Short description of chosen three major accomplishments mentioning the purpose, results, skills
acquired, and derived applications.
(1) The original method for optimisation of computer generated holograms (CGH). Purpose:
development of the fast, opto-electronic method for image recognition with the use of computer
generated hologram playing the role of optical feature extractor and ANN used as a classifier. Results:
masks of CGHs optimised with the use of hybrid evolutionary - rough sets based method. Skills
acquired: digital holography, programming, rough sets, evolutionary algorithms, neural networks,
pattern recognition. Derived applications: system for subsurface stress detection in composite
materials, system for microscopic suspension images recognition, fiberscope based system for engine
wear inspection, airplane engine monitoring system, system for recognition of the type of road
vehicles, and system recognition of the road obstacles in a fog.
(2) The generalization of indiscernibility relation in the theory of rough sets. Purpose:
overcoming the drawbacks of classical rough set theory for applications defined in continuous
multidimensional spaces. Results: generalised indiscernibility relation based on cluster analysis and
structuring set of conditional attributes. This is generalisation of both, classical rough sets, and rough
sets with variable precision, especially useful for large data sets. Skills acquired: rough sets
extensions, cluster analysis, information systems, granular knowledge processing. Derived
applications: enhanced system for subsurface stress detection in composite materials, system for
classification of Fraunhofer diffraction patterns, studies concerning further modifications of classical
theory of rough sets and its derivations leading to the concept of quasi-dominant rough sets (QDRSA)
(3) The software for estimating coalescence distributions in Galton-Watson branching
processes. Purpose: verification of the robustness of mitochondrial Eve (mtEve) dating. Results:
simulations using the software confirmed relatively fast convergence to limiting OConnells theorems
for slightly supercritical branching processes and robustness of mtEve dating in the Wright-Fisher
model (results are published in a paper accepted to Theor. Pop. Biol., IF 2.2). Skills acquired:
computer simulations, coalescent method, Markov branching processes, random number generators,
human evolution, Wright-Fisher model, OConnell theory. Derived applications: preliminary
assessment of interactions of the Upper Palaeolithic anatomically modern humans and Neanderthals.
B3.3 Independent thinking and leadership qualities
Activities reflecting fellows initiative, independent thinking, project management skill, and
leadership, include:
(1) Establishing the software company Polstage Ltd (2000). Krzysztof Cyran together with
Jerzy Siedlaczek from Rybnik, Poland and Andrew Kocher from Vienna, Austria has initiated the
enterprise Polstage Ltd. supporting dynamic career building for outstanding computer science graduate
students and alumni from Silesian University of Technology, where he was at that time a research and
teacher assistant.
(2) Managing Polstage Ltd (2000-2003). After successful start of the company, Krzysztof
Cyran became the Managing Director and Director for Development of Polstage, being at the same
time full-time University Assistant Professor. He managed large software projects mainly for German
(Hagen & Partners GmbH) and Austrian (Webcraft and Integriertes Ressources-Management AG)
companies which ultimately led to long-term cooperation between these companies and Polstage
(having at that time about 20 programmers) Two of former Polstage employees, hired and managed by
the fellow, in 2004 set up LGBS Poland, a Polish branch of Austrian-Polish company (currently
Krzysztof Cyran is the Head of Research Department in LGBS Ltd.). Both these companies would
never come to existence without leadership skills and independent thinking of the fellow, who
successfully supported cooperation in IT technology on European market, seeing in such cooperation a
great potential for future European industrial sector.
(3) vice Head of the Institute of Informatics at SUT (2006 present). In 2006 Krzysztof
Cyran became the vice Head of the Institute of Informatics at SUT. He is the person responsible for
adaptation of programs of computer science studies carried out at SUT to Bologna process launched to
create the European higher education area (EHEA) by making academic degree standards and quality
assurance standards more comparable and compatible throughout Europe, in particular under the
Lisbon Recognition Convention. In 2010, during the Accreditation procedures, the Polish National
Accreditation Commission (NAC) considered the authors original programs of computers science
studies in SUT, that the fellow is directly responsible for, as excellent (grade 5 in a 1-5 scale) The
fellows experience is also implemented in strategies of the scientific development of the Institute of
Informatics (the scientific potential of the Institute was also considered by NAC as excellent), which is
supported by Krzysztof Cyran as the vice Head, and the researcher who actively takes part in various
funded projects (as a coordinator or an investigator).
(4) Organiser and Director of the post-graduate studies Teleinformatics in Aviation (2008
present). In 2008 he participated in the initiative of Polish Ministry of Transport, Upper-Silesian
Aviation Association and SUT for creation of the Civil Aviation Personnel Education Centre of
Central and Eastern Europe (CAPECCEE) in Gliwice, Poland. As a vice Head of Institute of
Informatics he involved the Institute in the process by preparation and launching first edition of post-
graduate studies Teleinformatics in Aviation. He became also the Director of these studies
responsible for both program and implementation of student activities organised partially at
International Airport in Katowice, where students have opportunity of entering pilot cabins and learn
real teleinformatics devices onboard. His initiative led also to the set up of the funded by EU and
exceptional in Poland Virtual Flying Laboratory equipped with professional cockpit-simulators
integrated in a common virtual sky.
(5) Coordinator of all post-graduate studies carried out in CAPECCEE (June 2009
present). As a result of appreciation of fellows contribution, the Head of CAPECEE, Prof. Fellner
and President of the Scientific and Programme Council of this organisation, former State Secretary in
the Polish Ministry of Transport, Dr. Wrobel have nominated the fellow to became the Coordinator of
all post-graduate studies organised by the Centre. These include studies implemented in cooperation
with Faculty of Architecture, Faculty of Transport, and Faculty of Automatic Control, Electronics and
Computer Science.
(6) Head of the Research Department in LGBS Ltd (2010 present) After helping in the
development of the LGBS as a Development Consultant, when this software SME has grown to more
than 100 programmers, Krzysztof Cyran has organized the Research Department within this company
and became the Head of this department. By a close cooperation with SUT, the department is expected
to commercialise innovations in computer science with plans for extending the scope to bioinformatics
research, driven by the ArSInformatiCa project results and further cooperation with SUT and Institute
of Oncology in Gliwice.
