IDIOT
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson were
going camping. They pitched their tent
under the stars and went to sleep.
Sometime in the middle of the night
Holmes woke Watson up and said:
"Watson, look up at the sky, and tell me
what you see."
Watson replied: "I see millions and millions
of stars."
Holmes said: "And what do you deduce
from that?"
Watson replied: "Well, if there are millions
of stars, and if even a few of those have
planets, its quite likely there are some
planets like Earth out there. And if there
are a few planets like Earth out there, there
might also be life."
And Holmes said: "Watson, you idiot, it
means that somebody stole our tent."

LATHAM, NY - For the past decade, the
Muslim community of the capital region has
been patiently waiting for a larger mosque to
serve their needs. The Masjid al Hidaya
project in Latham, under the leadership of
MCT, is close to it's debut.
"Every effort is being spent to open the masjid
just in time for Ramadan, inshallah. However
there are still some obstacles we need to
overcome" said Information Secretary and
Youth co-ordinater Mr. Ahsan Memon.
WATERVLIET - Last Jummah brother Abdul
Raheem student of Imaam Jamil Ahmad gave
the khutbah at the Bosnian masjid in
Watervliet on a very beautiful topic, tauba.
He described the different steps in achieving
true tauba from Allah SWT. The most
important thing to remember is that one must
never give up on the Mercy of Allah SWT.
Brother Abdul Raheem said, that if we are
sinning and we think that "Oh man, I shouldn't
be doing this because I'm disobeying Allah."
that is a really good thing. The first step is to
SCHENECTADY - Vice President of the ICCD
Dr. Muhammad Siddiq Tai said The ICCD
need volunteers in the holy month of
Ramadan. He said as everybody
knows,Islamic Center of the Capital District
hosts thousands of Muslim families during
Ramadan. All work is managed by volunteers
for Iftar and dinner every day. May Allah
reward all those who work selflessly to provide
this great community service.
He also noted that they are seeking to comply
with the final city requests, such as,
landscaping, parking lot lights and interior
lighting as well as obtainment of a certificate of
occupancy from the city. These are some large
expenses prior to the opening of the masjid.
"We are requesting some assistance from the
community to help expedite the opening of our
new masjid. Many of you made pledges and
now we are in need of those pledges fulfilled
as we approach the finish line."
realize that we are sinning and the second is
to immediately feel deep regret for that action.
It is very important to use that feeling of regret
and amplify it to achieve the next step to
tauba. The next step is to make a promise to
yourself that you will never commit this sin
again. Sincerity and tauba go hand in hand,
you have to be 100% sincere in your tauba
and realize whatever it is you are doing is for
the sake of Allah SWT. Tauba means to
"return", when we make sincere tauba it
means we are "returning to Allah SWT."
He said we also need volunteers for baby
sitting and room clean up on June 17 from 12
noon to 3 pm.
Dr. Tai said, if anyone intrested to serve
community as volunteer please contact to
Sr. Maliha at 518-275-2764. or Sr. Shakira at
518-218-1522.

their limbs and with their soul. Its unfortunate
that in a nation where our soldiers who have
sacrificed significantly with their lives are being
ridiculed by some selfish elements in our
country. I was further astonished to notice his
spirit and his charisma after some unpatriotic
Pakistanis made him go through where he
takes positions for our country. He has still
belief in the system of his country that he faces
the same man face to face who once tried to
dislodge him by hijacking his plan in the mid
air almost to the point of running it out of fuel.
Still, he believes that of all what goes around
Pakistan would come out of turmoil but for that
its sons and its daughters would have to come
out of the confines of their lives .
I feel Gen Pervez Musharraf has still a lot to
offer to this nation at this critical juncture
where we need a strong leadership at the
center. Trust me this meeting has given me
great confidence as an individual and also
great confidence in the future of our
country. When I walked out awaiting our next
one already. I believed that unless there are
leaders like him out there. Nothing can happen
to our motherland. Inshallah! Pakistan

suffered too, as Vohras one-handed carve
carried over the third-man boundary and Saha
hooked for six to take 20 runs off the 15th
over. Vohra got to his 50 off 42 balls; Saha
needed only 29 and did not let up. They added
129 in 12 overs.
By the time Saha lofted Narine to long-on,
where the boundary rider parried the ball for
six, to bring up his century off 49 balls, the
clamour of wanting to see Maxwell and Miller
had long died down. Kings XIs previous best
in three innings against Knight Riders this
season had been 149. They got to 199 tonight,
despite their three overseas guns and Sehwag
contributing only nine runs. In their last ten
overs, Kings XI had scored 141 runs. Those
first ten overs cost them in the end.

