Petrel2009andPetrel2010.ChangeshavebeenmadeinrelationtothetemplatesthatdescribehowaWellSection
looks,aswellasthelocationofitemsonaWellSection.ThisTIPS&TRICKSshows:1)howtocreatebasic(andnot
sobasic)WellSectionsinPetrel2010,2)wheretheelementsarenowlocated,and3)theuseoftemplatesinthe
newversion.
OneofthebiggestchangesinPetrel2010istheuseoftemplates.Inordertoshowthesechanges,wewillbuild

Creating a Well Section

1. To create a well section, click onWindow New well section window

2. YouwillthenseeapaneltoSelectnewwellsectiontemplate.Youcancreateanewtemplateorusea
previouslyexistingtemplate.Ifyouhavecreatedoneormoretemplatesbefore,theyareavailableto
chooseagainorPetrelprovidessomepredefineddefaulttemplates.TemplatesusedinPetrel2009are
convertedandsaved,adoptingthenameofthewellsection,thensequencing1,2,3,etc.

3. ThetemplatesmayalsobefoundnearthebottomoftheTemplatestabinthefolderWellsectiontemplates.
Fornow,letschoosetocreateanewtemplateandusethedefaultname(inthiscase;Wellsection
template2).

4. ClickOKandthenewemptyWellSectionappearsinthegraphicsareaandalsoatthebottomofthe
Windowstab.

Itisnowtimetoaddwellstothesection.

Add wells to a Well Section
TherearethreemethodsforaddingwellstoaWellSection:
ClickingonthewellsintheWellsfolderand
Clickingonthewellsina3Dwindow.
AddingwellsintheWellSectionSettingsDefinitiondialogusingthehorizontalbluearrow.Highlight
oneormorewellsandclickthehorizontalbluearrowandtheyareaddedtothebottomofthewelllistfor
thesection.
Fornow,letsclickonthewellsintheWellsfolder.Wewilllookatanothermethodlater.
1. ExpandtheWellsfolderuntilyoucanseethewells

2. Inthisexample,IclickedonthewellsC1,C2,C3andC7inthatorder.Thewellsappearinthatorderinthe
Wellsection.Also(thefirstchangefromPetrel2009),thewellsappearintheSettingsdialogfortheWell
sectionundertheWindowstab.BringuptheSettingsandgototheDefinitiontabandyouwillseethewells.

3. Tobebetterabletoseewherethewellslierelativetoeachother,opena3DwindowanddisplaytheWells
alongwiththeWellsectionfencefromtheWellsectionintheWindowstab.

4. IcanseefromtheWellsectionfencethatabetterorderforthewellswouldbeC7C1C2C3.Tochangethe
order,returntotheWellSectionSettingsDefinitiontab,andhighlighttheC7well.Usethe
Uparrow onthelefttomoveittothetopofthelist.

5. AfterhittingApplyorOK,thefencenowlooksmorelikeIwantittolook.

NotethatthedepthtracksareinSSTVD,startatdifferentdepthsandhavedifferentscales.Thesecanalso
bechangedintheSettingsDefinitiontab.
6. ClickontheAbsolute(printedscale)buttonandchangethescaletoaconstantvalue(like2200).
7. Next,changetheWellpositionsynchronizationtoFlattenondepthandpick2000SSTVD.
8. ClickOK.Sometimes,toseetheflattening,youmusttrytoscrollonewellandtheotherswillclickinto

3. ChangethetrackordertohavethedepthtrackbetweenthePorosityandNetNonnettracks.Dothisby
clickingonAutomatic(Thisshowsthedepthstyle(SSTVD,TVD,TVT,etc.)dependingonwhatthesectionis
in)andusingthedownarrow tothelefttoplaceitinthecorrectposition.

Color-fill the logs
Now,letscolorfillbetweenthelogsandthetrackedge.
1. ClickontheCreate/editcurvefill iconontheFunctionbar
2. Clickinalogtrackonthesideofthelogcurveyouwantfilledwithcolor.

Andthetrackisfilledwithcolor.Thecolorcomesfromthetemplatesettingsforthattypeoflog.
3. Also,filltheotherlog.Notethatallthewellsinthesectionhavetheir
logsfilled.

4. Ifyoudontwantthecolortogototheedgeofthetrack,putthecursoratthepointinthecolorfillwhere
youwantthecolortostopandclickagain.

Allofthisinformationaboutlogcolorisstoredinthetemplate.

7. ActivatetheprocessStratigraphyWellcorrelation.ThisaddsanicontotheFunctionbar.PresstheAdd

8. Clickonthewellsintheorderyouwantthem
addedtothesection.(Youmustclickonthe
wellpathoftheobject.Selectioncanbe
difficultifthewellpathsareverythinorthere
aremanywells.Youmighthavetomakethe
PipewidthlargerunderWellsSettings
StylePathinordertobeabletoaccurately
pickthewells).Asyoupickthewells,you
shouldseethemappearintheWellsectionand
