www.78rpmcommunity.com
The 78rpm Collectors Community is a social network for collectors of 78rpm
recordings, phonographs, memorabilia, recording machines and the history of
the 78rpm recording era. It's like FaceBook - but for collectors of all things
78rpm related.
Welcome
This being the 4th
edition of The
Discographer
Magazine - it is fair to
say that it has
established itself as a
much-needed resource and
welcome edition for 78rpm
collectors worldwide. We feature
in this edition three articles/
discographies written especially
for the magazine by three authors
well-known to many 78rpm
collectors using the internet. All
three authors are active members
of the 78rpm Collectors
Community - but all three are also
highly successful restorers or
researchers of 78rpm records.
Beginning with a comprehensive
article and discography by Doug
Hamilton, we look at the The
London Piano Accordion Band - in
all its shapes and forms. (See
page 45.) Although an incomplete

work in progress, this detailed
discography explores the talents
of the leaders of this group -
Billy Reid, George Scott Wood and
Eric Winstone.
We also feature a meticulously
researched discography on the
Virtuoso String Quartet - (a very
ne group active for HMV from
1924-1929). Written by Bryan
Bishop, many collectors of
classical music will recognize the
name as author and blog-writer of
the highly successful, The
Shellackophile - which explores
recordings of classical music from
the 78-rpm era. Bryans amazing
restoration work with 78rpms is
well known and admired.
You can view Bryan's extensive
blog here:

We also feature a discography
written and researched by the
excellent 78rpm restorer - Bill
Anderson. Many collectors will
recognize the name through his
posts on the 78-L mailing list and
other such lists on GoogleGroups.
Bill Anderson has meticulously
researched the rst recordings of
the St. Louis Symphony
Orchestra. His discography
features the early Victor acoustic
and early electric recordings from
this ne ensemble for 1923, 1924
and 1925. His excellent
accompanying article is also a
delightful read - thoroughly

The Danish Radio Orchestra is forever
connected with the trail blazing premire
recordings of Carl Nielsen's symphonies,
but here it demonstrates its active
recording schedule in the late 40's and
early 50's. Fritz Busch gives a
wonderfully sunny performance of
Brahms' Second Symphony. Issay
Dobrowen also gives a white hot
rendering of Glinka's 'Russlan. Mogens
Wldike conducts a brilliant account of
the Haydn 91st symphony and the Six

Dutton's transfers are clear and solid
whilst Lyndon Jenkins' notes are clear.
Highly recommended.

