I
wonder if youve ever had a sense of seeing
history being made - or even of being part of it?
I can remember as a student watching the BBC
news reports of the Berlin Wall coming down, and
realising just how important a moment that was.
This year seems to have the potential for a whole
history book in itself. The the tragedy of missing flight
MH17; the excitement of the Glasgow Commonwealth
Games; the complexity and injustice of the conflicts in
Israel and Gaza; the horror of the persecution of Christians in Iraq; the
referendum on the future of Scotland. All these are significant events that
we will look back on in years to come.
As diverse as those moments are, theres one thing that they all have in
common - indeed, that almost every significant event has in common.
People. Im struggling to think of a single event that we call history
which isnt fundamentally about people. MH17 wasnt about aircraft
technology; Glasgow 2014 wasnt about the stadiums or the transport
infrastructure; even the Referendum isnt really about currency or tax or
oil - its about people. People matter, in a way that nothing else does -
hence Glasgows motto through the Games: People make Glasgow.
That may appear to be an obvious statement - so let me compound it by
making another one: People matter to God. And yet theres been a
recurring tendency through the history of the Christian Church to lose
sight of the fact that we only exist because of that fact. People matter to
God to such an extraordinary degree that he became one of us, lived
among us, revealed himself to us as a person. And died as one of us.
I dont think historians will be talking about the Big Sunday Festival in
years to come in quite the same way as the Commonwealth Games, or
indeed almost anything else that you might see on the news this year. But
this is our chance to share Gods love for people. People are going to be
affected by this. It might be a whole community, or it might be a single
person - but this is going to be history-changing for
someone.

From the Editor
This summer has seen some fantastic hot, bright, sunny days, from way
back in June up to early August and even now it's not too bad (I really
enjoy a good thunderstorm!) We've been able to rely on good weather for
our Church barbecues and our Sunday School Picnic at the beach. The
Commonwealth Countries witnessed Scotland at its best and the Games
kicked off in glorious sunshine. Let's hope our Big Sunday Festival can be
enjoyed in such good weather also. (You will find details for the Big Sun-
day Festival inside the magazine. There are still things you can do to help,
so please see Ian if you would like to offer your services.)
Much of the recent news coverage has been of the XX Commonwealth
Games hosted by Scotland in Glasgow. However, there has also been ex-
tensive news coverage of areas of conflict, in particular Gaza and the
short-lived ceasefire between Gaza and Israel. It is not uncommon to feel
a bit lost in the issues surrounding the various conflicts: who is fighting
who, what are they fighting for, who are they fighting for, is it a simple
aggressor vs oppressed, etc. Dont let this put you off trying to understand
and get your head round the different relationships. A recent issue of
Mission Catalyst from BMS is a special, featuring articles on the Gaza
Israeli conflict, and is well worth a read as a balanced overview. You can
read it online or download it at http://alturl.com/zyse8.
Maybe we should take inspiration from the great job done by the
Clydesiders in Glasgow for the XX Commonwealth Games and do this on
a larger scale, taking as much interest and investing as much care on the
global population, sharing aid, love and, importantly, the Good News.

Peace and justice
Please pray for people grieving and living in fear as a result of
conflict.
Pray for those being targeted because of their faith 'label'.
Lift up those who are without homes, who have been injured,
orphaned, widowed and left struggling to survive.
Pray that humanitarian supplies and assistance will get through to
everyone in need; pray for the staff of agencies serving in Jesus'
name.
Pray for renewed efforts to bring peace in the Israeli / Palestinian
hostilities, as well as in other countries affected by conflict, such as
the Central African Republic, Iraq, South Sudan and Syria.
The Peebles 'Big Sunday Festival'
that the weather will be fine, and all practical arrangements will fall
neatly and safely into place;
that it will be a really happy day for the whole community;
that people who'd previously thought they had no room for God in
their lives, might start wonder about the One who gives life in all its
fullness
For the PBC church family, especially:
for those dealing with long-term health problems and disability, and
those for whom life has recently been interrupted by accident or
unforeseen health crisis
for blessing and protection of all the families associated the church
for our teachers, children and young people preparing to return to
school
for Mrs Ingrid Gray, Ian and the rest of the Gray family, as they adjust
to their recent bereavement
for the new small groups, and for upcoming church events (like the
Picnic and the Harvest celebrations) that fellowship would be deep-
ened and our commitment to following Jesus strengthened.
"A prayer in which we are not open to being part of the solution
will never be answered."

