SUSTAINABLE FUTURES
INTRODUCTION
Hemp is a plant with hundreds of different uses its versatilaty is its main attribute. The
world is currently is running out of resources. The main one being oil, hemp has the
potential to be turned into bio-ethanol. As we reach peak fuel which is the point where fuel
production cannot keep up with demand. Taking advantage of this renewable wonder plant
I believe we can improve sustainability across many different industries.
3. BUSINESS SECTION
3.1 Vision
My vision is full-scale bio-ethanol production from hemp to ease the inveitable issue of oil
running out. Man-kinds unsustainable use of this non-renewable resoure is eventually going
to lead to problems. I believe that small-scale hemp production to began with will ease
pressure on the public and to also allow the industry to establish itself and also mitagate the
effects of rising fuel prices.
3.2 Industry Analysis: Hemp Industry
Industry: The current hemp industry is fairly small as a result of marijuana prohibition and
hemps close resemblences to the cannabis plant is not the easy plant to grow.
Force: High/Low: Justification:
Buyer power: High The buyer power for an alternate product to
regular fossil fuels would without a doubt be in
high demand. Currently oil companies own some
of the biggest companies in the world but that
will all change, opening an extremely large
market.

3
Supplier power: High The supplier would be high, firstly we would be a
supplier of hemp ethanol. But also suppliers
would supply equipment for the production of
the ethanol.
Threat of new entrants: Low To grow hemp is not hard at all so in that sense
new entrants could enter the market but on the
flip side actually having the equipment to make
the raw product into something valuable would
require sizable investment.
Threat of substitutes: High As technology grows and evolves there are going
to be many alternate way of generating energy.
Such as solar, fuel cell and even compressed air.
This is not a bad thing though as alternate energy
sources to oil is the imperative idea.
Rivalry among existing
competitors:
High In the energy industry there is already high
competition. This competition stems from the
existing wealth of the large oil companies.
Alternative energy sources threat
Overall attractiveness of the industry: Overall the alternate energy market is an growing
market, this makes it quite attractive has it is only going to attract more attention and
investment in the coming years.
3.3 Customers and Thei r Needs
Customers not only require but deserve a sustainable, renewable energy resource. Almost
everyone in the developed world has access to a automobile and it is there lifeline to the
outside world. Without the ability to move around a lot of business would began to failure
or alternatively if it became to expensive for a company to run its company. E.g a trucking

company will have to dramatically raise prices to carry freight if fuel prices become to
expensive. Essientially consumers need access to a cheap reliable source of energy, also a
source of energy that doesnt flactuate in price so badly.
3.4 The Product and Service
How this product will meet the needs of the consumer base is that is gives them an
alternative to conventional fuels. It is also more environmentally friendly. It means countries
dont need to be dependent on other nations for the energy needs. Hemp will grow in most
climates around the world. One acre of hemp produces 3,785 litres of fuel (ref.1). And only
takes around 12-14 weeks to mature from a seedlings. Using the stem of the hemp plant to
create
3.5 Suppliers and Partners
It would be imperative to get the right partners and suppliers for this project. Firstly the
people who work on this project would need to be fully commited to the idea.
For this particular business idea it would make sense for me to partner with large land
holders with would give me the ability to grow the hemp. For this entire operation heavy
investment will be needed to fund equipment for the transformation of the hemp plant into
ethanol.
Supplier 1: PGG Wrightsons. PGG wrightsons would provide a platform for the growers of
the hemp. PGG would supply the nessacary equipment to grow and harvest the hemp. PGG
also is very well established in New Zealand meaning that it has good access to most parts of
New Zealand.
Partner 1: AA(Automobile Association) Partner with AA would allow for benefits for
customers with biofuel enabled cars.
Partner 2: Z New Zealand, partnering with one of New Zealands largests service station
would offer the basis to install ethanol petrol pumps around New Zealand. This would make
the technology worth while for people, as it would be just as easy to use ethanol as started
petrol.

3.6 Strategy:
The plan for the business would firstly require people willing to have there cars run on
ethanol, essientially this technology is already in place but for some reason is still all to rare.
The business stradegy would be to start with small scale hemp production in the north of
New Zealand. The reasons for this is there is a lot of land in this region and it also has the
optimal growing conditions for this plant. This intial start would be put in place as a testing
stage and from then on would hopefully expand into bigger markets and if the intial launch
is succesful there is no reason for this not to be the case.
3.7 Value Chain Activity: Making the product or service
The most important value chain activity for this business is to Make the product or service.
Before anything else is done it is essiential the product is fully functioning and works to a
high standard. This is the most important part of the value chain as if the product doesnt
perform to a set standard then what is the true point.
3.8 Business Processes
3.8.1. Human-intensive processes
PROCESS This is the process where humans play a large role in each micro-process of the
business this is essientially in place because of the complexity or in some cases the simplicity
of the process at hand. This can lead to problems though one being human error.

3.9 Functionalities
3.9.1. WHAT-I F ANALYSIS PROCESS
Will show the predicted forecast for sales for the business. It is a good guide
to how the business is expected to perform.Rubber cheese lancashire edam

Although not completely accurate it will help with giving a fair idea of how
the business is forecasted to perform.
3.9.2. OPTI MIZATION PROCESS
Helps figure the best way to run a specific business.
Looks for trends and uses this to help output data on how best to operate the
given business.
3.10 Systems

3.10. 1. KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS This system is the process of capturing and
processing data. It classifys specific and important data down into valuable data. This can be
used to help better the business.
3.10. 2. MANAGEMENT INFOMATION SYSTEM Management information systems will allow
managers/executives to make more informed decsions on the day to day running of the
business. This will help decide the best way to run and promote the business.
3.10. 3. TRANSACTION PROCESSI NG & DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEMS This information system
will enable a manager to see the raw data of how the business is performing on a day to day
basis. Everything from order entry to inventory data. This data will ultimately help the
manager decide how best to run the business.

CONCLUSION
All in all the combination of given Business processes and information systems will give my
business concept the best shot at succeeding. All this combined with the actual business
idea itself gives me a strong chance at turning this from a concept to a reality.