A Discography of HMV recordings by
the Virtuoso String Quartet (1924-29)
Written by Bryan Bishop
The Virtuoso String Quartet was founded late in 1923 by four British
musicians, apparently for the express purpose of making recordings.
Each of its members was a veteran of the recording studios. First
violinist Marjorie Hayward and cellist Cedric Sharpe (whose idea the
Virtuoso String Quartet seems to have been) were both long-standing
solo artists at HMV ("His Master's Voice," or The Gramophone Co., Ltd.),
and were each also a member of a previous string quartet making
recordings, Hayward with the English String Quartet on Columbia, and
Sharpe with the
Philharmonic String
Quartet on HMV. Second
violinist Edwin Virgo was
a member of the former
ensemble, and violist
Raymond Jeremy a
member of the latter.
I am indebted to Tully
Potter, who probably
knows as much about
great string players of the
past and their
recordings as anyone
alive, for the above
information. Interested
persons should look into
his excellent article,
"Virtues of the Virtuoso
Four", published in the
Summer 2011 issue of
Classical Recordings
Quarterly, which is a
survey of the Virtuoso
String Quartet's activity
in studios (both recording
and radio) and in concert.
The Discographer Magazine - Number 4
February 2014 / 11
While earlier string quartet ensembles (such as the Flonzaley, Catterall
and Lener String Quartets) had begun their recording careers by being
limited to making potboilers, isolated movements and abridgments from
the string quartet repertoire before being permitted to record complete
works, the Virtuoso String Quartet took the opposite trajectory during
their brief career in the studios. By the time of their appearance, there
was a push to record, for the rst time, major symphonic and chamber
music works in complete form, largely instigated by a new journal, "The
Gramophone," founded in 1923 by Compton Mackenzie. The Virtuoso
String Quartet recorded three complete quartets one by Tchaikovsky,
one by Beethoven, and the Franck, as well as the Frank Bridge "Three
Idylls" by the acoustical recording process, and each of these was a
recording premire. With the arrival of electrical recording, the
Virtuoso String Quartet were able to contribute to the Beethoven
centennial celebrations in 1927 with three more
Beethoven quartets, but by this time, HMV had
signed the more prestigious Budapest String
Quartet and the Virtuoso String Quartet
were thereafter reduced to recording
isolated movements and potboilers. (A
notable exception was the Ravel
Quartet, their last issued recording.)
They made no recordings after 1929,
although Tully Potter notes that they
continued to concertize and to
broadcast until their disbanding in
1936. By 1943, all of their HMV
recordings had disappeared from the
catalogue.
The choice of the name "Virtuoso" for the group was seen as
inappropriate in some quarters. "The Gramophone," reviewing their rst
recording in July, 1924, opined that they "do not, luckily, live up to their
unfortunately chosen name. (A quartet, as I once remarked before, is
essentially a republic, not a monarchy, and artists who call themselves
virtuosi are invariably petty monarchs.) This is an excellent and
competent body of players..." Both Hayward and Sharpe, as mentioned
above, had localized reputations as solo artists, which could possibly
have accounted for the name, but in any case this was disguised from
the record-buying public by the fact that the players' names never
appeared on the labels! (They were usually credited, however, in the
liner notes of the albums.)
The Discographer Magazine - Number 4
February 2014 / 12
For this discography I have loosely taken as a model the excellent
Flonzaley Quartet discography by Jon Samuels, published in the May
1988 issue of the Association for Recorded Sound Collections' "ARSC
Journal" (Vol. 19, No. 1). The format is in three large sections. In the
rst, [page 18 onwards], recordings are listed chronologically by session
(i.e., a different session for each different date). Each session is divided
into three columns, the rst for the matrix and take numbers (with
issued takes being underlined), the second for the original issue number
(if the recording was actually released), and the last for the composer
and work (and parts of movements, if applicable). The location of the
recording, and actual studio used (if known) is also indicated following
the session number and recording date. All of the Virtuoso String
Quartet's recordings were made for HMV in England. Matrix numbers
beginning with "Bb" are 10-inch matrices; those beginning with "Cc" are
12-inch matrices. To compile this listing I have relied on Alan Kelly's
HMV matrix listings of the Bb/Cc series (1921-30), self-published by Mr.
Kelly as a CD-ROM. (For more information about the les of Alan Kelly, whose
comprehensive research into The Gramophone Company's output will likely remain
unparalleled, visit www.normaneld.com/kelly.htm.)
The second section, [page 27 onwards], is a
combination index (by composer) and
complete issue listing. Each work is listed
with a reference to the session
number(s) in Section I that produced
the recording, with session numbers
yielding issued takes being underlined.
This is followed, for issued recordings,
by the HMV issue number, number of
sides and coupling; album set number (if
any); the dates of issue and of deletion;
automatic sequence coupling numbers (if
any); the American Victor issue number; and a
reference to online sites where the recording may
be heard and/or downloaded. The third section, [page 35 onwards], is a
chronological listing of issued recordings, including side layouts for
multi-movement works. For issues of shorter works I have given the
titles of the pieces as they appear on the labels.
HMV records by the Virtuoso String Quartet were issued in three
coupling series. Continued on page 16...

