A380-LEVEL I - ATA 23 Communications
The first A380 technical manual, the "Airplane Characteristics for Airport Planning," was released this month. It can be consulted and/or downloaded from the A380 Family page on Airbus' web site at www.airbus.com. This is the first time a technical manual of this nature has been made available so early, some three years before the first flight of the aircraft.
The Airplane Characteristics manual provides specific A380 data needed by airport authorities and planners to support the operation of the A380 within their airports. Data such as airplane dimensions, take off and landing distances, terminal operations data, taxiing, parking and pavement loading requirements are provided for the A380-800 and A380-800F, the passenger and freighter versions of the A380.
Airbus has been working with planning teams from 50 major airports in five continents to ensure smooth handling of the A380 when it enters service in 2006 and the Airplane Characteristics manual is a major support for this.
Following release of this first manual and up to entry into service of the A380, Airbus will deliver a full range of technical data for the maintenance, engineering, material support and flight operations departments of A380 airline customers. Technical data for the A380 will be available in electronic format according to the most recent aviation industry standards, which are more efficient and user friendly. They will be accessible through Airbus On Line Services, the Airbus portal for Customer Support.

L M 2 3 P 1 C O M S 0 0 0 0 1 VOICE & DATA COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS PRESENTATION Data communication layout Data is transmitted between the aircraft and ground stations including Air Traffic Control (ATC) and Airline Operational Control (AOC). This transmitted data is used for various purposes, which include regulatory and maintenance requirements. The Avionics Communication Router (ACR) system is the main router for data communications. This system routes the messages to the best communication system that suits the quality of service requirements defined by the user applications. The communication systems linked to the ACR are HF, VHF and SATCOM systems. In the Open World, specific data is routed by the Cabin Router Units (CRUs), which are part of the Network Server System (NSS). These routers are linked especially to the optional Wireless Airport Communication System (WACS). SATCOM system can also be used if the High Speed Data Unit (HSDU) is installed. The RAIMS also manages the call indications on the Radio and audio Management Panels (RMPs). The main components of the RAIMS are: - 2 Audio Management Units (AMUs) for audio signals management. - 3 RMPs, which act as the Human Machine Interface (HMI) for radio and audio management. The three RMPs are identical and interchangeable. There are bi-directional dialog busses between the 3 RMPs: this makes possible the updating of RMPs information. They manage all audio signals to and from the cockpit, especially between the cockpit and the communication means. Cockpit crew uses the RMPs to select the communication means with the transmission and reception keys dedicated to each communication system. In the cockpit, a potentiometer on each side is used for the adjustment of pilot and 1 st officer loudspeakers (two each). Radio Navigation and Flight Warning Systems are linked to the AMUs to broadcast indicating and warning messages through the loudspeakers. These messages include a/c altitude, ground station identification, aural warnings ... L M 2 3 P 2 R A I M S 0 0 0 1 RADIO & AUDIO INTEGRATING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM PRESENTATION Calls management The RAIMS manages visual and aural indication of calls. Aircraft call SELCAL calls are detected by the AMUs on reception of coded VHF or HF signals. Coded signals are compared to a SELCAL code specific to the aircraft. This code is selected through the Onboard Maintenance System. When the ground personnel initiates a call to the cockpit crew of a particular aircraft using satellite communication, the SATCOM system sends the information to both AMUs and RMPs. When a call is detected on radio or satellite communication means, the amber "CALL" light flashes on the transmission key corresponding to the communication means it comes from. An aural warning is also heard on loudspeakers and boomsets. Cabin crew call Cabin crew can also call the cockpit crew. This function comes from the Cabin Intercommunication Data System (CIDS). When the call is initiated, the amber "ATT" light flashes on the CAB transmission key. An aural warning is also heard on loudspeakers and boomsets. Ground crew call The Cockpit-to-Ground Crew Call System is part of the RAIMS. Cockpit crew can initiate a call to the ground mechanics by pressing the MECH P/BSW on the CALLS panel. This action activates the horn at the NLG area and a blue light on the service panel. The ground mechanics can also call the cockpit using the COCKPIT CALL P/BSW on the service panel. The amber "MECH" light on the INT transmission key will flash and an aural warning will sound on loudspeakers and boomsets. L M 2 3 P 4 C V R S 0 0 0 0 1 COCKPIT VOICE RECORDING SYSTEM PRESENTATION Principle The Cockpit Voice Recording System is mainly composed of: - a CVR, which memory can store two hours of audio recording and record the data link messages during this recording period. - a CVR control unit, which is used for the manual control and monitoring of the CVR. - a cockpit area microphone, which picks up and transmits to the CVR direct conversations between crew members, aural warnings in the cockpit and all other ambient noises from the cockpit. Recording The CVR records: - 3 audio channels from the Audio Management Unit (AMU) 1 integrated in the Radio Audio Interface Management System (RAIMS) (one for each cockpit station). - 1 audio channel from the cockpit area microphone, which is amplified by the CVR control unit. - All necessary data link communication messages directly from the ATC applications. Power supply The CVR is permanently supplied with 115VAC. It initiates the recording upon reception of ground discrete via the logic relay wiring. It mainly depends on A/C flight/ground condition and whether the engine is running or not. On ground, pressing the ReCorDeR GrouND ConTroL P/BSW can manually set the CVR in recording configuration. This manual mode allows pre-flight checklist recording and maintenance/test operations. CVR Control Unit The CVR control unit is installed on the overhead panel. It is used for the testing of the CVR and the listening of recorded audio signals. The recorder memory can store two hours of audio recording. When the memory is full, an overwriting function starts. On ground only, under specific conditions, erasure of the CVR memories is possible. L M 2 3 P 5 E T A C S 0 0 0 1 COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM MAINTENANCE (1) Communications safety items When you work on the communications system, make sure that you obey all the AMM safety precautions. This will prevent injury to persons and/or damage to the aircraft. Here is an overview of main safety precautions relative to the communications system. Make sure that all persons stay away from the base of the HF antenna (in a zone of 5 meters radius) when it is energized. The antenna uses high power when it transmits and can cause injury to persons. Do not transmit with the HF system during aircraft refueling. Transmission with the HF system during refueling can cause injury and/or start a fire. When the mechanic call horn operates, the sound level is more than 110 dB. Continuous exposure to noise at this level can harm your hearing.
