Malawi is one of the most poorest country and my challange was to reform that
traditional image. However the actual condition is quite harsh, and haphazard, existing
travel service is dull, information remains oral-basis, or donation-basisi, schedules are
crippled by political and economical chaos...

When in Rome
Buy local produce, hire a local guide, shop at local markets.
Support local activities, festivals and enterprize. You'll
discover more about local culture and lives, and they will
earn an income.
Use public transport, hire a bike or walk when convenient
- its a great way to meet local people on their terms and
reduce emissions.
Avoid buying products made from endangered or wild
animals, plants, hard woods or ancient artefacts.
Be friendly and open minded. Many customs and traditions
that might seem weird to you are entirely
Hydrate yourself but use water sparingly. Minimize the use
of resources.
- Don't insist on a daily bath. Its very precious in many
countries and tourists tend to use far more than local people.
Avoid obvious displays of wealth or handing out money,
sweets or pen to children. Such activities create immediate
barriers and encourage begging and reliance on hand-outs.
Try to blend in and find an appropriate charity.
Stay on the trails when walking or hiking. This will help
preserve the natural beauty of the land.
Avoid feeding animals. This could disturb the natural eating
process and can make some animals aggressive.
Be respectful of local cultures, traditions and holy places - if
in doubt ask advice or don't visit.
Dress and act appropriately for the place that you are
visiting- do a little background reading before you go.
Be respectful of local peoples' etiquette.
Remember that local people have different ways of thinking
and concepts of time, this just makes them different not
wrong - cultivate the habit of asking questions (rather than
the Western habit of knowing the answers).
Refrain from "hard bargaining". We all want that great deal
but extra dollar wont hurt you, be helpful to the local vendor
rather than fooling them. Remember a dollar or two means a
lot more to them than it does to you.

road to Monkey Bay is a place called Mwala Wa
Mphini which means rock of the tribal face scars.
The place is about a hundred
metres of the road, so
watch the signpost.
The rocks with its Scars is
looking like they were
done by an artist but
they are geological
formations.
Cape Maclear was the frst site of the
Livingstonia Mission, established in
1875 and abandoned a few years later,
due to the high
incidence of malaria in
this area. Several of the mission-
aries die of malaria.

In a moment your holiday activities will be
arranged by the guest house, beach boys & BBQ
boys (who cruise beach to stand by to organize
your meal, accompanied by village band that
plays hand made instruments).

Cichlids
African cichlids are known for their beautiful patterns and array of colors
that are not typical to most freshwater fish. No other group of freshwater
fish are more colorful than African cichlids. These fish are simply
fascinating to observe and they will amaze you with their social behavior
and the degree of intelligence they possess.
In order to protect their young, cichlids display some of the most
entertaining and fascinating behaviour of the freshwater fishes.
The male fish digs out a cave (nest) for the female fish and lures her. After
the male fertilizes eggs, female picks up the eggs in her mouth and carries
them until they hatch.
The eggs will hatch between 10-15 days after fertilization. The female
then hold the babies in her mouth for up to two more weeks, occasionally
letting them out to feed them, but will suck them back in when danger
threatens.
The fry of mouth-brooding cichlids are fascinating to watch as they swim
in tight ball-like schools and rush into their mothers mouth all at once.

National Game
Bawo (originally bao, Swahili for "board) is an African chess or East
African traditional mancala board game ".
As with most traditional games, the rules were only preserved by oral
tradition. (Mobile app has already been downloadable.)
Bao board consists in four rows of eight holes. All the holes are rounded,
but the fourth from the right in the middle rows, that is squarish and
called nyumba ("home"), and ne or two larger stock pits are sometimes
positioned at the left and/or right or both extremes of the board.
The object of the game is to empty your opponent's front row, or deprive
him of any legal moves, while still protecting your own front row.

of Malawi. Among them wooden
toys of "Toys 'R' Us" stand out with
no doubt. Those are near perfect
replicas of the real cars, 4x4s, Land
Rover, bicycles etc.. Absolutely
fantastic and lovable. Don't miss
their yellow sign!
Malawian Chief Chairs is a popular souvenir.
The primary woods used to make the chief
chairs are Red or Black Mahogany, Euphorbia
and Afrormosia. Chairs come in two sections
for easy transport so that it's literally director's
chair.