The earlier issues (up to March, 1927) were in the black label "D" series,
a mid-price (as we would call it today) line somewhat cheaper than the
premium-priced red label series but more expensive than the plum label
"C" (12-inch) and "B" (10-inch) series which functioned as HMV's
popular line. By December, 1927, the Virtuoso String Quartet's
recordings were being issued in these cheaper series. For the issue and
deletion dates of these releases I have relied on the discographies of the
"C" series (by Frank Andrews and Michael Smith) and the "D" series (by
Michael Smith), published by the City of London Phonograph and
Gramophone Society (www.clpgs.org.uk). There is also a "B" series
discography (by Frank Andrews and Ernie Bayly), but I never bothered
to acquire it as I did the other two; my thanks therefore go to Robert
Girling, the publications director of the CLPGS, for kindly supplying me
with the issue and deletion dates for the three Virtuoso String Quartet
releases in the "B" series.
A word about HMV's album series: The Gramophone Company had been
producing album sets almost from their earliest days, primarily of
"complete" operas and other large vocal works, but it was only towards
the end of 1926 that HMV seems to have decided to have an "Album
Series of Complete Works" in a numbered sequence to keep track of this
growing branch of their operations. Album numbers never appeared on
the labels of the records themselves, merely on the album containers,
and (from 1929) in the HMV catalogues. The rst 25 or so of these
numbers seem to have been assigned retroactively to sets in their
existing catalogue in 1926, as is evident when one arranges the titles of
these 25 sets in numerical order, for the sequence is not chronological
indeed, acoustical and electrical sets are intermixed. The progression
seems to be: opera, operetta (Nos. 4 to 12 are Gilbert & Sullivan sets, in
alphabetical order), symphonies, chamber music, piano music,
miscellaneous. Then with No. 26 the sets become chronological. Two of
the Virtuoso String Quartet's sets are among these rst 25 sets: the
Franck Quartet (No. 18) and the Debussy (No. 19). (My copies of these two
albums have no set number anywhere on them, which is another reason I believe the
numbers were assigned after the fact.) The criterion for inclusion within the
album set series seems to have been works requiring four or more
records (six or more in the case of the existing acoustical sets). HMV's
album set series certainly is a subject worthy of further research.
Automatic sequence couplings designed for use with HMV's automatic
changer mechanisms were introduced in 1928, the numbers in all series
beginning at 7000. None of the Virtuoso String Quartet's recordings
then in the catalogue were given automatic couplings, however. The
The Discographer Magazine - Number 4
February 2014 / 16
Ravel Quartet, issued in 1931, was released in standard and automatic
couplings simultaneously. Then, in 1933, a new style of changer
mechanism was introduced, necessitating reissues of those sets already
on the catalogue with a different coupling to accommodate the new
mechanism. This accounts for there being two sets of automatic
sequence couplings for the Ravel Quartet. At about the same time the
older sets in the "D" series were also given automatic couplings,
presumably for the new mechanism.
There were two basic types of automatic couplings:
1) the "slide" automatic, where a set of four records, for example, would
have sides 1 and 5 coupled, 2 and 6, etc. It is called "slide" because the
records were placed on the turntable before play with side 1 on top,
and the records allowed to slide off after play into a padded drawer,
until they were all nished, then the stack retrieved and turned over
with side 5 on top;
2) the "drop" automatic, where the same set of four records would have
sides 1 and 8 coupled, 2 and 7, 3 and 6, and 4 and 5. The records
would drop from a higher point onto the turntable, and after play, the
stack would be turned over and played in reverse order. The
existence of two types of automatic couplings means that the odd-
side llers for affected sets could have been on either the rst record
of a set (for "drop" automatic" sets) or the last record (for "slide
automatic" sets), and, since I have no way of knowing which type of
coupling HMV used at which time, I have indicated both possible
numbers for ller sides in the issue listing.
In the United States, HMV recordings were issued by Victor, through an
exclusive licensing arrangement between the two companies that lasted
until 1957. The merest handful of Virtuoso String Quartet sides, 13 in
total, were issued by Victor; the oddest of these issues being of the piece
formerly known as "Haydn's Serenade" (actually by Hoffstetter) which
was issued as part of a Black Label set entitled "Dinner Music Famous
Serenades"! The remaining Victor releases were Red Seal records,
including one release in the Victor Musical Masterpiece album series
(with an M- prex for manual coupling, and an AM- prex for "slide"
automatic).
There are 90 total issued sides by the Virtuoso String Quartet, and of
these, some 60 are audible online as free downloads from various
places. My own blog, "The Shellackophile" shellackophile.blogspot.com
is one of these, as is Damian Rogan's site, "Damian's 78s" -
The Discographer Magazine - Number 4
February 2014 / 17
www.damians78s.co.uk. In both cases the ZIPped les must be
downloaded to your computer for listening. There is also a large
collection (40 sides) available at the invaluable site hosted by the AHRC
Research Centre for the History and Analysis of Recorded Music
(CHARM) (www.charm.rhul.ac.uk), where the recordings may either
be downloaded or listened to with their online player. There are some
overlaps between what CHARM has and what Damian and I have. With
CHARM, extended works must be heard one side at a time, whereas
with mine and Damian's transfers the sides are joined for continuous
play.