Sport: Pepsi IPL T20 Final - Manish Pandey guns KKR to second title
The Report by George Binoy
In a high-intensity final played in flawless spirit
between two teams full of top-billed cricketers,
the five headlining performances came from
Indian players without international Twenty20
experience. Four of those efforts were for
Kings XI Punjab, in search of their maiden IPL
title in seven seasons, but the defining one
was played by Manish Pandey and he ensured
Kolkata Knight Riders victorious run of eight
matches leading into the final culminated in
their second championship.
Pandeys 94 off 50 balls, an innings fuelled by
an urgency that did not abate, pulled off the
highest successful chase in any Twenty20
final. He lit up the Chinnaswamy Stadium, as
Kings XI legspinner Karanveer Singh picked
off three of his team-mates, and as left-arm
spinner Akshar Patel displayed outstanding
composure to concede 5.25 an over, while
most bowlers on both sides bled at more than
10. Pandeys gutsy salvo came in response to
Wriddhiman Saha scoring the first hundred in
an IPL final, and Manan Vohra compiling a
half-century, to lead Kings XI to 199. Knight
Riders were left needing to achieve their
highest score of the season; they did it with
three balls to spare.
Pandey, however, did not see the chase
through. He was Karanveers fourth wicket and
when he walked off the field, raising his bat to
acknowledge cheers at a venue he calls home
in the Ranji Trophy, Knight Riders needed 21
off 18 balls. Through singles the equation
came down to 11 off seven, and Mitchell
Johnson, who had bowled a succession of
yorkers in his final over, signed off with a
half-tracker. Piyush Chawla hooked it for six.
Kings XI captain George Bailey was out of
options and had to give the final over to
I knew Manish Pandey will win it for me, said
KKR owner Shahrukh Khan
Parwinder Awana, who had conceded 38 in
three previous overs. His third ball was a full
toss outside off stump, and Chawla carved it to
the backward-point boundary, triggering off a
Knight Rider pitch invasion.
At no stage during the chase of a daunting
target did Knight Riders fall far behind the
asking rate, which was 10 per over at the start.
Pandey watched Robin Uthappa drive the first
ball of the innings to the extra-cover boundary
and then perish off the fourth, and when he
took strike for the next delivery, Pandey
whipped a short of a length offering from
Johnson through midwicket with perfect timing.
Knight Riders took 10 off the first over and
Pandey said later, after the game, that he had
realised then how to go about the challenge.
Knight Riders did not hit a six during the
Powerplay, and yet they scored 59. Pandey
and Gautam Gambhir placed several drives
through the infield but the highlight of their
53-run stand was the running between the
wickets, which allowed Kings XI only eight dot
balls in the first six overs. Gambhir then holed
out to Karanveers first ball; Pandey responded
to that setback by driving the next over cover
for the innings first six.
With Yusuf Pathan at the crease, the sixes
began to flow. He carved Karanveer over extra
cover and long-off off consecutive deliveries,
and punished a long-hop and a full toss from L
Balaji over the leg-side boundary. In between
those sixes, Pandey tore into Awanas shoddy
lengths, pulling repeatedly to help take 18 off
the 11th over. Patel began to bowl during this
acceleration and dried up one end, conceding
only five runs in his first two overs.
After adding 71 in 43 balls for the third wicket,
Yusuf skied Karanveer to Maxwell at long-on.
Pandey countered by clouting the next ball
over the same fielders head. When Ryan ten
Doeschate also holed out to long-on, leaving
Knight Riders with 32 to get off 21, Pandey
once again smashed the next ball for six in
that same direction. Only after he fell did the
chase get nervy for Knight Riders, but Chawla
held it together to thwart a spirited Kings XI
campaign.
Unlike the Knight Riders chase, which
motored along at a nearly constant pace, the
Kings XI innings was a story of two
unbelievably different halves. The first half was
a blur of flailing arms and aimless bats as the
Knight Riders bowlers fast and spin
exerted control. Sehwag failed against the
extra pace of Umesh Yadav and George
Baileys promotion to No.3 lasted two balls.
After six overs, Kings XI had made 32, their
lowest Powerplay score of the season. They
were only 58 after ten.
Just when it seemed Kings XI had blundered
by holding Glenn Maxwell and David Miller
back to Nos. 5 and 6, Saha and Vohra
orchestrated a jaw-dropping turnaround in
tempo. Saha hit 35 runs off the 18 balls he
faced from Narine mostly on the leg side
and took 32 off 13 balls from Chawla. Morkel

Bosnia to use drones to detect mines in flooding
Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) will deploy
drones to examine mine fields in flooded areas
in a bid to find relocated mines during the
flooding.
A team of BiH Mine Action Center (BHMAC)
will conduct surveillance over mine fields,
supported by several Belgian experts who will
arrive in BiH on Friday.
Assistant Director of BHMAC Ahdin Orahovac
said helicopter drones would be used to
monitor the mine fields, local media reported.
Those drones, equipped with cameras, fly at
an altitude of 5-10 meters and take images of
the mine areas. Images sent by the drones
The humanitarian rescue operations
conducted by the EU following the recent
floods and long term assistance for the country
were discussed at a meeting on Thursday, 6
June 2014 between the Head of the EU
Delegation/EU Special Representative,
Ambassador Peter Sorensen, and the Prime
Minister of the Federation of Bosnia and
Herzegovina, Mr Nermin Niksic.
Ambassador Sorensen informed the Prime
Minister that over 800 rescue personnel,
including armed forces, of EU Member States
have been part of the overall effort via the EU
Emergency Response Mechanism, rescuing
around 1,700 people. Additionally, EUFOR
have rescued around 1,500 people through
their operations. The EU Civil Protection Team
remains on the ground to co-ordinate the EU
contribution. He noted that the European
Union is consulting intensively with the BiH
authorities on the short to medium term
assistance efforts, parallel with the
enable the recognition of objects larger than 1
centimeter.
Experts will use the images and other
information to identify the new areas with
relocated mines during the flooding.
Some mine fields in BiH were hit with heavy
rain and landslides during the flooding last
week, raising concerns that some mines may
be carried into rivers, even residence zone.
There are some 120,000 mines in BiH, left
from the Bosnian War in the 1990s.
Drones are not new to the Balkans. In fact the
first U.S. military drones to be used in
complex, joint tactical operations in an active
ongoing work on the Recovery Needs
Assessment.
Prime Minister Niksic, in detail, briefed
Ambassador Sorensen on the plans of the
Federation Government as a response to the
consequences of the devastating flood.
The Ambassador and the Prime Minister also
discussed the outcome of the recently held
Forum for Prosperity and Jobs in Bosnia and
Herzegovina. The Ambassador noted that the
consensus of participants was that high
unemployment rates, especially among youth,
low rates of investment and growth, a
complicated and non-transparent business
climate, and a low level of social support for
the less-well-off in society are the key issues to
be addressed by a coherent and
comprehensive reform agenda.

