MORE GOOD THAN BAD

They might not get the biggest headlines, but most stories
highlight the positive advances in the oil and gas industry
By Cory Dellenbach

I
Cory Dellenbach

ts been a mixed bag of news in the oil

and gas industry recently, but Ill start
with the good.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics
job numbers for the first quarter of 2014
show promising news for the industry.
The first figure that stands out is the 7,000
jobs created in support activities for oil and
gas, which is up from 4,500 over the same
period last year. Of those 7,000 jobs, 3,300
were created in March alone.
In oil and gas extraction, 4,200
positions were created through March.
Thats 1,700 positions more than the same

There are plenty of opportunities
for women in the oilfields from mud
engineers to truck drivers and everything
in between. Its just a matter of getting
the right training, working hard and
proving yourself.
While GOMC highlights the positive
advances in the oil and gas industry, its
no secret that accidents sometimes cast
a shadow. Two accidents that happened

period last year. The bureau also reports
that 400 oil and gas extraction jobs were
created in April.
In total, there were 10,800 jobs
created in the oil and gas industry in the
first quarter of 2014.
One thing that jumped out at me
when reviewing the numbers was the fact
that only 500 of the 10,800 oil and gas jobs
created in the first quarter were filled by
women compared to 2,000 of 6,300 in the
first quarter of 2013.
In this issue of Gas, Oil and Mining
Contractor youll read about three women
who found work in the oil and gas industry
and havent looked back.
These women are working side-byside with men, and while they say there

safety training and the need to improve rail

transport safety.
Early that morning, two men were
killed and nine more injured following an
explosion at a drill site in Orla, Texas. The
nine workers injured suffered only minor
cuts, lacerations and bruising from shrapnel,
but two men lost their lives in the explosion.

The Loving County Sheriffs Department

said there were as many as 15 people on site
at the time of the explosion. According to the
sheriffs department, workers for RKI (the
company operating the site) were putting
in a wellhead and the pressure line built up,
resulting in a pressure explosion.
Later the same day, a CSX Corp. train
carrying crude oil from the Bakken region
derailed and burst into flames in downtown
Lynchburg, Va., spilling oil into the James
River and forcing hundreds to evacuate.
CSX said 15 cars derailed and fire erupted
on three of them. There were no injuries
reported, thankfully.
News like this can give the industry a
black eye. Accidents happen, but most of
the time theyre preventable if proper safety
measures are followed. Everyone in this
industry is responsible for improving safety
and making sure these types of accidents
dont happen.
And not all the news is bad. Many
companies reported strong profits following
the first quarter of 2014, and oil production
in the Bakken region has reached 1 billion
barrels. You can see more news updates in
our GOM Pipelines feature in this issue
of GOMC.
Also in this issue, we profile BeneTerra,
a company thats using its own technology
to help with water recycling and reuse. The
company, which was formed in 2002, has
found a new more efficient way to recycle
oil and gas wastewater using flare gas to
generate steam. The water is returned to
the atmosphere rather than a disposal well
thousands of feet below ground.
I hope you can take something from
each of these stories and use it to better your
own business. GOMC

RULES & REGS

Job Market Wavers

Oilfield workers are worried about job stability. As they should be. A
recently proposed regulation aims to cut carbon dioxide emissions
by up to 30 percent by the year 2030, but more regulation could stall
the oil and gas industry and ultimately hurt the job market. Could too
much government regulation spell big trouble for oilfield jobs? Is the
federal government over-regulating? Read on to learn the details, and
then let us know your thoughts. www.gomcmag.com/featured

Solutions
BeneTerra uses a variety of environmentally friendly
technologies to reuse and recycle oil and gas wastewater
By Cory Dellenbach

inding ways to reuse and recycle water is becoming increasingly

important in the oil and gas industry, and BeneTerra is doing
something about it with several existing and new technologies.
We provide water and land management solutions
for our clients, which enable them to focus on their core
business, says Derek Lowe, operations manager for BeneTerra.
We do everything from large-scale water projects on 600 acres to plugging and
abandoning a monitoring well, or installing a monitoring well for a client.
BeneTerra was formed in 2002 with the purpose of enabling the beneficial
use of wastewater. Since then most of the companys efforts have been related to
water and land management for the oil and gas industry.
While BeneTerra offers a wide range of services for producers, including overall
land management, soils investigation, remediation, reclamation, environmental
monitoring and regulatory compliance, the companys core mission remains the
same to develop beneficial reuse solutions for wastewater streams.
One of the things that sets us apart is that we provide solutions with boots
on the ground and the practical hands-on help our clients need to get the job
done, says Lesley Pearson, controller for BeneTerra. We dont simply offer the

solution and walk away. We share solutions, find out which one is going to meet
our customers needs the best way, and then we use our team to employ that
solution for them and operate it on an ongoing basis.

Pearson adds.
BeneTerras main office is in Sheridan, Wyo.,
but the company also has a secondary facility
in Australia. In the U.S., the company meets
geographic location needs on a case-by-case basis

ROOTS ON THE FARM

BeneTerra has deep agriculture roots that
start with the founders of the company.
We have a deep background in agriculture
amongst our team and our owner group that
came from Kansas. Weve also done a number
of agricultural wastewater projects in Kansas
and Wyoming, says Adam Zimmer, business
development manager for BeneTerra.
Lowe adds that the agriculture background
is the foundation of the companys stewardship
approach to providing practical and innovative
solutions. We help our clients focus on
sustainable development that will ultimately take
care of water and land. Thats the principle of
agricultural roots. If you take care of the land and
water today, they will in turn take care of future
generations and are often more economically
viable. Thats one of our key priorities.
The agriculture background also benefits
BeneTerra and its relationship with the
landowners it serves.
We listen to and understand what
their challenges are, and then we work with
the client and the landowner to develop the
best-fit solution for their current challenge,
Zimmer says.

Adam Zimmer
EVAPORATION TECHNOLOGY
BeneTerra is pioneering technology intended to serve as an environmentally
friendly alternative to conventional handling of wastewater created as a
byproduct of oil and gas production.
The company has modified existing evaporation technology to cater to the
unique operational locations of oil and gas well pads.
When we started, the primary technology that we used was subsurface

drip irrigation for beneficially reusing produced water, for which we have a
process patent, Lowe says. Subsurface drip irrigation is not a new technology,
we just repurposed it for the oil and gas industry and the needs of our clients
in the Powder River Basin.
Recently, BeneTerra has also developed a new submerged combustion
evaporation technology called BeneVap Systems.
This unit takes produced water wastewater that is developed as part
of the oil and gas life cycle evaporates it and releases clean steam into the
atmosphere to reduce the overall wastewater volume by up to 97 percent,
Lowe says. BeneVap Systems greatly decrease all associated services needed
for an oil well, such as the trucking of water to a disposal well, the wear and
tear on the infrastructure and the emissions that are being created by the trucks
and the flaring of the gas.
Zimmer notes that the company is utilizing flare gas as the fuel source to
evaporate the water.

