A Casa da Msica, com o apoio da Cmara Municipal de Gaia, oferece
cidade um festival que coloca o fado no centro de uma experincia que se
completa com as maravilhas da gastronomia e do patrimnio histrico,
contando ainda com o envolvimento das principais caves produtoras de
Vinho do Porto.
Smbolo, por excelncia, da identidade nacional, o fado aqui desviado
das tradicionais casas ou salas de espectculo para se expor ao ar livre,
em concertos gratuitos que apresentam nomes consagrados e valores
emergentes. Os ns de tarde so dedicados s novas vozes, com 27
concertos em vrios palcos ao longo do cais e nas caves. Depois do jantar
beira-rio, ca em aberto o convite para uma viagem de telefrico at Serra
do Pilar, cenrio de grande romantismo que fecha com chave de ouro cada
jornada de fado e contribui para inscrever esta experincia na memria
de quem a viva. A sobem ao palco Mariza, Gisela Joo, Caman e Cristina
Branco, estes ltimos acompanhados pela Orquestra Sinfnica do Porto
Casa da Msica.
O Cais de Fado faz do centro histrico de Gaia um destino de eleio,
combinando a riqueza patrimonial com a magia do momento, num

Casa da Msica, with the support of Gaia City Council, oers the city a festival that puts
fado at the heart of an experience enhanced by the wonders of gastronomy and historic
heritage, which also enjoys the involvement of the main producing Port Wine cellars.
An indisputable symbol of national identity, fado is taken out of the traditional fado
houses and concert venues to display in the open air, in free concerts presenting
revered names and emerging talents. The early evenings are devoted to new voices,
with 27 concerts on various stages along the quayside and in the cellars. Afer dinner
on the riverbank, there is an open invitation to take the cable car up to Serra do Pilar, a
highly romantic setting that ends each day of fado on a high note and ensures that this
experience will be engraved in the memories of all those who witness it. There, Mariza,
Gisela Joo, Caman and Cristina Branco take to the stage, these last accompanied by
Orquestra Sinfnica do Porto Casa da Msica.
Cais de Fado turns the historic centre of Gaia into a choice tourist destination,
combining the wealth of heritage with the magic of the moment. This concept also
extends to the approach to fado itself a mixture of tradition and irreverence.

When sung by Diogo Aranha, fado evokes the nostalgia
of lost times, of bullghts and Portuguese masculine
tradition, transporting us to Lisbon and the atmosphere
of typical fado nights there. Having been singing for two
decades, he is a frequent presence in the most celebrated
fado houses in Porto and Lisbon, as well as an organiser
of fado-related events. He is responsible for the Fado
Mesa nights in Restaurante Casa da Msica, where he
regularly performs.

Joana Cardoso has been singing fado since 2003 and is
currently working on her rst album. A wonderful voice
and heartfelt performances are her trademark, causing
amazement whenever she performs on the various stages
in the region and leading her to win over audiences in
countries such as France and Switzerland.

surgiu quando cantou o clebre Barco
Negro, enquanto membro de uma
tuna universitria. Estreou-se como
fadista em 2006 e desde ento tem sido
convidada para se apresentar em todo
o pas. Em 2009 gravou o seu primeiro
disco, Fado Sem Tempo, que lhe abriu
as portas internacionalizao. No
seu repertrio destacam-se os poemas
originais interpretados em melodias de
fados tradicionais.
Cludia Madurs passion for fado emerged
when she sang the famous Barco Negro,
as a member of a university music group.
She made her debut as a fado singer in
2006 and since then has been invited
to perform all over the country. In 2009
she recorded her rst album, Fado Sem
Tempo, which opened the doors for her
internationally. Her repertoire is notable
for its original poems interpreted in
traditional fado melodies.

