Harvey Milk honored with stamp;

govt plans study on LGBT history

By CHRIS JOHNSON

With Pride season in full swing, it seems new
victories and milestones for LGBT equality are
happening every day.
Late last week, government o cials unveiled a
U.S. postage stamp honoring slain San Francisco
Supervisor and longtime LGBT rights activist
Harvey Milk.
And today, Secretary of the Interior Sally
Jewell is expected to announce plans at the
historic Stonewall Inn in New York City for a new,
groundbreaking study on LGBT history, according
to three sources familiar with the event.

Stadium deal could displace D.C. LGBT Center
Mayor Vincent Gray on May 23 submitted legislation to the City Council calling for a
series of land deals to facilitate the building of a new soccer stadium that could displace
the D.C. Center for the LGBT Community from its current home at 14th and U Street,
N.W. in three years.
Among other things, Grays proposal would trade the Reeves Center municipal
building where the D.C. Center is currently renting space to a private developer in
exchange for obtaining land owned by the developer in the Buzzards Point section in
Southwest Washington, where the soccer stadium would be built.
No current Reeves tenants will need to be relocated until the new Reeves Center is
nished in approximately three years, a statement released by the mayors o ce says.
The District will make every eort to keep select tenants in the vicinity of the 14th and U
Street location for continuation of services to their target constituents, the statement says.
Gray has told D.C. Center o cials that his administration would nd a suitable new
location for the Center, possibly in another city-owned building in the 14th and U area
if the stadium deal results in the closing of the Reeves Center. Under Grays plan for
the soccer stadium, all of the city government agencies currently housed in the Reeves
Center would be moved to a new Reeves Center planned to be built in Anacostia.
Several members of the Council, including mayoral candidate Muriel Bowser (D-Ward
4), have expressed skepticism over the soccer stadium deal, saying they might vote
against approving the legislation submitted by Gray last week. Grays timetable for
trading the Reeves Center for the land in Buzzards point is linked to a quick approval of
the proposal by the Council before it recesses for its two-month summer break in July.
If the Council doesnt act on the proposal until after it returns from its break in
September, the closing of the Reeves Center at 14th and U Street, N.W., could be delayed
beyond the three-year projected timetable in the mayors proposal.
The DC Center continues to work with the District government on the potential
relocation of The Center should the need arise, said Center board president Michael
Fowler in a statement to the Blade.
We look forward to exploring all options but remain committed to a location that
best serves our clients and their needs, he said. When and if the time comes for us to
relocate, we will look at all options and make a decision based upon the strategic vision
of The DC Center and the needs of the community we serve. We do not anticipate any
disruptions in services we provide.

2nd gay candidate enters Ward 1 school board race

David Do, a former D.C. government o cial and current graduate student and
teaching assistant at the University of Maryland, led papers on May 16 to become a
candidate for the Ward 1 seat on the D.C. State Board of Education.
He becomes the second gay candidate competing for the seat. In April, LGBT rights
and education advocate Scott Simpson entered the race. Gay D.C. Council member Jim
Graham (D-Ward 1), who lost his re-election bid in the citys April 1 primary, has said he
is also considering running for the seat.
Prior to enrolling in graduate school, where he is studying urban planning, Do served
as a correspondence management specialist in the mayors Correspondence Unit under
Mayors Adrian Fenty and Vincent Gray.
David is a community organizer and educator, a statement on his campaign website
says. He knows children need proper education to succeed and that there needs to be
an achievable standard set for our schools.
The statement notes that as a former public school student and child of a family
that came to the U.S. as Vietnam War refugees, Do, who learned English as a second
language, experienced rst-hand the struggles and stigma faced by immigrant youth.
He will put this experience to good use helping to improve educational programs for
D.C.s public schools, the statement says.

Forum to highlight D.C. Gay Liberation Front

D.C.s Rainbow History Project and the Historical Society of Washington are co-
hosting a public panel discussion on June 7 entitled, Gay Power to Gay People: The Gay
Liberation Front-D.C.
A statement released by Rainbow History Project says the panel will reunite four
former members of the long defunct GLF-D.C., who will talk about the organizations role
as a radical manifestation of the edgling gay rights movement in the nations capital.
The impact of the GLF on the local community, and the countless organizations
which its members founded, are a key part of the history tracked by Rainbow History
Project, the statement says.
In a time of rising assimilation by the LGBT community, its crucial to remember the
radical roots of our equality movement, as exemplied by Gay Liberation Front-DC,
said Rainbow History Project board member Philip Clark, who will serve as moderator
of the panel.
The panelists include GLF members or participants Brian Miller, Kent Jarratt, Michael
Yarr, and Nancy Tucker. Tucker served as founding editor of the Gay Blade, which later
became the Washington Blade.
Items related to GLF-DC from the Rainbow History Project collections will be on exhibit
during the panel, which is scheduled to take place 11 a.m. June 7 at the Carnegie Library
at Mount Vernon Square, 801 K Street, N.W.

Bowser, Catania speak
at Black Pride reception
D.C. Council members Muriel Bowser (D-Ward 4) and David Catania (I-At-
Large), the two main contenders in the citys Nov. 4 mayoral election, put
partisan politics aside last week in remarks before the opening reception and
awards ceremony for the citys 24th annual Black Pride celebration.
The two praised each other for their support for the cause of LGBT equality and
praised Black Pride as an important event that highlights the progress of the LGBT
civil rights movement since the rst Black Pride celebration took place in 1980.
D.C. Congressional Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D) and Council member
Anita Bonds (D-At-Large) also spoke at the event. Bonds presented a resolution
approved by the D.C. Council recognizing the Black Pride events and Sterling
Washington, director of the Mayors O ce of GLBT Aairs, presented a
proclamation issued by Mayor Vincent Gray honoring the Black Pride events.
This is our largest opening reception by far, said Earl Fowlkes, CEO of the
Center for Black Equity, the LGBT advocacy group that organizes Black Pride
celebrations in D.C. and in more than a dozen other cities in the U.S. and abroad.
It was nice to have elected o cials come out, Fowlkes said. And I think both Muriel
and David were very gracious to each other and to us, he said. Both of them have
been friends to the LGBT community and particularly to the black LGBT community.
Fowlkes said between 300 and 350 people attended the opening ceremony,
which took place at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in downtown D.C.
As many as 30,000 people were expected to participate in a series of Black
Pride events May 23-26 that included forums and workshops, a lm festival,
dance parties, a block party at the Fairgrounds next to Washington Nationals
Stadium, an outdoor health and wellness festival near Dupont Circle and D.C.
Black Prides annual Memorial Day picnic at Ft. Dupont Park.
Its easy for us to look at the progress weve made, Catania told the gathering.
But let me be clear. There is still work to do.
He noted his role in introducing and helping to pass legislation on marriage
equality, transgender rights and improvements in the city ght against AIDS. He
said he is committed to continuing those eorts.
Bowser sounded a similar theme, saying many of the people attending the
event have played a key role in advancing LGBT equality in the city and pledged
to work with them to build on the progress already made.
And although we are progressive and although we have achieved a lot in
the District of Columbia, that progress and prosperity hasnt touched all eight
wards, has it? she said. It hasnt touched all Washingtonians. It hasnt touched
everybody in this community either.

Council considering bill to
criminalize bulk theft of
free newspapers

By LOU CHIBBARO JR.

lchibbaro@washblade.com
The Washington Blade this week
appealed to its readers for help in
identifying a man captured on video
removing and discarding copies of the
Blade from a distribution box on the
sidewalk in front of the Blade o ce on
14th Street, N.W.
The same man can be seen in the
video posted on YouTube and Facebook
reaching into the box and ripping o a
clip intended to hold a copy of the paper
against the boxs window.
Chronic and progressively nastier
vandalism has targeted Blade boxes,
denying readers their newspapers for
approximately two years, said Blade
Publisher Lynne Brown.
Frustrated by the loss of papers,
property and concern for readers safety,
Blade staers set up video surveillance,
Brown said. If anyone recognizes this
man, we will take the next step.
For more than two years, one or more
vandals have been damaging Blade
distribution boxes throughout the city,
breaking the windows or the clips on the
boxes and removing and in some cases
disposing in nearby trash bins stacks
of papers, preventing readers from
obtaining them.
In other cases, the vandal or vandals
have tossed feces into the boxes, forcing
the Blades distribution company to
transport the boxes to a warehouse
where they are steam cleaned. Company
o cials have said the as-yet-unidentied
perpetrator sometimes targets the same
boxes with excrement shortly after they
are returned to the sidewalks.
This video footage is a rst step
at protecting ourselves, Brown said.
Posting it online and asking our readers
to help identify him is the second step,
she said. We are fed up and moving more
aggressively to address the situation.
At the Blades request, D.C. Mayor
Vincent Gray earlier this year submitted
to the City Council legislation that would
make it a misdemeanor oense to steal
large quantities of free newspapers.
The Blade sought the legislation after
D.C. police said they did not have legal
authority to arrest someone for taking a
free newspaper regardless of how many
copies are taken.
On the mayors behalf, Council Chair
Phil Mendelson (D-At-Large) introduced
in February the Criminal Penalties for the
Theft of Newspapers Act of 2014. The
legislation would make it unlawful for a
person to knowingly or willingly obtain or
exert unauthorized control over newspapers
with the intent to prevent another person
from reading the newspapers.
The bill calls for a penalty of up to 60
days in jail and a ne of up to $500 or
both for someone convicted of violating
the proposed law.
The bill is currently pending before
the Councils Judiciary and Public Safety
Committee, which is chaired by Council
member Tommy Wells (D-Ward 6). It
would cover all of the more than a dozen
free distribution newspapers in the city.
Newspaper publishers have reported
an ongoing problem of vandalism and
theft of all of the newspapers from
newspaper distribution boxes, Gray
said in a letter to the Council. I urge the
Council to take prompt and favorable
action on this legislation.