By now drones are the constant over the

attempt to help with the displaced mines due
to flooding and perhaps take the drone usage

An Australian diplomat based in Vienna, where
the Australian Embassy to Bosnia and
Herzegovina is located, has visited Bosnia and
Herzegovina on June 5 to learn firsthand of the
extensive damage caused by recent floods.
Mr Vafa Ghazavi met with officials from the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs and representatives
of the United Nations, to receive briefings on
the situation across the country and on the
recovery effort currently underway.He also
visited some flood-affected areas.
"There has been a great deal of concern in
Australia over the tragic loss of life due to
these floods and the damage they have
caused," Mr Ghazavi said.
Australia is a top ten donor to the UN Central

Turkey: The presidential elections and the opposition
By: TAHA ZHAN
The 2014 presidential elections present(ed) an
important opportunity for the opposition
parties. If, their performance until now is any
indicator, it seems they will squander this
opportunity as well.
The answer to the crisis of presidential
elections the opposition seems to be trapped
in is hidden in the Turkish political landscape
that became clearly visible since 2007. The
key for the opposition to climb out of this crisis
is in their capacity to change this political
landscape.
That Turkey was going to face a tripartite
campaign race during 2014-2015 has been
known since the Constitutional Court ruling on
the amendments to the electoral laws in 2012.
The upcoming presidential elections signify the
last chance for the opposition, which already
already relinquished the March 30 elections to
the actors of Dec. 17, 2013, to prove that it
can change.
In fact, the moment the March 30 elections
came to mean more than local elections was
the moment the first round of the presidential
polls were completed. If the opposition
continues to remain indifferent to the
presidential race, there might even be no need
for a second round. If that is the case, the
outcome of the no-longer-necessary second
tour will not be unlike the 2015 elections.
Given the current circumstances, it would be
expected that the opposition would turn the
presidential race into an existential issue. On
the contrary, we are witnessing the opposition
gradually slipping away from constructive
politics and evolving into an anti-political entity
that prefers the streets to the political sphere.
Neither the Republican People's Party (CHP)
nor the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) can
seem to find the courage to transcend beyond
their anti-Erdo?an rhetoric and transform
themselves into builders of a new Turkey.
After every defeat at the polls, instead of
taking account of the rights and wrongs like
any responsible political actor, they choose to
stay in their comfort zone, namely the limited
areas of the political landscape in which they
are trapped. Unfortunately, this limited
existence in limited areas does not seem to
bother the CHP all that much despite the fact
that it calls itself the "main opposition party."
For the two opposition parties to take any
responsibility in the country's democratization,
their leaders will have to undergo fundamental
changes, revise their 20th century ideological
positions, venture out of their comfort zones,
and take the risk of trying to persuade their
constituency to accept change.

Honor killing in Lahore

What we need are mechanisms of "alternate

that can offer "structured counseling and

ambit of national laws.
What we need are mechanisms of "alternate
dispute resolution" and civil society institutions
that can offer "structured counseling and
solutions" tailored to local conventions,
circumstances and needs within the overall
ambit of national laws. Such non-coercive
institutions can function with informal or formal
police support. Our goals should be to reduce
the possibilities of criminalisation of intra-family
disputes - FIR's, arrests, coercive police
interventions, court cases, lawyers and bails. It
may help us to understand that Iqbal
(Farzana's second husband and main culprit)
had filed an application in Lahore High Court
to quash the FIR's lodged by Farzana's father.
Court cases in such circumstances only
exacerbate social tensions; this was third such
hearing on which Farzana was killed by her
family - and the whole country or perhaps the
world was rocked.
Why Iqbal the incurable lover was the real
culprit? He is around 45, married before, has
five children to his responsibility (including
three from the previous marriage of his first
wife Aisha), had the audacity of initiating a
socially repugnant affair with an 18 year old girl
in 2007-9, in a household he enjoyed access
based on family trust. He strangulates his first
wife apparently for love of Farzana; becomes a
police absconder, gets arrested in Farzana's
village around Nankana, in 2013; manages his
pardon of Qisas from Aisha's son and then
demands Farzana's hand who meanwhile gets
into nikah with her cousin - Mazhar - in May
2012. Could Farzana's father, existing in the
social pressure cooker of a late 19th century
place like Nankana, have married his daughter
to this man; 20 years older, five children,
murderer and very poor?
In Jan 2014, Iqbal made Farzana elope with
him, got married on 7th Jan and Farzana
described herself "unmarried" on nikah
register; Iqbal - knowing the system - lodges
Farzana into a Dar-ul-Aman, takes Fazana to
a Judicial Magistrate where she admits of
marrying him of her free will (she is 24/25 now)
and then lodged application in Lahore High
Court to quash FIR by Farzana's father.
Interestingly, while Iqbal, doing all this, was
throughout on the right side of the law in 21st
century Pakistan; he was totally on the wrong
side of a conservative society. This extreme
form of Ishq-e-Mamnoon, will not be easily
solemnised by South Asian film makers and
certainly the social order the way it stands in
Nankana (a town steeped in late 19th century)
had to resist and react.
Despite all the inherent conflict, most men,
even rural, are not as irresponsible or rash as
Iqbal was; most young or uneducated women -
unlike Farzana - are wise to rebuff slippery
situations like these and most families, despite
their time warp, even in rural Punjab don't end
up murdering their daughters with bricks. We
need to think out of box to find solutions.
Patriarchal family is still the center of power
and control across the country; it has its
defects, many of them plain evil. But this
"patriarchal family" nevertheless holds the
society together; preventing violent criminal
ghettos and denying supplies of millions of
confused, disoriented young men and women
- lost in time and space - as potential recruits
to extremist ideologies. Patriarchal family's
sudden collapse will add to the chaos in a
country which is already struggling to keep its
head above water. We need to find ways to let
this governing structure, this basic building
block of our society, enter modernity without
letting it suddenly collapse.
Our immediate goal should be to save family
structure from criminalization for issues that
have been part of the family's internal conflict.
In this day and age we can't demand married
men and women, like Farzana and Iqbal not to
fall in love, however forbidden it may be. We
can create intermediate layers of intervention,
of counseling and support that can find
solutions or offer palliative understanding to
make things easy for families caught in the
kind of traumatic situation that finally ended in
the murder in Lahore. Dar-ul-Amman, the kind
of which Farzana was in since January, only
offers food and protection. We need to build
their capacity to offer counseling to families to
find acceptable solutions.
Police, local political elite and lower judiciary -
most of whom themselves are convinced of
the value of 'honor' - need to be trained to
understand these conflicts in the context of
modernity and to be able to help institutions
like Dar-ul-Amman, local councils and
government approved local bodies to find
solutions. In most cases these negotiations to
find acceptability for situations that are locally
unpalatable can take weeks or months and
intervening layers of institutions have to be
trained for that. This is what their capacity
building is about. And most importantly media
and educational institutions need to change
the narrative; with the help of celluloid and
books we need to spread the message around
that young adults have the right to make their
choices in love - and this includes the right to
make painful blunders. And there is no family
'dishonor' in matters of heart.

