Jane Kaiser of Crestwood believes
that life is not a spectator sport.
At 65 years old, and in robust
health, Kaisers active lifestyle is
such an inspiration that the National
Senior Games Association selected
her for its prestigious Personal Best
Award.
Kaiser participated in varsity
athletics at Ursuline Academy, and
also in college. While completing
her bachelor of nursing at St. Louis
University (SLU) as an adult, she
decided to try out for the volleyball
and feld hockey teams.
I went part-time to SLU, but the
last semester I went full time so I
could try out, and I made the team!
she said, I was this old lady with
all these young kids, and I didnt get
a lot of time in the game, but I made
the team.
Her love of sports and her skill
at nursing have guided her to her
current endeavors as a clinical nurse
and speaker, focusing on preventative
care and helping other seniors stay
active. Kaiser has been with the
Visiting Nurses Association since
2006, where she conducts Biometric
Wellness Clinics for seniors.
We check their BMI, blood
pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol,
and offer consulting to discuss the
results, Kaiser said. We discuss
the lifestyle changes they need to
improve their numbers.
I really enjoy it; its really neat
because youre changing somebody
for the better, and change is diffcult,
she added.
A lifestyle change does not have to
be a big adjustment as Kaiser pointed
out.
Get out and walk ten minutes a
day at lunch, or add a piece of fruit to
your dinner, she said. You can see
results in as little as six weeks if you
are consistent.
Missouri Senior Games
Kaiser is certainly walking the
walk when it comes to staying
active. In fact, she participates in all
the track and feld events that the
Missouri Senior Games has to offer,
as well as all the swimming events.
In doing so, she is able to qualify for
several in the national competition,
and then pick the ones in which she
will compete there.
In the 2013 National Senior
Games, held in Minneapolis-St.
Paul, she received swimming ribbons
for 100 and 50 breast stroke, 100
butterfy, and the 200 IM (individual
medley, a combination of breast
stroke, butterfy, back stroke and
freestyle), and track and feld ribbons
in triple jump, pole vaulting, several
races, long jump, and the hammer

Senior Expo returns on Thursday, July
24, 9 a.m. to noon, with more speak-
ers and exhibits designed with senior
adults in mind. This years Resource
Fair For Older Adults will be held at
Holiday Inn Route 66, 10709 Watson
Road. Admission is free.
More than 65 vendors will be on
hand providing information on a wide
range of services from adult housing
opportunities to health care tips and
fnancial advice. In addition, free blood
pressure and bone density screenings
will be available.
Attendees can also sample free food
from Costco and The Egg & I, and re-
ceive a number of giveaways.

throw. The next Senior Games will be
held in Cleveland, Ohio, in 2015.
The travel is part of the fun
of it; I get to see the sights of the
United States. I have been to Baton
Rouge, Pittsburgh, Virginia Beach,
and, when the games were in San
Francisco, at Stanford, we turned the
trip into an Alaskan cruise, Kaiser
said.
According to Kaiser, the Missouri
State Senior Games are extremely
well organized, particularly the
events in St. Louis.
We have a really good competition
here; I have a state-level record
for triple jump. In swimming and
track, the records are fantastic. The
competition is excellent. Kaiser
continued.
St. Louis high reputation among
senior athletes might be due, in part,
to the fact that the National Senior
Games began here, in 1985. The
frst two National Senior Olympic
Organization events were held in
St. Louis, in 1987 and 1989. The
United States Olympic Committee
objected to the name, however, and
the group was re-named the U.S.
National Senior Sports Organization
in 1990. Currently, there are 19
sports for senior athletes to choose
from, ranging from the more relaxed,
such as horseshoes, to the more
challenging, such as the triathlon.
Competitors must be at least 50
years of age, but interested young
people often volunteer at the events
to gain insight into the games.
When I turned 50, I thought I
would try it out, Kaiser said. For
the hammer throw, javelin, and shot-
put, the frst time I competed was the
frst time I ever touched them.
I am not ever going to come in
frst place, but I enjoy trying, she
continued. From when I was 50 to
about 60, I tried to compete in all
the local sports they had, because I
wanted to meet the different groups.
I was having fun and meeting
people.
Getting Active
For those who might still be sitting
on the sofa, Kaiser has a few easy
suggestions for getting active.
I like people to put on a
pedometer and wear it for three days
to get a base number, Kaiser said.
Add a few hundred steps a week
and gradually increase. Anything
under 5,000 steps a day is considered
sedentary, and no one wants to be
that.
You need 150 minutes of activity,
but vacuuming is considered an
activity. So is mowing the lawn, she
said. Get your heart pumping a little
harder.
For Kaiser, living a healthy life
means trying new things, and doing
things a little bit better than the last
time. It means making good choices,
choosing to participate in life, and
not being a spectator.