With our strong science and innovation background, were confident we will continue to find new solutions and develop
new technologies to meet the changing demands and needs of the oil and gas industry.
Adam Zimmer
The BV300 which is what the unit is called comes in part from intellectual
property acquired by BeneTerra from New Mexico-based Evaporative Systems in
late 2013, and a unit designed and tested by BeneTerras Australia team.
Evaporative Systems has used a similar wastewater disposal system
for various projects, including landfills and food processing, for more than a
decade. However, BeneTerra retooled the technology for
application in the energy industry.
Lowe is pleased with the results so far. He says the
first unit, which combines the best of both companies,

is already being tested at a site near their headquarters. The first pilot for the unit
is right here in Sheridan, on a dewatering project for a client that has a brine pit
that needs to be dewatered. BeneTerras BV300 has not only been an economic
solution, but an excellent environmental solution too.
The BV300 consists of an encased heating unit mounted on an 8.5- by

23-foot skid, with accessory pipes. The system

was designed to sit in close proximity to a well
site and can process up to 300 barrels of water
per day. It can also operate on an alternative fuel
source if adequate flare gas is unavailable.
Stranded assets are the best fit for
the BV300 remote wells located several
miles from transmission infrastructure and
disposal facilities, Zimmer says. The potential
environmental benefits can be huge in
those cases.
By evaporating the water and putting it
into the atmosphere, youre truly putting it
back into the water cycle. If you inject it into a
disposal well, its gone, Zimmer says. There
are currently no technologies that will pump
that water back to the surface and utilize it. If
its released into the atmosphere as pure steam,
plants, animals and people are able to use it.
AGGRESSIVE PLANS
One of the things Pearson, Lowe and
Zimmer have all noticed throughout the life
cycle of BeneTerra is that the oil and gas sector is
a volatile market, and service providers have to
be able to remain stable through the same ebbs
and flows.
As a solution provider, you have to be
ready to adapt to the changes in the market,
especially as they impact your clients, Pearson
says. As our clients plans change, we adapt our
solutions to fit, and thats not just specific to oil
and gas.

BUILDING A STRONG TEAM

BeneTerras management team of Adam Zimmer, Derek Lowe and
Lesley Pearson oversees a small but talented staff of full-time soil scientists,
water specialists and agronomists.
We are very heavily science-based and our people have specific
technical expertise along with scientific and agricultural backgrounds, says
Pearson, BeneTerras controller.
BeneTerra is a partnership of three agribusiness organizations,
including Agronomy Solutions, BT Water and NV Yutaka.
NV Yutaka is owned by a brother-sister team who are third generation
farmers and ranchers. For over 20 years they have been partners in
managing a large wastewater recycling project where they annually reuse
more than 1.6 billion gallons of municipal and industrial wastewater for
crop production activities.
BT Water is an investment entity owned by a group of professionals who
have been owners in a service firm that has provided consulting services to

16

agribusiness and other industries throughout the U.S. for 80 years.

Agronomy Solutions provides agronomic and soil science consulting
services. The company has substantial experience with wastewater reuse
and assists in the design and maintenance of effluent irrigation projects
where reclaimed water is applied to golf courses, sports fields, parks
and farmland.
Zimmer, Lowe and Pearson report to the companys board of directors,
which is elected annually by the ownership group.
Most of the companys staff is directly involved with the troubleshooting
and maintenance of its projects as well as regular operations.
Our people are really what distinguish us, Lowe says. Were not large
in terms of numbers, but were big when it comes to quality. From our
owners to our entire team, we have really good people with a common goal
of environmental stewardship and finding beneficial use solutions to many
of the issues the industries we serve deal with every day.

Bob McKeown found he could service customers with one machine

a PACS 1000 vacuum system, made by Elastec/American Marine instead of
two, the decision was a no-brainer.

The versatile PACS unit (PACS stands for Portable Air Conveyance Vacuum

tank is large enough to handle most of the jobs performed
by the company, based in Perryopolis, Pa.
We tow it with a dually Chevrolet pickup truck,
McKeown explains. Its very compact [about 18 1/2
feet long and 6,000 pounds] and has everything we need
in just one unit. It provides us with a lot more flexibility,
and since its not as large as a vacuum truck, its easy to
maneuver in tight spaces.
We looked at other units and have used other
[similar] equipment on locations, but most of them
didnt have a pressure washer, he continues. So by
having one on a vacuum unit, we dont have to bring
along an extra truck, which saves us all kinds of time and
aggravation, not to mention fuel.
Plus, when you bring along two pieces of
equipment, you basically have to bring along diesel power
for vacuum and diesel power for pressure washing, plus
you have to haul water separately, he adds. The PACS
unit has its own 135-gallon freshwater saddle tank.
McKeown established Keystone three years ago.
The company rents and sells gas-field equipment and
provides roustabout services. It also provides services
such as pumping, filtering and transferring water and
sludge. The company serves customers within about
a 200-mile radius of Perryopolis in the Marcellus
Shale play.

The company owns five PACS 1000 units. Each unit features a 25 hp
diesel engine; a water-cooled Jurop vane pump; a 36-inch-diameter rear door;
a 45-degree tilt bed; a tandem-axle trailer (16,000 pounds gross vehicle weight
limit); and a 6-inch discharge valve.
McKeown generally uses the unit to vacuum up water and mud on drilling
sites; spills of all kinds; and transferring liquids and sludge from, say, a pit or
tank to a storage pit.
The multitasking unit also saves McKeown time by dramatically reducing
the amount of equipment setup and breakdown time.
It also reduces the risk of injury because no one has
to lift and carry a pressure washer separately. So
you save about an hour of setup time, and you dont

have to worry about injuries that can occur when

employees carry something heavy, he notes. We can
set it up in half an hour and be ready to work. If we
used two separate units, it would probably take about
an hour and a half to set things up.
That may not sound like a huge advantage, but
over the course of a year, the time savings add up. As
McKeown puts it: Youre either winning or losing,
and everyone is looking for an advantage. Everyone
is looking for savings and ways to do things more
efficiently.
McKeown also lauds the PACS 1000 for its
reliability, a critical factor in the fast-paced world of
gas and oilfield services where downtime can cost
customers tens of thousands of dollars per hour in
lost production. He says the units are real workhorses
that perform well, often in difficult environments and
terrain. In fact, hes so pleased with the units that hes
considering ordering a couple more this year.

says. We decided it was lucrative enough,
so we ordered a pretty good selection of
inventory including antennas, amplifiers
and cables. That was what got us started.
Now, two years later, the company
has grown substantially with new products
and accessories specifically
suited for the oilfields.

Dave Ludwig
s Dave Ludwig recovered from
back surgery in 2012 he knew he
had to find a different career path.
His music business just wasnt cutting it
anymore, and his back had paid the price.
I needed to find something a little
less destructive for me to do, Ludwig says.
Lifting heavy speaker equipment gets

old, so my brother made a remark about

cellphone boosters and cellphone signals in
the oilfields.
One thing led to another and soon
Ludwig was operating Bakken Electronix,
offering cellphone boosters to those
working in the oilfields of North Dakota.
I found a company called Wilson
Electronics and told them who I was, that I
was 21 years old, and we got hooked up and
got things started, Ludwig says. They sold
me one unit at the beginning, I tested it out
and by golly it worked great.
Ludwig ordered a couple more boosters
and started his new business in mid-2012.
He told his friends, who told their friends,
and began handing out business cards.