Several local AIDS groups
support PrEP for clients

By LOU CHIBBARO JR.

lchibbaro@washblade.com
An o cial with Whitman-Walker
Health, D.C.s largest AIDS treatment and
service organization, said that similar to
current nationwide trends, a relatively
small number of people at risk for HIV
infection in the D.C. area are taking a
drug approved for preventing them from
contracting HIV.
Dr. Richard Elion, Whitman-Walkers
director of clinical research, told the
Washington Blade that fewer than 50
Whitman-Walker clients have signed up
so far for the prescription drug Truvada,
a daily pill approved by the U.S. Food and
Drug Administration as a pre-exposure
prophylaxis, or PrEP, to greatly reduce the
chances of becoming infected with HIV.
So the uptake on PrEP is that the
District has been sluggish at most places,
Elion said in discussing the local demand
for taking Truvada as a prevention pill.
Its important to have a lot of
educational eorts on this because this
is a prevention strategy that to me has
not really gotten the recognition and the
press that it deserves, he said.
O cials with at least three other local
organizations that provide AIDS-related
services and prevention programs
targeting gay and bisexual men Us
Helping Us, SMYAL, and Metro Teen
AIDS said they, too, believe PrEP is
an important new prevention strategy
that should be encouraged for people
deemed at high risk for HIV, especially
young gay and bisexual men.
Us Helping Us fully supports PrEP and
will publicize it to our clients through
meetings and social media, said Ron
Simmons, the groups executive director.
Us Helping Us reaches out to black gay
and bisexual men in the D.C. area on
AIDS prevention and other AIDS-related
programs.
Adam Tenner, executive director of
Metro Teen AIDS, and Andrew Barnett,
executive director of SMYAL, each said
they are encouraged over the potential
PrEP has for their clients, who range in
age from 13 to 21. But the two said they
have yet to determine whether PrEP is
appropriate for youth as young as 13
through 17.
We are encouraged over the
eectiveness of the treatment in
preventing infection, Tenner said. But
we are going to be very cautious about
PrEP for adolescents. For kids 18 and
older there are fewer questions, he said.
Tenner and Barnett each said they are
awaiting guidance from experts, including
pediatricians, on the advisability of
prescribing Truvada to people as young
as 13 or 14. According to Tenner, youth
of that age often are sexually active and
at risk for sexually transmitted diseases,
including HIV.
He said Metro Teen AIDS sponsors HIV
prevention programs targeting youth in
that age range but has yet to embrace
PrEP for young teens without having
access to more information.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention, which earlier this month
issued new guidelines advocating the
wider use of PrEP for HIV prevention, and
the American Academy of Pediatrics didnt
immediately respond to an inquiry from
the Blade about the advisability of PrEP for
youth between 13 and 17 years old.
The Los Angeles-based AIDS Healthcare
Foundation, the nations largest AIDS
service and treatment organization,
which has facilities in D.C. and Maryland,
has expressed strong opposition to PrEP,
saying it has the potential to discourage
condom use.
Michael Weinstein, the organizations
CEO, has pointed to studies showing that
large numbers of people enrolled in the
studies failed to take the Truvada pill on a
daily basis as prescribed, placing them at
risk for HIV infection.
Weinstein told the Blade that although
AIDS Healthcare Foundation opposes
the widespread use of PrEP, it believes
it should ultimately be up to a patient
and his or her doctor as to whether to
enroll in PrEP. He said his organizations
medical clinics, including the one in D.C.
and Temple Hills, Md., would not refuse
to prescribe Truvada to people who
specically request to go on PrEP.

Thank you to the 15 democrats who put me over the top on the democratic
write-in, wrote Fleck on his Facebook page on May 27. And thank you to the
three thousand plus republicans who voted based on my job performance.
While a lot can still happen legally, today is a new day and if we are ultimately
successful in our bid to continue thru the fall, rest assured, I will give it my all.
Fleck, who was rst elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in
2006, came out in 2012 during an interview with a local newspaper.
He told the Patriot-News on May 27 he feels his opponents voted against him
because of his sexual orientation.
I think we all know what the race was about, said Fleck. For the most part it
was a vote against me, not necessarily a vote for [Irvin.]
Fired teachers request papal audience
WASHINGTON The Human Rights Campaign on May 27 delivered a letter to the
Vatican on behalf of nine teachers who have lost their jobs at Roman Catholic schools
or churches because they are gay or lesbian or have supported LGBT family members.
Nicholas Coppola, a former religious education teacher at St. Anthonys
Catholic Church in Oceanside, N.Y., who was removed from public duties at the
Long Island parish after he married his same-sex partner, is among those who
signed the letter that requests an audience with Pope Francis.
Unfortunately, we are a group bonded together not just by Catholic values,
reads the letter. We are a group of teachers, administrators and lay people who
have all lost our jobs simply because of who we love.
LGBT Catholics have welcomed Francis more moderate tone on marriage,
homosexuality and other gay-specic issues since he succeeded Pope Benedict
XVI in March 2013. The Vaticans position on the aforementioned topics has not
changed in spite of the Argentine-born pontis more conciliatory tone.
Stonewall veteran dies
BROOKLYN, N.Y. A lesbian activist who took part in the 1969 Stonewall riots
died on May 24.
The Associated Press reported that Storm DeLarverie died at a Brooklyn
nursing home. She was 93.
The AP noted DeLarverie, who was born to a black mother and a white father in New
Orleans in 1920, was a member of a traveling drag troupe in the 1950s who performed
while dressed as a man. She was among those who fought against members of the
New York Police Department during a raid on the Greenwich Village bar in June 1969
that became a watershed moment in the modern LGBT rights movement.
DeLarveries funeral was scheduled to take place on Thursday.
Anti-bias bill becomes
campaign issue after
marriage ruling
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
As a contentious mid-term election
for control of Congress approaches,
the Employment Non-Discrimination
Act has emerged as a campaign issue
in competitive U.S. House districts in
Pennsylvania following a court decision
granting marriage equality there.
Pennsylvania is now the only state
that has marriage equality but lacks
explicit non-discrimination protections
for LGBT people in the workplace. Two
Democratic congressional candidates are
making ENDA an issue against potentially
vulnerable Republicans.
Mary Ellen Balchunis, whos worked
as a political science professor and is
challenging Rep. Pat Meehan (R-Pa.) in
the race for the states 7th congressional
district, and Kevin Strouse, an Iraq and
Afghanistan veteran whos running
against Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.) in the
8th congressional district, are both calling
for action on ENDA.
In an email statement to the Blade,
Balchunis said she supports ENDA and
pledged to turn up the pressure on
Meehan over ENDA if he doesnt declare
his support for the legislation.
I can support this bill, Balchunis said.
I do not believe in discrimination against
any group of individuals. If Congressman
Meehan does not support this legislation,
I will call him out on it.
Strouse similarly said he supports
ENDA and that passage of the
legislation is necessary in the aftermath
of U.S. District Judge John Jones IIIs
ruling in favor of marriage equality in
Pennsylvania.
I absolutely support ENDA, and
would work to bring it to a vote by any
means, Strouse said. On Tuesday the
courts rightly struck down Pennsylvanias
ban on marriage equality, yet here in
Pennsylvania, LGBT people can still be
red from their jobs because of who they
love. This is wrong.
Strouse added passage of ENDA is
also smart for business because putting
an end to discrimination will make
Pennsylvanias 8th congressional district
a more attractive place to work for young
professionals.
Congressman Fitzpatricks failure
to address this issue is only the latest
example that he is not a leader who
works for the best interests of our district,
and lets his partisan ideology get in the
way of economic growth, Strouse said.
When I am elected, I will work to pass
ENDA because its the right thing to do,
and would bring economic growth to our
district.
The o ces of Meehan and Fitzpatrick
didnt respond to multiple requests from
the Washington Blade to comment on
their position on the ENDA.
But both lawmakers are considered
potential supporters of ENDA. Meehan
and Fitzpatrick were among the
Republicans in the U.S. House who
voted last year for reauthorization of
the Violence Against Women Act, which
contained non-discrimination protections
for LGBT people.
The race between these Republicans
and their Democratic challengers
could be close. According to a Public
Policy Poll published in October 2013,
Meehan would lose to a generic
Democratic opponent, 40-43, and
Fitzpatrick would lose to a generic
Democratic opponent, 44-46. However,
this poll came out immediately after
the government shutdown, so the
situation for these Republicans may
have improved since then.
House Speaker John Boehner continues
to bottle up ENDA.
Last week during a news conference,
the Washington Blade asked Boehner
whether Republican Gov. Tom
Corbetts decision to allow marriage
equality to come to a state without
LGBT non-discrimination protections
should prompt the Republican-
controlled U.S. House to finish the job
by passing ENDA. The speaker was
succinct in his response.
I think well leave that decision to the
governor of Pennsylvania, Boehner said.