Fort J ohnston was established to limit the slave
traffic moving northwards towards the Lake and on to
Zanzibar. It was named after Sir Harry J ohnston, the
British Consul General of Nyasaland.

Mangochi district has three discrete parts. A
commercial center spreads on the west side of
Shire River toward Blantire. On east side there is a
spiritual center of Mangochi, Mangochi Hill and
Namizimu Forest along the Great Rift. And,
Lakeshore between Monkey Bay and Mangochi Is

Take a bicycle taxi to the
entrance of mountain path (a few
minutes, walkable distance if you
know the place to stop).
Itll take half an hour to get to the
nearest village, Chizale. When
you reach there greet with villagers and village
headman. You can go back to trail and proceed till

Mangochi was once an important slaving
centre and later a colonial administrative
town and restricted slave trade. During
colonial times it was called Fort Johnston
(named after British general), It developed
as an agricultural centre and has marine-
engineering shops.
When travelling from Monkey Bay traveller
will enjoy dramatic change of scenery in
rapid succession from marsh to savannah
and into riverside town.
This hotchkiss gun stood on the
British gun boat HMS Gwendolyn
which patrolled Lake Malawi from
1889 to 1940.
There proudly remain 3 guns in town, one at
Clock Towe, another at museum, and last one
at the entrance of police.
MV Vipya shipwreck was the worst
shipping disaster on the lake
which happened on 30th July

Sweet Land
Likoma meaning Sweet Land. It is named after its special-
ity mango, it produces the sweetest mango in the country.
Likoma Island is the larger of two inhabited islands situated
on the eastern side of Lake Malawi, close to the Mozam-
bique coast and surrounded, in fact, by Mozambican
territorial waters.
The main draw for travellers is the island's isolation and the
difculty in arriving and departing, however ofers one of

the most spectacular innovative resorts with rocky promontories, golden
beaches and huge baobab trees and mango bush.
Unspoiled tourist destination
Likoma is described as an idyllic island.
Development on Likoma has been sluggish. There
are still no paved roads and very few motor
vehicles. Large hills and forests remain unspoiled.
But on the other hand it encouraged high quality
eco-lodge development. Although electricity is
usually switched of at night and on at 7 am. as
routine (simply depends on Ilala's diesel delivery), water station has
commenced pomping, mobile phones and dongles for Internet access are in
use, museum and new lodges have built. Its still slow but for certain that
positive change has been made recently.
Watersports
Unlike some other parts of the lake, the water
here is still blessedly free of bilharzia,
therefore its a perfect place for diving, snorkelling and sailing. It's safe to swim
but there are also crocodiles on Likoma Island. You must be cautious about
crocs especially during rainy season. If you are not sure whether its ok or not to
swim ask the locals.

Chizumulu "Cheezie" Island is quieter counter-
part of Likoma Island. It is smaller than Likoma
and even more remote, it shouldn't be missed.

WHY IS SHE SO ATTRACTIVE?
The MV Ilala, a 620-ton vessel, built in 1949 and named after the legendary David
Livingstones initial burial place in Zambia (Nyasaland at the time), is a cargo providing
an essential lifeline service to local communities along the Lake. (Note that it is the only
afordable way to Likoma Island but it is not a luxury service.)
It is famous for slow journey, which provides absolutely unforgettable cultural
experience. Relax and enjoy watching the magnifcent scenery at the edge of the lake go

MV Chauncy Maples is a motor ship and
former steamship that was launched on
6 June 1901 and named after Bishop
Chauncy Maples, an Anglican mission-
ary, later Bishop of Nyasaland. In 1967
the Malawian government bought her
and replaced her steam engine with a
diesel engine. Removed steam engine is
preserved in the Lake Malawi Museum at
Mangochi,
After more than one hundred years' service
she had been restored for use as a foating
medical clinic. An onboard medical team
will provide support and treatment to one
of the world's poorest nations. Recommis-
sioning the Chauncy Maples would ofer the prospect of free
treatment for common diseases, simple surgical operations