This has been a growing concept as

I went along. Ultimately, at the end of the
day, Bakken Electronix is a communication
solutions company, Ludwig says. Its not
that we want to sell you a product, we want
to find you the right product and the right
service and pair you up with that.
Of the products Bakken Electronix
now offers, Ludwig says one of the most
popular has been OilTrax USA oilfield
navigation software from SiteFinder GPS.
OilTrax USA is a Garmin-based system
that allows individuals to search, select and
drive to well sites anywhere in the country.
Its software that works on a Garmin,
Ludwig says. Insert an SD card and you
have turn-by-turn directions to any well
site. Its only $200, which might seem like
a lot, but when youre a driver and youre
being paid by the barrel, going to multiple
well sites at night, it can be dangerous using
paper directions. With this you can listen
for your turns, glance at the screen on your
Garmin and be a lot safer.
Another popular product has been the
satellite asset tracking devices from RHx
Systems, based out of Sioux Falls, S.D.
I heard an ad on the radio here that
$65,000 worth of equipment had been

stolen from the oilfields, and they were offering a very sizeable reward, Ludwig
says. I went in search of something to track assets so if someone steals it, you
could track its location. We found RHx, and thats what they specialize in.
With satellite asset tracking, customers can also recall deliveries, record
IFTA mileage and track equipment maintenance.
Ludwigs newest offerings include communication vehicles outfitted with
equipment from Nomad Global Communication Solutions. There are multiple
vehicle platforms, from standard trucks to Suburbans to semi-sized vehicles.
Trailer-mounted units are also available.
The oilfield is not paper and pencil anymore, Ludwig says. Everyone
needs to be connected as companies want to know every detail about a well
pad. These solutions have cellular Internet capabilities, satellite Internet
capabilities, MESH network capabilities and technology designed specifically
for emergency services. What drew me to them were the turnkey solutions that
can be implemented in a matter of minutes.
Ludwig, 24, doesnt have any employees on payroll, but his dad does help
at their home office in Williston, N.D. In the future he would like to see the
company grow and add employees.
I want to move into a nice storefront with a receptionist, repair department
and possibly rental department, Ludwig says. Controlled growth is key in
my mind.
Ludwig has enjoyed seeing Williston grow the last several years thanks
to the oil boom.
Ive been out here my whole life. I grew up out here and to see Williston
revitalized into a healthy economy is nice, Ludwig says. It got pretty slow,
pretty stale for a while, but now that growth is here, Im happy to have it and
happy to have new people in town. GOMC

Product Focus

Dewatering/
Separation
Equipment,
Water Management
By Craig Mandli

Dewatering and separation equipment plays a vital role

in the reuse of water in gas, oil and mining operations. The
equipment below includes centrifuges, slurry separation
equipment, filtration equipment and polymer systems
designed to help separate waste from valuable water.

Centrifuges
1. Decanter centrifuge
LYNX drilling mud decanter centrifuges
from Alfa Laval remove unwanted solids and fine
particles from virtually all kinds of used drilling
mud, including those based on water/synthetics
and conventional oil-based drilling fluids. It
removes the vast majority of fine particles down
to sizes of around 5 microns. Less mud is wasted,
and removing solids in very dry form also leads
to lower costs for transporting and disposing of
waste. Additional savings stem from opportunities
for automatic, unattended operation. Units have
been designed for reduced power consumption
in relation with process flow. A variety of sizes are
available, with solids capacity from 11,000 up to
154,000 pounds per hour. 866/253-2528; www.
alfalaval.us.

2. Thickening centrifuge
The THK thickening centrifuge from
Centrisys is designed to thicken waste-activated
sludge without polymer. The system produces up
to 8 percent cake solids running at flow rates of
up to 1,000 gpm. Applications include secondary
sludge, primary sludge, oxidation ditch sludge,
digested sludge and MBR sludge. 877/339-5496;
www.centrisys.us.

3. Horizontal
sludge-dewatering system
The horizontal sludge-dewatering system from
In The Round Dewatering has a stainless steel

drum with perforated plastic tile lining. The drum is

mounted on a roll-off frame for easy transportation
and unloading. Water trays have been configured
to allow for containment of discharge water. A
typical batch of sludge consisting of 18,000 to
25,000 gallons is mixed with polymer before being
filtered in the rotating drum. The drum is driven by
a 1/2 hp variable-speed electric motor with a heavyduty chain and sprocket. The turning eliminates
crusting and wet pockets, producing uniform,
consistent results. The dewatered material dumps
easily, and the drum is self-cleaning. The sludge is
ready for disposal after one night. 317/539-7304;
www.itrdewatering.com.

PHOENIX Process Equipment is used for

washing and dewatering frac sand, providing over
99 percent solids recovery, even from dilute slurries
such as dredger spoils. Dewatered solids are readily
conveyable and stackable, having considerably
lower residual moistures than dewatering screws.
Capacities up to 17,500 gpm and solids throughputs
up to 1,760 short tons per hour are achievable on
a single machine. The wheel is equipped with
multiple buckets, and slotted elastomer sieve mats
are bolted into the bucket bottoms providing
consistent drainage area. Siphon pipes are mounted
beneath the buckets, withdrawing water from the
sand cake as the bucket lifts from the slurry bath.
502/499-6198; www.dewater.com.

4. Centrifugal separator
The centrifugal action separator from LAKOS
removes sand or grit from water or oil, protecting
pumps, valves, tanks and piping from abrasive
solids. The centrifugal action has no moving parts
to wear out or replace. It can be used as primary
filtration for desanding, which extends operating
cycles and protects other equipment. It can be
used as secondary recovery, which protects highpressure pumps and finer filters used in waterflood
injection techniques. It can also be used in
produced water, removing sand prior to reinjection
or disposal, or to protect downhole applications,
extending the life of production well PCP and ESP
pumps. 800/344-7205; www.lakos.com.

5. Frac sand
washing/dewatering unit
The KISA/PHOENIX Bucket Wheel from

Belt Presses
6. Belt filter press
Belt filter presses from Bright Technologies
are constructed of 304 stainless steel with a radius
wedge and high performance drainage roll that
allow for high throughput rates and increased
total solids output. A pneumatic steering and
tensioning system integrate a high degree of safety
and ease of operation and control of the unit. The
turnkey system allows for ease of installation along
with operator-friendly controls. The PLC coupled
with touch-screen controls easily integrate into
new and existing wastewater treatment facility
SCADA control systems. 800/253-0532; www.

Slurry Separation Equipment

Shakers

7. Single-shaft macerator

9. Shaker material removal system

The Rotorrake compact, non-clogging, singleshaft macerator from Boerger grinds very coarse
solids and stringy material for the protection of
downstream equipment. It incorporates reversibleflow direction and extraction of hard substances
with throughput volumes of up to 4,000 gpm.
Solids-laden liquids are fed through angled
counter blades, which capture and chop the solids.
Macerated solids continue to flow with the liquid,
and foreign materials accumulate in the debris
collector. It can be used as a stand-alone machine
or with a pump or other peripheral machines.
844/263-7437; www.boerger.com.