Honor killing in Lahore:
Condemning versus finding solutions
By: Moeed Pirzada
I thought I was unable to explain Farzana's
tragedy the way I wanted to do in my TV
program, Siyasat Aur Qanoon; idiot box as
repeatedly pointed out by many veterans of
print journalism has its limitations as a
medium, but the way it has been discussed
and commented upon by our "neo-liberal
columnists" in the newspapers was equally
disappointing. First, they mislead the world by
repeatedly using expressions as "Stoned to
Death", "Inside Lahore High Court", "Police
watching as spectators". Second and perhaps
the worst part was: they brought this reinforced
emphasis on "making laws" and "strict
enforcements" as if making and enforcing
laws, without considering the social construct,
history and socio-economic circumstances, will
help in a country like Pakistan - already
dealing with chaos created by thoughtless
lawmaking and confused patchy
implementations that not only negate each
other but make a hash of the whole system of
governance.
Let's start with the basic facts: This murder
took place, in a flash, around 7.40am, in the
midst of two small mobs, each consisting of
ten to fifteen, clashing with each other on Fane
Road (heading towards Mall Road, surrounded
by buildings of State Bank and Lahore High
Court). These two rival mobs, one with
Farzana and her second husband and the
other with her family and her first husband
were coming from the lawyers' chambers
walking towards the High Court. One of the
brothers (reportedly Ghulam Ali) had a .30
caliber pistol as well. This family came with the
clear intention of killing Farzana and in all
probability her lover. As they started
challenging each other, in shouts and abusive
provocations and were getting into fist fights,
her brother took out his gun and shot Farzana
hitting her in the shin. Right at that moment, an
off-duty Police Sub-Inspector, Arif (travelling
from Sialkot to record statements in Lahore
High Court), an unrelated pedestrian that just
happened to be there intervened and snatched
the pistol from Ghulam Ali and became part of
the scuffle between several men. It is during
that scuffle that other men - probably father
and brother and cousins - got hold of bricks
from an ongoing construction site and hit
Farzana several times, killing her.
All that tragic drama, extinguishing one and
destroying several other lives from the same
family, was over in less than three minutes or
perhaps two. So technically speaking it's true
that the poor woman - Farzana- was brutally
killed by her family using brick as a "murder
weapon" but which ever journalist - Pakistani
or international - created the term "stoned to
death" inside the Lahore High Court with very
clear connotations of a religious style
sentencing was deliberately sending a wrong
signal to the whole world. Pakistani columnists
have later only reinforced the same story with
vehemence and without bothering to check.
But our worthy columnists' failure does not
stop there. Their tragedy lies in knee jerk
reactions, in not reflecting deeply, in not asking
questions, and in not offering analysis or
seeking solutions. They are clubbing together
several incidents of violence and painting them
with a broad brush; mostly in the realm of
religion. Our columnists repeated lament: Oh!
What is happening to us? is the tip of the
ice-berg; most readers would expect them to
provide answers instead of merely repeating
what is on their own minds.
Unfortunately mere condemnation, however
shrill the voice, will not resolve anything, and
an unthinking tendency of blasting
governments or pushing them to make more
laws of social engineering may further
aggravate such violence. What we need to
realise is that many or perhaps most parts of
Pakistan - in FATA, Baluchistan, Southern
Punjab and interior Sindh - are still living
amidst cultural values and social support
systems anywhere from 8th century to 19th;
depending upon where and in what
circumstances you were born. But don't be
surprised if I argue that even the collective
consciousness and value system in small
towns in central Punjab, adjacent to Lahore, is
locked in late 19th or early 20th century.
Many of us - sitting in our islands of
Islamabad, Lahore and small parts of Karachi
are experiencing 21st century glued to our
Twitter handles on our fourth generation
Samsung Galaxies - worry about what State
Department or EU think about us. But we are
not prepared to labour hard to analyse that
how global integration, free flows of images
and sounds, repeated waves of modernity and
demands of change and our personal
ambitions to transform lives of these
communities, as per our desired self-image,
merely through the tools of law making have
created powerful pressures and uncertainties
around "communities caught in time warp" and
in many cases because we are the
beneficiaries of an unequal society.

