Barbara Zwieg and I t oured Europe f o r 5 weeks and al t hough I had good i nt e nt i ons

Barbara, on t he ot her hand, f a i t hf ul l y r os e, r a i n or s hi ne, c i t y o r count ry, and put

Running t he c i t y streets of Pa r i s and London was a nervous experi ence. The roads
belong, first and foremost , t o t he automobile: London and Pa r i s bot h have l ovel y par ks,
very s ceni c t o r un through. The hi ghl i ght of my runni ng was our l a s t day i n Pa r i s when
Barbara and I got out before 6 a.m. t o t ake a running t our of Pa r i s . What a way t o s ee

A s evidence t hat I do some of my bes t t hi nki ng whi l e running, I

It' s t he l i t t l e t hi ngs t hat get you down. A r e a l l y b i g

s ol vi ng some of our pr i ckl y f i t t l e problems--such as sox.
Most runners seem t o wear sox. The s t y l e s ver y wi del y

sox i n t he washer and dr yer , and most t i mes you w i l l end up w i t h
11 sox. Very zeal ous sox count i ng and moni t ori ng of t he wash

Now I b o w expl anat i ons have been of f er ed in t h e pas t ; one

Kany t i mes whi l e runni ng I have observed dead sox l yi ng

as I saw t hes e poor, f or l or n, limp t hi ngs , s o d i r t y t h e c ol or

a f l a s h of i ns i ght c me c t e d t he two thoughts--missing sox in
t he l aundry; abandoned sox on t he road--and my t heor y w a s born.
I t hi nk t h a t a f t e r sox hzve been run in s e v e r d t i mes( t he problem