THE LONDON PIANO ACCORDION BAND
Prepared By Doug Hamilton
This is an incomplete work in progress. Readers are invited to submit
any missing data so that a better report can result. In particular some
might have albums which contain extra background information.
Directors: BILLY REID (BR) GEORGE SCOTT WOOD (GSW) ERIC WINSTON (EW)
# #
# BILLY REID GEORGE SCOTT WOOD ERIC WINSTONE
There were many accordion groups playing at the same time in the
1930s, but the only one which seriously rivaled Primo Scala [Harry
Bidgood] was the London Piano Accordion Band, led at different times
by Billy Reid (1902-1974) [about 1931 to 1934], George Scott Wood
(1903-1978) [1934 to 1940], and Eric Winstone (1915-1974) [1940 to
about 1941]. Billy Reid's band invariably teamed up with youthful
vocalist Dorothy Squires after 1936, who went
on to become an international star in her
own right. Billy also recorded as Billy
Reid Accordion Band.
Multi-talented George Scott Wood,
born in Glasgow in 1903, recorded
for the Regal Zonophone label and
made many tracks between 1934
and the early 1940s, during which
time he also busied himself with his
own jazz group called the Six
Swingers[on RZ and Columbia], and
his Accordion Band. He also found
time to perform with several other
groups including the International

Novelty Orchestra. Despite his heavy work load, and just like Harry
Bidgood, he managed to maintain a high standard of music which the
public thoroughly enjoyed bouncy, catchy, melodic and tuneful
everything which the modern successor to the old concertina was
capable of achieving via its bellows and keyboard. George Scott Wood
died in 1978. Vocalists were seldom named on the RZ discs
unfortunately. Prior to 1934 he recorded as Britannica Accordion Band
[on Decca], Bobby Brown and his accordion band [on Panachord/Decca]
and Roberto Accordion Band He also recorded later as George Scott
Wood Accordion Band.
Eric Winstone (1915-74), was extremely popular as a solo accordionist
and also with his swing quartet, where his virtuoso playing was well
supported by a string bass, guitar and vibraphone. He also recorded for
Regal Zonophone with the bigger London Piano Accordion Band, before
nally switching to his larger-than-life dance orchestra which enjoyed
several post-war hits. He retained his smaller accordion ensemble for
radio broadcasts and recording, especially for the ever-popular favorite
program, "Music While You Work". His main vocalists were Alan Kane
and Julie Dawn. (1925-2000).
Spelling- either accordion or accordeon both used on labels.
THE RECORDING ASPECT
The many and various accordion bands recorded prolically in Britain
and other countries. The information as to the composition of many of
these bands is not easily found now. One particular reason is that
writers such as Brian Rust did not regard them as dance bands and
hence Brian did not include them in his British book.
A further complication is due to the policy of some recording companies
not including enough on record labels particularly in omitting to name
vocalists, who were usually normal dance band
vocalists of the time.
Compounding the difculty was also that
often a pseudonym was used, and later
album compilers often did not know or
were lax in disco graphic data.
Fortunately some enthusiasts have
researched and are publishing data, but
much still is desired.
One of the largest accordion recording
companies was the EMI British REGAL and
REGAL ZONOPHONE label, who pressed a
great number of these bands. So far a

February 2014 / 46
complete listing for this label does not seem to have been published, but
discographers such as John Rogers of Melbourne are endeavoring to
compile listings, some of which are available on specialist web sites.
Examination of actual record labels has given much information.
Often the record releases in other countries such as Australia had
different track couplings and even used other pseudonyms for the band.