Small businesses
expect boost from
Pa. marriage ruling
By JUSTIN PELIGRI
There are more than 22,000 LGBT
couples living in Pennsylvania, according
to the 2010 U.S. Census, and many of
them have already tied the knot since the
states ban on same-sex marriage was
struck down last week.
I am happy that many couples that
have been together for a long time can
nally be legal, said Kim Haggerty, owner
of the Pod Shop Flowers in New Hope, Pa.
It is heartwarming to see.
Experts predict that last weeks ruling in
Whitewood v. Wolf will bode well for local
businesses as couples spend their money in
Pennsylvania instead of in neighboring states
that have been more welcoming in the past.
I think we will see more weddings, said
Brittany Booz, co-owner of the Golden
Pheasant Inn, located about 20 minutes
outside of New Hope. I have some
customers on a regular basis that have
stated, As soon as we are recognized in the
state of Pennsylvania, this is the place that
wed love to have our ceremony at. I hope
that more people do get married, whether
it be at our place or another place.
Booz said her inn, which hosts about 20
weddings a year, plans to host same-sex
weddings in the same way as opposite-
sex weddings.
I dont think whether its a male and a
male or a female and a female or a male
and a female it should change how you
move forward with an event, she said.
Our philosophy is equality for all.
Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett, who
just months ago likened gay marriage
to incest, said he wouldnt challenge the
courts ruling striking down his states
marriage ban.
People who are looking to move
to a state or take a job and they want
marriage equality now can look to
Pennsylvania and say OK, theyre in the
running, said Bruce Yelk, who manages
the LGBT marketing program at Visit
Philly, Philadelphias largest travel and
tourism site.
His group has rolled out a series of
new online advertisements to promote
gay tourism for couples looking to get
married. Brotherly or sisterly, love is
love, the ad reads, with the hashtag visit
gay Philly at the bottom.
Before [same-sex marriage was
legalized] we could have lost talent, Yelk
said. I know that some people moved
from the state to another state where they
could get married. It was really hindering
us being in the Northeast because every
other state had marriage equality. We
wont have those negative impacts now,
which is a good thing.
The number of same-sex weddings
expected in the state over the next three
years is likely between about 8,000 and
11,000, according to the Williams Institute,
a think tank that conducts research on
LGBT law and public policy.
Same-sex marriage could generate
between $65 and $92.1 million for the
state over the next three years, the
Williams Institute estimates. Marriage
could contribute $4.2 to $5.8 million in
sales tax revenue not to mention the
creation of about 1,000 local jobs.
But for New Hope, a region known for
its vibrant LGBT community, the economic
benets of gay tourism have been around
long before same-sex marriage became a
legal institution.
LGBT tourism in not an unknown
commodity, said Daniel Brooks, founder
of New Hope Celebrates, an LGBT
tourism agency, noting that many same-
sex couples have historically traveled to
the New Hope area for honeymoons. But
the focus will now shift because people
can get married and honeymoon.
Brooks, who also owns The Wishing
Well Guesthouse, a small inn in New
Hope, said hes looking forward to hosting
weddings there, and expects the number
of requests to increase. He said that in
his experience, same-sex couples looking
to get married tend to prefer small,
intimate events.
New Hope is perfect for same-sex
weddings, he said. Its just a bunch of
small places. There are no huge hotels
just bed and breakfasts.
Haggerty said her ower shop has seen
increased business from engaged gay
and lesbian couples since neighboring
New Jersey legalized same-sex marriage
in October 2013.
Hoping for a business boom in New Hope
Same-sex marriage is
not going to change that
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
Two bills that would ban anti-LGBT
discrimination in Pennsylvania continue to
face an uphill battle despite the legalization
of same-sex marriage in the state.
State Rep. Daryl Metcalfe (R-Butler
County) has refused to allow debate
on House Bill 300 in the House State
Government Committee that he chairs
since state Rep. Dan Frankel (D-Allegheny
County) introduced it last August. The
measure and an identical bill that state
Sen. Patrick Browne (D-Lehigh County)
introduced in the Pennsylvania Senate
have more than 100 co-sponsors.
Ted Martin, executive director
of Equality Pennsylvania, told the
Washington Blade on Tuesday he feels
Gov. Tom Corbetts announcement late
last year that he supports the measure is
denitely a good thing. Martin further
stressed same-sex marriage in the
commonwealth will have little impact on
Metcalfes opposition to HB 300.
He was always very adamant that
the bill would never come out of his
committee, said Martin. The marriage
issue is not going to change that.
Martin told the Blade he is thrilled
the state now recognizes his California
marriage. He stressed his organizations
response to the extension of marriage rights
to gays and lesbians in the commonwealth
has been kind of tempered because of the
lack of statewide discrimination protections
for LGBT Pennsylvanians.
I have to remind people that you can
still get red, said Martin. You can face
termination or eviction in most parts of
the state.
Sue Kerr, editor of Pittsburgh Lesbian
Correspondents, made a similar point.
She told the Blade on Tuesday that a
woman who lives in Metcalfes district
north of Pittsburgh sent her a picture of an
anti-gay marriage sign hanging outside a
local church that read just because sin is
legal doesnt mean its okay. Kerr said she
has also spoken with dozens of people
since U.S. District Judge John E. Jones, III,
on May 20 struck down Pennsylvanias
statutory same-sex marriage ban who
dont understand how it all works.
Theres a sense of urgency to get
married, even though they are risking
their jobs or their housing, she said.
Im afraid people are going to make
uninformed decisions.
Pennsylvania is among the 19 states
and D.C. in which same-sex couples
can now legally marry after Corbett
announced last week he will not appeal
Jones ruling.
Neighboring Maryland, Delaware,
New Jersey and New York are among
the 21 states, the nations capital and
Puerto Rico that have banned anti-gay
discrimination in employment, housing
and public accommodation. Delaware
and New Jersey also ban discrimination
based on gender identity and expression.
Maryland Gov. Martin OMalley earlier
this month signed a transgender rights
bill into law that could face a referendum
in November.
Philadelphia and 31 other Pennsylvania
municipalities have enacted anti-
discrimination laws that include both
sexual orientation and gender identity
and expression. A poll that Susquehanna
Polling and Research conducted last May
found 72 percent of Pennsylvanians back
the two anti-LGBT discrimination bills.
Martin told the Blade he feels the
attention surrounding same-sex marriage
will help Pennsylvanians understand
how we treat LGBT people in the state
in general, which is not good.
Equality Pennsylvania has been ghting
for non-discrimination for a long time,
along with marriage equality, he said. We
never expected to get it in this way.
Metcalfe did not respond to the Blades
request for comment.

Activist visits D.C., recounts
horrifying abuse back home
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
Angeline Jackson, executive director
of Quality of Citizenship Jamaica, an
organization that advocates on behalf
of lesbian and bisexual women and
transgender Jamaicans, was walking with
a friend in a town outside of Kingston, the
countrys capital, in 2009 when two men
robbed them.
Jackson, now 24, said during a Capitol
Hill reception on May 21 that U.S. Reps.
David Cicilline (D-R.I.) and Ileana Ros-
Lehtinen (R-Fla.) attended, that the two
men who were stepbrothers forced her
to perform oral sex on them at gunpoint.
The two men raped Jacksons friend
before bringing them to one of their
mothers homes two hours later.
Two female police o cers came to
Jacksons home after she told her mother
about the alleged incident. She said one
of them told her that she should leave
this lifestyle and go back to church.
I looked at her, said Jackson as she
spoke during the Capitol Hill reception. I
was like, you mean the same night that
this has just happened to me this is the
response that you give me as an o cer
of the law.
Jackson, who co-founded Quality of
Citizenship Jamaica in January 2013
alongside Jalna Broderick, met with New
York Congresswoman Yvette Clark and
o cials with the U.S. State Department
while in D.C. last week. She also spoke
with the Washington Blade on May 21 at
the o ces of Human Rights First.
The quality of citizenship of LGBT
people needs to be at the same standard
as heterosexuals so that within the
country everybody can be moving
forward, said Jackson.
A report from the Jamaica Forum for
Lesbians All-Sexuals and Gays (J-FLAG)
says the organization knows of at least
30 gay men who have been murdered
on the island between 1997 and 2004.
These include J-FLAG co-founder Brian
Williamson who was stabbed to death
inside his Kingston home in 2004.
The murder of Dwayne Jones last
July near Montego Bay after a group of
partygoers stabbed him to death after
they realized the teenager was cross-
dressing sparked global outrage.
Jackson noted to the Blade that gay
men and butch women are more likely
to experience physical violence, in part,
because of the way she said Jamaican society
views male homosexuality. She said sexual
violence is more likely to be perpetrated
against feminine LGBT women.
A male being gay means that
somebodys making themselves a
woman, said Jackson. Youre making
yourself a girl; youre making yourself
less than and so the way the male
relationships are looked at is dierent
than female relationships.
Our culture is this melting pot of
religion, culture, music and misogyny,
she added. All four of them just
combine to give us this unique Jamaican
homophobia.
Jamaica has one of the worlds highest
rates of sexual violence with a third of
women reporting they have been raped.
Quality of Citizenship Jamaica last
year conducted the rst survey of LGBT
Jamaicans designed to collect information
about education, health care and other
basic needs. Jackson said her organization
is also trying to determine any possible
connection between sexual violence
and the sexual orientation of those who
experience it.
We know because of that, it must mean
that the same thing is happening within
the LB (lesbian, bisexual) community,
Jackson told the Blade. We just dont
know what it is. Were trying to ascertain
what that gure is.
Jackson said anti-LGBT harassment
particularly against those who live in
lower-income areas of Kingston where
Quality of Citizenship Jamaica is based
remains pervasive.
She noted to the Blade a group of
people stoned a lesbian couple. Jackson
discussed another reported incident
during which a man who saw a lesbian
couple walking to their respective homes
in Kingston called them a sodomite and
asked them whether it was a good man
you want or a good cock you want to
change you.
She said she receives certain looks if
her hair is cut too low or she dresses in
a certain way. Jackson added she has
also gotten the stares and questions
about whether she is a lesbian or a
sodomite or a boy when she wears a
large T-shirt or cuts her hair short.
Im usually more of the in-between
look that people cant gure out whether
Im butch or femme, she said. They kind
of leave me alone.

Jamaicas unique brand of homophobia
Santos speaks out ahead
of presidential election
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos
last week publicly indicated his support of
marriage rights for same-sex couples.
Marriage between homosexuals to me
is perfectly acceptable and whats more I
am defending unions that exist between
two people of the same sex with the
rights and all of the same privileges that
this union should receive, said Santos
during a Google hangout the Colombian
newspaper El Tiempo hosted on May 20.
If these unions are called marriage or not
is secondary to me. For me it is important
that they have their rights.
Santos comments came during the nal
days of the campaign ahead of the rst
round of the South American countrys
presidential election that took place on
Sunday. They are also consistent with the
Colombian Constitutional Courts 2011
ruling that said same-sex couples could
legally register their relationships in two
years if lawmakers did not pass a bill that
would extend to them the same benets
heterosexuals receive through marriage.
This government and is also my
personal conviction supports the
decisions of the Constitutional Court
in terms of inheritance rights and
recognition of lesbian, gay, bisexual,
transgender and intersex people, said
Santos in a candidate questionnaire that
Colombia Diversa, a Colombian LGBT
advocacy group, published on May 15.
We are and will be respectful of the
judicial rulings and the independence of
the branches of public power.
In this sense, we will work towards
respecting the Constitutional Courts
rulings, added the Colombian president.
It is important that these rulings are
known and apply to all agents of the
states and citizens so that they are
respected without prejudices.
Two of Santos challengers Clara
Lpez of the Alternative Democratic
Pole party and Enrique Pealosa of the
Green Alliance had previously backed
marriage rights for same-sex couples.
Santos will face former Finance Minister
scar Ivn Zuluaga who opposes
nuptials for gays and lesbians in a June
15 runo.
I respect the sexual inclination of
people and their privacy, but I do not
agree with marriage between partners of
the same sex, nor adoption, said Zuluaga
in the Colombia Diversa questionnaire.
I agree that you should have a legal
framework that respects inheritance
rights, civil rights and social security for
same-sex partners.
The Colombian Senate in April 2013
overwhelmingly rejected a measure that
would have allowed gays and lesbians to
tie the knot.
A handful of same-sex couples in
Bogot, the Colombian capital, and other
cities have exchanged vows since the
Constitutional Courts deadline passed
last June. Inspector General Alejandro
Ordez Maldonado has challenged the
rulings that allowed them to marry.
The Impact Litigation Project at
American University Washington College
of Law and the New York City Bar
Association last month led briefs with
the Constitutional Court in a case brought
by two gay couples challenging Ordezs
eorts to nullify their marriages.
Colombia Diversa and other Colombian
LGBT advocacy groups and activists have
been critical of Santos administration for
what they maintain is its silence during
the same-sex marriage debate.
Dr. Zayuri Tibaduiza, an advisor to
Colombian Vice President Angelino
Garzn, told the Washington Blade
last May during an interview in Bogot
the government respects both the
Constitutional Courts ruling and the
Senates vote against the same-sex
marriage bill.

