The Lannon Stonemen finished fifth in the
Land O'Lakes West Division regular season
standings with an 11-7 record. The Stonemen
ended the regular season with a 4-2 win over
North Lake Aug. 3. Nick Erd allowed two hits
while recording three strikeouts over three
innings for the win.
The Sussex Cardinals finished the regular
season with a 4-3 win over Menomonee Falls
Aug. 3. Travis Thompson recorded seven
strikeouts over nine innings for the win. Sussex
was tied with Lannon for fifth place while
Menomonee Falls finished 11th with a 5-3
record.
The Land O'Lakes playoffs begin Aug. 9,
with Lannon playing the West Bend 7 Up at
Carl Kuss Field in West Bend at noon while
Sussex will play the Brookfield Blue Sox at

Sun PrairieJerome A. Duke OConnor,
age 80, formerly of Hartford and
Germantown, passed away on Thursday, July
31, 2014, at Prairie Gardens Assisted Living.
He was born on July 14, 1934, to George and
Dorothy (nee Lackas) OConnor.
Duke liked to be in charge and get things
done. When others were wringing their hands,
Duke got out a legal pad. In his personal and
professional life, he went to the heart of any
problem and wrote out a plan in his bold and
affirmative handwriting that always started
with step one. The calendar he left behind
shows many such plans. His leadership skills
were honed on the gridiron as a standout high
school athlete for the Hartford, Wis., Orioles.
This earned him a football scholarship to
attend the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
He later earned a masters degree in public
administration. While his education was impor-
tant to him, his approach to life came largely
from his football training and by watching his
beloved Green Bay Packers, especially during
the Vince Lombardi years. He began his
career as a manager for Libbys Foods in
Hartford and was elected to the Hartford City
Council as a young man. Duke became a fix-
ture in City Hall and went on to work as the
Hartford city clerk-treasurer, a job where he
was called upon to make a big play as an
election official that sealed a place in history.
The movement to extend the right to vote to
18-year- olds led ten 18-year-olds to show up
and cast ballots in a Hartford school referen-
dum on July 20, 1970, after the president
signed a new federal law on June 22, 1970.
The ten votes were already cast before poll
workers realized the effective date for the law
was Jan. 1, 1971. Duke immediately called a
halt to the voting while he contacted officials in
Washington, D.C. With guidance from
Washington, he determined that the only way
to prevent a local political crisis was to ran-
domly draw down the ballots by the number of
votes inappropriately cast by the 18-year-olds.
Time magazine, at that time, cited this as the
first instance of teenage voting, although ineli-
gible, in the United States.
With that beginning, Duke had a success-
ful career advising local officials in manage-
ment and leadership as a section chief for the
Department of Local Affairs and Development
under Gov. Patrick Lucey. Duke later worked
as a consultant to local government, as Village
Administrator for Germantown, and as Town
Manager for Richfield. He was a well-regard-
ed Realtor in more recent years. He was
respected by local government officials and
municipal managers throughout the state.
He is survived by his loving children,
Edward Patrick (Kim) of Sun Prairie, Kathleen
Mary of Land O Lakes, Annette Marie (John)
Talis of Madison, and Michael John of West
Bend; cherished grandchildren, Reilly, Kieran,
Aidan, Miriam and Caroline; dear sisters,
Carolyn Scheerer and Patricia OConnor; and
his brother-in-law, Charles Schwalbe. Jerome is
further survived by other relatives and many
friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents,
George and Dorothy OConnor; his siblings,
Mary Schwalbe and Edward OConnor; and
a brother-in-law, Vincent Scheerer.
The Mass of Christian Burial for Jerome
was held on Tuesday, August 5, 2014, at 2
p.m., at ST. JOHN CATHOLIC CHURCH,
1170 Rome Road, Rubicon, with Father David
LaPlante officiating. The family greeted rela-
tives and friends on Tuesday at the church form
12 p.m. until 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to
the American Heart Association are appreciat-
ed.

The Germantown School District is review-
ing a July 9 incident at the Jefferson County
Fair that involved a district employee.
The employee, April Kay Smith, received a
disorderly conduct citation from the Jefferson
County Sheriff's Department after it was deter-
mined that she destroyed campaign signs for
Gov. Scott Walker.
According to the Sheriff's Department
report, a witness observed Smith destroying
the signs and contacted the Sheriff's
Department. The witness wrote a report in
which she stated she observed Smith pull the
signs out of the ground and step all over them.
At first, Smith denied damaging the signs
and said she was Germantown kindergarten
teacher. She subsequently admitted to her role
in the incident, which caused an estimated
$40 in damage.
Germantown School District Administrator
Jeffrey Holmes confirmed this week that the
district is conducting an internal review of the
incident and that the School Board will discuss
the matter in closed session at its next meeting.
Holmes added that while the board will dis-
cuss the matter, no decisions will result from
that session.
The incident gained publicity last week
after The Wisconsin Reporter website printed
the sheriff's incident report and identified
Smith's role in the incident. The Wisconsin
Reporter is an outlet of the Franklin Center for
Government and Public Integrity organization.

teacher at Jefferson County Fair

Froedtert & the Medical College of
Wisconsin Community Memorial Hospital cel-
ebrated 50 years of service in the area with a
community festival held July 13. The festival
included food and beverages; a performance
by Accompany of Kids, as well as demonstra-
tions by hospital staff, activities for children,
displays by the village police and fire depart-
ments; and a food drive.
The event was held to commemorate not
only a widely respected and ever-expanding
medical establishment, but also a vision that
began with a handful of everyday citizens and
flourished into a crown jewel of Waukesha
County.
When, in 1957, community members
began going door to door to raise funds for a
need they saw a local hospital few could
have predicted that the facility that opened
July 1, 1964 would grow from 61 beds, 16
physicians and a staff of 70 to 202 beds, a
medical staff of nearly 600 and more than
1,300 total staff.
From humble beginnings, CMH has since
accumulated a long list of achievements in the
past five decades, including welcoming more
than 42,000 babies into the world.
Accredited by The Joint Commission, the full-
service hospital specializes in cancer care,
heart and vascular care, orthopaedics,
womens health and advanced surgical proce-
dures.
"Community Memorial Hospital was built
because of a sincere and compassionate con-
cern that local residents live healthy lives
along with a commitment to provide excellent
health care right here in their community," said
CMH president Dennis Pollard in reflection of
the hospitals history.

Hospital Board of Trustees is formed.
1964Hospital opens.
1970First major building project
results in an increase to 133 beds. The second
floor added; new OB Department/Pediatric
Unit/Surgical Unit; ICU Unit established;

Pollard said he looks forward to another
50 years of CMH as a pillar of health care in
the village and surrounding area.
I am honored to have been entrusted with
leading our hospital into the next half centu-
ry, he said. I grew up in Menomonee Falls
and know firsthand the impact Community
Memorial Hospital has had on health care in
this community.

A long-time resident of Germantown was
selected to fill a vacant seat on the Village
Board Aug. 4.
Rick Miller was selected from three resi-
dents who applied to fill the District 2 trustee
seat. The position opened when Jeff
Werderman resigned due to a move to Florida.
Miller has been a resident of the village for
50 years. Miller is a vice president of a medium
sized company in Milwaukee.
Miller said he decided to apply for a seat
on the board due to timing, as his children are
now in college and he was appointed to the
Board of Zoning Appeals and the Economic
Development Commission in April.
