Section 1 Actors Prepare from Portrait of a Stratford Year
The actors are come hither. Over weeks
Rehearsals root and texts unfold their tales,
Until the town begins to witness signs
That tell the opening night is close at hand.
The entrance to the stage is cluttered up
With curious chunks of castle walls and thrones;
And tucked away in whirring attic rooms
The wardrobe ladies burn the midnight oil;
Pallid directors hurry through the streets;
And in the Dirty Duck* young actors sit * a pub near the theatre, popular with actors
Word-perfect with their twenty lines, and pray
This meagre lot will not be cut to ten;
They never know the troubles of the star,
Watching the river from his dressing room,
Who cant remember lines and wonders how
Hell ever triumph on that daunting stage.