take place at Stonewall Inn on Friday,
but she had limited information on the
planned study that will be announced.
They do eld studies for dierent
groups, and theyre starting one for the
LGBT community, Phalan said.
Although the nature of the study wasnt
immediately clear, sources described the
initiative as historic in nature. An Interior
Department o cial said the initiative would
be headed by theNational Park Service and
ensure the agency is telling a complete
story of Americas heritage and history.
In addition to Jewell, New York City o cials
and gay philanthropist Tim Gill, known for
his work in funding eorts in the marriage
equality movement, are scheduled to attend
the kicko for the study, two sources familiar
with the event said.
According to an invitation obtained by the
Washington Blade, the announcement will
be made at 11 am. Visit washingtonblade.
com for updated news.
The news of the Stonewall announcement
follows last weeks unveiling of the Harvey
Milk stamp. The cost of the new stamp is
49 cents, but for those who attended a
White House event last Thursday unveiling
the prize for philatelists and LGBT rights
supporters alike, the legacy of the gay
rights pioneer is priceless.
That was the sentiment expressed by
the nine speakers at a two-hour White
House event celebrating Milk, who won
election as a San Francisco Supervisor in
1977, becoming one of the rst openly gay
people in the country to hold public o ce.
Stuart Milk, a gay nephew of Harvey
Milk and president of the Harvey
Milk Foundation, said his uncle never
sought to achieve an honor such as being
on a stamp, but knew the importance his
shattering of a glass ceiling in 1977 would
have for gay people 36 years later.
He did see this day because he
dreamed it, Milk said. Its what gave him
the strength to go into work with death
threats, and to remain loud and remain
with that call that we have to come out.
Anne Kronenberg, co-founder of the
Harvey Milk Foundation, worked on Harvey
Milks campaign for supervisor and said
shes excited that his image would appear
on peoples mail throughout the country.
I nd it a little bit ironic in a wonderful
way that during his campaign, we didnt
have enough money for postage,
Kronenberg said. One beautiful brochure
that we put together, we couldnt get it
out. We relied on our volunteers to get it
out to our constituents.
The U.S. Postal Service made the decision
to mint the Harvey Milk Forever stamp
as a result of a national campaign led
by the San Diego City Commissioner
despite reported opposition from social
conservative groups and some members of
the Citizens Stamp Approval Committee.
The event took place on May 22, 2014,
which would have been Harvey Milks
84th birthday; he was assassinated in
1978 by Dan White, who was acquitted
of murder and instead convicted on
voluntary manslaughter charges.
Although Harvey Milk predicted his own
death, Stuart Milk said his uncle hoped that
event and the later acquittal of White
would pave the way for the judicial system
to grant equality for LGBT people. Such a
vision would be consistent with recent court
rulings striking down same-sex marriage
bans in Oregon and Pennsylvania.
It was a wake-up call, and, I think, today
we can say we heard it, Staurt Milk said.
It was truly Uncle Harveys dream that we
could see a dierent paradigm resulting
from both his assassination and that equally
mean-spirited verdict. He hoped our justice
system could be moved to not only uphold
the rights of LGBT people, but to live free
from violence and scorn, and maybe our
justice system could even uphold the
equality principles for our Constitution.
The highest ranking member of the
Obama administration at the event was
U.S. ambassador to the United Nations
Samantha Power, who drew a connection
between Obama and the legacy
associated with Milk.
I get to work for a president who is
identied with two words: hope and
change, Power said. But it is hard to
think of words that more succinctly
describe Harvey Milk the leader, the
activist, the ghter, the elected o cial.
Hope and change is about a deeply held
and proud American tradition: a tradition
of toil to ensure the triumph of progress;
a tradition of love winning out over fear.
Hope and change.
Gautam Raghavan, the White House
public engagement adviser and LGBT
liaison, acted as uno cial emcee for the
event. He said Milk would have welcomed
the honor bestowed on him given his
belief in being out.
I wish he could have grown old and
seen the legacy of the hope that he
breathed into so many of our lives,
Raghavan said. And I think he would have
liked being a stamp because he knew the
best way to change hearts and minds was
for people to get to know us.
Power also alluded to the
administrations support for passage of
the Employment Non-Discrimination Act
when talking about recent gains for the
LGBT community, including the drafting
of Michael Sam by the St. Louis Rams.
While we now do live in an age where
the National Football League has, for the
rst time, drafted an openly gay man,
we still live in an age where the National
Football League can re him for being
gay, Power said. Postage stamps will not
change that. Legislation will.
Other speakers at the event included
Evan Low, a gay city council member
from Campbell, Calif.; Ronald Stroman,
deputy postmaster general; and Torey
Carter, chief operating o cer for the Gay
& Lesbian Victory Institute.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi
(D-Calif.) repeated her often-told
narrative of the legislative process for
repeal of Dont Ask, Dont Tell, giving
Obama credit for making it happen, but
also remembered the death of Milk in
1978 before she was elected to Congress.
I was thinking that day, Is this how it
ends? It this how it ends? Pelosi said.
But it really was the beginning, a sad
sacrice to pay, but it was the beginning
of so much. And you all know what it is. I
dont need to elaborate.
Pelosi said that Milk continues to be
honored 36 years after his death because
he believed in the fundamental American
value of equality and cared about the
rights of everyone.
Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), a black civil
rights leader in the 1960s and one of
the lawmakers who voted against the
Defense of Marriage Act in 1996, said
Milks ght and the ght for racial equality
are one and the same.
The activism for Harvey Milk came
of age during the last social revolution
in American history, Lewis said. It was
a revolution of values and ideas that
started in 1955 in the American South and
gave rise to other movements in America.
Good trouble, necessary trouble, thats
what Harvey Milk got involved in.
Lesbian Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.)
attributed her success at being elected
to the House in the 1990s and becoming
the rst openly gay person elected to the
Senate to the election of Harvey Milk.
Its incredible to look at a time when
running for San Francisco supervisor as an
openly gay man seemed like a revolutionary
act, Baldwin said. Harvey knew that. He
welcomed the attention. He weathered the
insults. He shoved o the death threats.
And it wasnt to satisfy his own ambition,
but rather to answer the call he felt to move
the cause of equality forward.
Saying more work needs to be done
on civil rights, Baldwin also recalled the
controversy over the Sam kiss upon
his entry into the NFL, saying we heard
the peanut gallery of conservatives
complain about how theyre supposed to
explain that to their nine-year-olds.
We live in country where most nine-
year-olds could probably explain that kiss
to their parents without batting an eye,
Baldwin said. They understand what
love is. They understand what fairness
is. America is ready to take more steps
forward, but its going to take more acts
of courage and conviction, like the ones
that made Harvey Milk a hero.
A signicant portion of the event was
dedicated to international LGBT rights as
an emerging issue.
Power noted that progress has been
made on the international stage, such as
by passage of a U.N. resolution in support
of LGBT rights, but other countries have
fallen backward.
Hope is about envisioning a world
where leaders do not target their
most vulnerable citizens with laws that
criminalize their existence, as is true,
now, in 76 countries around the world,
including Nigeria and Uganda, where
new legislation, further targeting LGBT
individuals, was signed into law earlier
this year, Power said. Change is about
standing up to them when they do. And
under President Obama we have.
Stuart Milk also acknowledged relationships
between gay people are still criminalized
under law in one-sixth of the world.
Their very existence is now illegal just
because of who they love, just because of
who they are, Milk said. We cannot allow
the backwards march in Asia, in Africa
and Eastern Europe. We cant allow it.
Among the estimated 150 people
attendees seated at the event were gay Rep.
Mark Pocan (D-Wis.); gay Rep. Mark Takano
(D-Calif.); Democratic National Committee
chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz; National
Gay & Lesbian Task Force Executive Director
Rea Carey; gay businessperson Mitchell
Gold and gay New Hampshire Democratic
Party Chair Ray Buckley.
Obama did not attend. At the same
time the ceremony was taking place,
Obama was speaking at an event at
the National Baseball Hall of Fame and
Museum in Cooperstown, N.Y.

Frederick Pride to
change locations
The Frederick LGBTQ Community
Center will host its third annual Frederick
Pride on June 28 from noon-6 p.m. at
Carroll Creek Park in Frederick near the
downtown area. This is a new venue
for the event, which will be held rain or
shine. It is free, handicap accessible and
kid friendly.
Weve listened to the community
by moving to the heart of downtown
Frederick, increased the variety and
quality of food, added beer and wine,
plus expanded the number of live
LGBTQ musical performances, and this
year anticipated over 1,000 attendees,
Brian Walker, one of Prides organizers,
told the Blade.
Frederick Pride will include: ASL
interpreting through a donation from
dancinghandsasl.com; fenced beer
and wine tent (no BYOB per city law);
booths oering information, products,
and services; music, speakers, and
entertainment on stage; free Buy Pride
bracelets good for discounts at area
businesses; and parking will be available
in ve downtown garages.
New this year at 11a.m., just prior to the
festival, will be a Pride Interfaith Worship
Service with guest speaker Rev. Frank
Schaefer, the former Pennsylvania United
Methodist pastor that was defrocked
after presiding at the same-sex wedding
ceremony of his gay son. It will take place
at Grace UCC, 25 East 2nd Street, just a
few blocks from Pride.
Pride celebrations are not only for
large metropolitan areas anymore,
they have moved on to the smaller
towns in America, said Scott Gould who
lives in D.C. Frederick Pride has all of
the spirit and ties to the history of gay
rights that the larger celebrations in
D.C. and Baltimore have, but it has the
hometown feel and friendly vibe you get
in a smaller town.
Ride for the Feast
a success
The annual two-day, 140-mile bike ride
from Ocean City to Baltimore on May 10-
11 was a nancial success, organizers said.
The event is a fundraiser for Moveable
Feast, a Baltimore-based non-prot that
provides lifesaving, nutritious foods for
low-income Marylanders living with HIV/
AIDS, cancer and other life-threatening
conditions at no cost.
According to Thomas Bonderenko of
Moveable Feast, the Ride was helped
out by 185 volunteers, 262 riders, and
thousands of donors. The monetary
goal was exceeded by raising more than
$650,000.
Thats enough to feed 433 critically ill
neighbors for an entire year, Bonderenko
stated in an email to supporters.
Serving 14 Maryland counties, in 2013,
Moveable Feast delivered 702,083 meals
to homes, shelters and drop-in centers,
serving a total of 3,637 Marylanders. For
more information on Moveable Feast,

