement for a Shang-
hai Disneyland is a landmark
deal that carries enormous cul-
tural and financial implications.
Analysts estimate the initial
park — not including hotels and
resort infrastructure — will cost
$3.5 billion, making it one of the
largest-ever foreign investments

DETROIT — The new board of
General Motors reversed course
on Tuesday on the planned sale of
its Opel division in Europe and de-
cided that G.M. would retain and
reorganize the business itself.
The decision was a blow to the
Canadian auto supplier Magna,
which was poised to acquire a
55 percent stake in Opel with the
backing of the German govern-
ment and labor unions.
G.M. put Opel up for sale in the
spring as it headed toward bank-
ruptcy in the United States, and
100 of those acres. It would be a
little bigger than Disneyland in
Anaheim, Calif., and on par with
the parks in Paris and Tokyo. It
is expected to open in five or six
years.

Plea From Madoff Accountant May Lead to Tax Cases NovaGld g

nard L. Madoff’s longtime accoun-
tant indicates that the criminal
investigation of the Madoff fraud
may be heading in a new direction
— away from securities fraud and
toward criminal tax cases.
The accountant, David G. Frie-
hling, admitted in federal court
that he had produced the rubber-
stamp audits that allowed Madoff
to conceal his enormous Ponzi
scheme from regulators for nearly
20 years.
Friehling also pleaded guilty
to three counts of obstructing the
administration of the federal tax
laws — charges added within the

troduce its five-year plan for re-
vival on Wednesday, including a
streamlined product lineup that it
hopes will win back buyers.
Its job is getting tougher by the
month. Chrysler said on Tuesday
that its new-vehicle sales in the
United States fell 30 percent in
October, a month when total sales
were flat for the industry and for
its two crosstown rivals, General
Motors and the Ford Motor Co.
G.M., which came out of

eral legal specialists that the gov-
ernment had recently learned that
Friehling’s cooperation could help
it build criminal tax cases against
others in the Madoff drama, per-
haps Madoff family members.
“It may have just come up dur-
ing the debriefings that a prosecu-
tor would normally do before a
guilty plea,” said Kirby D. Behre, a
former prosecutor and a lawyer at
Paul Hastings. “But it really tells
me that they’re teeing him up to
be a witness against those whose
taxes he prepared.”

tential prison term of 114 years. In
essence, he admitted that he had
never adequately audited the Ma-
doff operation and, as an investor
in the scheme, had never been a
truly independent auditor. Never-
theless, he produced the suppos-
edly professional and independent
audits that sustained the Madoff
fraud year in and year out.(NYT)

Bonding with a new one means as-
suming a new identity, if only for a
week or two. That’s why, even in
the age of ever-expanding recipe
databases, cookbooks are still al-
luring. Here are some of this sea-
son’s most interesting titles.
First priority for curious cooks:
the new English translation of
LAROUSSE GASTRONOMIQUE, the
French culinary encyclopedia pub-
lished in 1938. Fortunately, all the
traditional, spectacularly impracti-
cal recipes — for things like pâté of
woodcock — have been preserved.
Edited by French chefs, anthropol-
ogists and historians, the book is
predictably biased toward Western
Europe. Daniel Boulud and Ferran
Adrià made the new edition, but so
did four living American chefs, the
first to be included: Charlie Trotter,

of what happens when they go to
New York instead. Twists on tra-
dition like the brilliantly greasy
Pimento-Cheese Potato Gratin
might get them drummed out of
Charleston, where they grew up,
but they’ll be most welcome else-

for people’s pleasure is obviously
a nice thing to do, but the number
one reason we eat is to nourish our-
selves and take care of ourselves.”
But he is keenly aware of the
challenges. On a visit to a school
that prides itself on its healthy
lunches, he watched ruefully as
students plucked the vegetables off
their pizzas. “It’s got to taste good,
you know?” he said. “They’re
not going to eat it, no matter how
healthy it is, if it doesn’t taste