Malawi is a real jewel for those who do
visit. It is known as 'the warm heart of
Africa' largely due to the exceptionally
friendly and peaceful nature of its
people and the fact that so many who
visit the country fall instantly in love
with it.
However, Malawi has not been a
premier African tourist destination.
According to WHOs estimation there is
just one doctor for every 40,000 people
in Malawi. (1 per 3,000 in Nigeria, 1 per
400 in the UK.)
This fact is indeed mirrors of
Malawi's current situation.
What can we make of it...?
Tens of thousands of Malawians die of
Aids every year. A great number of
people fall victim to the epidemic of
life-threatening disorder as typifed by
malaria and typhoid. Those losses are
supposed to be preventable.
Over one third of Malawi's population
does not have access to safe water.
Electrifcation rate is 7%. Average life
expectancy at birth is 51.7 years. Why
sould these happen?!
Although all health workers have some
degree of English profciency, domes-
tic medical care industry has little
effect. There is a severe shortage of
medicine, essential medical
equipment, and doctors. It is
understandable that young Malawian
cherish hopes to go to the bountiful,
promised land outside.
Flaw in basic infrastructure, fuel and
foreign currency shortages, popula-
tion growth, reduction of life
expectancy. Many statuses continue
to hamper life-saving communication
and in the result standard medications
are not consistently available even in
urban areas. Rural areas are much
more so.
There may not be any answer, but it is
for sure that tourism is a bridge to a
hope for a change amid Malawi's harsh
reality.

The Malawi Internatonal Trade Fair (MITF) is an annual trade promoton event organized by the Malawi
Confederaton of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI). The MITF brings together exhibitors from

*Chilimika Dance - A secular dance from unique to the Nkhata Bay District, performed mostly by young Tonga
women and girls. It once appeared politcal events and established as dance actvity.

Started in 1984. About 30 - 50 boats contest, the start and the nish will be in Mangochi and Chintechi
(traditonally), But this years marathon will have no rest day. The nal route is not known as yet, and
some changes will be made to sail to either Likoma Island or a resort on the Mozambican coast.
Originally it was a limited race to porters who guide tourists up the mountains, today, it atracts more than
300 localand internatonal runners from all over the world. The 25km race follows a challenging route
through a protected Forest Reserve, startng and nishing at the Likhubula Forestry Oce in Mulanje.
Runners head into the mountains via a tortuously rocky route to the 2500m Chambe Plateau, contnues to
Lichenya Plateau eventually reaching the heady heights of Malawi's highest mountain, and then returns to
Likhubula.

A long-distance race along the Viphya mountains. This year will be for the eighth tme (annual). Due to the
races huge success, it has been internatonally accredited which means that this race can count for
natonal teams as a part of Olympic qualicaton.

schools and conserve the indigenous forest in the area.

The excitng challenge involves a 370km (250 miles) cycle through the stunning forests and mountainous
terrain of Malawi. Partcipants will support LCD(Link Community Development)s aims of improving access for
primary pupils to quality educaton in Malawi.
Ingoma is a famous war dance performed among the Ngoni of Mzimba and Mchinji. Their costume includes a
headgear made of feathers, beads wrapped across the chest and ornaments made of animal skin.
* Ngoma is also a dance of Ngoni of Ntcheu, even performed at wedding ceremonies, funerals, as well as at
natonal occasions, for entertainment.
Center has established in 1976, under Fr. Bouchers guidance grown from an art co-operatve to a
vibrant cultural centre. Performers from surrounding villages. Dedicated to preserve culture of the
Chewa, Yao and Ngoni ethic groups and pass to future generatons.
Malipenga dance is performed by amongst the Yao and
Tonga tribe, dancers are in dress of imitaton of the old
military ocers uniform. Beni dance is performed on police
uniform. And Vinbuza (Rumpi, Sept) dances with bizarre
christanity also repesents Malawian character of fusion of
inuence from outside.

Gule Wamkulu
No one knows for sure who they are.
No one knows for sure where they come from or where they go.
When they dance they kick up the dust in order to help disguise
themselves.
One thing is sure. They are surrounded by mystery and intrigue.
The Gule Wamkulu dance is symbolic as a medium between the
ancestral world of spirits and the mundane present, and
symbolizes the spectrum of lifes emotions and actions.
Gule Wamkulu is both a secret cult and ritual dance practiced
among the Chewa people. The performance of the Gule Wam-
kulu at the end of the initiation procedure to celebrate the
young mens integration into adult society. The initiation is held
in the season following the harvest, also weddings and funer-
als.
The Nyau (their secret society) dancers wear costumes and
masks made of wood and straw, representing a great variety of
characters, such as wild animals, spirits of the dead, slave trad-
ers as well as more recent figures such as Obama.
Despite the efforts of Christian missionaries to ban this practice
in communities, it managed to survive under British colonial
rule by adopting some aspects of Christianity.