Study nds changes in brains of gay dads
NEW YORK Having a baby alters new mothers brain activity, researchers have
found, and a new study adds the rst evidence of such changes in the brains of gay men
raising children they adopted through surrogacy, the Bangor Daily News, Time, Reuters
and several other news outlets report.
The mens pattern of brain activity resembles that of both new mothers and new
fathers in the study, the article said. The research, reported on Monday, could feed
into the debate over whether gay men should be allowed to adopt children. Many U.S.
adoption agencies will not work with same-sex couples, and some states prohibit them
from adopting.
The current study, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences,
was conducted in Israel, and builds on work by neuropsychologist Ruth Feldman of Bar-
Ilan University and others, who showed that the brains of new mothers become hyper-
reactive to their childs cries and other emotional cues, the Daily News reports. It was
not clear if that pattern is a result of the hormonal and other changes that accompany
pregnancy or a response to the experience of motherhood.
To nd out, Feldman and her colleagues videotaped 89 new mothers and fathers
interacting with their infants at home. They then measured the parents brain activity
while watching the videos in an MRI tube, and again (to establish a baseline) while
watching videos that their kids did not star in, the Daily News said.
In the 20 mothers in the study, all primary caregivers, watching their babies triggered
heightened activity in the brains emotion-processing regions, particularly in a structure
called the amygdala, which was ve times more active than at baseline.
These are regions that respond unconsciously to signs of an infants needs, and that
derive deep emotional reward from seeing the baby, Feldman was quoted as having
said in the Bangor Daily News.
Rochester to cover transgender services
ROCHESTER, N.Y. The city of Rochester will add transgender health care benets for
employees and their families starting on Jan. 1, 2015, the Rochester City Newspaper reports.
The new coverage means that services related to gender reassignment procedures
such as medical and psychological counseling, hormone therapy and reconstructive
surgeries will be covered by insurance. To receive the benets, employees will have to
purchase an enhanced coverage plan, the paper said.
The City of San Francisco has oered the benets since 2001and studies show that
about 3 percent of the citys employees use them.
CDC launches new HIV campaign
WASHINGTON The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last week
launched a new campaign called Start Talking. Stop HIV. that encourages gay and
bi men to talk with their sexual partners about HIV risk and prevention strategies.
Although research suggests that open communication leads to behaviors that
can help reduce risk, such as HIV testing and status disclosure, studies have found
that important discussions about HIV do not occur within many relationships.
Given the range of HIV prevention options available today, talking about HIV
prevention has never been more important for gay and bisexual men, said Dr.
Jonathan Mermin, director of CDCs National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD
and TB Prevention. Only after having open and honest conversations can partners
make informed choices about which strategies will work for them. Start Talking. Stop
HIV. urges gay and bisexual men to break the silence and take control of their health.
Men who have sex with men (MSM) including those who inject drugs
continue to be the group most severely aected by HIV in the United States,
accounting for more than half (57 percent) of the 1.1 million people living with HIV
and approximately two-thirds (66 percent) of all new HIV infections each year. Young
(ages 13-24) MSM, especially young black MSM, are at particularly high risk for HIV.
Despite this heavy burden, a recent CDC study of gay and bisexual men in 20 cities
found that 37 percent did not know the HIV status of their last male partner.
The Start Talking. Stop HIV. campaign website features information and
resources as well as practical tips for starting conversations about safe sex and
HIV. The campaign will also be featured at Pride events and other community
activities across the country.
This image is one of several
used in a new campaign
targeting HIV in MSM.

Four exercises to help you
get a summer six pack
With warm weather comes an instant
reminder to us all that summer is near.
Before you know it, itll be time to peel
away the button ups and start unveiling
that bikini and boy shorts body you have
been working hard on.
No matter how in shape you are, it
seems as if the hardest area people
struggle with is the glorious and many
times stubborn mid section. Lets face it
we all want a six pack, or an eight pack
for my D.C. overachievers. I constantly
see people with at stomachs or the
infamous two pack, who havent been
able to achieve that ripped, six-pack
look. Today Ill tell you four of my secret
exercises I use to really get you the
midsection you want and not the one that
you just settle for.
Add on the resistance. That two pack
or four pack may have been OK for the
winter, but its time to really attack that
core and build some major muscle so
that your abdominal muscles can show.
Many times people dont have the six
pack showing because they frankly dont
have enough muscle there. Solution, add
more resistance to your core workouts.
Face it honey, gravity alone aint doing it,
look at yourself. That comes from a place
of love. Dont be afraid to bump it up with
a heavier medicine ball, more weight on
the cable or using a stronger band. Here
are three resistance exercises I love to
use to get that ripped look.
1. Plank with cable row. Align yourself in
plank position, on your forearms and toes
with a at back o the ground, facing a low
pulley machine or a band looped around
a stable pole. With an outstretched arm,
take one hand and grab the pulley or band
handle and pull the handle in toward your
body while keeping your body parallel to
the ground. Repeat for 12 reps then switch
to the other arm. Do this for three-four sets
of 12 reps.
2. Resisted knee to chest. Align yourself
in pushup position, on hands and toes
with a at back o the ground, facing
away from a low pulley or band looped
around a stable pole. Hook one of your
feet in the handle and while maintaining
the body parallel to the ground, raise
your knee toward the chest. Make sure to
hold for one second at the highest point
and then return to the starting position
slowly. Repeat for 12 reps then switch to
the other leg. Do this for three-four sets
of 12 reps. For an even higher intensity,
try to bring your knee across the body to
the opposite elbow.
3. Cable wood chopper. Stand beside a
high pulley with the handle at the highest
point a little above your ears. Reach up
to grab the handle with both hands, then
stand with feet shoulder width apart. In
one motion diagonally chop your arms
across your body toward your opposite
knee while simultaneously squatting.
Slowly return to the starting position
while resisting your upper body from
twisting. Throughout the exercise, try to
keep your belly button facing forward
throughout the movement. Repeat for
three sets of 10-12 reps on each side. You
can also try this move from a low position
to a high position. Remember this takes
lots of coordination so start with light
weights until you have the move down.
4. Medicine ball side plank. While lying
down on your side, place your forearm
directly under your shoulder and feet on
top of each other. Next grab a medicine
ball and place it on the hip closest to
the ceiling. While keeping your body
perpendicular to the oor, raise your hips
up as high as possible then slowly return
close to the oor without touching it.
Repeat for three sets or 12 on each side.
For more of a challenge, try lifting the top
leg while performing the dip.
As we get ready to reveal our
washboard abs this summer, remember
that adding resistance exercises to your
normal core workout will help build the
muscle you need to look erce and feel
your best. As always, slow progression
is the best way to safely and eectively
get the results you want while avoiding
injury. Start slow now and you will be the
head turner all summer.
It takes strategic planning to achieve a perfect six pack.

Considering the
implications of party
labels in mayors race
Some voters believe that registering as
an independent is a cutting-edge, even
cool thing to do. That made me think
about party labels, what they mean,
and about those who reject party labels
yet may want to vote in the primary of
a party they made a conscious decision
not to join.
I grew up in New York City and like
D.C. most voters were Democrats. Many
had experiences with discrimination and
the Democratic Party was a comfortable
political home. New York was a melting
pot and home to many minority groups.
There were Jews who escaped the Holo-
caust; Irish Americans whose ancestors
escaped the famine; and Cubans who
ed Castro. My parents werent political
but mom was an activist ghting for ev-
erything from planting more trees, inte-
grating schools and stopping Columbia
University from taking over more of the
Morningside Heights neighborhood.
At 12, I joined a local Democratic club.
Being a Democrat meant joining the
party of JFK, Lyndon Johnson and Robert
Kennedy. I was proud to be a member
of the party that supported civil rights,
womens rights and, as I got older and
came out, the party whose platform
evolved to support the rights of the
LGBT community.
Disliking a candidate of my party didnt
lead me to become a Republican or an
independent but rather inspired me to
join with others in the party to push for
change. We fought to elect progressive
Bill Ryan (D-N.Y.) to Congress. We sup-
ported Hubert Humphrey in 1968 and
George McGovern in 1972. Though we
lost the presidency, we continued to ght
for the principles we believed in within
the party. We had an intra-party ght that
resulted in Bella S. Abzug (D-N.Y.) being
the Democratic candidate for Congress
after Bill Ryan died. Through the years,
the party I choose has been more in tune
with my beliefs than any other.
So its perplexing that mayoral candi-
date David Catania, who is smart and an
independent, found that the Republican
Party matched his principles for all the
years it did. He moved to D.C. in 1986
for college and for the next 16 years un-
til 2002, when he was already an elected
o cial, proudly called himself a Republi-
can even supporting and contributing to
George W. Bushs presidential campaign.
He left his party and registered as an in-
dependent only when it became clear
the GOP didnt support gay rights and
actually worked to make things worse for
the LGBT community. I gured that was
for personal expediency to keep his seat
on the Council not realizing until recently
that it was more than that when he was
quoted in the Washington Post saying,
The Republican Party that I grew up with
disappeared a long time ago. As far as be-
ing an Independent, its a suit that really
ts. I joke that Ive been in one bad mar-
riage and Im not about to jump into an-
other. He needs to explain what princi-
ples the Democratic Party stands for that
were so abhorrent to him as to consider
it would be a bad marriage.
The I label on the ballot means the
person doesnt identify with a particular
party and voters dont necessarily have
an indication what they believe. What
set of political principles do they es-
pouse? What is it about my Democratic
Party they nd objectionable? Is it sup-
port for unions? LGBT civil and human
rights? Public education, womens rights,
choice, equal pay for women, raising the
minimum wage, removing impediments
to voting or working to deal with climate
change? If they agree with all those posi-
tions are they simply afraid to run in a
primary or are they independent simply
for political expediency?
Recently its been suggested that D.C.
voters may be coerced or bullied into vot-
ing Democratic. That is absurd and oen-
sive. People vote for candidates whose
positions they like and who they feel com-
fortable with. When they do consider par-
ty in their decision, its often because it
gives them a window into the candidates
beliefs on issues that may not be part of
the discussion in a particular election but
are still very important to them.
Some ascribe the ethics problems
in D.C. to a particular party. But ethics
problems relate to individual candidates.
Some might consider that George W.
Bush being elected in 2000 caused more
harm to District residents, especially
those with family members in the military
or National Guard, than lying on a mort-
gage application for which one D.C. Coun-
cil member was appropriately indicted
and convicted.
Positions, history and vision are impor-
tant when considering who to vote for
but dont be coerced or bullied into not
considering party a liation when voting.
It is one factor of so many in choosing a
candidate. We have a Democratic presi-
dent and likely will still have a Democratic
Senate in 2015.
During the term of the next mayor we
will very possibly elect the rst woman
president, Democrat Hillary Rodham Clin-
ton. So one additional factor voters might
want to consider in choosing a mayor is
who will have more access to power to
benet the people of the District. Would
it be a former Republican who walked
away from his party to become an inde-
pendent, or a woman who is a proud fth
generation, D.C. Democrat? Just more
food for thought.

