MODULE 5: SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP

LESSON 1: COMMUNITY AS A CONTEXT OF TEACHING AND LEARNING

What is a community?
- A group of people living together in one place, esp. one practicing common ownership
- All the people living in a particular area or place: "local communities"


Different Kinds of Communities Students Come From
-Urban -Rural -Indigenous -Elite or Rich -Squatter area





































Different Aspects of Each Kind of Community
1. Social Features - refer to the typical relationships of people in a community
2. Political Features - refer to how power is distributed in a community.
3. Economic Features - refer to the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services.
4. Cultural Features - refer to the beliefs, norms or rule of conduct, and values in a community.


The Community Resources
Every community has resources. These can be in the form of human, social, material, financial
and natural/physical environment assessts.
Human resources - refer to the skills, talents, qualities, and attitudes of the people living
in the community.
Social assets - relationships, rules, establish course of action and practices.
Material resources - man-made things such as equipment, property, facilities tools, etc.
Financial assets - consist of monetary, income or cash resources.
Natural resources - physical environment.

LESSON 2: COMMUNITY-BASE ROLES OF THE TEACHER

Community Expectations of Teachers
Teachers play various roles beyond the boundaries of the school. Local communities, which are
just a block from, turn to teachers for a lot of needs.
Teachers are expected by the community to perform other functions besides teaching.
These other functions are as follows: agent of change, legal counsel, personi n authority,
source of knowledge.


Teachers as Members of the Country
Teaching is not merely a profession, it is a vocation. It is a calling, a summons or strong
inclination to educate young people.
As a citizen of the community the teacher mus assume the following roles:
1. surrogate mother/father
2. role model
3. community organizer


Teachers as Citizens of the Country
As a teacher, we have duties that are related to our being a citizen of a larger community, the
State.
These citizen-duties include rendering services during
Local / National Elections
National census of population
information campaign of other government agencies
Drug Education Campaign, Conducting Government campaigns










LESSON 3 : THE SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP

The Role of the School Community
The school is one of the most important institutions in any community.
Article XIV, Section 3, (2) of the 1986 Constitution states that all schools shall aim to inculcate
patriotism and nationalism, foster love of humanity, respect for human rights, appreciation of the role
of national heroes in the historical development of the country, teach the rights and duties of
citizenship, strengthen ethical and spiritual values, develop moral character and personal discipline,
encourage critical and creative thinking, broaden scientific and technological knowledge, and promote
vocational efficiency.

The School Partners and key Stakeholders


Achieving-Friendly School Through School and Community Partnership.
A child-friendly school is a second home to children with caring and motivated teachers, with
families and community helping each other so that they can become the best that they can be.
A child friendly school;
consults parents and invites their opinions regarding school policy and activities;
holds regular dialogues with parents and collaborates with them to encourage their children to
practice at home what they learn in school;
cares about the children's safety not only within the school premises but also on their way to
and from school;
enlist the support of community institutions and individuals for its projects and activities for
children; and
acts on behalf of and upholds the interest of children in community assemblies.




LESSON 4 - PARENT-TEACHER-COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION (PTCA)

What PTCA is?

The Parent-Teacher-Community Association (PTCA) is a cooperative organization within a
given school dedicated to the interest of children. It is composed not only of the parents and teachers
but also of interested people from the community, including local officials.