From Vienna,
Wines of Honesty
As a child in Vienna, Carlo Hu-
ber would sometimes accompany
his father, Rupert E. Huber, to
wine bars and heurigen, informal
buffets where Viennese estates
sold their wines. When his father
had an especially pleasing glass,
Huber recalled, he would exclaim,
“Das ist ein ehrlicher wein!” —
That is an honest wine.
Huber never forgot the senti-
ment, and as he grew up he came
to enjoy those graceful Viennese
wines himself. When his work in
marketing took him to New York
in 1993, he was disappointed to
see that wines from Vienna were
virtually unknown here. So he and
another Viennese ex-pat, Paul
Darcy, created an import compa-
ny, Darcy and Huber Selections.
Most Viennese wine was origi-
nally destined for Vienna itself,
and most, Huber and Darcy say,
was not very good. But a new gen-
eration of winemakers is making
wines that can represent Vienna
on the world stage. Of particular
interest to them were gemischter
satz wines from a mixed array of
white grapes, not blended as in
Bordeaux, but made of grapes that
are planted and vinified together.
Such blends can create wines of
unusual complexity.
Darcy and Huber are importing
small quantities of exquisite Vien-
nese wines. Rainer Christ makes
two gemischter satz variations.
One is fresh, light and floral, with
a peppery component that lets
you know grüner veltliner is part
of the blend. The second is alto-
gether riper and richer.
Jutta Ambrositsch makes a dry,
earthy gemischter satz from al-
most 20 different grapes. Richard
Zahel’s Nussberg gemischter satz
is rich and almost oily in texture,
yet still with light flowery aromas.
My favorite, though, is the 2007
Weissleiten from Stefan Hajszan,
a gorgeous wine that is both deli-
cate and intense.
The gemischter satz wines I
have tasted can run from $15 or
$20 a bottle up to $40 or so. They
aren’t cheap, but they are indeed

Some Sense on Defense Spending
Presidents, and those aspiring to be presi-
dents, routinely promise to reform the defense
procurement process. And defense contrac-
tors, their lobbyists and the military services
routinely ensure that it never happens. This
year has been different. President Obama and
Defense Secretary Robert Gates have made a
compelling case for ending weapons programs
that significantly exceed their budgets or use
limited tax dollars to buy more capability than
the nation needs. And Congress has agreed,
somewhat.
The $680 billion defense authorization bill
signed into law by Obama last week pares
back or cancels billions of dollars in expensive
weapons systems that are either anachronis-
tic, redundant, poorly performing or exceed
the military’s real requirements. Even with
these reductions, the defense bill is one of the
biggest in history, in part because of the wars
in Iraq and Afghanistan. But it sets an impor-
tant base line for future cuts.
The new law ends production of the C-17
transport plane and cancels the airborne laser
as well as the heart of the Army’s Future Com-
bat System.
The biggest political win was ending produc-
tion of the Air Force’s F-22 stealth fighter jet af-
ter 187 aircraft. Previous presidents, including
President Bush, tried and failed to end the pro-
gram. The decision by Lockheed Martin and
its partners to put plants in dozens of states
ensured that it had a lot of powerful friends on
Capitol Hill.
This time, strategic reality finally trumped

Another day, another test of Congress’s will
to reform the financial system. The Investor
Protection Act of 2009, which faces final votes
on Wednesday in the House Financial Services
Committee, would make much-needed chang-
es to protect individual investors from fraud
and manipulation.
It imposes a fiduciary standard on brokers
who offer investment advice, requiring them
to act in their clients’ best interest. It also re-
quires enhanced disclosure by brokers, finan-
cial planners and investment advisers of their
obligations to their clients and calls for more
financing for the Securities and Exchange
Commission.
There was a long time when even those
common-sense requirements couldn’t make it
past the industry’s lobbyists. In the wake of the
financial crisis, few members of the committee
are likely to vote against them.
The fight instead is over whether the bill
should be amended to block the imposition of
a post-Enron auditing requirement on small
publicly traded companies, those with a mar-
ket capitalization of less than $75 million. In-
credibly, more than a year after the failures of
deregulation nearly brought the entire finan-
cial system down, some members are still in-
high-priced lobbyists. The F-22 was designed
for combat against the former Soviet Union
and has not been used in Iraq or Afghanistan.
The Air Force’s F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, a
Lockheed Martin weapon that begins produc-
tion in 2012, should be sufficient.
Obama did not get everything he wanted.
Congress defied a veto threat and insisted on
authorizing $560 million for research and pro-
curement of an alternate engine for the F-35
that the Pentagon says is unnecessary. Law-
makers authorized an extra $1.8 billion to buy
18 F-18 fighter jets — twice as many as the ad-
ministration sought.
Obama and Gates are going to have to work
hard to make sure that their hard-won victories
stay won. The House and Senate are negotiat-
ing a defense spending bill that experts predict
will include money for the C-17 transport plane.
They should also continue to press lawmakers
not to finance the alternate F-35 engine.
And they are going to have to be even bolder
next year: pressing Congress to halt produc-
tion of the V-22 Osprey and the Virginia class
submarine and make deeper trims in the still
unproven missile defense program.
The administration has also begun to make
progress toward changing the defense pro-
curement culture. Obama has wisely ended
no-bid contracts and signed bipartisan legis-
lation to improve how weapons are bought. It
will take political courage and persistence to
keep all those reforms going, especially next
year when many members of Congress are up
for re-election.