Is it cool to be an independent?
Community and business
reaction to city proposal
swift and harsh
It might have seemed like a good idea to
D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray to scheme up a
proposal to hike city fees for outdoor cafs
by $1 million in the dreary days of winter.
But it sure looked silly when the public
caught wind of it last week in the run-up to
the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
When D.C. Council members sat down
at an all-day meeting to review Grays Fis-
cal Year 2015 Budget Support Act, incorpo-
rating Council recommendations, a previ-
ously little-known proposal to more than
double sidewalk caf fees for most busi-
nesses and nearly double them for the re-
maining few dominated public attention.
Dupont Circle eateries on 17th Street
were featured on NBC4 News with re-
porter Tom Sherwood. Hanks Oyster
Bar manager Je Strine and Floriana
Restaurant owner Dino Tapper pointed
out that ever-increasing fees and taxes
were a growing hardship for local estab-
lishments. D.C. Council member Tommy
Wells pledged his opposition to the in-
crease, saying, It really sends a message
to small business that were raising the
fee for the sake of raising the fee.
Mayor Gray wants to increase an-
nual fees by 66 percent although a
companion provision eliminating pro-
rated fees for partial-year seasonal
operation converts it to a much higher
amount for all but about 30 businesses
among hundreds.
Reaction was equally swift and harsh to
an additional element of the legislation.
A D.C. Council committee, chaired by fre-
quent enterprise nemesis Mary Cheh, had
approved a new penalty stipulating that
business owners could face imprisonment
of up to 10 days or a ne of $1,000 for
each day of a regulatory violation.
Local restaurateur and industry ad-
vocate Geo Tracy remarked on social
media, Ill never understand why poli-
ticians keep restaurants perpetually in
the crosshairs.
At-Large Council member David Grosso
not always a friend to local small busi-
nesses but proven when provoked to
possess common-sense reactions to the
most egregious excesses took to Twit-
ter to call the idea of locking up business
owners for regulatory infractions ridicu-
lous. Logan Circle neighborhood advi-
sory chair Matt Raymond sardonically
commented on Facebook, We MUST get
these dangerous sco aws whose side-
walk cafs encroach one inch beyond
their permit o the streets and behind
bars, where they belong!
You could envision neighborhood nay-
sayers rustling around in kitchen draw-
ers for tape measures. Cheh sensibly
demurred, suggesting she was willing to
remove the prison provision.
Grays proposal, along with Chehs
committee, also relinquishes future D.C.
Council control of regulations and fees
instead giving the executive exclusive au-
thority to determine all licensing approv-
als, rules and permit costs. Restaurant
Association Metropolitan Washington
President Kathy Hollinger had earlier writ-
ten to Council members arguing against
investing sole authority with the mayor.
Sidewalk cafs contribute greatly to
the ambiance of our city, create jobs and
provide substantial revenuesthrough
sales and employment taxes, Hollinger
wrote. In addition, sidewalk cafs con-
tribute to public safety, by encouraging
eyes on the street, a known inhibitor of
criminal activity. Given these important
contributions the rental rates paid for
the use of public space for cafs should
be part of larger policy discussions before
the full Council ...
D.C. Council Chair Phil Mendelson,
however, astonishingly revealed he
thought the proposed fees werent set
high enough.
David Garber, a neighborhood advisory
commissioner in the rapidly developing
Navy Yard area where residents gleefully
cheer the opening of each new outdoor
dining and drinking space, oered a suc-
cinct retort. D.C. already has a reputa-
tion for being a di cult and costly place
to start and run a business. When busi-
nesses and entrepreneurs are consider-
ing where to open, grow, and succeed, I
hope that in the future our reputation is
a little more friendly than it is today. Pro-
posed fee increases like this wont bring
us there, and will ultimately cost us more
than we hope to earn.
D.C. Council budget deliberations get
underway this week. As quick as an egg
fries up on a hot summer sidewalk, the
Council should reject these proposals.
Old Lesbridge Village
would tell our stories
to new generation
In Flirting with Disaster, Ben Stiller plays
Mel, on a cross-country quest to nd his
biological mother. Early on, Mel describes
his loathing for bed and breakfasts. After
a series of mini-disasters, he, his wife and
small child are forced to spend the night in
a funky B&B. The scene with him sneaking
down at night to use the o-limits kitchen
phone is hilarious, probably funnier be-
cause of my complete identication.
In my years on the road in the early
1980s, producers would put me up in
community housing. In one back-to-the-
womans-land experience, we were wel-
comed by our hosts free-range goats. The
darling little billies somehow managed to
get on top of our red van, named Ruby,
as in fruit, and stomped in the sun-roof.
One November in Madison, producers
put us up in the house of a woman who
was away on a three-month trip. She has
a waterbed, they told us invitingly. They
did not mention where the beds water
heater was, and I am convinced that is
when the arthritis in my hip started.
After a few changes to the rider in my
performance contract, I was upgraded to
local B&Bs. I never heard the recitation of
house rules because the overly pillowed
beds were deafening. I could not concen-
trate on the lovingly told history of the
house because I just wanted to get to my
room. I am hostile before morning coee
despite the conviviality of fresh-baked
scones. At one excruciating breakfast,
overlooking beautiful Half Moon Bay, as
a giant grandfather clock solemnly ticked
out the time, the owner and his wife told
me the sad story of their gay sons suicide.
This is not to disrespect B&B owners. I
know and admire many in Provincetown.
After a season or two, a couples early-
retirement dream of owning a B&B in
Ptown hits the reality of the drudgery. Re-
lationships suer and they have no time
for innkeeper support groups. Instead
of breaking up, they sell. Several B&Bs
in Ptown have been converted back to
private homes. One owner of a former
B&B says he still gets late night knocks
on his front door. The women innkeepers
of Ptown are an admirably resilient lot.
In addition to running their businesses
they have sponsored Womens Week, cel-
ebrates its 30th anniversary in October.
When Im on the road, I really dont need
anything fancy. I am ne with the anonym-
ity of a new, clean, chain hotel as long as it is
not in a food desert, has accessible wi and
a workable remote. But like Mel, despite my
ironclad anti-B&B rule, I recently stayed in
a B&B in Western Mass. I might have to re-
visit my own rule book.
Over an artisanal tea, a woman told
me great stories about being raised in a
lesbian-feminist separatist commune in
the late 1970s in northern California. Her
mom was old school and lived the dream
of taking down the patriarchy by ignoring
it. Shed visited her mom recently, and got
her talking about those old days. When
she asked how she self-identied now,
her 76-year-old mom thought about it for
a while and answered, Nostalgic.
This Gay Pride season nds me a bit
nostalgic for the period between 1975-
85 when women proudly and primarily
described themselves as lesbian. I dont
want the history of that period to be lost
or forced into spring, so Im in the plan-
ning stages for a theme park called Old
Lesbridge Village.
Lesbians from that time period will be
able to look for their roots. Visitors will be
able to see what life was like back in the day.
Ive already built a model prototype of the
park with dyke dioramas illustrating inge-
nious feminist governance and infrastruc-
ture. When you visit you can stay in nearby
community housing or former covens con-
v erted into B&Bs. Soon available on AirB&B.

Case Against 8, Love is
Strange among seasons
gay movie releases
By KEITH LORIA
The summer blockbuster movie season
started early this year with lms like The
Amazing Spider-man 2, Neighbors,
Godzilla and X Men: Days of Future
Past already crossing the $100 million
mark by Memorial Day.
But fret not movie fans, there are
plenty of big-budget, action-packed lms
heading your way throughout June, July
and August.
The following is a small sampling of
buzz-worthy lms hitting D.C. screens this
summer.
Following a recent craze of reimagining
Disney characters into live action roles,
Angelina Jolie plays the title character
of Malecent in a new take on
Sleeping Beauty and the glam villainess
antagonist. The lm starts its run today.
Tom Cruise looks to reestablish
his blockbuster cred with Edge of
Tomorrow, a sci- thriller about a soldier
who must relive the same battle day after
day until he nds a way to save the world.
It hits theaters June 6.
Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort star
in The Fault in Our Stars, an adaptation
of John Greens popular young-adult novel
that explores the budding relationship
of a 16-year-old terminal cancer patient
and her newfound love. The romantic
dramedy comes to screens June 6.
Like any summer, sequels are in full-
force and movie enthusiasts can follow
the further adventures of past favorite
characters in lms like 22 Jump Street
(June 13), How To Train Your Dragon
2 (June 13), Transformers: Age of
Extinction (June 27), Dawn of the
Planet of the Apes (July 11), The Purge:
Anarchy (July 18), and The Expendables
3 (Aug. 15).
Two lms that arent getting the
blockbuster treatment, but nevertheless
should be on the radar of the LGBT
community, are The Case Against 8,
coming out Aug. 8, and Love is Strange,
scheduled for release on Aug. 22. Both
have generated positive buzz at lm
festivals around the country.
The Case Against 8 is a documentary
that follows the overturning of Californias
same-sex marriage ban, focusing on Ted
Olson and David Boies, former political
foes who team to champion the rights
of two gay couples. Directed by Ben
Cotner and Ryan White, the documentary
garnered best directing honors for the
pair at Sundance and the lm was the
audience award winner at this years
SXSW Film Festival.
Expected to be screened in a wider
release is Love Is Strange, starring John
Lithgow, Alfred Molina and Oscar winner

How long have you been out and who
was the hardest person to tell?
About 37 years. I came out to only
a few people and then because of my
public involvement in the campus and
community gay and lesbian groups I was
suddenly out to lots of people.
Whos your LGBT hero?
Marshall McClintock, who was co-
founder of Harpur Gay Alliance, a gay
and lesbian group at SUNY Binghamton
in the 1970s. People like Marshall and
there were lots of them scattered across
schools, colleges and communities
were incredibly brave being so visible.

