dozens of third-party hopefuls

have in common is a sense that
the Democrats and Republicans
arent getting the job done.
As the two major parties had
their primaries Tuesday, the
independents signed up for

Kenneth Cody

their November run, including

six who are vying for the Congressional seat held by outgoing U.S. Rep. Rush Holt (D12th Dist.).
Those who filed petitions are: Hopewell Township Deputy Mayor Allen Cannon,
representing the Democratic-Republican Party; Kenneth Cody, whose ballot slogan is
Truth Vision Hope; Don DeZarn, representing the Legalize Marijuana Party; Jack
Freudenheim, running under the banner of Start the Conversation; Steven Welzer, a
member of the Green Party; and Ray Yelle, a political newcomer whose slogan is Lets
Do Better.
They will square off against Assemblywoman Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-Mercer) and
Republican Alieta Eck.
Cody, 42, of Lawrence, who previously ran for Congress in 2010 and 2012, is an
advocate for strict campaign finance reform and refuses to accept any political
contributions for his campaign.
Two years ago, over $2 million was raised in our district and I think that money could
go to other organizations instead of collecting money from contributions, he said.
Its a concern of mine that we waste too much money doing that.
Cody, who works for the nonprofit Learning Ally, said he would press for more
bipartisanship, so those elected serve the people, not their political parties.
DeZarn, an Army veteran and former Senate candidate, said it is important that voters
have more choices on the ballot than the two main parties that are not capable of
fixing the problem. The issue of legalization of marijuana, he said, is a symptom of a
much larger problem.