St. Louis Symphony - The First Recordings
Written by Bill Anderson
Introduction
Like many classical record collectors, for years I assumed that the St.
Louis Symphonys recorded legacy started with the conductor Vladimir
Golschmann. As music director of the orchestra from 1931 through
1958, Golschmann made a number of signicant recordings for the RCA
Victor, Columbia, and Capitol record labels, both in the LP and 78 rpm
eras. Indeed, Golschmanns rst recordings as a conductor were with St.
Louis, in 1934, featuring
the premier recordings of
Alexander Tansmans
Triptyque for String
Orchestra,
(See Note 1)
and
the Haydn Drum Roll
symphony.
But before those sides are
recorded there was a
small group of discs made
with the orchestra for the
Victor Company from
1923 to 1925. The
recordings featured an
accomplished pianist and
composer leading the orchestra,
but one not usually associated
with conducting, Rudolph Ganz.
St. Louis and Its Orchestra: A Short History
St. Louis, Missouri, near the conuence of the Missouri and Mississippi
rivers, is a central point for transportation and commerce in the
Midwest. Initially relying on river trafc, it became, with the end of the
American Civil War, a critical rail hub and overland transportation
center. The beginning of the great western expansion of the United
States had St. Louis as a starting point, with the city earning the title
Gateway to the West.
Rapid Industrialization increased the importance of the city and
immigration its population. In 1850 the city had 160,000 inhabitants,
but by the 1890s close to a half-million people called St. Louis home.
And, like several Midwestern locations, the city became a magnet for

many European immigrants, most notably those of German, Italian, and
Slavic backgrounds. In addition to bringing needed labor and business
skills, these groups also brought over their own cultural history and
appreciation of the arts, especially music.
The city had a number of amateur and semiprofessional musical
organizations during that time, and several larger touring ensembles
provided both popular and classical concerts. By 1880 there was
enough interest in serious music that a 28 year old German organist,
Joseph Otten, and the city elders created the St. Louis Choral-
Symphony Society, the original name of the St. Louis Symphony. It was
(and is) the second oldest permanent orchestra in the United States.
Over the next several years the organization gave concerts of
predominantly choral music, but occasionally performed orchestral
works, including several Beethoven, Mozart and Mendelssohn
symphonies.
Mr. Otten stayed with the society until 1894, resigning after the Society,
struggling with decits, severely reduced the number of scheduled
concerts. Alfred Ernst, a 26 year old pianist from Germany, took over
as conductor. During his reign, the orchestra was able to get on rmer
nancial footing, and performance standards improved, gaining many
favorable reviews of concerts during the Worlds Fair, hosted by the city
in 1904. By the time Mr. Ernst returned to Germany in 1907, the
orchestra had a permanent performing venue, The Odeon Theatre, and
several musicians of note were performing with the orchestra, such as
Fritz Kreisler, and Josef Hoffman.
Max Zach was the third conductor of the Symphony. An
accomplished violist in the Boston Symphony, he was also a
seasoned conductor, directing the Boston Symphony's
popular concerts for 10 years. He made signicant
improvements in the orchestra during his tenure, adding a
number of new orchestra musicians and increasing the
number of concerts the orchestra would perform during the
season. Several noted soloists now played with the orchestra - Serge
Rachmaninoff, Wilhelm Backhaus, Albert Spaulding, Ossip
Gabrilowitsch, among others.
The stature of the Symphony improved steadily under Zach. During the
war years he was able to continue conducting the orchestra unmolested
(unlike fellow Germans Karl Muck in Boston, and Ernst Kunwald in
Cincinnati, both of whom were imprisoned as enemy aliens in 1918).
The orchestra began touring around the Midwest, including a pair of
concerts in Chicago in 1920. Unfortunately, the orchestra, on the verge
of shedding its provincial image, unexpectedly lost Dr. Zach, who died
from an infection in 1921.