The Total Clean System from DEL Tank

& Filtration Systems processes drilling waste,
taking the initial flow directly from the trucks,
tanks or pits and pumping it over the scalping
shaker where all the oversize debris, usually 8 to 10
mesh material, is removed. The remaining slurry
is then pumped to the primary hydrocyclone/
shaker units, where typically the sand fraction,
+74 microns, is removed. Any solids remaining
in the primary hydrocyclone overflow and screen
underflow then flow through the tilted plate
baffle section of the V-Tank. The remaining solids
settle and are conveyed to the pump suction of
the recycle pumps by the shaftless auger, then
through additional sets of recycle hydrocyclone/
shaker units for additional removal, down to +37
microns in some cases. The effluent overflow
can then be treated with polymer and pumped
to a clarifier/thickener tank, where the remaining
solids will settle and the thickened underflow can
be pumped to centrifuges for final solids removal.
800/468-2657; www.deltank.com.

8. Industrial shredder
Monster Industrial Shredders from JWC
Environmental homogenize drill cuttings and
slurries so material is properly sized before it enters
dewatering systems. This makes dewatering more
efficient and protects the system from damage. The
dual-shafted grinder includes through-hardened
steel cutters, high-pressure seals, a removable
cutter cartridge and an auto-reversal feature. They
shred solids such as wood, rags, rocks and plastics.
800/331-2277; www.jwce.com.

Filtration Systems
10. Open-top roll-off dewatering unit
The ADS 30-yard open-top roll-off dewatering
unit from AQUA-Zyme Disposal Systems can
be filled with 22,000 to 25,000 gallons of liquid
waste at 1 to 2 percent solids in about two hours.

11

12

After draining 24 hours, the unit can be hauled to

a landfill or other permitted facility for disposal.
Sludge volume can be reduced by 80 percent, with
reductions to 98 percent in BOD, COD, FOG and
TSS. Effluent is clear and sewerable. The unit has
few moving parts and includes a roll-over tarp
system; side, floor and center screens; 1/4-inch
floor plate; seven-gauge side plates; four door
binder ratchets; eight drain ports; two inlet ports;
and a long-handle scraper. The average life span of
the unit is 12 to 14 years. It can be hauled with
a standard-capacity roll-off truck. Units are also
available in 15-yard sizes. 979/245-5656; www.
aqua-zyme.com.

11. Dewatering container

Roll-off dewatering containers from Bakers
Waste Equipment provide a one-step process for
dewatering all types of liquid waste, including
septic waste, grease sludge, grit, hazardous waste,
lagoon sludge, fly ash and more. Liquid waste is
pumped into the containers, allowing the liquids to
drain through filtered walls and floors. The liquid
is collected in a sump area behind the walls and
floors, staging it for discharge out one of the side
drain ports. 800/221-4153; www.bwe-nc.com.

12. Dissolved air treatment system

The Integrated Treatment System (ITS)
from Ecologix Environmental Systems prepares
flowback and produced water from fracking
operations for reuse. The dissolved air flotation
design on a mobile frac tank chassis grants rapid
deployment for an on-site or near-well operation.

dewatering very fine solids (often -325 mesh)
from wash water or industrial processes. Slurry
is pressure pumped into recessed chambers
wrapped in filter cloth. The resulting solids form
dry, easy-to-handle cakes that are discharged
from the bottom of the press. These cakes can be
transported via truck or conveyor belt, and the
water is recycled back to the process for reuse.
Units typically require no added polymers or
chemicals after the thickener, and no full-time
operator is needed. The automated units can be
monitored remotely from any computer. 814/6959807; www.mclanahan.com.

16. Rotary fan press

The slow revolution of the Prime Rotary
Fan Press from Prime Solution (1 to 2 rpm)
minimizes the energy required during operation.
Depending on the model, the system uses 0.75
to 13 hp. The waterjet design of the filter screen
minimizes blockage, reducing the amount of
wash water required. Operating the self-cleaning
feature once daily uses little wash water, resulting
in additional cost savings. It reduces energy use,
water consumption and hauling costs to minimize
carbon emissions. It offers easy and fast startup
and shutdown, and minimal operator attention.

Pressure increases as biosolids move slowly

through a tapered channel. Friction intensifies as
the material compresses against two rotating filter
screens. Filtrate drains through the screens. Cake
averages 18 to 24 percent solids and reaches up to
60 percent in some applications. 269/694-6666;

17. Drill-out operation wastewater filter

The Magic Tank System from Resirkulere
USA filters returned wastewater pumped by coil
and stick rig during drill-out operations for reuse,
while at the same time filtering and reclaiming a
substantial amount of additional clean oil that
would have normally been lost to disposal.
It reduces freshwater and fuel consumption,
transportation costs, solid waste and waste
disposal fees, and increases oil recovery. 701/8528029; www.resirkulere.com.

18. Dewatering container

Dewatering containers from Wastequip are
designed to reduce the cost of waste disposal by
separating liquids from solids. They are ideal for
wastewater treatment facilities, manufacturing
facilities, spill sites, construction sites, refineries
and mines. They have gasketed doors and are hydro
tested to ensure they will not leak. Disposable
liners and an easy-to-remove shell provide for a
quick cleanup. The removable shell also allows
the container to be used as a sludge container.
Containers can be custom-configured for specific
applications and are available in 20- and 25-cubicyard sizes. 877/468-9278; www.wastequip.com.

Dewatering / Separation Equipment,

Water Management
By Craig Mandli
SCRAPER SYSTEM ENABLES MINE TO REUSE WATER
Problem

Water recovery at a mine in northern Canada was practically impossible without clogging pumps,
valves and related processing equipment due to the presence of large solids. Loading was extremely high,
which made the use of manual basket strainers impractical due to very short cleaning intervals. The
operator was seeking a solution that could handle large, irregularly sized solids and resist the damage
from impact at high velocity inside the strainer during operation.

Solution

The mine installed two 12-inch Automatic Scraper Strainers from Acme Engineering Products,
capable of handling up to 3,500 gpm of flow. The scraper keeps the screen clean using aggressive brushes
that clean out the slots of the wedgewire screen. It uses line pressure to intermittently purge accumulated
solids. Maintenance is infrequent and requires the simple replacement of the scraper blade and brush.

Result

The mine is successfully dewatering and reusing its filtered mine water and has more uptime as a
result. Maintenance is also reduced on related equipment in the pumping system. 518/236-5659 www.
acmeprod.com.

SITE USES POLYMERS TO SEPARATE CUTTINGS

Problem

A mine in Colorado continuously dealt with sloppy cuttings that filled the location
pit too quickly, with poor fluid quality and high LGS returned to mud makeup. Zero
cuttings discharge was the desired outcome.

Solution

Kemira Chemicals uses high-quality polymers to flocculate water-based drilling fluids,

allowing the removal of low-gravity solids and other fines. It returns fluid to the drilling
process for rebuilding drilling mud on location, or for disposal when the job is completed.
It provides cuttings with a high solids content to meet zero discharge requirements on
multi-well pads. It relies on polymeric coagulants and/or flocculants to agglomerate the
solids, which are subsequently separated using mechanical devices such as centrifuges.

