ALTERNATE FUELS FOR INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES




NUMBER OF PERIODS: 60 CREDITS: 03

Course Objective: To understand the different types of alternate fuels and their uses in IC engine.
To impart the knowledge on the production methods of alternate fuels.

UNIT:I (15 PERIODS)
FUELS: availability and suitability to piston engines, concept of conventional fuels, potential
alternative fuels- ethanol, methanol, hydrogen, LPG, natural gas , producer gas, bio gas and
vegetable oils, use in IC engines and merits and demerits of various fuels.

UNIT:II (15 PERIODS)
ALCOHOL FUELS: properties as engine fuels- alcohol and gasoline blends- flexible fuel vehicle
reformed alcohols use in IC engines emulsion fumigation dual fuel systems spark assisted
diesel engines- surface ignition engines ignition accelerators manufacture of alcohol fuels
performance and combustion characteristics in S. I engines

UNIT:III (15 PERIODS)
GASEOUS FUELS: hydrogen properties use in C. I engines use in S. I engines storage
methods safety precautions production methods, producer gas and bio gas raw materials
gasification properties cleaning up the gas use in S.I engines, LPG and natural gas
properties use in S.I AND C.I ENGINES. Performance and combustion characteristics in engine.

UNIT:IV (15 PERIODS)
VEGETABLE OILS: various vegetable oils for engines structure of vegetable oil comparison
with gasoline and diesel fuel importance of viscosity in using the vegetable oil as fuel
etherification process chemical reaction properties of vegetable oil ester performance and
combustion characteristics of engine using ester as fuel

LEARNING OUTCOMES
Unit -I
The learner will understand the usage of various alternative fuels, their
suitability, relative merits and demerits.
Unit -II
The learner will be able to understand the production of alcohol fuels, fuel
blends, fuel additives and their usage.
Unit -III
The learner will be able to understand the usage of gaseous fuels like
Hydrogen, CNG, LPG and their production methods, Performance and
Combustion characteristics.
Unit -IV
The learner will have an understanding of the principles involved in usage of
Vegetable oils as IC engine fuels.
