Introduction
Attheoutsetofyourexperimentalprogramyoumaybetemptedtodesignone
comprehensiveexperimentthatincludesallknownfactorstogettheBIGPicture
inoneshot.Thisassumesthatyoucanidentifyalltheimportantfactorsandtheir
optimallevels.Amoreefficient,andlessrisky,approachconsistsofasequenceof
smallerexperiments.Youcanthenassessresultsaftereachexperimentanduse
whatyoulearnfordesigningthenextexperiment.Factorsmaybedroppedor
addedinmidstream,andlevelsevolvedtotheiroptimalrange.
Highlyfractionatedexperimentsmakegoodbuildingblocksforsequential
experiments.ManypeopleusePlackettBurmandesignsforthispurpose,butwe
preferthestandardtwolevelapproachortheminimumrun(MinRun)options
offeredbyDesignExpert

software.Regardlessofyourapproach,youmaybe
confoundedintheinterpretationofeffectsfromtheselowresolutiondesigns.Of
particularconcern,maineffectsmaybealiasedwithplausibletwofactor
interactions.Ifthisoccurs,youmightbeabletoeliminatetheconfoundingby
runningfurtherexperimentsusingafoldoverdesign.Thistechniqueaddsfurther
fractionstotheoriginaldesignmatrix.
Wewilldiscussfoldoverdesignsthatoffertheabilityto:
freemaineffectsfromtwofactorinteractions,or
dealiasamaineffectandallofitstwofactorinteractionsfromothermain
effectsandtwofactorinteractions.