symbolizes the spectrum of lifes emotions and actions.
Gule Wamkulu is both a secret cult and ritual dance practiced
among the Chewa people. The performance of the Gule Wam-
kulu at the end of the initiation procedure to celebrate the
young mens integration into adult society. The initiation is held
in the season following the harvest, also weddings and funer-
als.
The Nyau (their secret society) dancers wear costumes and
masks made of wood and straw, representing a great variety of
characters, such as wild animals, spirits of the dead, slave trad-
ers as well as more recent figures such as Obama.
Despite the efforts of Christian missionaries to ban this practice
in communities, it managed to survive under British colonial
rule by adopting some aspects of Christianity.

Access to town of Liwonde is relatively easy compared to
other reserves. From Liwonde Town to main gate is 6km,
from there to campsite is 28 km. The fun way to access the
camp is by taking boat. Self-driving visiters and public bus
passenger can use Mangochi Road to get Makanga Gate.
There are luxury safari lodge, self-catering chalets and
cheap campsite inside both gates. You can also stay in
town of Liwonde.
Situated on southern end of Lake Malombe where Shire
River begins. Combination of river bank and mopane
bush creates rich environment. Shire River is home
to hippo, crocodileand waterfoul in particular, and
mopane bush support large population of elephant.

The turn-off on M1 is between Chikwawa and Nchalo. On
the way to the park gate you will cross extensive sugar cane

lodges and campsite.

Lifupa Conservation Lodge is the only lodge in the park overlooks Kasuni Dam, offers accommodation to all budgets.
The second largest NP is located west of the central
region, extending along the Zambian border. It is full of
woodland thickets and streams. Although it's famed for its
population of elephant, there are plenty of water holes that
river channels and dams make, in addition, seasonal marsh
so-called dambos to enrich its large range of biodiversity.

The turn-off to Cape Maclear on the main road is 10 km
west from Monkey Bay. There's no formal public transporta-
tion from thereso you may take pick-up or hitch at junction.
Cape Maclear have all range of accommodation options. All
of those offers great view or lake.
Notable is 34-square-mile (87-km

Heritage Site, with million-year-old Lake Malawi and its
extraordinary fish population. Over 400 species of cichlids
alone. Cape Maclear is a heaven for watersports enthusiasts.

Lying in the hills of the Rift Valley Escarpment, in central Malawi. The scenery is dominated by the
Chipata Mountain, and the Bua River, with it's many waterfalls. The range of mammals is as good as
anywhere in Malawi. Birdlife is prolific with giant kingfishers and palm nut vultures among the 130
recorded species.

A short way south of Nyika, a low-lying plain and marsh area. It has substantial large mammal

The second largest and most southerly lake of Malawi surrounded by flat plains and isolated hills.
It's very shallow with no known outlet. The drainage basin attract both resident and migratory
waterbirds.

Community-owned reserve, teeming with birds. The swamp-like lake covered in water lilies and

been introduced and roam freely within the reserve.

Near Lengwe National Park. Small private reserves set in the middle of a sugar cane plantation of

Is the flood plain and swamp of the River Shire. North part of this permanent marsh is a maze of
shallow channels, south part water is thick with water hyacinth and waterlily.
The name "Elephant Marsh" was given by David Livingstone. which used to be home to thousands
of elephant but is now more a birding destination.
Mwabvi Wildlife Reserve is located in the southern most tip of Malawi in Nsanje District. Malawi's
smallest national park (135km), and its least accessible. This remoteness adds to Mwabvi's charm.
New game roads have opened up the area and sightings of magnificent sable, kudu, impala, buffalo
and other antelope are matched by the wide variety of birdlife.

The reserve is made up of mature miombo woodlands and granite topped hills that contrast with

In the north are the unique Nyika Plateau and the Vwasa
Reserve. These complement each other, one a highland, the
other a lowland marsh area.
The central region has two vast game areas; Kasungu National
Park in the west and Nkhotakota Reserve in the east, near the
Lake.
The best known national park is Liwonde, along the River Shire,
but there are also three game areas further south in the Shire
Lowlands: Lengwe National Park and the wildlife reserves of
Majete and Mwabvi.
Lake Malawi National Park at Cape Maclear is the worlds first
freshwater national park.