"Sometimes one need to go an extra mile to
achieve of what may not be your personal
goals but goals for your nation. Every now and
then people rise from the ashes of such and
create their own destiny. This is exactly what is
required for the future of our Pakistan. We
would need to rise from the ashes to rebuild
our nation" said former President of Islamic
Republic of Pakistan General Pervez
Musharraf during my recent meeting with him
in Karachi; a dream come true. Trust me I
have adored this man for many years without
meeting him. But today when I got the
opportunity to meet him. It was nothing short
of an emotional ride. I felt strongly that I made
the right choice to follow him.
Since morning I was a little nervous of creating
the right impression on the Boss. I walked
back and forth in my room to collect my
thoughts for what would I say when I meet
him. But when I sat in the meeting room
awaiting. I could feel my heart beating faster
as he is the man who I believed would deliver
for Pakistan when I voted for him on the day
my mother died on April 30th, 2002. He was
the man who gave me and millions of
Pakistanis pride by putting us on the map of
the world which was generally conceived as
just India. He was the man who led Pakistan to
to his masters in PMLN. Gen Pervez
Musharraf was the man who made me belief
that Pakistan can make it to the top. Awaiting
to meet him there in the few minutes spent
were like years.
Finally when he walked in. It was a dream
come true to meet him. I would just try to
recapture the memorable moments in a few
lines. The discussion began from Pakistan and
trust me it ended with Pakistan. He looked
positive, charged and composed as he talked
about the same country he has fought and
bled for. He was overwhelmed by the support
he has been shown by all the corners of the
nation. Let it be KPK and let it even be
Baluchistan where the misconception exists
about him as portrayed in the media. He has
been shown affection and love from all the
nooks and the corners of the country.
Not a man of few words but a friendly and a
down to earth personality. Gen Pervez
Musharraf was very clear about the future of
the country and believed that people of
Pakistan and those parties who are actual
patriots would pull out this nation out of the
grasp of the feudals and hypocrites. He
strongly believes that Pakistan is a strong
nation and its people are much stronger and
with right personality, character and
mobilization. People of Pakistan would ensure
that they get their rights. His views of
Pakistan's strategic importance in the region
are being reinforced that with certain political
development in our neighboring countries. We
need strong leadership which can show
brinkmanship to lead the nation.
He believes that we can only rise as a nation
and there is no other way. He is the man who
owns his decisions which in my view stand
reinforced today when we see that the same
media channels who were the front runners in
the campaign against him to malign his
reputation to bring in a corrupt lot of people are
being seen in their true colors by the
Pakistanis today. If I have my way would
charge them for Treason and Murder as their
financial gains have become Pakistan's
enigma. Again in my own personal opinion as I
stated to Gen Pervez Musharraf that he was
right to take the Talibans head on and
especially in the case of Laal Masjid when we
see today that a library has been dedicated to
Osama Bin Laden instead of some one like
Quaid e Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. I further
assured him that his principal stand on
Chaudhary Iftikhar was rightful in its entirety as
written in one of my earlier blogs. And I further
assured him that true patriots and Pakistanis
are with him and are ready to be on his side
when the time comes for serving our
motherland.
I am really proud of Pakistan Army; our true
asset for standing by a true patriot as General
Pervez Musharraf rightly said by him in our
conversation that our Army is the Center of
Gravity for our nation and its enemies are
trying to dislodge this knowing its significance.
Its unfortunate knowing the sacrifice our men
give to protect our motherland. Day in and day
out. With their blood, with their sweat, with