Sunday School
Picnic
Earlier in July KAOS travelled in a
minibus to Musselburgh beach for a
play and picnic. For those travelling
by car and arriving separate to the minibus group, the picnic spot was
identifiable by the minibus covered in balloons and a 15 ft Peebles Baptist
Church flagunmissable, unless you are Hazels daughter who made sure
that she was at the other side of the harbour! She did, however, find us
before the end and in time for her children and friends to join in with the
paddling, sand castle building, ball games and picnicking.
Thanks to Margaret Cowan, the children all enjoyed some home-made
cupcakes (and so did some of the adults). Bill and Jennie, who we are
very grateful to for organising the trip, disappeared for a short while
before returning with ice cream and cones for everyone.
After an afternoon of smiles, chatting, and fun, everything was packed up
and we embarked on the journey home.
However, because we all had such a
great time, we are going to do it again
this time for the whole church! Every-
one is invited to our church gathering
on Saturday 13 September. More details
will be provided at church and on the
church website.

Congratulations, Jim!
Outstanding was the headingin unmissable,
outsized bold printabove an article in this
weeks Peeblesshire News about oor freend Jim
Munro. And everyone who knows this unassum-
ing man would heartily endorse the headline!
Jim has just been awarded the Paul Harris Fellowshipthe Rotary Clubs
highest honour for exceptional service to Rotary and to the local com-
munity. Much of his life has been spent working tirelessly in the back-
ground, but hes no stranger to award ceremonies, having been honoured
as Tweeddale Citizen of the Year in 2003. He also had an award con-
ferred by the Scottish National Council for Voluntary Service.
When his post as Director of Finance ended in 1996 (Tweeddale being
swallowed up at the reorganisation that produced Scottish Borders
Council) father-of-three Jim didnt rest on his laurels, but enrolled as a
mature student, travelling every day to study psychology at Stirling Uni-
versity. At weekends and during university vacations, and following grad-
uation, he worked with young people with autism. Thereafter, he took up
a key role with the charity Afasic Scotland, which supports parents of
children and young people with speech, language and communication
needs.
Over the years (in his spare time!) Jims very special blend of people
skills and administrative and financial know-how were put to the service
of numerous local good causes, including Tweed Wheels, Home Basics,
the Innerleithen Thrift Shop, Kingsmeadows Catering, Peebles Silver
Band, the Golf Club, the Eastgate Theatreand of course, Peebles Baptist
Church.
Behind this great man theres a great woman, of course, and its not only
Jim whose abilities, commitment and sheer hard work have been excep-
tional. Carolyn was an honoured guest at the Rotary award ceremony,
and while Jim has a medal to show for it, Carolyn can enjoy watching
folks reactions when she tells them her photo has been printed on page
three!
Getting to Know You
My name is Lorna Doran and I was born Edinburgh in 1966, so Ill let you
all do the maths on that one! I grew up in Dalkeith and as a child went
along to the Sunday school ran by Dalkeith Baptist Church in Woodburn
Primary School, which was where I became a Christian at age 11 while on
Sunday School camp. I have been known to begin a testimony with,
Jonny Cash changed my life as it was during this camp that every-
thing about being a Christian crystallised, while watching the movie
Gospel Road. I knew at this point that Christ loved me and I also
needed to do something and choose Him too. I became a very active
young person in the church and in other activities such as Christian
Endeavour, Guides, Crusaders, Scripture Union and Youth Fellowship. I
was keen to stay out of the house as much as possible and even managed
to get some school work done and gain enough qualifications to get into
Moray House to do a B.Ed. in Primary Education.
At College I was in the Christian Union where I had hoped to meet the
perfect chap not going to happen in a female dominated college!! It was
not until I had finished College that I met and fell for Ralph and his fab
Northern Irish accent while we were both leaders at Crusader groups in
Edinburgh. We were married in 1991 and left for Germany where Ralph
had taken up a new post as Ferranti company rep for the RAF, working
with the amazingly brave pilots on the Harrier jump jets.
We were both involved in Christian activities and in the RAF community
leading worship, and for a short time running a micro youth group in our
wee flat. We made many friends and over the 9 years we were there saw
many being posted in, and out, and back again! This was always difficult
for me to say so many goodbyes to these short but intense relationships
where everyone depended so much on each other while family were so far
away. We realised this immensely when Caitlin was born 12 weeks early,
where both Caitlin and I could have died had it not been for the incredible
medical intervention of the German hospital teams. Ralph was supported
practically by many in the church who fed him, hugged him, and prayed
for us all. I didnt need to cook or drive for weeks as people from the
church and the RAF community rallied round and held us during this
terrible time. Caitlin was in hospital for 15 weeks before she could come
home and we could begin to be a family.
Not to be put off, we welcomed Meghan in to our family in 1997 and two
years later we were planning our return to Edinburgh and expecting a
new arrival which would be Orla in September 1999! We found our
perfect house in West Linton although the dcor was like an explosion
in a Laura Ashley shop: uber floral everywhere, even the loo!! We needed
room to expand as our family grew even bigger and Caleb came into the
world in 2002, we were now complete!
We have had varied experience of churches around Edinburgh where we