Result

The site was able to increase centrifuge solids from 21 to 58 percent with clean-water discharge across the variable mud conditions. Kemira worked with the
location engineer to trim the treatment for a lower, but acceptable, level of solids going to the pit (40 to 45 percent). Instead of producing clean water at this point,
beneficial solids were returned back to mud makeup, reducing the cost of both the treatment and makeup while allowing the location to still meet zero cuttings
discharge requirements. Treatment was increased to meet disposal requirements at the end of the job. 770/436-1542; www.kemira.com. GOMC

Eye on the Industry

SHAKING STEREOTYPES
A boom in oilfield employment opportunities has led more women to the industry
By Cory Dellenbach

amille Raymond, Amber Hunt and Pamela Bracken all know what its
like to work in a male-dominated world theyve worked in oilfields
across the country the last two to three years.
Its a boys club, Raymond says. Its kind of cliquish until you can prove
that you can do your job, especially when youre new and they know youre
new. They can see it on your face.
Raymond, a drilling fluid specialist for M-I SWACO, a Schlumberger
Company, has been working in the Bakken Shale play since 2011.
Its more commonly called a mud engineer and I primarily do drive-bys
taking care of multiple rigs, Raymond says.
During the drilling process, companies pump fluid down a borehole to
facilitate drilling. That fluid brings up the drill cuttings and creates a wall to
hold back the formation, which cools the bit and the motor.
What I do every day

formation, Hunt says. I run
a nitrogen pump most of the
time, so we do pipeline purges, chemical cleanings, refinery turnarounds
and pigging.
Bracken, a contract lease operator, has worked in oilfields in the Mississippi
Lime play for two years. I run gas lift plungers, service pumping units, write
gauge reports and check gauge tank batteries, she says.
WOMEN IN THE OILFIELDS
In the first quarter of 2013, nearly half of all new jobs in the oil and
gas industry went to women, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of
Labor Statistics.
Specifically, about 3,900 positions were added in the oil and gas sector

with about 1,800 of those filled

by women. Since 1991, when stats
in this area started being tracked,
there had never been a year where
more than a third of new hires in
the industry had been women
until 2013.
While there is a concerted
effort to recruit women into the
field, that number stands alone in
this recovery and only time will tell
if its sustainable, says Paul Caplan,
president of Rigzone.
Many of the filled positions are
not on oil rigs but are in offices as
technicians, geologists or engineers.

in the oilfields. Weve seen a lot
of women apply for positions and
theyre very, very qualified.
Raymond found herself in
the industry after working in an
environmental lab for eight years.
I was kind of, I dont want to
say burned out, but there wasnt
a whole lot of variation in it,
Raymond says. A friend told her
about a mud engineer job in the
oilfields, and she researched it.
I was kind of apprehensive
about being a woman in the oilfield,
so my friend put me in touch with a girl that is a mud engineer for our company,
and I talked to her about it and she sent my resume on up and thats how I got
here, Raymond says.
For Hunt and Bracken, the oil and gas industry provided a way to earn
some good cash. The oil and gas industry offers some of the highest salaries
compared to other energy sectors. The national average annual salary for oil and
gas exploration and production is $96,844, or about $47 an hour more than
double the average annual salary for all occupations, according to the American
Petroleum Institute.

The pay is great, the schedule is great because I work two weeks on and
then Im off for two weeks. The opportunity is wonderful. I have met so many
people and have visited so many places that I never expected to go.
While the women enjoy working in the male-dominated oil and gas
industry, they havent lost their feminine side.
I like being a girl and, on my days off, I like getting pedicures and
getting my hair done, Raymond says. You dont lose yourself working
around a bunch of guys you dont lose your femininity or your personality.
You hear a lot about roughnecks, but most of them are gentlemen.
TOUGH CHALLENGES
While working in the industry has been a great opportunity, Hunt says
there are challenges out there for women working in an industry that is still
more than 80 percent dominated by men.
My biggest challenge would have to be the guys who dont accept
females, especially when you are new to the field and dont know what
anything is, Hunt says. There were some [men] that were extremely rude,
but once you prove yourself to them and you work hard, they lighten up
on you.
Even after being in the field for two years, Hunt still runs into that
on occasion.
Its kind of a daily thing, she says. You can pretty much expect that
there is going to be one person who doesnt think you can do it, and you have
to prove yourself on a daily basis to show that you can.
Hunt says shes had supervisors tell her that they respect her for working
in the oilfields. They tell me all the time that they have a lot of respect for me
because women have to work twice as hard as men out here, and to a certain
extent I think thats true. You really have to show them that you can do it.

MORE JOINING WORKFORCE

Although there are still challenges like that throughout the industry,
many predict more women will join the workforce in the years to come.
Theres more opportunity in this industry, says Cherrie Adams,
a thread representative on workover rigs in southern Louisiana. I believe
women are more detail-oriented and thats definitely an asset.
Adams has been working in the oil industry for the last seven years for
Pipe Surveillance Services Inc.
Raymond agrees that there will be continued opportunity for women.
The more women who get out there and do a good job, the better, she says.
If you can do your job, theyre happy to have you and I think that attitude
has shifted over from what Ive heard about the oilfields of the 80s.
Hunt, Raymond and Bracken all offer the same advice to women who
are considering a career in the oil and gas industry. Be ready for hard work,
long hours and all kinds of weather, Bracken says. If the shoe doesnt fit,
then dont wear it. There are no cannot dos in the oilfield. If you cant do it,
you cant stay.
When she spoke at the 2013 Offshore Technology Conference, U.S.
Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell noted that there should be more women
working in the industry. The population of this country is far more diverse
than this industry as a whole, she said. So I think this industry has some
work to do.
Hunt remembers her first few days on the job when it was tough to show
what she could do. Its definitely a mans world out here, and you have to
be one of the guys when youre out in the field, she says. Dont let things
offend you. Take everything with a grain of salt, and dont let it get personal.
Remember, theyre not used to having a woman work next to them. Its kind
of like having brothers. GOMC