The Search for a New Conductor
The Symphonys Board of Directors understood that the St. Louis
Symphony was on the verge of becoming an important cultural
organization, both regionally and nationally. While appreciating the
professionalism Zach brought, he was not known as an inspiring artist.
So, a search was on for new conductor; a name musician would draw
larger audiences and increase the stature of the orchestra.
At rst, they tried to hire the violinist Fritz Kreisler. While he was not a
conductor, he was arguably one of the most well-known and popular
musicians of the time. Negotiations over salary eventually broke down,
and other musicians were considered for the position. During the end of
the 1921 season, three guest conductors performed with the symphony
and were candidates for the position; St. Louis native son Theodore
Spiering, concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic under Mahler,
Dirk Fock, a rising young conductor from The Netherlands, and Rudolph
Ganz, a well known concert pianist, educator, and composer.
Of the three, Ganz had a particularly impressive debut with the
orchestra; so impressive that, in a straw poll taken by the musicians, he
was nearly unanimously recommended for the conductor post. The
Orchestras managing board agreed, and Ganz became the orchestras
permanent conductor in March, 1921.
Rudolph Ganz Before St. Louis.
Ganz was born in Zrich Switzerland in 1877. As a boy he
learned to play both the cello and piano, making his debut
as a concert pianist with the Berlin Philharmonic at age
22. Less than a year later, again with the Berlin
Philharmonic, he made his conducting debut, performing
his own First Symphony. At that time he also studied
composition under Ferrucio Busoni.
Ganz had an active professional life as a concert pianist throughout
Europe, and successful tours in both the United States and Canada. He
became head of the piano department of the Chicago Musical College in
1901, a post he held for ve years. Returning to Europe to continue his
concert career, he also made several piano recordings for Pathe, and
piano roll recordings for the Duo Art and Welte-Mignon companies.
A charming an erudite man, he was an active champion of modern
music of his time, but performed that role with humility and no small
sense of humor. Later in life, when asked what he desired for Christmas,
he said I'd like to have an hour or two added to the day. I'd like to have
more good hours on the radio and I wish Schoenberg would write
something melodious."

Ganz and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra - 1921 to 1927
Ganzs innovative programming and
interest in modern music were on full
display for his rst season in St. Louis. Of
the fteen programs offered during that
season, twelve presented works that
were heard in St. Louis for the rst time,
and of those works, 2/3rds were by
composers living in the 20th century.
But there was no skimping in rehearsing
or performing more mainstream works;
local critics were appreciative of his
insightful readings of the Brahms Third
and Tchaikovskys Fifth symphonies.
In that rst season, as with the others
throughout his tenure, the concerts
where Ganz was featured as soloist were
especially welcome. He performed the
Tchaikovsky First Piano Concerto to both
popular and critical acclaim that rst
season (He performed this Concerto again
in 1926, and returned after the
intermission to conduct an impassioned
reading of the Pathtique Symphony).
What is especially impressive in the rst St. Louis years is that he was a
relative novice is a conductor. He was in effect learning his craft in full
view of the public, the critics, and most important of all, the musicians.
He wore the mantle of conductor lightly, freely admitting to the
orchestra that he
knew very little about
what to do with the
baton. "Gentlemen, the
orchestra is not my
instrument, so please,
do your best and we
will learn together
Ganz was especially
interested in getting
audience feedback.
One unusual approach
was to request that
audience members
return pamphlets,
included in the concert programs of a new work, indicating whether or

not they wished to hear it again. Using that information, Ganz
programmed additional performances of, among others pieces,
Stravinsky's Firebird Suite, Mahler's Fourth Symphony, and Vaughn-
Williams London Symphony.
Other outreach projects included special children's concerts beginning
in 1922, the rst of its kind for American orchestras. Those concerts
included at least one especially programmed for African -American
children (unusual, considering the segregationist era) that featured
works by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. Ganz considered actively recruiting
women to play in the orchestras violin section, unheard of at that time
(although he never acted upon this idea).
The Victor Recordings
A different kind of outreach was envisioned when the orchestra began
to make commercial recordings. Ganz, according to one interview, saw
the records as a way to achieve national status for the orchestra. This
was especially important as Victor, although the largest recording
company in America, had only recently started to record American
orchestras. The rst Boston Symphony records (under Karl Muck) and
those with the Philadelphia Orchestra (under Stokowski) were made in
1917. The New York Philharmonic sides (with Mengelberg) followed in
1922. The popularity and reputation of these orchestras were
substantial, so it appears signicant that the Victor management
believed Ganz and the St. Louis Symphony should join that prestigious
group. It was, to be sure, not quite the same arrangement as the other
orchestras. The St. Louis discs were mostly issued on the lower status
Blue Label records as compared to the Red Seal for the other
organizations. But still it was a vote of
condence from Victor as to the
commercial potential of the project.
The recording sessions spanned
three short periods, all in late
autumn-early winter, over
three years. The sessions
resulted in the following
commercial records, unless
noted otherwise.

It is interesting to note that the Weber overture had not been performed
in St. Louis until premiered by Ganz in 1923. It was also one of the new
pieces the St. Louis audiences indicated they wished to hear in
subsequent concerts (Ganz scheduled again in his last season). The
Festival Overture of Eduard Lassen (1830-1904) is only one of two
recordings of the work done in the acoustic era. The dAlbert may have
been the rst recording of the piece.