have been active, used and fed, and it was during this time that I felt God
leading me into training as a counsellor, which I did and graduated with a
Masters degree in 2012. I had begun this interest when working with a
pastor in Germany and had felt the need for this training in various house
groups and ladies fellowships where friends would share their hearts and
I felt the need to be able to help further than prayer: my worst fear being
of delivering platitudes or empty words to people trusting me with their
distress.
As the years went on Ralph and I felt the need to connect more with our
own community and in the Borders. We have done DIY church for short
periods of time at home, us and the kids, but knew the benefit of support
and giving within a church community like we had in Germany. We feel
that coming to Peebles Baptist Church has this sense of togetherness and
community which we have not felt for a while and we feel very at home
among you. I feel personally that I have come home to my Baptist roots
and have been amazed at the welcome we have all experienced, and with
the opportunities to serve in helping out with the Alpha course. What
attracted Ralph and Caleb first of all was the good sound teaching,
friendly chat and the wonderful church lunches with cakes. So, to
misquote Kevin Costner in Field of Dreams,
If you feed us, we will come!
The apostle Paul doesnt say, Have faith in faith. He says, Fight the good
fight of faith. Hes referring to the kind of faith that counters the fiery ar-
rows of the evil one. It protects you, defends you against fierce hostility.
Flaming arrows were a feature of ancient warfare. The soldiers used to
plunge them into fire and then send them into the enemy camp. Appar-
ently Roman shields were over a metre long and about half a metre wide.
They were made of wood and covered with leather. Before a conflict, the
soldiers would soak them in water so that when the flaming arrows hit
them, the shields wouldnt burst into flame but extinguish the fire. So
Paul says, Take the shield of faith which is able to extinguish the fiery ar-
rows of the evil one.
Untimely arrows
Unexpected fiery arrows are terrifying. They come at unforeseen times
and they hurt, wound, shock and bewilder. Maybe youre a busy pastor or
Christian worker and suddenly youre thinking, I cant keep going like
this. I cant live up to other peoples expectations. I havent got the re-
sources. Im not going to make it. Satan sees where youre vulnerable and
his fiery dart hits home, fills you with fear and horror and scares the life
out of you.
God provides a shield that can extinguish fiery arrows, but you need to
soak it in Gods Word and use it. Faith in the Word extinguishes
In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish
all the flaming arrows of the evil one. (Ephesians 6: 16)
Part 10:
The Shield of Faith
scary fiery arrows. So dont think, Whats going to happen to us? How are
we going to cope? Wheres the money coming from? How are we going to
afford to live? You must take up the shield and stand.
'Don't be anxious'
Paul told his next generation servant, Timothy, Now be strong. Fight the
good fight of faith. Hes exhorting Timothy, Get that shield up! Let the
scriptures dominate your understanding. Dont be anxious. We know the
commands, Dont steal, dont lie, dont commit adultery. We need to add
this one to them, Dont be anxious.
Let this command get to you. Maybe youre thinking, OK, Lord, I wont
be anxious but what do I do? Heres the answer: By prayer and supplica-
tion, make your requests known to God with thanksgiving and the peace
of God will guard your heart and mind. Tell him, Lord, thank you that
you can cope with all this. I believe your promises. Thank you that you
said youd never fail me. Over the years Ive seen the downfall of many
people. Those watching them have looked at them and thought, Theyll
do great things for God and then suddenly, theyre taken out. What hap-
pened there? we wonder. The answer is this: they yielded to the enemy
instead of holding onto faith. Dont let the arrows end your ministry.
'Don't walk in to the door'
We live in an automatic society. Youre in a supermarket, pushing your
trolley towards the doors and they open as you approach them. The same
is true of doors in airports. The Christian life isnt like that. Dr Martyn
Lloyd-Jones says, Faith is an activity, its something that has to be exer-
cised. It doesnt come into operation itself. You have to put it into opera-
tion. Its a form of activity. Life for believers isnt all automatic. If you
dont exercise faith youll find that the door doesnt open by itself, youll
walk into it. You must fight the fight of faith.
When Jesus was on the stormy lake he asked his disciples, Wheres your
faith? He says the same to us today. Whats our response? Maybe, Well, I
thought I had faith. Thats not the answer. Jesus is asking, Who has faith
now? Whos trusting God and whos giving up?
Grow in faith
One of my favourite New Testament verses is found in Romans 4
Abraham grew strong in faith. You can grow in faith. You might say, I
have such a little faith. Well, you can grow in it. Abraham grew strong in
faith being fully persuaded that what God had promised he was also able
to perform. God had made him a promise and Abraham allowed that to
persuade him. God had promised him an heir. When Abraham was an old
man God didnt say to him, How old are you, Abraham? Oh, 99, and Sa-
rah is barren. Forget it. I didnt realise that things were that bad. God
was totally aware of Abrahams situation, his frailty and inability and his
wifes barrenness. But Abraham didnt dwell on these things. He was per-
suaded that God would keep his promise. Thats how faith grows.
Satan is ruthless. Hell fire one arrow after another: Youre hopeless.
Youre useless. Plant a church? Who are you kidding? Never! Youre just a
waste of time. His arrows will hit you hard. Youre in a battle and youve
got to respond, God promised, God knows. Satan wont destroy me. Ive
got my shield up. Ill extinguish the fiery arrows.