Energy Companies Start Year Strong

By Cory Dellenbach

Mergers and acquisitions rise

Thanks to fracking and foreign investment, the U.S. oil and gas industry got
off to a strong start this year, according to a report by PricewaterhouseCoopers.
The industry has had more mergers and acquisitions in 2014s first three
months than in any first quarter in more than a decade, the report says.
The report includes a quarterly analysis of deals worth at least $50 million.
A total of 43 deals worth $19.8 billion occurred, compared with 41 deals for
the first quarter of 2013.
Nearly a third of the quarters total deals involved hydraulic fracturing.
Of the 13 large deals involving shale plays, five were in the Eagle Ford region,
three in the Bakken, three in the Permian basin, one in the Utica shale and one
in the Niobrara.
Niobrara drilling productivity increasing
Figures released by the U.S. Energy Information Agency (EIA) April 15
show that drilling productivity in the Niobrara shale formation is on the rise,
a sign that development in eastern Wyoming and Colorado could continue
to grow.
The report shows that average productivity per new well drilled rose from
250 barrels per day in 2013 to a little more than 352 barrels per day.
Those statistics make the Niobrara the third most productive oil producing
region in the country behind the Bakken in North Dakota and Eagle Ford in
Texas. The average productivity of new wells in the Bakken was slightly more
than 490 barrels a day in April, while in Eagle Ford that figure was around 460
barrels a day, the EIA says.
Target Logistics wins workforce-housing contract
Target Logistics, a provider of workforce housing and one of the largest
operators of turnkey solutions in North America, announced April 10 that it
has been awarded a nearly $30 million contract over the next three years.
Target Logistics will provide workforce housing in the Bakken shale to

one of the largest independent crude oil and natural gas companies in the
United States.
Target Logistics operates 16 properties in the U.S. and Canada with
more than 5,300 total beds.
Cabot Oil gives over $2 million to college
Cabot Oil & Gas Corp., based in Pennsylvania, is giving $2.5 million
to Lackawanna College in Scranton, Pa., for its School of Petroleum and
Natural Gas.
Lackawanna College started the school in 2009, near the heart of Cabots
drilling activity. The donation will create a $1 million endowment to support
scholarships and the schools ongoing needs. An additional $1.5 million will
be used for equipment, training, staff and faculty development, and student
interactive experiences and internships.
The school currently offers associate degrees in petroleum and natural gas
technology and natural gas compression technology.
Baker Hughes buys Perfomix
Baker Hughes Incorporated, a supplier of oilfield services, products and
technology, announced April 7 that it has acquired Perfomix Inc., a Texasbased oilfield software technology company.
Baker Hughes says the purchase will strengthen its real-time digital
capabilities, and Perfomix will be integrated into the companys remote
operations services organization. The acquisition expands the companys
portfolio of field devices integration, real-time data management, and
visualization and analytics software.
The financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
Heyco building $91 million plant to
convert Eagle Ford gas to alternative fuel
A division of Dallas-based Heyco Energy Group will build a $91 million
plant east of San Antonio that will produce liquefied natural gas (LNG) for use
by operators in the Eagle Ford shale, company officials announced.
Heyco LNG was expected to break ground in May or June on the facility,
which will convert natural gas extracted from the shale into LNG that can fuel
drilling rigs and hydraulic fracturing equipment used there, according to Chris
Coleman, president of the company.
The plant will be located about an hour and a half east of San Antonio
in Lavaca County, near one of the busiest areas of the Eagle Ford. Heyco will
purchase gas from the nearby Enterprise Products Partners pipeline. GOMC

On the Money

TIME TO REINVEST?
Choosing how much to put back into your
business isnt a one-size-fits-all decision
By Erik Gunn

I
Erik Gunn

f youve been in business a while and are

beginning to see a steady profit, it may be
tempting to think you can sit back and
coast for a while. Dont fall for that.
Your real work has just begun. In a world
where markets and business conditions are
constantly changing, you always have to
be prepared for the unexpected. And one
important way to do so is to reinvest in your
business dont just pull all the profit out.
But how much should you be putting
back in?
Some people think its as simple as
picking a flat number 6 percent, 10
percent, maybe even 20 percent of your
business income and rolling it back
into the company. But to small-business

Without a certain amount of analysis

that is really important, it is not possible
to say how much money or what percent
of profits one should reinvest in ones
business, he says. There are too many
variables that affect that decision.
FACTORS TO CONSIDER
The No. 1 variable is where your
business stands in its life cycle: Is it a
startup? On a growth streak? Maturing and
stable? Or perhaps in decline and in need
of a turnaround? Each stage requires its
own careful consideration when it comes
to reinvestment.
Another variable is your competition.
Are you really the only game in town for

A small business must develop a strategic plan for growth with realistic, achievable
goals. Many small businesses fail, or dont prosper, because they really dont
have a plan as to where theyre going.
Richard Weinberger

consultant Richard Weinberger, thats kind

of shooting from the hip.
Weinberger, based in Austin, Texas, is
chief executive officer for the Association
of Accredited Small Business Consultants.
His consulting work grew out of nearly two
decades of practice as a certified public
accountant as well as years of teaching at the
college level. Hes also the author of AAMP
Approach: Accelerated Action to Maximize
Profit, a book published last year by the
association. Weinberger describes the book
as a roadmap to small-business success.
On the subject of reinvesting, theres
no one-size-fits-all answer.
40

GOMC

www.gomcmag.com - JULY 2014

the services you deliver? Or do you have to

scrap for every account you land and sale
you make?
Then theres the size of your business.
A larger, more profitable company can afford
to invest more dollars which equates to a
lower percentage, Weinberger points out.
Think about it. If youve decided you need
to put $500 a week back into the business
and youre making $1,000 a week in profits,
thats 50 percent; if youre making $10,000
a week, its only 5 percent.
Even the first question what stage
your business is in has more layers to it.
Youre growing, but what does that mean

in detail? Are you planning to add new

products or services? Have you decided you
need a capital expansion more equipment,
a bigger shop, or both?
THE FIRST STEPS
Weinberger says deciding how much
to reinvest doesnt come until after some
serious analysis.
A small business must develop a
strategic plan for growth with realistic,
achievable goals, he says. Strategic planning
isnt just for big business although it might
sound that way. Many small businesses fail,
or dont prosper, because they really dont
have a plan as to where theyre going.
Consider what niche you think you
can best fill in the marketplace. Is it your
intention to be the low-cost provider? Or
perhaps a premium-price provider with a
sterling reputation for the highest quality
services and products available? Is there a
narrow market niche you want to focus on?
SWOT AND CASH FLOW
Two important tools as you formulate
your plan are a SWOT analysis and a cashflow forecast.
SWOT is an acronym for Strengths,
Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats.
What is your operation good at? What must
you do better or get out of entirely? What
is coming up that represents a new source of
business? Whats lurking that could throw
you off your particular trajectory?
Suppose you own a hydroexcavation
business and theres talk of significant
expansion in the nearby oilfields. That offers
a potential new market opportunity. Or
suppose the opposite is true youre finding
less and less oilfield work and competition is
increasing. How do you compensate?
The cash-flow budget, meanwhile,
looks not just at how much money youre
taking in, but how much is going out and
how fast.
A profitable company can have serious
cash-flow problems, Weinberger points out
making money on paper, but falling deeper
into debt because receipts arent coming in
on a timely basis.