Whats Washingtons best nightspot,

past or present?
The D.C. Eagle in the 1980s. For me,
part of the Eagles charm was that the
leather regulations were not as strictly
adhered to, as say the leather bars in
New York. A lot of people were afraid
to even walk into the D.C. Eagle, but
it was actually more welcoming than
one would have expected. In the 1980s
there was a certain sense of community
among the regulars at the Eagle.

Describe your dream wedding.

Something small and private with just
my closest friends.

What non-LGBT issue are you most

passionate about?
Id like to say environmental issues, which
I feel really passionate about. But lately Ive
devoted more of my time and energy to the
issue of diet, health and tness. I think so
much of our health problems are rooted in
our behavior and diet.

What historical outcome would you change?

A non-buttery ballot in the Palm
Beach County 2000 election would it
have changed enough votes to change the
outcome of the 2000 presidential election?
And perhaps something in pop culture
that would have made condoms cool,
smart or sexy in the 80s. Imagine how
dierent the decade would have been.

Whats been the most memorable pop

culture moment of your lifetime?
The invention of the Internet. Our
immediate connection to information
and each other has certainly changed
our behavior.

On what do you insist?

That I keep my sense of humor.

What was your last Facebook post or Tweet?

Pictures of the Heroes Gala.

If your life were a book, what would

the title be?
Why Does Everything I Say Sound Like
the Last Line of a Limerick?

If science discovered a way to change

sexual orientation, what would you do?
Avoid it.

What do you believe in

beyond the physical world?
Something, but not sure what it is. Surely
not the cloud kingdom in sky depicted in
so much of popular culture. I wonder how
Tom of Finland would illustrate an afterlife.

Whats your advice for LGBT

movement leaders?
Appeal to peoples better nature. I think
our recent political, judicial and social
successes have been achieved through
the general publics sense of fairness and
justice. The screaming and name-calling are
emotionally satisfying at least for me
but I dont think it convinces that movable
middle in voting booths and church pews
of the justness of our basic rights.

What would you walk across hot coals for?

A three-way with George Clooney and
Brad Pitt.

What LGBT stereotype annoys you most?

I kind of like the stereotypes. I think
we have, or at least I have, spent
too much eort trying to avoid the
stereotypical. Though sometimes I think
its performance, I like the people who are
the most comfortable in their skin, the
people who are ready to let their freak y.

Whats your favorite LGBT movie?

The Hanging Garden. It touches on the
themes of uncovering truths, forgiveness,
redemption and second chances.

Whats the most overrated social custom?

Overrated? Right or wrong, I dont
think a lot of people value most social
customs any more.

What trophy or prize do you most covet?

The Michael Olivieri Award, the
Defenders national service award, which
was given largely for my work with
Brother Help Thyself.

What do you wish youd known at 18?

At 18, I was scared of everything,
especially of being gay. Probably like most
LGBT teenagers in 1972, I felt like I was
the only one. The possibility of anything
like a gay community was unimaginable
to me in 1972. I wish I had known there
would be a community for me in the
future that there would be groups like
Dignity and the Defenders who would be
there to console in times of sorrow and to
celebrate in times of joy.
Why Washington?
Thirty-four years ago I moved to the
Washington area for a job one I wasnt
entirely sure I was going to like. Three
years later, when I considered moving
elsewhere, I realized that I was home. Id
made too many friends and connections
to consider leaving the D.C. area.

Tom Yates says the Capital Pride Heroes Reception where he was honored
last week felt somewhat surreal.
I sort of felt like a bride, he says. Every time I stopped to try to eat a bite or
something, someone was coming over to talk or asking me for a photo. I felt like
a celebrity for the evening, which is a very odd feeling for an introvert like me.
Yates, a charter member and current president of Defenders LLC, a local
leather/Levi group, is a longtime board member and volunteer with Dignity/
Washington and DignityUSA, an LGBT Catholic group, and also worked many
years with Brother Help Thyself, where he was vice president for one year
starting in about 1999, then president for seven years after.
I guess Ive done a little of everything, says the 60-year-old Liverpool, N.Y.,
native, whos been in D.C. 34 years. Its always attering to be honored.
Yates works as a civilian mathematician with the U.S. Navy. Hes been in
a 15-year relationship with Jim Hyde and lives in Silver Spring. Yates enjoys

Long-but-rich Judas
is bold, provocative
By PATRICK FOLLIARD
Judas Iscariot: a name synonymous
with betrayal.
Judas, of course, was the disciple who
sold out Christ for 30 pieces of silver.
Whether he did it for the cash or because
he wanted to set o a rebellion against
the occupying Roman army is debatable.
Either way, hes never been a popular guy.
In Stephen Adly Guirgis darkly comic
The Last Days of Judas Iscariot (now
at Forum Theatre), the follower-turned-
traitors motives, character and possibilities
of redemption are all put on trial. Set in
a corner of purgatory called Hope, the
proceedings are presided over by bigoted
Judge Littleeld (Brian Hemmingsen)
assisted by his callow baili (Thony
Mena). The action pits tough and sexy
Fabiana Aziza Cunningham (Julie Garner),
a non-believing defense attorney whos
arguing that gods mercy mandates her
clients release from eternal damnation,
against oily prosecuting attorney Yusef
El-Fayoumy (Scott McCormick) whom the
judge simply addresses as Mr. El Fajita. The
colorful litany of witnesses a veritable
whos who of Biblical and historical types
include Mary Magdalene (Nora Achrati),
Saint Peter (Eric Porter), a naughty Mother
Teresa (Achrati again), Saint Monica from
the hood (Alina Collins Maldonado) and a
self-satised Sigmund Freud (Jesse Terrill).
Throughout the play, Judas (Maboud
Ebrahimzadeh) lies catatonic center stage
on a raised circular platform. Occasionally
he rouses for ashbacks, showing him
as a young and impetuous idealist on the
playground and later as an embittered
adult at Bathshebas Bar & Grill where a
remorseful and very drunk Judas runs into
Satan: You wanna play the lute, sing Mary-
Chapin Carpenter, thats what heavens for,
warns the Gucci-clad prince of darkness.
You wanna rock? Hells the venue.
At three hours, Judas Iscariot is long,
but never dull. The script is all over the
place moving from corny exchanges to
raw humor to darker places. Fortunately
the superb and diverse cast of local actors
is more than up for it. Boldly staged by
Vreeke, whos gay, this production is
a reprise of Forums fantastic Judas
Iscariot from six years ago that was
mounted at the now-shuttered H Street
Playhouse. This time around, the venue
has changed Forums home at Round
House Silver Springs large and chilly black
box space (take a sweater) but the
production remains equally compelling.
Along with talented director Vreeke,
many of the productions original cast
returned. Patrick Bussink makes a
memorable cameo as a casual and quiet
Jesus of Nazareth. Again, Jim Jorgensen
plays Satan happily hung over and
deliciously evil. Frank Britton is back too as
a badass, street smart Pontius Pilate who
refuses to take the blame for just doing
his job. (Britton was robbed and beaten
by four men near the Silver Spring Metro
Station after Monday nights opening. Hes
expected to return to the part soon.)
As with Guirgis other plays like Our
Lady of 121st Street, Jesus Hopped the
A Train and The Motherfucker with the
Hat, Judas Iscariot plumbs meaning
from losers lives and gives a spot-on
portraiture of urban street life. The
humor is irreverent and the characters
are delightfully foulmouthed. Yet, the
works deeper meaning is never lost.
There are quiet, moving moments too: the
show opens with Judas sorrowful mother
Henrietta (Annie Houston) recounting
how she buried her son alone. Later Butch
Honeywell (Frank B. Moorman), a Joe Six-
pack with a bent for poetry, mourns not
having been the husband and father he
might have been. Like Judas Iscariot, his
sadness comes from not being able to
change whats already been done.

New dessert-and-cocktails
concept a great idea, but
needs ne tuning
By JONATHAN HOWARD
Red Light Cocktail and Dessert Bar
(1401 R St. N.W.) opened in April in the
space previously occupied by Bar di Bari,
a wine bar concept that failed over the
winter. The same group that created Bar
di Bari created the new concept: partners
Aaron Gordon, Robert Underwood and
brothers Ari and Micah Wilder.
The name, an homage to 14th Streets
less-than-pure past, is a bold choice, as
is the concept of serving mainly desserts
and adult beverages. Boozy desserts,
handcrafted cocktails, champagne and
chocolate will be the majority of the
menu which will be served Monday-
Friday starting at 4 p.m. and Saturday
and Sunday starting at noon with a happy
hour every day from 4-7 p.m.
My rst trip to Red Light was for the
sole purpose of enjoying a couple happy
hour drinks with a friend, a simple night
consisting of beverages and light banter.
While I appreciate happy hour service
that is somewhat laid back, a great way
to relax, I do also like to be served my
rst drink within the rst 15 minutes of
sitting down. My subsequent visits were
intended to explore the menu as well
as see if the inadequate service would
improve. While the wait sta seemed
informed and energetic, they also seemed
overwhelmed and the overall service was
lackluster on all occasions.
Once your waiter arrives and you have
your menu, you notice that there are
plenty of specialty drinks to choose from
with rare or creative ingredients shaken
and stirred into most concoctions. Aperol,
Winter Fruit, Old Overholt Rye, Rose
Bitters, Darjeeling black tea, Absinthe,
Star Anise, Peychaulds Bitters, Mole
Cacao Bitters, Stone Fruit Nectar, Cotton
Candy and much more all appear on the
cocktail menu.
I tried a drink called the Street Corner
Girl since I was sitting on a street corner
at an establishment called Red Light. This
fresh concoction was my favorite there
with the rum, coconut liqueur, pineapple
and champagne created a nice summer
spritzer. Another well thought-out and
tasty drink was the Cobblestone, which
consisted of bourbon, apricot liqueur,
mint and peach served in a copper mug.
The Mexican Stando, under the slushy
section of the drink menu, was a poorly
balanced drink with the cayenne pepper
not only overpowering the mango nectar,
but the entire drink entirely masking all
other avors. The Mad Men was also
a one-dimensional drink that despite
gin, grapefruit, honey nectar and being
lit on re when it is served, still lacked
excitement. On one occasion my white
wine arrived to the table warm and
champagne arrived at.
There are a few bar bites on the
menu as well as a cheese plate, which
I indulged in on my rst visit. Its hard
to upset me when there is cheese, so
I was pleased with the oerings there.
The centerpiece of the menu is still the
dessert, from milk chocolate crumb
cake, to goat cheese custard, donuts
and cookies are all available in one form
or another. The dessert special was a
rhubarb brown betty with a cardamom
crme fraiche gelato. We also split the
Mexican Chocolate tart with cajeta, house
made marshmallow u and cacao nib
Chantilly. The tart was rich and avorful
but dry; but the Chantilly almost made up
for it. The brown betty was a tasty pile of
crumb topping and not much more, but
the gelato also made up for a multitude
of sins with this dish.
Overall, the partners behind Red
Light have a solid idea in place that
could develop into a successful concept
restaurant. After all, as owner Aaron
Gordon says, Who doesnt love delicious
chocolate and champagne? We all love
delicious chocolate and champagne when
the anticipated products are delivered
awlessly. A little more nessing of the
desserts and drinks and some more
attentive service at Red Light will help
them rise above mediocre, a level that will
not survive on 14th Street.

