How to get out of a career rut

Assess your career - Do a current assessment of where your career is currently relative to your potential,
individual capabilities and peer group from college or who joined the company at the same time as you
Set realistic goals - Set realistic short to mid-term goals of where you would like to be in your career.
"The goals should be realistic keeping in mind the context of your industry and organization, i.e. if your
company is down-sizing, you cannot expect to have dramatic growth," you should also regularly evaluate
your progress against these goals.
Upgrade skill sets - It is recommended that a professional look at constant upgrading one's skill sets in
line with the industry requirements and one's own company. This shall keep one ahead and alive in the
race
Increase visibility - volunteer for projects which have a wide impact across the company.
Network - Various social and professional networking sites allow you to network and also help you look at
newer opportunities, allowing you to change course.
Accept challenging roles - Step outside your comfort zone and be open to accepting a challenging lateral
role. This gives you an alternate route to progress up the ladder in the longer term
Get mentored - If you think you are facing a problem in understanding what you need to do, seek
professional help.
Learn from winners - see what and how do they do things differently from you.
Apply for a job - assess your market value, strengths and areas of development
Have self belief - extremely crucial to the overall development and helps avoid the situation of 'steaming'
out.
Knowledge is the new capital, but its worthless unless its accessible, communicated, and enhanced.
Benjamin Franklin, one of the founding fathers of the Uited States also said, An investment in knowledge
pays the best interest.
Identifying waste is a skill which all employees should develop.

The way words are spoken has a distinctive impact on people. What you say is less important than how
you say it. Psychologists believe that uttered words contribute only 7 % to the impact they create. Tone
of voice however contributes 38 %. It is evident therefore, that how I say what I say is more significant
that mere words I employ.
