RESOLUTION TO AMEND NATIONAL TRAFFIC CODE TO REFLECT
TODAY'S PRIORITIES
WHEREAS, The national US transportation code was basically
written in 1944-48, and reflects the national priorities of that time; WHEREAS, The national traffic code is designed to speed cars along, at the expense of those persons who are not in cars; WHEREAS, The code is the reason transportation engineers routinely give for denying requests for stop lights, stop signs, crosswalks, and lower speed limits; and WHERAS, National priorities have changed: we now need to cut motor vehicle emissions of greenhouse gases and poisons, conserve fuel, and persuade people to walk and bicycle instead of driving motor vehicles; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the national traffic code be emended to reflect the national change in priorities; RESOLVED, That the national highway speed limit be reduced to 55 miles per hour; RESOLVED, That existing roads and bridges be repaired before new ones are built, and accommodation for pedestrians and bicyclists added during repairs; RESOLVED, That bridges and roads unable to carry motor traffic be reused, when feasible, for limited pedestrian and bicycle traffic.