Modi's found his Pranab Mukherjee
By: Anita Katyal
Although the two are said to be on extremely
friendly terms, Prime Minister Narendra Modi
and home minister and Bharatiya Janata Party
president Rajnath Singh appear to be locked
in a silent tussle these days. In view of the
BJP's strict "one man, one post" policy, Mr
Singh has to necessarily relinquish the party's
presidentship after his induction into the Union
Cabinet. According to the party grapevine, Mr
Singh is not keen on handing over charge of
the party to somebody else. While resisting the
move, he is said to have cited L.K. Advani's
example when he had continued as party chief
for nearly 10 months while he was leader of
the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
Mr Modi, on the other hand, wants to install
one of his protgs as BJP president so that
he can exercise control over the party. He also
wants to guard against the emergence of two
power centers in the party. In fact, Mr Modi
made the first move in this direction when he
called a meeting of all party office bearers for a
pep talk at his official residence last week. He
is also said to have decided to keep his
weekends free for party-related work to make
sure he does not lose touch with the
organization.
Finance and defense minister Arun Jaitley may
be officially designated No. 4 in the BJP-led
government's pecking order, but, for all
purposes, he is the de facto No. 2. A lot has
been said about how Prime Minister Narendra
Modi's ministerial team has his unmistakable
imprint. While that may be the case with
regard to the appointment of Smriti Irani as the
human resource development minister, Mr
Jaitley's contribution can hardly be overlooked.
It is well known that newly-inducted ministers
like Nirmala Sitharaman, Prakash Javadekar
and Piyush Goel have been members of the
Jaitley fan club although they might have
shifted allegiance to Mr Modi now. Similarly, all
the new law officers appointed by the ruling
alliance are known for their proximity to the
finance minister, also a former lawyer.
Although Prime Minister Modi is said to have
clear ideas about the composition of his
ministerial and official team, he could probably
do with a bit of help from somebody who is
familiar with the Delhi circuit. Little wonder
then that Mr Jaitley is being described as Mr
Modi's Pranab Mukherjee, the No. 2 in the
United Progressive Alliance government and
former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's key
adviser and troubleshooter
The new human resource development
minister Smriti Irani may not have many
favorites in the Congress Party but she has
great fondness for former minister and fellow
Rajya Sabha member Rajeev Shukla. And
there is a reason for it. The actor-turned
-politician currently occupies a duplex house
near Lodhi Gardens which was vacated by Mr
Shukla when he moved into a ministerial
bungalow on Safdarjung Road nearly two
years ago. Mr Shukla had apparently tipped
her off about his place when a distraught Ms
Irani complained that she had been first told
she would be allotted a bungalow, only to be
informed later that the offer had been
withdrawn.
Mr Shukla had then used his influence in the
UPA government to make sure the second
allotment came through. When Ms Irani ran
into Mr Shukla recently, after her induction into
the Cabinet, she could not stop thanking him
for getting his old house allotted to her
because it had proved extremely lucky for her.
Not only did she conduct a special puja after
her appointment as the youngest HRD
minister, but she also told Mr Shukla that she
has no intentions of moving out even though
she is now entitled to a bungalow. Needless to
say, Mr Shukla has a standing invitation for a
meal at the minister's residence.
Over the years, the short Victorian poem
Invictus by William Ernest Henley has been a
source of inspiration to many, including the
late Nelson Mandela who recited it to other
prisoners while he was incarcerated in Robben
Island prison. He found the poem extremely
empowering. Former external affairs minister
Salman Khurshid, who lost his Farrukhabad
seat in the recently-concluded Lok Sabha
elections and has returned to practicing law,
also appears to be drawing inspiration from
this poem which was quoted in a dinner
invitation sent out to friends recently.
Mr Khurshid's exceedingly hospitable wife
Louise, who sent out the invites, went on to
mention that like the late Nelson Mandela who
took such courage from Invictus, "we look
forward to a better tomorrow". Several reasons
were cited by the Khurshids for last week's
dinner: to celebrate their son's admission to
Oxford, Louise's birthday and to wish Mr
Khurshid luck for the challenges ahead. This
was probably the last party to be hosted by the
Khurshids at their sprawling Kushak Road
bungalow since they will be vacating the place
shortly and moving to their old Jamia Nagar
house.

A third eye would help us see Narendra Modi a bit better
By: Karan Thapar
As the government completes its first fortnight,
are we witnessing a new Narendra Modi, as
many believe, or was the media simply wrong
in its initial understanding of the man? It's a
question I've been frequently asked and
because I don't have a definitive answer I'm
encouraged to search for one.
Let's start with Mr Modi's personal style. On
the day he was elected leader of the BJP
parliamentary party he knelt and kissed the
ground, called Parliament the temple of
democracy, a phrase evocative of Nehru, and
proceeded to praise all past governments. Did
this appreciation of democracy and generosity
of spirit reveal a new man or prove how little
the press knew him?
I'm not sure what to make of his tears but I
didn't realize Mr Modi had a softer emotional
side that he would reveal in public. They
weren't manufactured unless you credit him
with Oscar-winning acting skills.
I was more struck by the fact that on the 27th,
with three presidents and four prime ministers
to meet, he began his day with a tweet in
praise of Nehru, a prime minister he has
political reservations about, and ended it
calling on Manmohan Singh, who he had just
defeated. Was this politesse or heartfelt
courtesy?
Of course, you could say the aura of prime
ministership that now surrounds him leads us
to perceive Mr Modi differently. Maybe. But
then why didn't office reveal a different
Manmohan Singh or Vajpayee?
For some it's Mr Modi's actions that explain
why they see a new man. The invitation to
Saarc leaders suggests a vision of India's
position in the region and a capacity to deftly
articulate it they had not spotted. The warmth
of the welcome to Nawaz Sharif suggests he
can rise above prejudice, which few thought
possible. I can't deny Mr Modi's early response
to foreign policy was a surprise.
More anticipated, but equally surefooted and
swift, was the way he set out his domestic
agenda. His 10 priorities may be
well-intentioned clichs but after the
uncertainty and ad hoc nature of UPA rule
most view them as welcome reassurance. His
advice not to ignore state governments may
reflect a personal interest but it finds
resonance in many hearts. And the decision to
abolish GOMs and EGOMs was sound good
sense.
What then does all of this add up to? Let me
suggest a few tentative and hesitant
conclusions. I didn't expect displays of
emotion, rich symbolic gestures or a facility for
the mot juste. I didn't think Mr Modi had it in
him. I didn't expect little personal courtesies or
warm effusive handshakes. I didn't think he
had it in him.
Mr Modi's personal behavior is impressive. It's
not office that's changed how we view him.
He's made us think again.
I'm less surprised by his decisions because I
expected swiftness and promptness. He has,
after all, been preparing since September. So
though welcome, I knew he had measures in
mind to ensure a flying start.
Many in the press predicted what the Prime
Minister might do. You can't fault them on that
count. Few anticipated his style or the
generous side of his personality. We never
realized there was this dimension to the man.
So whilst we were not wrong to focus sharply
and, even, singularly on 2002 - and the glaring
failure to condemn the Pune murder
underlines that and is cause for concern - we
now need to look elsewhere as well. A third
eye would be a great help!

personal.)

