You’ve Gotta Connect

Building Relationships That Lead to
Engaged Students, Productive Classrooms,
and Higher Achievement
James Alan Sturtevant
A secure and trusting relationship between teacher and
students is at the heart of a safe, productive classroom.
The positive effects of connection impact all aspects of
classroom life. Students come to class and like to be there,
they are more engaged in learning, they retain more of
what they learn, and their creativity is unleashed. There
are fewer behavior issues, lower dropout rates, and more
harmony between class members. With humor, practical
action steps for the teacher, and a few wacky stories, Jim
Sturtevant shows all educators how to operate a class-
room in ways that show acceptance, breed mutual respect,
handle and reduce conflict, build self-esteem, support
students in trouble, and add peace and enjoyment.
James Alan Sturtevant has been a high school economics
teacher for 30 years. He lives in Galena, Ohio.

Verbal Math Lesson series

Michael Levin, MD, and Charan Langton, MS
Everyone thinks kids hate math. But the truth is, kids don’t hate math—they hate worksheets! Writing down equations takes fine
motor skills that young children haven’t yet developed, making the process of learning math difficult and tedious. Math done mental-
ly, or verbal math, makes math fun. Children see math problems as a game and a challenge. In the second edition of this pioneering
educational bestseller, handwriting is removed from math problems to help children cement fundamental mathematical skills so that
they may solve problems without having to do any writing at all. Developed as a supplement to traditional math education, the lesson
is completely comprehensive, step-by-step, and leaves no area undone.
Michael Levin, MD, is a physician specializing in behavioral, attentional, and learning problems in young children. He maintains a pri-
vate practice in which he sees young children for various developmental and learning problems. Charan Langton, MS, is an engineer.
She writes an engineering and math-focused blog at www.complextoreal.com. They are the authors of Big Words for Little Kids and
The Reading Lesson. They both live in San Ramon, California.

Use It! Don’t Lose It! series

Illustrations by Kathleen Bullock
This series helps students use their skills so they won’t lose them. There are five problems a day, every day, for 36 weeks. The practice
activities are set up in a spiraling scope and sequence so that students practice skills at regular intervals. Each week’s problems are
based on a grade-level appropriate topic so every time a skill shows up, it has a new context, requiring students to dig into their
memories, recall what they know, and apply it to a new situation. Correlated to state and national standards, the books in this series
provide daily math practice.

Kathleen Bullock is a designer and an author and illustrator of books for children and young adults.

Correlated to state and national standards, the books in this series
provide daily language practice.

I Know an Old Lady

Who Swallowed a Fly
Songs by Alan Mills
Illustrations by PisHier
Performed by Thomas Hellman
and Emilie Clepper
• Co-op available
The children’s classic “I Know an Old Lady Who
Swallowed a Fly,” for which singer-songwriter
Alan Mills is best known, precedes a potpourri of
simple singable songs, often focusing on numbers
and letters and featuring hysterically funny animal
characters. Singers Thomas Hellman and Emilie
Clepper breathe new life into old traditions, per-
forming rootsy renditions of catchy songs written
for children more than 50 years ago.
Alan Mills was a Canadian folksinger, writer, and
actor. He was best known for popularizing
Canadian folk music, and he composed the clas-
sic folk song “I Know an Old Lady Who
Swallowed a Fly” (with lyrics by Rose Bonne).
PisHier is an illustrator, painter, and animator
whose work has been published in several
Canadian magazines and newspapers. He has
also illustrated several children’s books, including
Monstrueux secret de legumes and Simone et la
plus belle journée d’été. He lives in Quebec City.
Thomas Hellman is a bilingual singer-songwriter
who won the prestigious Felix-Leclerc Award in
2007. His debut French album L’appartement
received critical acclaim in both Quebec and
France. He has since released Departure Songs, a
compilation of his early songs recorded in McGill
University studios while he was working on his
master’s degree on Irish writer Samuel Beckett.
He lives in Montreal. Emilie Clepper is a musi-
cian who has opened for Martha Wainwright and
Feist and was invited by legendary Texas singer-
songwriter Tish Hinojosa to accompany her on
her main stage performance at the Kerrville Folk
Festival in Texas. She has been a repeat performer
at the Montreal Jazz Festival, the prestigious
Festival d’été in Quebec City, and the Festival
Pully-Quebec in Switzerland. She is the daughter
of Texas singer songwriter Russell Clepper. She

Excerpt:
For now, consider what you really want for youth. What do you want for their lives? What do you hope they develop and internalize
within? What opportunities, people, or experiences would you like to see in their lives? What hopes do you have for their futures?
On any given day when we ask these questions of adults—and we ask them a lot—we hear the real hearts of caring adults who want
to connect with youth, affirm their dreams, pass on values, build skills, and let them know they are valued just as they are. They
want youth to have a sense of hope, know their own potential, realize their power, be confident, be safe, and be surrounded by
people who care for them. In addition, these adults want young people to care for others, be resilient, and have integrity and
empathy. All these qualities are the really good “stuff” of live—the stuff that matters and makes life worthwhile.
At the same time, while reflecting on what they want for youth, these adults realize that they have a role to play in bringing about
the good life that they want for youth. They realize that they must be willing to listen, affirm, appreciate, cherish, support, and
offer the best guidance and wisdom they can to young people. They do this because they care deeply and believe in the power and
potential within each young person they know.
If you picked up this book, it’s because you care deeply about youth, want the best for them, and are looking for ways to engage,
enrich and help them grow in character and wisdom. Perhaps your heart goes out to those who don’t quite fit in. Perhaps you delight
in seeing the light bulb go off when they discover something about themselves or master a skill. Maybe it’s the rebellious child who
gets you because you understand those impulses and you’ve been there. Or, maybe you’ve always had a soft spot for those young
people who are so often misunderstood and alienated by others because they are “different” in regard to preferences, intellectual
or physical abilities, or ethnicity.
This handbook is designed to help you create the very best experience for the youth you’re working with. It provides just enough
of the theory and science behind a positive, strength-based approach to help you understand why this perspective is so important.
You will find stories, suggestions, and how-to guidance for running your program from a strength-based perspective.

Dealing with Feelings series

Elizabeth Crary
Illustrations by Jean Whitney
This series recognizes that children are entitled to their feelings even when their behavior needs to be corrected. It acknowledges
specific feelings and offers children several ways to deal with them. Each book features a choose-your-own-adventure format, and
shows what different outcomes of choices might be—allowing children to back up and try another solution if they don’t like the
outcome, or to try a variety of choices to see how each might turn out.
Elizabeth Crary is the award-winning author of more than 40 children’s and child-guidance publications. She has taught parenting
education and established Parenting Press in 1979. She lives in Seattle. Jean Whitney is an illustrator.