Now, I have never met any of my ova= missing sox on t he OF-d,

FROM' RUNNER FOR A DAY
by B i l l h n n
I was stooped over double knot t i ng my runni ng shoes when I f i r s t t ook not i ce.
L
Li t e r a l l y hundreds of r ed sockeye salmon were l i g h t l y t hr ashi ng t he s ur f ace of t he
wat er i n a small st ream pa r a l l e l i ng t he pavement. Over my shoul der c i r c l e d two
bal d eagl es near t he l e f t r i m of t he blue-white magnificence of t he Mendenhall Gl aci er .
Broken pi eces of c r ys t a l l i ne i c e weighing thousands of pounds each f l oa t e d away i n t he
c hi l l y bay. It was Al aska, t he st orybook r e a l i t y of a spl endor far beyond t he t hi ngs
I ' d r ead and t he t a l e s I ' d heard.
It only came t o be t h a t I was occupying this space at t h i s time by chance. A phone
call s ever al days before from my f r i e nds who l i v e here set t he stage f o r a n event t o t op
a l l t hose t h a t had been experi enced pr i or . They had t ol d me cf a r ace, t he di s t ance they
wer en' t s ur e of , t aki ng pl ace t he first day of my planned v i s i t . I was very i nt e r e s t e d,
of course, as l ong as it uas not a f u l l marathon at slx thousand f oot el evat i on. They
assur ed me it wasn' t and I was exci t ed.
It was Juneau, Alaska, Jul y 31, 1982; t he last day I would ever be 34 year s ol d.
I was t he f i r s t one at r e gi s t r a t i on by at l e a s t twenty minutes. It va s n' t s o much t h a t
I Ms t h a t e a r l y, es peci al l y by California r ace st andar ds, but t h a t everyone e l s e (al l
f i f t y of them) showed up onl y a few minutes before t he start. I was t o f i nd out soon
enough t ha t one does not r ush t hi ngs here. With a g l a c i e r that moves perhaps two or
t hr ee f e e t a year as a backyard it was al l e a s i l y understood.
The start of t he 1982 ver s i on of t he Juneau Marathon and Half Marathon (t hank God)
uas wi t hi n t he boundari es of a nat i onal f or e s t , more s pe c i f i c a l l y t he v i s i t o r ' s cent er
parlcing l o t overlooking t he gl aci er . I had not gi ven much t hought t o t he a c t ua l r ace
l i k e I usual l y do caused mainly t o t he many di ver s i ons around me -- new f aces , count r ysi de,
e t c . The pl an, i f t her e uas one, wa$o run a pace t h a t f e l t comfortable and i f I f e l t
good it would be a hard workout. Could I win? Well, any time you e nt e r a r a c e , t heore-
t i c a l l y , you have t he pot e nt i a l t o win. I t j u s t depends on who e l s e is- or i s n ' t t her e.
A l l t he familiar f a c e s I ' d never s een before. A l l t he s wi f t l ooki ng anat omi es, t he l i f e
s t y l e s of people j us t l i k e t hose back home, were around me.
Pre r ace i ns t r uc t i ons were l i k e t he expl anat i ons of t he s a f e t y equipment aboard a n
a i r c r a f t upon t ake o f f , pr e t t y bas i c and heard many t i mes before. But t he course map
was i nt e r e s t i ng because it r epr esent ed roads I ' d never been on bef or e, pl aces I ' d never
seen. I wasn' t worri ed about which way t o go s i nce I ' d j u s t f ol l ow whomever was i n f r ont
of me l i k e any ot her race. And s o t he s t a r t i n g gun went of f and away we went.
Now I might say with confidence t h a t t he hal f marathon di s t ance is by no means a
ki cker s r ace nor i s it a r ace one can throw caut i on t o t he wind and l i c ke t y- s pl i t t he
first t e n ki l omet er s and t hen hope t o hang on t he rest of t he way. Good i nt e nt i ons l ook
qui t e di f f e r e nt when you are slow-poking it al ong t he s i de of t he road wi t h . ye t anot her
two or t hr ee mi l es t o go. So I went out at 5:23 f o r t he first mi l e and immediately
wondered about t he s i z e of t he h i l l s l a t e r on down t he road. A t two mi l es I s e t t l e d i n t o
a s o r t of rhythm (white boys got rhythm t oo) i n f our t h pl ace. I f t he t hr ee i n f r ont
were going t o r un t he whole r ace at t he cur r ent pace ( t hey were about 25 yar ds ahead)
t her e wasn' t much I could do about it. But at $ mi l es i n t o it I caught t h e i r dog which
seemed t o be burdened somewhat by some excess body fat . Shor t l y a f t e r t he dog came t he
t h i r d pl ace runner who I found out af t er war ds r an t he e n t i r e marathon i n an out st andi ng
2:30:57. The first and second pl ace r unner s who had been runni ng t oget her came back t o
me j us t before 3 mi l es and t he first h i l l . I deci ded t o r un wi t h them f o r awhi l e except
t h a t t h e i r dog had caught up and w a s beginning t o g e t under f oot . So I pol i t e l y asked
which way we t urned of f t h i s road t r yi ng t o use my most cont r ol l ed aer obi c voi ce. They
s a i d t o fol l ow t he two l ead bi kes which I hadn' t not i ced a hundred o r s o yar ds ahead.
Af t er that I was on my own.
During r a c e s I t a l k t o mysel f, t r yi ng t o const ant l y i n s t i l l pos i t i ve t hi nki ng.
-,
Usually i t ' s al ong t he l i n e s of " Let ' s s ee i f we can cat ch up t o t he r unner ahead" o r
"The l e gs f e e l a l r i g h t s o I guess t he weight t r a i ni ng was r i ght " . But bei ng i n t he

I di dn' t f e e l s o much l i k e t he e l i t e runner a f t e r 10 mi l es. I was still running

The thought of sl owi ng down some began t o e nt e r my mind more t han once, es peci al l y

considered it f o r t he last three mi l es u n t i l t her e was no deci si on t o be made.
The course ended i n as beaut i f ul a s pot as it had begun. Although t he last t hr ee