Jim Frecklington, 64, worked in the Royal
Mews as a young man before returning home
to help organise the Queen's Silver Jubilee
exhibition in Australia.
Having repaired carriages on the family farm in
his youth, he set about building a replica of the
1902 State Landau.
This led to something even more ambitious
and, in 1986, he built the Australian State
Coach, a gift from the people of Australia to
the Queen to mark the country's bicentenary. It
proved a very popular addition to the Royal
Mews, not least because it was the first state
coach with heating.
But Mr. Frecklington, whose family emigrated
from Britain to New South Wales in the 1850s,
was not finished.
'I wanted to make something in honor of Her
Majesty's great reign and something which
represents our extraordinary history,' he
explains as he shows me his spotless creation
in its new home behind the Palace.
So, he set about building something even
larger than the Australian State Coach at his
workshop near Sydney.
The construction was a labor of love. All the
springs, for example, were hand-forged, while
the wheels were cast in aircraft-strength
aluminum and made by one of Australia's
leading racing car designers.
Mr. Frecklington wanted to use the finest
craftsmen and women from all over the
Commonwealth. So, all the leather is English,
as is the gold silk brocade upholstery (from
Sudbury).
The lamps are glazed with the finest lead
crystal from Edinburgh. The intricate heraldic
paintwork has been hand-painted by Irish-born
Australian Paula Church. The door handles
are from New Zealand - each is gold-plated
and inlaid with 24 diamonds and 130
Australian sapphires by Kiwi master jeweler
Mike Baker.
Even the bolts which fix the gold-plated hand
supports to the bodywork have been finished
using the same guilloche enamel as a Faberge
egg. And so it goes on.
Mr. Frecklington has applied the same
mind-boggling attention to detail to the
historical artefacts which give the Diamond
Jubilee State Coach its special status.
He began by asking the custodians of HMS
Victory if he might have a piece of timber from
Nelson's flagship.
Once it was clear Mr. Frecklington had the
endorsement of Buckingham Palace, things
started to progress. 'I knew Victory had
undergone a refit in 1922 and that they had set
aside some timber, and they were kind enough
to let me have some.'
The result is a crown resting on four lions
modelled on those found on the gates of
Buckingham Palace. The entire coach is
covered with heraldic emblems, crests and
motifs, all of which have been approved by the
College of Arms.
He then broadened his quest for other historic
artefacts to include every great building and
institution he could think of.
The trust which looks after Britannia donated
some teak handrails from the old Royal Yacht.
They now form the armrests (flip them up and
there are discreet, Bond-style controls for the
heating and electric windows underneath).
He secured contributions from Windsor Castle,
Balmoral and even the old Royal Box at Ascot.
St Paul's and Winchester Cathedrals
presented certified pieces, as did Westminster
Abbey and many stately homes.
The paneling includes yew from Glamis Castle
in Scotland, where the Queen Mother grew up,
ash from Blenheim Palace and oak from
Althorp, ancestral home of the Spencer family.
Going back somewhat further is a little bit of
timber from the Bronze Age Ferriby boat found
in the Humber.
A strong theme throughout is sacrifice. Hence
the metalwork from a Spitfire, Hurricane and
Lancaster and many of our best-known
battlefields. 'I wanted something every family
in the land can relate to,' he says.
There will be those who wonder why anyone
should go to so much trouble - and how much
it has all cost. Besides, how do you put a price
on all this?
Mr. Frecklington smiles and says he's not sure.
He paid for a lot of it himself, but the coach
has now been formally acquired for the nation
by the Royal Collection Trust following a
private donation. In other words, it hasn't cost
the taxpayer a penny.
After today, though, the public will be able to
view it, along with all the other coaches and
carriages, during the daily opening of the
Royal Mews at the back of Buckingham
Palace.
Though the Queen has seen the finished
product, she will not have ridden in it until
today. Mr Frecklington - who is already
working on his next project, a tribute to horses
that went to war - has been allocated a
ringside view of the royal arrival at the Palace
of Westminster.
'It will be a very special moment,' he says.
'She's a wonderful example to humanity, and
this has been a great team effort.'

With the latest in 21st-century technology -
plus quite a bit from the 19th - it is unique.
And despite having travelled by Concorde,
Royal Yacht, elephant and South Sea canoe,
the Queen has never been carried in anything
quite like the transport which will take her to
today's State Opening of Parliament.
Unveiled for the first time, the new Diamond
Jubilee State Coach is only the second royal
carriage to be built in a century and joins the
unrivalled royal collection of coaches,
phaetons, landaus, broughams and
barouches.
None of the others, however, features a
360-degree 'coachcam' offering a
monarch's-eye view of the procession
gold-plated hydraulics, motor-racing
technology and a dazzling museum.
For this palace-on-wheels is much more than
the ultimate horse-drawn limousine. Open a
diamond-clad door handle and, inside, we find
a time capsule of 1,000 years of history.
Surmounted by a crown made from the
timbers of HMS Victory, which houses the
royal website's 'coachcam', the new state
coach contains relics of all those key moments
sacred to Britain and so much of the
Commonwealth.
The panelling includes slivers of Scott's
Antarctic sled, Sir Isaac Newton's apple tree,
Hut Six at codebreaking center Bletchley
Park, one of Sir Edmund Hillary's Everest
ladders and the beams of most of our great
cathedrals.
As she is drawn behind six horses, the Queen
will be sitting on a piece of Scotland's Stone of
Destiny, upon which monarchs are traditionally
crowned, and surrounded by a bolt from a
Spitfire, a musket ball from Waterloo, a bolt
and rivets from the Flying Scotsman and a
button from Gallipoli.
There's even a fragment of the bronze cannon
from which every Victoria Cross is cast, and a
piece of metal from the wreckage of a 617
Squadron Dambuster.
Little wonder this three-ton coach - 18ft long -
has taken 50 people more than ten years to
assemble. And it is all the idea of one
remarkable Australian.