Under the post-Enron law, all public compa-
nies must have procedures in place to prevent
errors and fraud in the company’s financial
statements and have outside auditors assess
the effectiveness of those internal controls.
The S.E.C. long exempted small public com-
panies from the audit requirement, but in Sep-
tember, it announced the exemption would end
next June.
Small public companies are especially prone
to fraud, in part because they have less over-
sight. Such audits are essential protection for
investors.
Rep. Scott Garrett and John Adler of New
Jersey, are, nevertheless, determined to per-
manently exempt small public companies —
there are about 6,000 of them — from the audit
requirement. If that amendment fails Garrett
and Rep. Carolyn Maloney of New York have
another that would delay implementation
until 2011. Watching this fight play out, we de-
spair whether corporate America or Congress
have learned anything over the last year. We
are even more disturbed by reports that the
Obama administration is supporting the Gar-
rett-Adler amendment.

WASHINGTON — I had a four-hour dinner
once with Rush Limbaugh at the “21” Club in
Manhattan, back in the days when I was still
writing profiles as a “reporterette,” to use a
Limbaugh coinage.
He was charming, in a shy, lonely-guy way.
He arrived in a chauffeured town car and or-
dered $70-an-ounce Beluga, Porterhouse and
1990 Corton-Charlemagne.
He talked about Chopin’s Polonaise No. 6,
C.S. Lewis and how much he loved the end of
the movie “Love Story.”
In those days, he called himself a “harmless
little fuzzball.” He’s a lot less harmless now. As
he and Sarah Palin conduct their auto-da-fé
of moderate Republicans, Limbaugh is more
than ever the face of his party, as Rahm Eman-
uel said.
He’s also the mouth.
In an interview on “Fox News Sunday With
Chris Wallace,” Limbaugh accused the presi-
dent of trying to destroy the economy. “I have
to think that it may be on purpose,” he said,
“because this is just outrageous, what is hap-
pening — a denial of liberty, an attack on free-
dom.”
Asked about Afghanistan, another W. cata-
clysm that has left Obama agonizing, Lim-
baugh stated, “I also don’t think he cares much
about it.”
“He wants to manage this rather than
achieve victory.”
He told Wallace that “throughout the Iraq
war, it was Barack Obama and the Democrat
Party which actively sought the defeat of the
U.S. military.” Actually, rigorously examining
the government’s conduct of a war started on
false pretenses is the best sort of patriotism.
Military brass have told the White House
that this is the first time in eight years that they
have gotten the attention and resources that
they’ve needed in Afghanistan.
If W. had gone to Dover in the middle of the
night to salute the war dead, Limbaugh and Liz
Cheney would have been gushing about his pa-
triotism.
But since it’s Obama who at last showed up
there to see the brutal cost of war, they simply
have to dismiss the moving moment as a pub-
licity stunt.
Years ago, when I dubbed Dubya “The Boy
Emperor,” Limbaugh spewed a stream of per-
sonal invective about me that embarrassed
even my mother, a Limbaugh fan.
But now Limbaugh calls Obama the “man-
child president.”
At our long-ago dinner, Limbaugh credited
his success with being “one-dimensional.”
“I’m totally concerned with me,” he said. And
that was way before he got a contract for $400
million. But on Sunday, he ripped the president
for having “an out-of-this-world ego,” for being
“very narcissistic,” “immature, inexperienced,

Goodell, the commissioner of the
N.F.L., took the unusual step on
Tuesday of asking Congress to
change federal labor laws to pre-
vent states from interfering with
the league’s efforts to enforce its
banned substances policy.
Goodell’s appeal was prompted
by a federal court decision in Sep-
tember that has prevented the
N.F.L. from suspending two Min-
nesota Vikings players for taking
a diuretic, called StarCaps, that
contained a substance banned by
the league. The court ruled that
the N.F.L.’s policy was supersed-
ed by Minnesota state labor law
protecting workers.
The league is appealing the de-
cision, but the two Vikings have
been allowed to play. The N.F.L.
has allowed some New Orleans
Saints players to play even though
they were suspended for taking
the same banned substance.
But the decision in Minnesota —
and the possibility that other ath-
letes will seek relief under state
statutes — has raised questions
about the ability of the N.F.L. and
other professional sports leagues
to enforce their antidoping poli-
cies. That prompted Rep. Henry
A. Waxman, the chairman of the
Energy and Commerce Commit-
tee, to hold hearings Tuesday ti-
tled, “The N.F.L. StarCaps Case:
Are Sports’ Anti-Doping Pro-
grams at a Legal Crossroads?”
Goodell told the House Sub-
committee on Commerce, Trade
and Consumer Protection, “While
we are reluctant to seek action
from Congress, we believe that
this presents a rare case in which
narrow and tailored federal legis-
lative action is warranted to con-
firm the primacy of federal labor
law and respect agreements on
this important subject.”
But members of the subcom-
mittee were reluctant to grant
Goodell’s request. The N.F.L. is
appealing the judgment in Min-
nesota.
