Respondents were asked to indicate which three Asian languages they would be most interested

in studying. By far the top choice, expressed both in total number of responses as well as first
choice, was Japanese (347 responses or 15.93% of all valid responses indicating Japanese as a
first choice; 592 or 27.18% indicating Japanese as a first, second, or third choice). This was
followed by Mandarin (161 responses or 7.39% of all valid responses indicating Mandarin as a
first choice; 455 or 20.89% indicating Mandarin as a first, second, or third choice), and Hindi (89
responses or 4.09% of all valid responses indicating Hindi as a first choice; 323 or 14.83%
indicating Hindi as a first, second, or third choice). Korean was a close runner-up with 13.73% of
all valid responses indicating it as a first, second, or third choice.

Respondents were asked to indicate which three Asian studies related subject areas they would be
most interested in studying. The top choice, expressed both in total number of responses as well
as first choice, was Arts (133 responses or 12.08% of all responses indicating Art as their first
choice; 208 or 18.89% of all responses indicating Art as a first, second, or third choice). The
second and third choices are a little more unclear. History received the next highest number of 1st
choice selections (42 responses or 3.81% of all responses History as their first choice) but was
third in overall terms of selection with 159 or 14.44% of all responses indicating History as a
first, second, or third choice. Sociology received the next highest number of 1st choice selections
(38 responses or 3.45% indicating Sociology as their first choice), yet only fourth in terms of
overall selection (156 responses or 14.17%) behind religion with 172 (15.62%) of all selections
and History with 159 (14.44%). Without knowing the current major of the student, this data may
not be as useful as the proportions of one major over another may have skewed any results.