Comparing patterns of income and expenses over the previous few years,
the cash-flow budget projects month-to-month ups and downs in your income
in the year or even years to come, showing how much cash you have when
the bills come in.
DRAWING THE PICTURE
These tools can help you discover trends that help you improve the
business. What service or product has the highest profit margins? How much
of your time and income actually come from that segment? Perhaps you could
expand in that particular service or product and boost your profits.
By identifying strengths and opportunities to build on, as well as weaknesses
and threats you need to counter, goals and objectives begin to take shape. Once
you have a clearly defined target to aim for, then the business has to say, OK,
what is necessary to achieve those goals and objectives? Weinberger says.
What is it going to take them to get from Point A to Point B?
What sort of marketing campaign do they point to? What sort of skilled
labor is needed? Will you need to expand the physical plant? Will your
employees need special training to enter a particular new market segment?
Only then, says Weinberger, can you come back to the question of how
much to reinvest.
For two different businesses, he explains, If their goals or plans for the
future are different, then the amount they reinvest is going to be different, also.
The profit to be reinvested is really all based on what is needed to achieve the
strategic plan.
THREE MORE THINGS
If your profits are large enough to make that monthly reinvestment amount
affordable, great. But if they arent, youll need to do at least one, and probably
all, of the following: rethink your strategy, look for ways to boost profits and
cut costs.
Weinberger says his book focuses on how to expand by generating internal
business growth so that you dont have to reinvest profits. But whether you
are able to simply generate internal growth immediately, or you must continue
to reinvest for the time being, a sound analysis beats simply picking a flat
percentage of your profits, he believes.
That may be a lot more complicated and take a bit more time. But when
the future of your business is at stake, it will be time well spent.
You could even consider it an investment. GOMC

New exhibitor garners plenty of attention with time-tested Gorilla hose
By Craig Mandli

oodyear Engineered Products Yellow Gorilla nitrile rubber

multipurpose hose from Veyance Technologies is certainly not a
new product, but according to Karina Robinson, product manager
for Veyance, when you have a great product, theres no need to reinvent
the wheel.
This heavy-duty nonconductive 500 psi-rated hose can be utilized to convey
air, water, oil, petroleum-based solvents and sprays in industrial, construction
and agricultural applications that require high oil resistance. While the 2014
Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo International was her companys first
as an exhibitor, Robinson says the Gorilla hose is known across the wastewater
services industry as a multipurpose product that could likely serve the majority
of the thousands of people in attendance.
The Gorilla hose serves those in construction, agriculture, aggregate and
can be used for plant washdown, in addition to septic pumping and cleaning,
and sewer jetting, says Robinson. Its versatility is one of the big reasons why
its been the leading hose available under the Goodyear brand for so long. It is
oil- and abrasion-resistant, and crush-proof. Its a premier product for anyone in
need of a heavy-duty hose in potentially volatile environments.

Its a premier product for anyone in need of a
heavy-duty hose in potentially volatile environments.
Karina Robinson

Its tube is made of nitrile synthetic rubber and its cover is made of yellow
Carbryn (carboxylated nitrile) synthetic rubber with a Rubber Manufacturers
Association Class A high oil resistance rating, which means that both
components undergo a maximum volume change of plus-25 percent and will
maintain at least 80 percent of their tensile strength after exposure to oil.
The cover is also Mine Safety and Health Administration approved
(2G-14C/14) as flame resistant. The hose is reinforced with spiral Flexten
(aramid) synthetic yarn for heat resistance and the strength necessary to
reach and maintain its maximum pressure rating of 500 psi, and is capable of
functioning effectively at temperatures ranging from -20 to 190 degrees F. It is
rated with a minimum electrical resistance greater than 1 megohm per inch of
hose length at 1,000 volts, and it comes equipped with two factory-installed
steel male NPT couplings. It is available in 3/16-inch diameter all the way up
to 2 inches.

Mario Bedard, a research and design engineer with Veyance Technologies, discusses the
companys popular Gorilla nitrile rubber multipurpose hose with an Expo attendee. The 2014
Expo was Veyances first as an exhibitor. (Photo by Craig Mandli)

Its a product that just covers so many different areas, says Robinson.
At this show, weve talked to a lot of septic cleaners and pumpers, but also
those who jet and clean sewers and also hydroexcavators. Veyance offers a lot of
different hose products, but none get the attention of the Gorilla.
Robinson says the Veyance crew also spends a lot of time at trade shows
educating potential buyers on how to select industrial hoses. The company
uses the STAMPED method to help determine the type of hose needed: S =
Size (inside and outside diameter, and length); T = Temperature (maximum
and minimum temperatures of material being transported); A = Application
(industry or process); M = Material (to be conveyed, type and concentration);
P = Pressure (maximum working pressure); E = Ends (type of end connectors
or couplings on the hose); and D = Delivery method (volume and velocity).
Robinson was surprised by the variety of industries and hose needs
represented at the Expo. Not only did she talk about the popular Gorilla hose,
but also many other hose products that serve other industries.
I think if we had it to do over again, we would have brought more of
our large-diameter hose offerings, says Robinson. A lot of people here have
asked about big-bore hose, which is a big part of what we do. Well definitely
be back next year and with a lot more for people to see. 888/899-6354; www.

Product Spotlight
Detachable gooseneck trailer
offers front and rear loading
By Ed Wodalski
The hydraulic detachable gooseneck with oilfield beavertail trailer
from Felling Trailers enables contractors to load equipment from both
the front and rear. The detachable gooseneck allows for front loading,
while exhausting the air-ride suspension and blocking the beavertail
enables the trailer to be loaded from the rear.
You can run a piece of equipment like a tracked excavator up the
back end of the trailer without using any ramps, says Nathan Uphus, sales
representative with Felling Trailers. You just drop the air suspension,
block the beavertail and run the equipment up the back end.
Uphus says the rear-load option is especially useful when its not
possible to detach the neck of the trailer. And rear loading, in some
cases, is quicker.
The 53-foot trailer is designed to carry up to 110,000 pounds.
Capacities range from 35 to 60 tons with two- to three-axle configurations.
In production for approximately a year and a half and sold primarily
in Canada, standard features include 10-bolt hub piloted wheels, fully
sealed wiring harness, DOT-approved LED lights and 55-inch spread
air-ride suspension with dump valve.

1.

Some of the standard features include 10-inch, I-beam crossmembers

on 24-inch centers, two 26-inch front fold-over ramps, removable swingout outriggers, full 2-inch white oak deck with open center, 24 inches tall
loaded with 8 inches ground clearance and 102-inch outside diameter
width.
Options include 9- and 10-foot widths, various swing clearance
gooseneck lengths, multiple kingpin settings, 6-foot boom well in the
rear of the main deck, rear air-operated ramps, hydraulic winch, wideload lights, rear lift axles, pin pockets, various deck to trunnion approach
angles, removable or bolt-on wheel covers, gas-powered hydraulic pony
motor kit, and flip neck extension to attach a single- or tandem-axle jeep.
The entire trailer (prior to wiring and decking) is steel-grit blasted
with two coats of rust-prohibitive primer. Three finish coats of urethane
paint are electrostatically applied for added durability. Felling offers
several color choices as well as custom color match. 800/245-2809;

VIDEO SPELLS
OUT DANGERS
The simplicity of vacuum excavation often

By Doug Day

t seems simple enough water or air

under pressure to loosen soil and a
vacuum to suck it up. But as a warning
on a new safety video states, Misuse of this
equipment can lead to property damage,
serious injury or even death.
The 19-minute DVD from the
Association of Equipment Manufacturers
(AEM) is supported by AEMs 36-page
safety manual along with equipment and
job site checklists available from its website
at www.aem.org. The vacuum excavation
industry is growing rapidly with over 25
manufacturers, says William Bernhard,
manager of Technical & Safety Services
for AEM. The video was produced to
promote the safe use of the equipment
to help prevent injuries and damage to
underground utilities.
Since vacuum equipment is often
rented, the video stresses the importance
of reading and following all operating
and safety manuals provided with
the equipment. As with most large
equipment, the main safety errors are a
lack of knowledge of the machine, how

it operates and the application being

utilized, Bernhard says. Plus, a large
factor is always speed and hurrying to get
the job done.

working around energized lines.