Mission Catalyst: Israel-Palestine
Theology, history, politics and activism are all covered in the Israel-
Palestine issue of Mission Catalyst.
Israel-Palestine: it's the issue that won't go away. The issue that has been
at the heart of too many geopolitical struggles and humanitarian crises.
We're encouraged to believe that this is a religious conflict as old as time
and so complex that there is no way to resolve it. But is that true?
In this issue of Mission Catalyst, you can read a brief history of zionism,
an interview with the head of Rabbis for Human Rights, a piece from one
of the leading voices in American Christian zionism, an Israeli historian's
perspective and many more fascinating articles.
It's a good place to start if you're confused about what's going on in Israel-
Palestine, and what's been going on for years.
Cathie Aberdour
Hi all,
Judy arrived in Brazil last night. She plans to
leave by boat for Monkey River on Tuesday. It'll
be a two day journey along the Purus River. The
Apurina don't know she's coming so she'll just
have to get off the boat at a Brazilian's house
somewhere near the mouth of the river that leads
up to the village and get them to take her up to
the village. She'll be travelling on her own so I would value prayer for her
that she'll be kept safe. She's hoping to spend a week in the village. Pray
that this may be a good visit and that she won't find a lot of problems or
sickness in the village which will be very frustrating for her with her only
being a short time there. On her return to Manaus she will be working on
the transfer of our house there to Brad and Melissa and family. They have
been making regular visits to the Apurina and help them when they have
to come to the city for medical reasons.
Over the summer I've had family staying with me - my sister Margaret
who lives in Holland spent two weeks with me and we were blessed by
attending the Faith Mission Convention. Also my brother and sister-in-
law from Australia stayed with me for over two months and during that
time I spent a month with Judy in the States. One highlight of my time
there was to visit the Creation Museum in Kentucky - quite a fantastic
place.
Thanks for your prayers,
In Him,
Cathie