A partir da tradio, viajando pela Pennsula Ibrica,
estes msicos transformam e recriam o fado dando-lhe a
densidade do amenco, sem nunca quem ouve achar-se
longe da branca, mgica, viajante mas melanclica
Lisboa. O Fado Violado nasceu em 2008, fundado por Ana
Pinhal e Francisco Almeida quando residiam em Sevilha
para estudarem amenco.
Starting with tradition, and taking it around the Iberian
Peninsula, these musicians transform and recreate fado,
giving it the density of amenco, but without those who
hear it feeling too far removed from the white walls, magic
and melancholy of Lisbon. Fado Violado began life in 2008,
founded by Ana Pinhal and Francisco Almeida while they were
studying Flamenco in Seville.

fado. The singer, artist-in-residence at one of Portos
most emblematic fado houses, sets sail from the most
authentic fado tradition, paying tribute to the musical
legacy of Cidade Invicta the Unvanquished City to
nally drop anchor at a quay of new ado.

crtica e por artistas como Caman. Sem desvios
nem artifcios, a fadista natural de Barcelos
parte duma formao tradicional e mergulha
na gnese do fado, reencontrando a sua
autenticidade e questionando os seus excessos e
maneirismos.
Gisela Joo has been hailed one of the most
important voices to emerge in the fado world
since Amlia. Her debut album was released a
year ago and afer only two weeks it reached the
top of the national charts, and was celebrated
by critics and artists such as Caman. Without
digression or aectation, the fado singer from
Barcelos takes her traditional training and
plunges into the origins of fado, reconnecting
with its authenticity and questioning its excesses
and mannerisms.

A fadista portuense Alexandra Guimares integrou
o elenco de uma das mais antigas e prestigiadas
casas de fado do Porto, o Mal Cozinhado, e actua
regularmente por todo o pas. Participou em festivais
como Le Festival sur le Niger (Mali) e Festival Ollin
Kan (Mxico), de onde nasceu o projecto Seistanto
Mundo, que uniu o fado tradicional msica
nostlgica mexicana. Em 2012 participou na Semana
Portuguesa em Varsvia.
Porto fado singer Alexandra Guimares joined the cast
of one of the oldest, most prestigious fado houses in
Porto, Mal Cozinhado, and regularly performs all over
the country. She has taken part in festivals such as Le
Festival sur le Niger (Mali) and Ollin Kan (Mexico),
which gave rise to the project Seistanto Mundo,
which brings together fado with traditional Mexican
nostalgic music. In 2012 she took part in Portuguese
Week in Warsaw.

tradicional portugus). No mbito do fado, apresentou

Rita Ruivo started out by joining traditional
Portuguese music projects, collaborating on the album
Ceia Louca by Brigada Victor Jara, in 2003. She has
also recorded with Joo Gentil (ConLatinidade, 2011)
and Miguel Calhaz (Estas Palavras, 2012). She has
been involved with the groups Jogo de Damas (vocal
jazz) and Segue-me Capela (traditional Portuguese
songbook). In terms of fado, she presented the project

In the concert Fados a Preto e Branco, the title of his
third album released in 2013, Rui Oliveira performs
traditional fados of obscure origin, songs popularised
in the theatre during the latter half of the 20th century
and songs inspired by fado written by present-day
composers such as Caetano Veloso and Fausto Bordalo
Dias. With his feet rmly planted in tradition, Rui
Oliveira stands out for his constant search for new
paths in the expression of fado.

vdeos com a direco artstica de Vincent Pierard.
The Com~tradio project presents its new album of
original pieces and traditional fados inspired by the
musical experiences of its members ( jazz, classical,
world/folk...). Founded in 2011, the group is based in
Brussels and performs every month in the fado house
Chez Luis, devoting itself to promoting Portuguese
culture in countries such as Belgium, Netherlands,
Germany and France. In 2013, it recorded a series of
videos with the artistic direction of Vincent Pierard.

the voices of two gures who have marked the last two

corao da zona histrica de Vila Nova de

The famous Taylors Cellars are located in

The majestic building of Casa Ramos
Pinto combines its cellars with a museum
housed in the old oces, preserved since
the thirties, displaying a wide variety of
exhibits relating to the companys history.
It is a true palace where visitors feel they
are travelling back in time.

capacidade de armazenamento em
madeira na zona histrica de Vila Nova
de Gaia, e continua a ser um local de
produo, onde o vinho lentamente
envelhecido. A visita guiada uma
experincia enriquecedora, a que poder
associar uma prova de vinhos ou um
piquenique num acolhedor ptio sombra
da vinha.
The Cockburns cellars have the greatest
storage capacity for wooden barrels in
the historic quarter of Vila Nova de Gaia
and continue to be a place of production,
where the wine is slowly aged. The guided
tour is an enriching experience, and can
be linked to a wine tasting session or a
picnic in a comfortable patio in the shade
of the vines.

of D. Lus Bridge (Jardim do Morro Station) and the

getting around the festival and discovering all its
