HMC Products
PACK EXPO 2010
Booth E-6763
To accommodate increasingly diverse packages in todays consumer
marketplace, manufacturers require high-performing, flexible machinery.
HMC Products specializes in manufacturing flexible packaging
machinery for horizontal form, fill and seal machines. The company is
recognized for its quality machinery, capable of fast product changeovers
and high levels of accuracy, efficiency, and flexibility.
On display at PACK EXPO 2010 is the new HMC Pouchmaster horizontal
form, fill and seal machine that can package a wide variety of products
in a laminated pouch. This hybrid machine offers dual SERCOS that can
run the machine into two halves, both running the fill and making the
bag. The machine can make the bags with the fitment and not fill the
bag, then turn around and fill the bags when put back on. The machine is
designed to package many products including soaps, shampoos, cake
mixes, snack mixes, pet food, towelettes, medical devices, and many
others.
The HMC Pouchmaster forms the sides and bottom of the product bag
from one roll of film. A forming tool can be added to provide a standup
gusset pouch. In addition, a zipper is often applied to the film. The
product is then delivered into the pouch accommodating pouch sizes
from 2 inches by 2 inches up to 12 inches wide by 13 inches with a 3-inch
plus gusset. With the ability to complete up to 150 bags per minute
single-up and 300 bags per minute triple-up, the Pouchmaster offers the
flexibility to meet a variety of customer needs.

Our selection to use a Rockwell Automation solution is
because of the industrys respect for Allen-Bradley
products, said Jeff Berg, product development manager
at HMC Products. Our end users request the company
based on its reputation and excellent customer service.
Using the Allen-Bradley L45 CompactLogix programmable
automation controller (PAC) from Rockwell Automation
allows the machine to leverage the Logix Control Platform.
Using two SERCOS on this machine merges the two into
one controller, thus making it faster and easier to build the
machine. This platform is a sophisticated system of
scalable control, networking, visualization and
information technologies that assist in providing
unparalleled functionality and flexibility. The control
system can manage discrete, motion and drive capabilities
using one common platform reducing the end
customers training costs and panel space.
Additionally, the machine uses three Allen Bradley Kinetix
2000 multi-axis servo drives. Used on the machines main
drive, web feed, and bag clamp index, the servo drives are
fully integrated to provide smooth, reliable operation with
the Pouchmasters existing less complex mechanical
functions.
The HMC Pouchmaster uses an Allen-Bradley PanelView
Plus human-machine interface (HMI) that is tightly
integrated with the CompactLogix PAC, thus easing
changeover selection. Tight integration helps to maximize
uptime while minimizing time spent on maintenance.
Other Allen-Bradley components featured on the machine
include push buttons, switches, terminals, stack lights,
safety relays and VFDs .
Standardizing on a Rockwell Automation control solution,
HMCs customers can take advantage of faster startup
time, reduced spare parts and improved equipment
reliability, resulting in a competitive advantage for the
user.
