1. (a) What are the applications of tension members? Give some examples.
(b) A 300 ISF 14 mm of grade Fe410 is used as a tension member in a lattice
girder. It is connected to a 18 mm thick gusset plate by 18 mm diameter bolts
of grade 4.6 Calculate the eective net area of the member, if
i. chain bolting is done as shown in Figure 1.
ii. zig-zag bolting is done as shown in Figure 1. [5+10]

2. Design an unrestrained beam of 7m span subjected to service loads as follows. Dead
load 75kN/m and imposed load of 25kN/m. [15]
3. (a) What are the advantages of the bolted connections over riveted connections.
(b) Two ats of Fe 410 grade steel, each 210 mm x 8 mm, are to be jointed using
20 mm diameter, 4.6 grade bolts, to form a lap joint. The joint has to transfer
a factored load of 275 kN. Design the joint and determine suitable pitch for
the bolts. [5+10]
4. Design an unstiened seated connection to support a beam ISLB350 @ 495 N/m
transmitting an end reaction of 125KN to the ange column ISHB 200 @ 400N/m.

5. Design a tie member of a roof truss to carry a load of 75 kN using a single angle.
Length of the member between the nodal points is 1.2 meters. Design a suitable
weld to connect the member to a gusset plate 6 mm thick. [15]
6. (a) Write a short notes on general stability, stability against overturning and sway
stability.
(b) What are the various steps involved in the construction of steel structures?

7. Design a central section of bolted plate girder of 20 meters span subjected to two
concentrated loads of 450 kN at one third span points. It is subjected to uniformly
distributed load of 50 kN/m exclusive of self weight. Design the fasteners. [15]
8. Design a gusseted base for a column ISWB 550, 6.5 m long with cover plates of
400 mm x 20 mm on both faces. The column carries a factored load of 5000 kN.
M 10 plain concrete will be provided under the base plate. Sketch the column base
neatly. [15]

1. Design the principal tie member to carry a tensile force of 35 kN. The panel length
is 3 metres. Design the connections. apply the slenderness check. [15]
2. (a) What are the applications of tension members? Give some examples.

girder. It is connected to a 16 mm thick gusset plate by 18 mm diameter bolts
of grade 4.6 Calculate the eective net area of the member, if
i. chain bolting is done as shown in Figure 2.
ii. zig-zag bolting is done as shown in Figure 2. [5+10]

3. (a) Why llet welds are preferred compared to butt welds?
(b) Two ISF sections 200 mm x 10 mm each and 1.5 m long are to be joined to
make a member of length 3 m. Design a butt joint with the bolts arranged
in the diamond pattern. The ats has to carry a factored tensile force of 350
kN. Steel is of grade Fe 410. 20 mm diameter bolts of grade 4.6 are used to
make the connections. Also, determine the net tensile strength of the main
plate and cover plates. [4+11]
4. An ISLB325 @ 431N/m transmits an end reaction of 150 KN to the ange of column
ISHB300 @ 630N/m. Design an unstienend seated connection. [15]

5. (a) Classify the steel structural members based on the load transfer.
(b) What are the various steps involved in the construction of steel structures?

6. Design a 20 meter long simply supported welded plate girder carrying a uniformly
distributed load of 60kN/m excluding the self weight and three concentrated loads
of 350 kN each at quarter span.Assume the girder is laterally supported through
out. [15]
7. Design a built-up column 7 m long to carry factored axial load of 1000 kN. The
column is restrained in position but not in direction at both the ends. Design the
column with two channels placed toe-to-toe. Provide single lacing system with
site welded connection. Assume steel of grade Fe 410 and bolts of grade 4.6. [15]
8. A compound beam is to carry a uniformly distributed dead load of 300kN and an
imposed load of 500kN. The beam is simply supported over a span of 12meters.
Allow 30kN for the weight of the beam. The overall depth should not exceed
700mm. the bearing plate width is 300mm. Full lateral support is provided for
compression ange. [15]

1. A hall 8m 24m is covered with an RC slab 150mm thick supported on rolled steel

2. (a) Explain the various factors aecting the strength of tension members.
(b) Compute the tensile strength of an angle section ISA 150 x 115 x 12 mm of
Fe 410 grade steel connected with the gusset plate as shown in the gure 3
below for the following cases.
i. gross section yielding
ii. net section rupture. [5+10]

5. Compute the loads on a steel roof truss to suit the following data
Span of the truss=12 meters
Type of truss= fan type
Roof cover=Galvanised corrugated GC sheeting
Spacing of roof truss=4.5 meters

6. An I section bracket is connected to the column by welds as shown in gure 4.
Determine the load W which can be safely carried. The permissible stress in the

1. Design the main tie of a roof truss. Maximum force in tension in 75 kN. Maximum
compressive force due to wind is 85 kN. [15]
2. (a) How do you classify the bolted connections.
(b) Two plates 10 mm and 18 mm thick are to be jointed by double cover butt
joint. Design the joint for the following data.
Factored design load = 650 kN.
Bolt diameter = 20 mm
Grade of steel = Fe 410
Grade of bolts = 4.6
2 cover plates (one on each side) = 8 mm thick. [5+10]
3. (a) Briey explain the possible limit states that are considered in the limit state
method of design of steel structures.
(b) Briey explain the various structural stability checks considered by the IS
code. [8+7]
4. Determine the tensile capacity of the sections shown in gure 5 below if
(a) angles are placed on the opposite sides of the gusset plate (tack bolted)
(b) angles are placed on the same side of the gusset plate (tack bolted)
(c) angles are not tack bolted.
Thickness of the gusset plate = 16 mm
Diameter of the bolts = 16 mm
Number of bolts = 6
Pitch of the bolts = 50 mm
Edge distance of bolts = 30 mm
Grade of bolts = 4.6

5. Design a suitable rolled steel joist for a roof of a hall 7.5m 12m consists of 100mm
thick RC slab supported on steel beams spaced at 3m apart. The nishing may be
taken as 1kN/m

and the live load is taken as 4 kN/m

. Self weight of the beams
is taken as 1kN/m. Take the limiting deection span/250. [15]

The span of the girder is 18 metres.stieners were provided at 2 metresinter-
vals.Determine the shear atrength of the panel. [15]