Since it is relatively new to the U.S.,
some people dont appreciate using the
proper pressures and volumes for air and
water and figure that more is better. Under
normal application, the recommended
water volume is under 10 gpm. While the
maximum recommended water pressure
for straight-tip nozzles is 2,500 psi and
3,000 psi for a rotary nozzle, the video
suggests operators use just enough pressure
to excavate the soil. Too much water or
pressure can erode or undermine the soil
and cause damage to nearby structures,
such as power poles and streets. The video
also warns against using sewer vacuum

equipment for vacuum excavation because

it is not designed for such use.
While vacuum excavation may look
easy, Bernhard says that only multiplies
the risk of injury. Training is always
necessary when operating equipment. As
vacuum excavation becomes more popular
with experienced and knowledgeable
operators, these machines are being used
appropriately. Without proper training,
people often overlook the precautions that
experienced operators use.
Five members of AEMs Underground
Equipment Manufacturers Council Ditch
Witch, Sewer Equipment, Vacall, Vactor
and Vermeer collaborated with AEM
on the writing and planning of the video,
which was produced by a professional
production company. The DVD is available
for purchase at AEMs online store for

In April 2012, Lisa and Scott Weld
bought Bucks for the second time. Their
first crack at it was in 1995 when Scotts
father heard the 20-year-old business was
having problems. The family made an oer
to the founder and operated it for four
years as an add-on to their trash and septic
service business. In 1999, when Welds
father retired, they sold it to a national
solid waste company. Weld went to work
for that company, then 10 years later tried
his hand again at self-employment in the
trash business. A few challenges cropped
up, but they turned out to be fortuitous,
says Lisa Weld.

Based in Alvin, Texas, K-3BMI reflects a merger of two

separate businesses: K-3 Services, a diversified oilfield services
company focusing on fluid transport; and BMI, a municipal
biosolids management contractor.
With more than 120 trucks, Ercums says K-3BMIs prime
focus is on the transportation of fluids to and from drilling and
completion sites in the Eagle Ford Shale in south-central Texas
to the Haynesville Shale in northeast Texas/northwest Louisiana. His trucks are also dispatched on longer trips, hauling
specialty drilling fluids and chemicals to gas and oilfields from
Pennsylvania and North Dakota to Colorado and California.

As his company grows, Ercums develops his own managers. The majority of the managers who run our locations came up through our ranks, either
as drivers or as mechanics. Many were supervisors first at other locations, but
most of them jumped at the opportunity if I asked them to manage a new
location.
One benefit of developing his managers, Ercums says, is their willingness
to work as a team. He brings them together for quarterly meetings where
they can discuss common issues and challenges, but he says they are
also encouraged to maintain that teamwork when they go back to their
individual offices. The networking makes it possible for the company to
efficiently allocate resources both equipment and people where

If we decide to go into a new town, we buy property and we put up
a building to meet our needs. We put down roots and we let people in the
community know were there to stay. We build really nice, top-of-the-line
maintenance facilities.
The facilities are designed with lifts, compressors and other equipment
needed to maintain the K-3BMI fleet. And Ercums says his managers focus on

demand is the greatest. But the value of the teamwork goes beyond that,
Ercums says.
For a while we were busy servicing rigs for a number of companies in the
Haynesville area. A lot of those rigs have moved down to South Texas. Our guys
were telling them, We have yards down there, and sharing contact information
with the clients and our other managers.
And since Ercums company also has a smaller fleet of winch trucks, his
local offices make sure clients changing location know that K-3BMI works on
a lot of rig moves.

When Karlis Ercums III went into business

in 1981, the then 20-year-old entrepreneur

bought an aging vacuum truck to drive around
South Texas, picking up waste oil from service
stations and hauling it to recycling facilities. The
rattletrap rig drew vacuum the old-fashioned
way, off of its engines exhaust manifold.

Lessons learned from relying on the antiquated equipment had a lasting impact on Ercums
approach to outfitting K-3BMIs growing fleet of
service trucks and roll-off rigs working both the oilfield and the municipal biosolids industries across
the Lone Star State.
After more than 30 years of hauling fluids,
Ercums has a specific set of equipment standards,
with a heavy emphasis on dependability and durability. His focus on detail goes right down to fenders
specially adapted by K-3BMIs fabricators to protect
the cab and vacuum pumps on tank trailers.
(continued)

Switching to aluminum
One of the most distinctive characteristics of the K-3BMI
fleet is the reliance on 166-barrel aluminum vacuum tank trailers in addition to the 130-barrel carbon steel vacuum transports that have long been the standard in the oil and gas fields.
Ercums became interested in using larger, lighter aluminum
tanks soon after he moved into oilfield services. Back in 1986,
everybody was using carbon steel 130-barrel trailers and I

Once trucks and trailers are delivered, K-3BMI continues to fine-tune

compared to
pumps running off of drive shafts.

Weve built a lot of our business on being the second call, not
the first call. If weve got someone who tells us theyre getting
a better price, we tell them, Thats OK, but if they arent able
to do the job, then just call us back. We get called back.
Karlis Ercums III

K-3s employees assemble the hydraulic systems in-house based on a

design perfected over the years. To help protect the pumps and cabs, fabricators
modify quarter fenders to mount over the trucks drive tires.
Before new equipment is put on the road, drivers are trained on proper
operation. Because of the emissions on the new trucks, it is extremely impor
important that the drivers are trained on the trucks systems, Ercums says. He relies
on his own mechanics to maintain equipment and do most repairs.
expanSion planS
Ercums has developed a pattern when deciding to enter a new market.
We look at the play to see if its going to be a long-term situation, he says.

fleet is 2010 or newer and
that means they are more
complicated because of the new laws on emissions. Our mechanics are not
only turning a wrench, they have to learn how to use the computers to do diagnostics and they need to understand the new engines.
When trucks and trailers come in for repairs or maintenance, mechanics
are responsible for a long checklist of tests and maintenance tasks before putting a rig back on the road. I would rather fix a truck in our shop than send
someone out to fix one at the side of the road in the middle of the night,
Ercums explains.
promote from within
As his company grows, Ercums develops his own managers.

Luke Muecke, a mechanic in K-3BMIs Alvin, Texas, location, works on a Cummins ISX
engine. The company performs almost all of its own mechanical and fabrication work.

We look at the area to see if there are opportunities for growth. We look to see
if theres a strong infrastructure.

Quality countS
Ercums approach to outfitting his company can be expensive, but he says
the investment has been worthwhile. He believes the larger aluminum tanks on
his trailers make his operation more efficient and he says the way K-3BMI specs
its trucks make them more durable. That, he says, makes services reliable. And
service counts, he says, because the types of fluids that we haul are extremely
important to the drilling and completion of