As Sharon Houston walked
out in front of the crowd to speak
about her philosophy of life, a
Maya Angelou quote came to
mind.
She said that surviving
is important but thriving is
elegant, said the Concord Village
resident and retired Catholic
school principal who spent many
years at St. Michaels School in
Shrewsbury. When I read that
line of hers, I thought Thats how
I feel.
She now helps others to thrive
as publicity chair for the Ms.
Missouri Senior Pageant and vice
president of the Missouri Cameo
Club, its sponsoring organization.
Her involvement began in 2008
when Houston decided to take
a shot at the title by competing
in the annual event which bills
itself as showcasing women of
elegance.
That idea of women of elegance
caught my eye and as I learned
about the pageant, I thought
Maybe I could do this with a little
help, recalled Houston. At frst,
you dont know whether to enter
or not but I had a couple of friends
encourage me. My tap teacher at
the time said Ill even help you
with the routine.
Tap dancing is the other big
component of the equation for
Houston. The native St. Louisan
had had a lifelong interest in
dance, from ballet lessons as a
child through jitterbugging in
high school but she didnt take a
liking to the art of tap until she
was past 50 and started attending
classes at St. Louis Community
College-Meramec.
It was just a workout thing to
do once a week, Houston said.
Soon, however, it turned into
more. Not only did she tap for
the talent portion of the 2008
competition, in which she won
Miss Congeniality, but she also
has been one of a number of
dancers who do an annual routine
for the event.
This year 17 dancers, including
Houston, danced to Strike Up the
Band at the annual pageant held
on July 13.
Weve all been contestants in
different years. We always open
the pageant with a number, she
said.
A lot of work was put into this
years event, which took place
at the Florissant Civic Center.
Contestant Deborah Gross was
named queen, Doris Voerster
was frst runner-up and Susan
Pellegrino was named second
runner-up.
Meanwhile, behind the scenes,
Cameo Club members volunteered
as ushers, greeters and backstage
crew.

the event varies. Houston said there
have been as many as 14 in recent
years. This time around the total was
eight. The event is open to females age
60 and over. The winner goes on to Ms.
Senior America.
I think it is really important, for
women especially, to get up every
day and do something to keep their
mind and their body going, she said.
Some people can do more than others
but you have to fnd what you can do,
maybe push yourself a little bit.
The event is only one facet of the
Cameo Club, a non-proft established
in 1989 which does various charitable
events.
Its a real sisterhood. Everybody
supports each other, she said. It is
just a nice group of women from all
walks of life.
She said the pageant gives people a
chance to shine, something she feels is
vital.
Im so happy I did it because after
that weekend you have such a sense
of accomplishment. I got on that stage
by myself and tapped which I never
envisioned before, she said. It is
something that you just cant ever
take away from yourself.
Houston thinks others can have the
same experience she did.
Im hoping that they can think that
if you are 60 or over, you dont have
to sit and watch television, she said.

Three area retirees are among 34
volunteers who are recipients of the
Lieutenant Governors Senior Service
Award.
The honorees are Betty Gunder-
mann of Webster Groves, Roy Luber
of Kirkwood and John Rathman of St.
Louis. All three were nominated by
Joy Brother of Hidden Gems Resale,
a store that sells gently-used clothing,
furniture and merchandise to beneft
Lutheran Senior Services Benevolent
Care.
We feel blessed, said Brother,
director or Move-In Resources and
Resale for Lutheran Senior Services
(LSS). They each have their strengths
which they use to their fullest.
She said Gundermann is really
good at displaying things and mak-

the customers, while Rathman helps
move the furniture.
Hidden Gems Resale, which opened
in May 2013 at 9051 Watson Road in
Crestwood, is the brainchild of Broth-
er. Brother works with seniors when
they move from their homes of many,
many years to a Lutheran Senior Ser-
vices community. The resale shop pro-
vides an outlet for those adults to get
rid of their stuff when they move and
also to help others.
While Brother said Hidden Gems
receives donations from all over the
area, about 75 to 80 percent of dona-
tions come from its seniors.
The shops proceeds beneft Luther-
an Senior Services Benevolent Care
which takes care of people who live in
LSS retirement communities should
they run out of money, Brother said.
All three of our volunteers started
out because of their dedication to Lu-
theran Senior Services, Brother said.
They came in from the beginning (of
Hidden Gems Resale) helping getting
the store ready, really working hard
and continuing to work many, many
hours every week.
The shop has 31 volunteers, but
could use more, Brother noted.