US soldier Bergdahl was released on last
Saturday to American troops in Afghanistan in
exchange for the five Taleban detainees held
at Guantanamo Bay.
Secretary of State John Kerry defended the
swap of five Guantanamo detainees for
American Bowe Bergdahl on Sunday, amid
reports the captive US soldier was kept at
times in a metal cage and in total darkness.
Kerry doubled down on President Barack
Obama's controversial decision to make the
trade in exchange for the release of Bergdahl,
who the top US diplomat said was at risk of
being tortured by his captors.
"It would have been offensive and
incomprehensible to consciously leave an
American behind, no matter what, to leave an
American behind in the hands of people who
would torture him, cut off his head, do any
number of things," Kerry told CNN's State of
the Union program.
Bergdahl was released on last Saturday to
American troops in Afghanistan in exchange
for the five Taleban detainees held at
Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
Kerry made his remarks amid a news report
on Sunday about the grim conditions in which
Bergdahl was held while a hostage in
Afghanistan.
The New York Times wrote that the army
sergeant has told medical officials that he was
kept in total darkness in a metal cage for
weeks, as a punishment for trying to escape.
Bergdahl, who is receiving medical treatment
at an army facility in Landstuhl, Germany, is
healing physically, but is still emotionally too
fragile to be reunited with his relatives, said the
daily, citing anonymous US officials who have
been briefed on his condition.
"Physically, he could be put on a plane to the
US tomorrow, but there are still a couple of
mental criteria to address: the family
unification piece and the media exposure
piece," said one US official who has been
briefed on his condition told the Times.
The newspaper also reported that Bergdahl
has had no access to news media and at
present is unaware of the controversy raging in
the United States about whether the
administration put US security at risk by
freeing the five Taleban inmates.
Kerry said the freed Taleban, who have been
released to the government of Qatar, are
unlikely to go back on their word and take up
the struggle again against the US.
"I'm not telling you that they don't have some
ability sought some point to go back and get
involved. But they also have an ability to get
killed doing that," he told CNN.
"I don't think anybody should doubt the
capacity of the United States of America to
protect Americans. Nobody."
Meanwhile the FBI reported it was
investigating threats to his relatives back home
in Idaho.
"We are aware of the threats and are working
with our local law enforcement partners to
investigate," FBI spokeswoman Jacqueline
Maguire said, without providing details as to
the nature of the threats.

Ex-Brooklyn Prosecutor Charles J. Hynes Accused of Misuse of Funds
By STEPHANIE CLIFFORD and
WILLIAM K. RASHBAUM
A New York City Department of Investigation
inquiry has implicated Charles J. Hynes, the
former Brooklyn district attorney, in the
improper use of money seized from drug
dealers and other criminal defendants to pay a
political consultant more than $200,000 for his
work on Mr. Hynes's unsuccessful re-election
campaign last year.
The report, which has been referred to the
state attorney general and several other
agencies, concluded that Mr. Hynes could face
larceny charges for the misuse of public funds.
The investigation also found that a widely
respected jurist, Barry Kamins, the
administrative judge for New York City's
criminal courts, violated the judicial code of
of ethics by advising Mr. Hynes on his
campaign, offering legal advice and discussing
matters that the district attorney's office was
actively prosecuting.
Justice Kamins has been relieved of all
administrative duties, a state courts
spokesman said.
The 27-page report, found that Mr. Hynes
potentially violated the City Charter and conflict
of interest board rules; violations of the City
Charter can be charged as misdemeanors. Mr.
Hynes's conduct may have also violated the
state penal code section on official
misconduct. And payments from the office to
the consultant, Mortimer Matz, may have
violated the larceny provisions in the penal
code. Under the code, any larceny of more
than $1,000 is a felony.
The investigation found that in 2013, the office
typically issued two or three checks each
month to Mr. Matz's firm from state
asset-forfeiture funds; from 2003 through
2013, investigators said, the district attorney's
office paid the firm about $1.1 million from
those funds. State law requires that
asset-forfeiture funds be used only for law
enforcement purposes.
The inquiry, which began in November,
included the review of about 6,000 emails sent
to or from Mr. Hynes's official email address
for the 18-month period before the 2013
general election.
Justice Kamins's lawyer, Paul L. Shectman,
called his client one of the city's finest public
servants.
The judicial commission's counsel and
administrator, Robert H. Tembeckjian,
declined to comment. A spokeswoman for the
state attorney general, Eric T. Schneiderman,
also declined to comment; the report was
referred to Mr. Schneiderman's office for
possible criminal prosecution.

ALBANY, NY - The Latham Water District was
named the winner of the annual contest for the
best tasting tap water in Albany County. The
Latham Water District topped two-time
defending champion Guilderland by three
points, 72-69. Now the new champion is
heading to the state regionals in the annual
competition to be named the Best Drinking
Water in New York.
The competition was held at the Empire State
Plaza, where people voted on which tap water
they thought was the best. Latham finished
first among participating water systems from
around the county including the City of
Cohoes, City of Albany, Village of Green Island
and Bethlehem Water District #1. The next
step is the regionals, which will take place later
this summer. The regional winner will compete
against other water systems in the state at the
State Fair in Syracuse..
The Drinking Water Taste Test was sponsored
by the Albany County Health Department and
assistance was provided by the NYS
Department of Health, the Water and
Wastewater Education Outreach Committee
and the NY Rural Water Association. At the
taste test, samplers tried the water and then
filled out a survey with their top preferences.
