II game of Cricket.
5. BRISTOL
BRILLIANCE
Coco-Cola Cup – 22nd April
DESERT STORM –
PART I
Needing a big innings to
help India reach the
finals, Sachin
Tendulkar played
arguably his best ODI
innings few days short
of his 25th birthday. This
innings is referred as
the Desert Storm, by
those who were lucky to
witness it. The Aussie
attack was strong and
the total imposing. The
way SRT maneuvered
the chase was a lesson
for everyone. The only
fault in the innings –
India couldn’t win the
match.
DESERT STORM –
Coco-Cola Cup Final – 24th April
PART II
The final this time
around and Sachin was
desperate to win the
Cup for the Indians. 2
centuries in 3 days
helped the Indian team
beat the Aussies very
easily. The favorites
faced the brunt of SRT
to such an extent that
their bowlers (especially
Shane Warne) would get
nightmares on the very
thought of bowling to
him. Kasprowicz
recently remarked that
he was happy not
bowling to SRT now!!!
HYDERABAD
Hero-Honda Cup – 5th Match
HURRICANE
Successfully chasing a
score of 350 is possible if
2 or 3 players score a
big score. This legend
scored more than 50% of
India’s score, only to fail
by 3 runs at the end. A
wonderfully paced
knock which gave a
glimpse of the little
man’s wide array of
strokes (including some
that had been put away
in the attic) even at the
age of 36. The humid
weather added to the
complexity of the run-
chase. The match-loss
must have been heart-
breaking for the
veteran.
CENTURION
ICC World Cup - 36th match, Pool A
SACHIN
India-Pakistan match in
the 2003 World Cup –
need I say more?
Chasing a score of 274,
Sachin gave a start that
his partner, Sehwag,
would have held close to
his heart. The over
against Shoaib Akhtar
is very well known to all
cricket fans in India and
Pakistan. After this
match, Shoaib was not
that force again. India
eased past the score and
made the final. This
match felt as good as
the World Cup that we
never won that year.
Commonwealth Bank Series – 1st final
SYDNEY MARVEL
First century on Oz soil
to steer India to their
first-ever win over
Australia in Sydney
came about thanks to
Sachin’s wonderful
knock. This innings
seemed to be a master-
class to the non-striker,
Rohit Sharma, on how
to play a match-winner.
The two rotated the
strike well and took
India past the target
easily (in hindsight).
This was Sachin’s reply
to his detractors who
always spoke about his
Final Failures.
BRISTOL
ICC World Cup - 15th match, Group A
BRILLIANCE
What do you say about a
person who loses his
father in the middle of a
tournament (doesn’t
matter if it’s a World
Cup), goes home for the
funeral and then heads
right back to the
tournament. Amazing
commitment from the
legend. First match
after the loss, SRT
scores a beautiful
hundred. Doesn’t matter
that the century was
against a lowly Kenya –
the ability to put one’s
personal loss behind for
the team’s cause was
very well evident