The volunteer-based organization
provides programs, services and en-
gagement opportunists for adults ages
55 years or older. Its services include
medical transportation, resource in-

Adventures in Learning classes are
offered at three community sites: Web-
ster Hills United Methodist Church in
the Christian Life Center, Harrison
Avenue Missionary Baptist Church
in Kirkwood and Douglass Manor in
Webster Groves.
The latest session of Adventures
in Learning at Shepherds Center,
located in the Christian Life Center,
1333 W. Lockwood Ave. in Glendale,
began on July 11. It continues on Fri-
days, 8:30 to noon, through Aug. 1.
The morning begins with breakfast
followed by 50-minute classes at 9:10
a.m., 10:10 a.m. and 11:10 a.m. Class-
es feature a myriad of offerings from
chair yoga to art and history.
The Aug. 1 session will be a sweet
day. At 9:10 a.m., Tom Cooper will
present a program about Candy.
At 10:10 a.m. hear about the 250 St.
Louis Anniversary Cakes around
town and at 11:10 a.m. hear the sweet
sounds of the Good News Quartet. At
noon, stay for the ice cream social cel-
ebrating the sweet 16 anniversary of
Shepherds Center.
In August Damaris Karanja and
Linda Rellergert, nutrition and health
specialists from University of Missou-
ri Extension will teach Its So Easy
To Preserve.
The series features the latest re-
search and methods for home food
preservation. Classes will be held on
Fridays, 10 a.m. to noon, on Aug. 15,
22 and 29. The cost is $15 for one ses-
sion; $40 for all three. To register or

60-Year Reunion For
St. Anthonys High Grads
The 1954 graduation class of St. Anthonys High School, which was located in
South St. Louis, held its 60th consecutive reunion on June 12 at the Missouri
Athletic Club West Many attendees started kindergarten together and then grade
school and high school. Members now live throughout the area. Thirty-one girls

About four in ten people have
known a friend or relative in a coma
or suffering from a terminal illness in
the past fve years a situation that
often prompts discussion of end-of-
life care.
If incapacitated in some form,
would loved ones know your wishes?
Its a scary scenario, which is why
medical professionals say its so im-
portant for individuals to have an ad-
vance medical directive.
Everyone over the age of 18
should have an advance medical di-
rective, said Heather Stock, Palli-
ative Care nurse at SSM St. Clare
Health Center. The main purpose of
the directive is to allow you to pro-
vide guidance to your loved ones and
care givers about how you want to be
treated if your health condition keeps
you from speaking for yourself.
An advance medical directive
(AMD) can be as simple or complex
as an individual wants to make it. It
gives individuals the opportunity to
create the vision for how they would
be cared for in the future especially if
they were to develop a chronic illness,
be severely injured or become unable
to make decisions for themselves.
It will allow you to state in ad-
vance your wishes for health care
treatments you want or dont want,
such as breathing and kidney ma-
chines, feeding tubes and CPR,
Stock said. You also will be able to
express your thoughts about manag-
ing pain, where you want to die, and
if you want to donate your organs or
tissues after death.
Nationwide, fewer than 50 percent
of severely or terminally ill patients
studied had an advance medical di-
rective in their fles. And only 12
percent of patients with one, had dis-
cussed it with their doctor.
I have helped care for patients
with and without a health care di-
rective, and many times when they
dont, the family is left to wonder
what their loved one would have
wanted, said Stock. For those pa-
tients who have the advanced direc-
tive, it makes it much easier for their
loved ones, because they will know it
is what the patient had wanted.
It also is possible to rescind or
change an AMD at any time. Individ-
uals decisions might be different, for
example, if later in life they are diag-
nosed with a chronic illness.
It is better to have one on fle
that you can amend as you progress
through life than not have one at all,
said Stock. Something can happen
in an instant that would limit your
capability to speak for yourself, and
without a directive your loved ones
and care givers may not be aware of
what medical treatments you want
and dont want.

are apparent: good energy levels and
mental clarity.
3. Get A Move On
For an older adult, a daily exercise
routine of 20 minutes a day is opti-
mal.
The National Institute of Health
recommends a program that includes
the four main types of exercise
strength, balance, stretching and
endurance. If a full routine isnt pos-
sible, just taking a fve-minute walk
will help maintain endurance and
strength capabilities that will help
to prevent falls. And, falls are among
the leading reasons why older people
are forced to leave their homes. Exer-
cise also increases lung capacity and
promotes clear thinking.
4. Bottoms Up
Surprising, perhaps, but the dai-
ly water consumption requirements
of older adults is no different than
that of the young. So, the goal is to
drink eight, 8-ounce glasses of water
a day. In older adults, drinking plen-
ty of fuid helps prevent urinary tract
infections, kidney problems, consti-
pation and confusion. As we age, our
sense of thirst dissipates, so seniors
are continuously at risk of becoming
dehydrated, particularly in summer
heat. Drinking lots of water will do
wonders for your well-being!
5. Get Immunized (with Your
Doctors OK)
The ounce of prevention/pound of
cure adage is especially true for se-
niors given that the bodys immune
system weakens with age. Check
with your doctor frst, but help your-
self avoid getting sick by getting an
annual fu shot and pneumonia vac-
cination. Many major pharmacies
and supermarkets offer walk-up fu
vaccination.
6. Make Good Nutrition Your
Mission
To increase energy, boost your im-
mune system and help maintain a
healthy weight, eat plenty of fruits,
vegetables and lean meats. Go light
on the sodium since it contributes to
hypertension, a common malady for
seniors. Treat yourself to sweets, on
occasion. Taking care of your whole
body by minding what you put in it
is one of the best ways to assure that
you will enjoy each day to the fullest.

itll return the favor, keeping you