With only eight double-sided records
to review, it is difcult to get a clear
picture of what Ganz and the
orchestra achieved during those six
years he was conductor. Part of this
is due to the unfortunate timing of
the recording sessions; the switch
from acoustical to electrical more or
less scrapped the 1924 sessions. And
the 1925 discs bring into high relief
the technical limitations of the early
electrical recording process. The
sound quality is not helped by the
boxy acoustics of the performing
venue (the specic location is

unknown). Could those later sessions have offered more evidence to
gauge Ganz ability at that time as a conductor and programmer? We
will never know...
Listening to the recordings give us a glimpse, however imperfect, of an
interesting artist. Ganz rst record as a conductor, the Weber
Euryanthe overture, is a strong and vibrant reading. The Mendelssohn,
too, is satisfying, with unique string phrasings and rhythmic approach.
The German Nell Gwyn dances offers enthusiastic performances of
these popular pieces.
In short, the discs we do have are a small sample, a hint of what may
have and could have been in those years of his involvement with the
orchestra. For collectors, this is a similar situation to that of Ossip
Gabrilowitsch. Like Ganz, Gabrilowitsch was known primarily as a
concert pianist, but was also the conductor of the Detroit Symphony.
The Gabrilowitsch recorded legacy as a conductor amounts to 4 double-
sided Victor discs done in 1928.
Ganz after St. Louis
Unlike Gabrilowitsch, who died while still leading the Detroit orchestra
in 1936, Ganz had a long and successful career after his years in St.
Louis (Ganz resigned his position in 1927 after a petition was circulated
criticizing his leadership and programming). Today he is remembered
primarily for his work at the Chicago Musical College, becoming the
president of that organization in 1934 and serving in that capacity until
1958. He also continued to perform publicly as both pianist and
conductor. Building on his enthusiasm working with young people, he
conducted the New York Philharmonics Young Peoples Concerts from
1939 until 1949. He also performed regularly on radio, for both classical
and popular programs. Ganz lived to age 95, passing in 1972.
As a recording artist, his output after the St.
Louis sessions was quite small. As a pianist;
four sides were done and released for
Victor in 1930. A few more were done by
American Decca in 1944. His last studio
recording as a conductor appears to be a
78 rpm set of 10 inch records he did
with a pickup orchestra (the
Metropolitan Symphony). The set was a
hybrid commercial / educational
document, with music critic Deems
Taylors commentary, dedicated to Griegs

I was fortunate in 2008 to have access to all of the Ganz / St. Louis commercially released
recordings. I transferred and restored the Victor discs as part of an internet series titled
The Midwest Tour celebrating recordings of Midwestern based musicians from the 78
rpm and mono LP eras.
For those interested in hearing these records, they can be downloaded (in a zipped le)
from the following location:
https://www.mediare.com/?h1wa9vkm3k59cu9
(Note 3 - Includes recording of Holberg Suite)
The mp3 audio les were encoded in mono at 192 kbps. The zip le includes scans of the
Victor record labels. The transfer of the Pilotone set is also included.
Additionally, several Duo Art piano roll reproductions of Rudolph Ganz can be heard on
YouTube. Especially intriguing is a four hand performance (with Ernest Hutcheson) of the
Fingals Cave Overture, recorded the same year as the St. Louis Orchestra 78 sides:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?Dmaehd-uhDU
While controversy continues about the accuracy of piano roll reproductions, it is
interesting to note that, later in his life, Ganz thought favorably of his Duo Art recordings,
and was pleased that his students would listen to them!

Dating English 78rpm Records by Catalog Number
Prepared by Sam Hopper
This record number dating guide is mostly for classical 78rpms released by the
major English record companies during the 78rpm era and includes HMV and
Columbia and some lesser known labels. I have also included some material
under the COLUMBIA section for 10 and 12inch records for dating via matrix
numbers.
It is often possible to identify the recording date of some 78rpm records by their
appearance in sequence within a record series - as most major record companies
of the time released records more-or-less in order of record number. However,
this was not always the case. With the following list, I have tried to create some
order from the chaos.
I encourage all collectors who wish to explore this topic further to investigate
the excellent book, The Almost Complete 78 RPM Record Dating Guide (II).
By Steven C. Barr. Published and distributed by Yesterday Once Again ($14.95).
I also believe the book can be purchased through the NUACK website at www.
78rpm.com (See a review of this book at: http://www.timbrooks.net/review-
barr-almost-complete-guide
Although Steven will not be updating the book in the future, it is still a
comprehensive, well-research book priced at great value.

