Nestled in the womb of the green and luscious Western Ghats is a
small hill station known as Amboli. it is a heaven, a heaven in the
Ghats. A heaven not only for us but for magnicent creatures,
creatures you wont nd anywhere else.
Amboli lies close to the town of Sawantwadi in the Sindhdurg
district. Not so long ago, Amboli served as a check post for the
British,Remnants of the raj still visible today in the village, the old
summer palace covered in moss and crumbling to the ground.
In just 10 sq.km, Amboli boasts of one of the richest and diverse
lesser fauna in the whole country, the species of reptiles and
amphibians found here have led it to be known as one of the worlds
Eco Hot Spots.
Amboli is a true herpetologists delight, not only can you nd a vast
array of snake species but also a wide range of reptiles and
Amphibians. There are mammal spottings too, most recently a
leopard and sloth bear. The birds too are a delight to spot, especially
the glorious Malabar Hornbill.
A visit and a night trail in Amboli are experiences one wont ever
forget in their lifetimes. Its beauty as many will concur lies in the
rough terrain and extreme climate Amboli has to offer, not to forget
the splendid views kavlesad point shows of the entire Amboli Ghat in
all its glory - waterfalls, pockets of clouds and deep green valleys!
only a few words come close to describing Amboli, the one that we
choose at all times is Amazing.

CONSERVATION TOUR FOR STUDENTS/COLLEGES - ITINERARY
DAY ONE DAY TWO DAY THREE
We arrive at sawantwadi by around 10am local
time, Traveller buses or taveras takes us rst for a
sumptuous lunch either Veg or Non-Veg, after
which we head directly to Reddy and Shiroda
beaches. A beautiful costal area, the beaches
provide livelihood to the villages settled next to it.
Students are encouraged to gather and collect
shells for identication later on, lots of shing
vessels, nets and shery industry related items can
be seen and learnt about.
As the sun sets on the
gorgeous beach, we head up
into the ghats, as the fog
thickens and the rains
increase.The ride through the
ghats is an breath-taking experien-
ce, with views of the valley and waterfalls on the
sides.
We reach by late evening to Amboli and check into
our hotel, after freshening up and good dinner
prepared by locals, a small introductory session is
conducted between the students and experts, a
few tips for the trails are given, and then we head
out into the night armed with torches in the jungles
of Amboli.
We start at 6.30 in the morning, to be ready by 7am
after breakfast and head for a trek to parikshit
point. A small round is take in the garden looking for
smaller toads such as the amboli toad and snakes
like the Bombay shield tail, and also learn about
medicinal plants. We take the route from the
garden and hike towards parikshit point, trying to
spot for other species of snakes, birds, and insects.
Caecilians too are spotted, while pit vipers and vine
snakes are found on treetops and if lucky the king
cobra in leaf mounts. The trek to parikshit can be
grueling and fun, and involves lots of leeches, tall
grass but the view from the top is worth it all.
Coming back down by an easier route we head
back to the village for a quick lunch and head to the
old king's summer palace to look for more reptiles.
In the evening a small workshop about wildlife
photography and herpetology will be conducted by
our experts, and basics of snake identication and
snake bite protocol will be taught too.
The following night after dinner, we head into the
jungles through a different route and conduct a
longer night trail; sambhar deers and civets can be
spotted in some areas. While bioluminescent fungi
are a spectacle to behold.
Early morning at 8 after breakfast we leave for
Kavlesad point to take in the valley sights and then
visit the Hiranyakeshi temple, followed by the
nangartas waterfall after which we come back to
Mahadeogad point.
A brief interactive session at Mahadeogad
(Provided if only light rains) and we come back to
the hotel for lunch, a nal session of thanks and
review of what we have learnt and seen and we
leave for Sawantwadi station by 2.00pm.