Poet and raconteur
Nickerson delights in
breezy memoir
A little of this and a little of that.
Its the way conversation ows when
youre with a friend. You mosey from
subject to subject, you touch upon a
funny story that leads to another topic
you can both gnaw on before you move
to something totally dierent.
Thats a glue that holds you together.
Its the stu of friendship. And in the
new book Articial Cherry by Billeh
Nickerson, its several points to ponder.
In his travels, poet and spoken word
artist Nickerson has seen it all. More or less.
Hes seen interesting things done with
a glass eye, an object you almost never
hear about unless it has to do with a
certain actress. Hes seen buildings that
have been gentried and remembered
the particular reason why they resonated
so well in his memories, struggling not
to blurt the truth to his unsuspecting
host. Hes been asked peculiar questions
by a doctor in Montreal just before
he fell in love with the possibility of
what a misplaced medical chart could
oer my anatomy. And hes pondered
the usefulness of thumbs (imagine
hitchhiking without them).
His experiences havent all been odd:
while apartment hunting, he noted the dirt
and other objects left behind by previous
tenants. He couldnt ignore something so
poignantly personal, though; something
that shadowed everything in its wake.
And then there was the Pacic
Northwest Elvis Festival, held on the
shores of Okanagan Lake in Canada and
lled with fun and food. More than 20 Elvis
impersonators gathered to entertain fans
of the King. The most impressive thing
about those fans, says Nickerson, was that
they actually cleaned up after themselves.
In this book, Nickerson, whos gay,
pens poems and short essays about
these and other things. He writes about
poetry that he couldnt bear to read
publicly in the days after 9-11 and that
was uncomfortable, even years later. He
wonders what would have happened
if Mary had named Jesus something
else (knowing, surely, that the name of
a Montreal credit union would have to
change, too). And he writes movingly
of his grandfathers dream of running
with dogs, his grandmothers dreams
of dancing, and he hears the music to
accompany both.
Though its brief a little too brief,
actually Articial Cherry contains
plenty: sass, silliness, a bit of the
scandalous, wry observations, irony,
laughs, absurdity, sadness and thought-
provoking observations.
Author Billeh Nickerson has a great
eye for what most people dont notice, in
fact, and his poems bring those things to
light. Theres really no theme to this book
just poems and very short musings on
whatever Nickerson deems t, which gives
it a good browse-ability. No matter where
you jump in, though, the rest of his work
will beg to be read and youll happily oblige.
At well under 100 pages, this book wont
take you long to read, at least the rst time.
Past that, its something youll want to read
again and (maybe) read aloud because
Articial Cherry is the real deal.

Marisa Tomei. Directed by Ira Sachs, the
lm tells the story of an older gay couple
that gets married only to see their lives fall
apart. A festival darling already, critics are
talking about all three leads as possible
major award contenders.
Music lovers will be singing Sherry,
Big Girls Dont Cry and Cant Take My
Eyes O Of You, as the lm version of the
Tony-winning smash Jersey Boys makes
its way to theaters on June 20. Directed
by Clint Eastwood, the lm chronicles the
rise of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons
in all their musical glory.
Other musical biopics hitting the screen
this summer include Jimi: All Is By
My Side, the true story of Jimi Hendrix
starring rapper Andre 3000 in the title
role, and Get On Up, a look at the true
story of the Godfather of Soul starring
Chadwick Bowman (of 42 fame) as the
legendary James Brown. Both lms are
scheduled to be released in late August.
While the summer season is better
known for epic blockbusters, theres
actually a lot to look forward to in terms
of independent lms.
Richard Linklaters ambitious
Boyhood starring Patricia Arquette,
Ellar Coltrane and Ethan Hawke, hits
theaters July 11. Filmed over short periods
from 2002-2013, the movie examines 12
years in the life of a family. At the center
of the story is Mason, who with his sister
Samantha, are taken on an emotional
and transcendent journey through the
years, from childhood to adulthood.
The late Philip Seymour Homan
pops up in two indie lms this summer,
appearing in the just-released Gods
Pocket and the July 25 release, A Most
Wanted Man. The former was directed
by John Slattery and follows a man whose
life spins out of control. Meanwhile, the
latter deals with a tortured and near-
dead half-Chechen, half-Russian man
who heads to the citys Islamic community
looking to reclaim his late Russian fathers
ill-gotten fortune.
They Came Together reunites Paul
Rudd and Amy Poehler with their Wet
Hot American Summer director David
Wainin a rom-com spoof that follows the
love story of a small candy store owner
and the executive of the chain who wants
to buy her out. Love hits and hilarity
ensues. Out June 27.
The lm that caused quite the stir on
Kickstarter last year nally hits theaters
on July 18, when Zach Bras Wish I
Was Here makes use of the money
that was donated. The lm follows Aidan
Bloom, a struggling actor, father and
husband, who at 35 is still trying to nd
himself. A multitude of Bras celebrity
friends play a part, including Donald
Faison, Josh Gad, Pierce Gagnon, Ashley
Greene, Kate Hudson, Joey King, Jim
ParsonsandMandy Patinkin.
The AFI Silver (8633 Colesville Rd., Silver
Spring) has several old movies of LGBT
interest planned throughout the summer
such as My Own Private Idaho (June
7-8), Nine to Five (on June 9, one of
several Jane Fonda lms slated for the
month), the aforementioned Boyhood
(in August) and more. Visit a.com/silver
for details.
Finally, any lover of movies will want
to check out Life Itself, a documentary
based on Roger Eberts best selling 2011
memoir, and directed by Steve James of
Hoop Dreams fame. Expect two thumbs
up when this lm is released on July 11.

Many conditions can
change what you pay in
D.C. property tax
By VALERIE M. BLAKE
If youre like 90 percent of todays
rst-time home buyers, you begin by
searching the Internet, focusing on an
area or price range youre comfortable
with before taking the more serious
steps of interviewing and hiring a buy-
ers agent and beginning the mortgage
pre-approval process.
Whatever type of housing you prefer,
what you pay each month will likely be
determined by the following pieces of
the nancial pie: the price of the home;
your down payment, interest rate and
applicable mortgage insurance; the cost
of property insurance and monthly fees;
and your annual property taxes.
Most of these costs are easy to ascer-
tain, but then you innocently ask your
agent, How much are the property
taxes on this home? She shifts from
foot to foot, shrugs her shoulders and
replies, It depends.
Simply stated, D.C.s Class 1 (residen-
tial and multi-family) annual property tax
rate is 85 cents per $100 of the assessed
value of the home; however, there are
a variety of conditions that can change
what you pay on an annual basis.
First, the assessed value is not what
you or the previous owner paid for the
house, but an amount based on infor-
mation gathered by a group of asses-
sors from the O ce of Taxation and
Revenue. They check public record
information, review building permits,
send out housing questionnaires to new
owners and evaluate responses, drive
through neighborhoods and, at times,
even schedule home visits.
The resulting information is compared
to the current tax values and assess-
ments of neighboring homes that have
similar features. Objectivity can be dif-
cult to achieve, which is why there is a
government-sanctioned appeals process
that a homeowner can follow if he or she
disagrees with the proposed tax assess-
ment received each year.
Heres a rundown of what you could pay
on an annual basis, based on an example
of a property assessed at $500,000.
The mathematical formula used for
a residential or multi-family property
that is not lived in by its owner would be
$500,000 100 x .85 or $4,250 per year.
If you occupy a property you own that
has ve or fewer units, you can apply for a
homestead exemption of $70,200 which,
when approved, is subtracted from the
assessed value, reducing your payment
by roughly $597 to $3,653 annually.
If you are disabled, or are a senior
citizen, dened for this purpose as over
65, you may be eligible for an additional
50 percent reduction (to approximately
$1,827), provided that you still occupy the
home and that the total adjusted gross
income of everyone living there was less
than $125,000 during the prior tax year.
Dont want to pay property taxes?
Check to see if you qualify for the D.C. tax
abatement program, which can exempt
you from property taxes for ve years
if the value of your home is $356,000 or
less, you occupy the property, and the
combined income of all members of your
household is less than the income limits
established by the District.
Confused yet?
Dont leave your home vacant for long
or your tax rate can go up to $5 per $100
of assessed value or $25,000 per year on
our $500,000 example. Exemptions are
available for residents who are in the pro-
cess of selling their homes.
Worst case? The blighted home can be
taxed at $10 per $100 of assessed value.
In the current real estate market where
homes are selling faster than iPads, how-
ever, its hard to nd a legitimate reason
to pay $50,000 in annual property tax on
a home that can be sold to an investor in
a week or less. Yet it happens.
The good news? For owner-occupants,
the tax assessment is capped at 10 per-
cent per year, meaning that in most cas-
es, you will not pay more than 10 percent
more than you did last year, no matter
how much your assessment goes up.
The better news? Even at 85 cents per
$100 of assessed value, property tax
rates in D.C. are still signicantly less than
the current rates in most of our neighbor-
ing suburbs.
The best news? For most of us, prop-
erty taxes are still deductible, so let your
accountant be your guide.
Thats what we in D.C. call taxation with
representation.
