Bond, Julian. Personal interview. 25 Jan. 2014.

This interview with Julian Bond helped me understand the effects of FBI
surveillance
on the Civil Rights Movement. His firsthand account of surveillance and
harassment
by the FBI helped support my thesis.

Austin.

confrontational in his approach to civil rights activism.
Kilpatrick, James J. "Forman Engaged in a Most Dangerous Game." The Evening Star
[Washington] 8 July 1969: n. pag. Print.
This article was one of the many newspaper articles that the FBI used to make
the
public think James Forman was a threat to domestic security. This article helped
support my thesis.

York, NY.
This letter supported my thesis because it showed how the J. Edgar Hoover
manipulated the publics opinion on Forman.
Levy, Mark. Personal interview. 12 Mar. 2014.
This interview made for a great conclusion to my project. He was also a subject
of
FBI surveillance and his perspective on it greatly strengthened my project.
"Militants Invade a Church in Paris." New York Times 12 May 1969: n. pag. Print.
Another example of an article that the FBI used to portray Forman as a threat to
security. This article further helped me prove that the FBI used newspapers as a
tool
to manipulate the publics opinion.
Scott, Paul. "The Party Line." [Washington] n.d.: n. pag. Print.
I used this article to show how the FBI persuaded the anti-communist society of
America to believe Forman was yet another threat to national security.
U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation. Airtel from Director, FBI to SAC, Atlanta. Pg. 1.
1968,
Oct. 30.

rights groups. This supported my thesis because it is an example of how the FBI
disrupted society when they were the ones who were supposed to be stopping
disruption.
U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation. Airtel from Director, FBI to SACs, Cincinnati, New
York. Pg. 1. 1969, Sept. 25.
This airtel blatantly shows how intrusive the FBI were, regarding Formans

kill
cops, mayors, and governors.
U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation. Airtel from Director, FBI to SAC, New York. Pg. 1.
1968, July 26.
I used this to show how invasive the FBI were when they pursued Forman. It also
shows the stupidity of the FBI because Hoover wanted to develop Forman, who
explicitly spoke against federal institutions like the FBI, as an informant.
U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation. Airtel from Director, FBI to SAC, New York. Pg. 1.
1968, Aug. 7.

tensions and distrust among civil rights groups.

1968.
I used this source to support my thesis by showing how the FBI placed numerous
informants around Forman.
U.S Federal Bureau of Investigation. Airtel from SAC, Atlanta to Director, FBI. Pg. 3.
The agent specifically states that Forman was well-versed in Marxism-
Leninism,
which shows that the FBI tried to prove Forman was a communist. I used this
source
to give more support to my antithesis.
U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation. Airtel from SAC, New York to Director, FBI. Pg. 1.
1969, Sept. 3.
I used this source helped me show how invasive the FBI were in their
investigation
of Forman.

responsibility to ensure domestic peace by disrupting the black community.
U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation. Airtel from SAC, New York to Director, FBI. Pg. 2.
1969.
This source helped my project in many ways. First, it shows how the FBI tried to
use
Formans sexuality as a way to discredit him. Second, it shows that they are
aware
of when he makes phone calls and what he says on phone calls. Finally, it states
that
the FBI are worried about Formans effect on society in the United States. All of
these components make this document very helpful in supporting my thesis
U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation. Airtel from SAC, San Diego to Director, FBI. Pg. 1.
1968, May 31.
This source is another example of how the FBI intentionally hindered the
progress of
the Civil Rights Movement. I used this to show the FBIs negative effect on the
civil
rights movement.
U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation. FBI Arrest Record for Subject Number 1 310 B.

government agencies.

activists like Forman.

FBI.

extensive
surveillance.
U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation. Moore, C. G. 1971, May 12. Book Review The
Political Thought of James Forman. [Book Review of The Political Thought of
James Forman by James Forman].
This review helps my project because it shows how the FBI were intent on
insisting
Forman was a communist or extremist in order to justify their investigations.
United States. Federal Bureau of Investigation, Selection from James Forman FBI file,
newsclipping of arrest in Jackson, Mississippi, accessed 22 November, 2013.
http://archives.qc.cuny.edu/civilrights/items/show/105.

newspaper articles to discredit Forman.
U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation. Teletype from SAC, San Juan to Director, FBI,
New
York Office. Pg. 1. 1969, Aug. 6.
This teletype clearly shows that the FBI monitored Formans phone calls, as well
as
his travel plans. I used this source to support my argument that the FBI were
unconstitutionally surveilling Forman.
Zellner, Dorothy. Personal interview. 1 Feb. 2014.
This interview with was a great help to my project. Dorothy not only worked with
Forman, but was also a very close friend of his. She provided insight to how FBI