Cathie also contacted Fergus and Vi a few days later. . .

Dear Fergus and Vi
Thanks for your e-mail. I skyped Brad in Manaus and he told me that he
helped Judy to get her supplies and he drove her to the boat. She left on
Tuesday and should have arrived in the village some time on Thursday.
Brad is aiming to spend a few weeks in the village after Judy returns next
week and after there's the transfer of our house to Brad and Melissa.
Sarah McArthur

I always find it amazing that you can be swimming along
quite the thing, all well and thinking isnt life so amazing
and suddenly hit a brick wall. Your first reaction being,
where on earth did that come from? Your second, I cant
do this.

This week has been one of those weeks. All was good, settling in just fine
and finding my bearings and then bam the little voice in my head says
what on earth are you doing here? You do realise this is now home for
the next 2 years. All these thoughts came rushing into my head one night
as I tried to get to sleep.

I had an exhausting sleep between worry and prayer. Asking why I was
actually here. The answer came in the morning in the form of an email
from a friend with the verse:

And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, How
beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news! ( Romans
10 : 15 ESV)

A peace just flooded over me as I lay beneath my mozzie net not wanting
to face the day ahead. But as I read this verse over and over and it then
lead me to,
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will
strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous
right hand. ( Isaiah 41 : 10 ESV)

I remembered why I was here, why God had sent me and that no matter
what happens God is in control. I dont need to know everything because I
know the one who does.

Sarah also sends a big thank you for your prayers. Her move went well,
and her address is:

Sarah McArthur, in Peru;
Andy & Jutta Cowie, based in Haiti;
Ann & David MacFarlane, in Italy.

Rachel and Tim Eagle and their family, who were based
in Mozambique, have returned home early. Please pray
for them as they seek Gods will for their future.

If you would like to support any of our link workers by
prayer and committed regular giving, visit
bmsworldmission.org/partners, or call 01235 517617 for a
24:7 Partners leaflet.

This is becoming a more regular occurrence. Pictures taken from our
apartment on different days:

Police fired volleys of tear gas to break up a large march by demonstrators
calling for President Martelly to step down. It was estimated that 5,000
protesters, some burning tyres and blocking streets in the congested capi-
tal.
The government has announced legislative elections to choose 112 depu-
ties and 20 senators would be held on the 16th of October 2014, two years
late.
Please pray for the political situation in Haiti. Please also pray for us and
all the other missionaries in Haiti. Protection is so vital.
Pray for the Heinens family, who grieve for the loss of
Gerrit. Here are some more details, if you want to get
more information (written by Rebecca Barlow)