Nat Shilkret as Director - 78rpm Output
Nat Shilkret was born to a
musical family. His father
played a number of
instruments, and made
certain that Nat and his
three brothers were all
accomplished musicians at
an early age. Older brother
Lew Shilkret was a ne
pianist, but also worked in
the insurance industry.
Younger brother Jack
Shilkret had a career that
paralleled Nathaniel's
career: he played clarinet
and piano, recorded
extensively, and conducted
and played piano on the
radio and in motion
pictures. The youngest
brother Harry Shilkret was
a medical doctor, who
worked his way through
school playing trumpet, and
continued to play trumpet
frequently in Nathaniel's
orchestras, particularly for
radio broadcasts, long after he was a practicing allergist.
Nathaniel Shilkret's brother-in-law, Nathaniel Finston, was violinist in
many organizations in his youth and was musical director for
Paramount and later for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, at one time being
Nathaniel Shilkret's boss.
Shilkret was a child prodigy, touring the country with the New York
Boys' Orchestra from the ages of seven to thirteen as their clarinet
soloist. From his late teens to mid-twenties he was a clarinetist in the
best New York music organizations, including the New York
Philharmonic Society (under Vassily Safanov and Gustav Mahler), the
New York Symphony Orchestra, the Metropolitan Opera House
Orchestra, the Russian Symphony Orchestra, Victor Herbert's
Orchestra, Arnold Volpe's Orchestra, Sousa's Grand Concert Band,
Arthur Pryor's Band, and Edwin Franko Goldman's Band. He was also a
rehearsal pianist for Walter Damrosch, playing for stars that included
dancer Isadora Duncan.

Nat Shilkret
He joined the Foreign Department of the Victor Talking Machine
Company (later RCA Victor) around 1915, and soon was made manager
of the department.
[1][2][3]
In 1926 he became "director of light music" for Victor. He made
thousands of recordings, possibly more than anyone in recording
history. His son Arthur estimated the sales of these records was of the
order of 50 million copies. He was the conductor of choice for many of
Victor's innovative recordings. He conducted Victor's rst record made
by the electrical process, the rst commercial Victor Long Playing
record (in 1931) and was the rst conductor to successfully dub an
electrically recorded orchestra background over the recordings of
Enrico Caruso, Victor's star artist, who died in 1921, before electrical
recording was developed. The premiere recording of George Gershwin's
symphonic poem, An American in Paris, in 1929, was one of ve
conducted by Shilkret that eventually earned Grammy Awards. His last
Victor session was on December 21, 1932, although he is credited with a
later Victor session on July 9, 1940.
He was also one of radio's earliest stars, estimating that he made over
3000 broadcasts between 1925 and 1941, including being the conductor
for The Eveready Hour, regarded as the rst major commercial

broadcast and the rst major variety show.
Between his conducting for records and for radio, virtually every
musical star of the day performed under the baton of
Nathaniel Shilkret. His orchestra members included
Jimmy Dorsey, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman,
Lionel Hampton, Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, Mike
Mosiello and Del Staigers. George Gershwin, Jascha
Heifetz, Mischa Elman and Andrs Segovia all
played under his direction. Opera stars Rose
Bampton, Lucrezia Bori, Feodor Chaliapin, Jon
Crain, Richard Crooks, Miguel Fleta, Emilio de
Gogorza, Amelita Galli-Curci, Mary Garden,
Beniamino Gigli, Helen Jepson, Maria Jeritza,
Giovanni Martinelli, Nino Martini, John McCormack,
James Melton, Grace Moore, Jan Peerce, Lily Pons, Rosa Ponselle,
Elisabeth Rethberg, Gladys Rice, Tito Schipa, Gladys Swarthout, John
Charles Thomas, and Lawrence Tibbett were all conducted by Nathaniel
Shilkret. The lists of popular singers and foreign artists that played
under his direction are just as impressive.
