Section 11

Painting

1. Materials Generally

All materials required for the works shall be delivered to the site of the works, ready-mixed in
the maker's containers with the seals. Etc. unbroken and shall be clearly marked with the maker's
name or trademark and a description of the contents and colour. All materials shall be stored on
the site of the works.

The whole of the paints, distempers, varnishes, cement paints etc. used in the works must be
suitable for use in tropical climates and should be selected form the products of the
manufacturer's on the SISIR's approved cists. The Contractor may ascertain from the Architect
the name of such approved manufacturers. The names of other brands may be submitted but
preference will be given to locally manufactured paints. Such paints will be subject to approval
before use is permitted.

All materials for multiple coat work, e.g. priming undercoat and finishing coat shall be obtained
from the same manufacturer and shall be those recommended by the manufacturer as suitable for
using together and for the surface concerned.

All paints, unless otherwise described, shall comply with the latest edition of the following B.S.
wherever applicable.

B.S. 2521 24 Ready-mixed oil-based priming paints.

B.S. 2525 32 Ready-mixed oil-based undercoating and finishing paints
(Exterior quality)

B.S. 227 & 278 Ready-mixed paints (oil gloss) zinc oxide base.

B. S. 1053 Water paints and distempers for interior use.

2. Samples

Manufacturer's samples of all paints, varnishes, distempers, etc. shall be submitted free of cost,
in sealed containers to the Architect for his approval before bulk deliveries are made and before
any paintwork or distempering is started.


During the execution of the work, further samples of all or any of the materials shall be taken by
the Architect as he desires and the Contractor shall provide the containers with necessary seals
and all samples at his own expense. The samples shall be taken from the sealed or open
containers or from the workmen's kettles on the works as may be directed by the Architect.

Any work executed with material found on test not to fulfill the requirements of the Specification
shall be burnt off or otherwise removed and the work redone as directed by the Architect at the
Contractor's expense.

3. Mordant Solution

Mordant solution shall be composed of 64 parts of soft water, I part of copper chloride, I part of
copper nitrate, I part of ammonium chloride and I part of hydrochloric acid by weight.

4. Knotting

All holes in woodwork shall be treated to prevent bleeding. Large or loose knots shall be cut out
and replaced with sound wood or cut back and the surface made good with stopper. Smaller knots shall
be treated with thin coats of knotting. The knotting used shall be applied to cover all knots in painted
timber or to such surfaces as may be directed by the Architect.

5. Stopping

All cracks, holes and other imperfections in woodwork shall be scraped out, primed and make
good with hard stopping, faced up and rubbed down to an even surface. The hard stopping shall
be of approved make up on the job according to approve practice.

Hard stopping for external woodwork shall be hard Japan stopping and hard stopping for
Internal woodwork shall consists of a mixture of 9 parts of putty to I part of stiff white lead.

6. Varnish

Varnish shall comply generally with B.S. 266.The materials shall be clear and transparent and
when applied shall, on drying, give a glossy coating free from runs and specks.

Varnished work found 'Tacky' two or three days after application shall be washed off with
turpentine and revarnished at the Contractor's own expense.




7. Wood Preservative

Wood preservative for brush, dipping or hot and cold open tank treatment shall comply generally
with the requirement of B S. 144.

8. Linseed Oil

Linseed oil shall be refined linseed oil, raw or boiled and shall comply generally with the
requirement of B.S. 242,243 and 259

9. Workmanship Generally

All brushes, tools, pots, kettles, etc. used in carrying out the work-shall be clean and free from
foreign matter and shall be thoroughly cleaned out before being used with a different type of
class of materials.

All metal fittings, fastenings and ironmongery shall be removed before the preparatory
processes commence and are to be cleaned and refixed in position on completion.

An ample supply of clean dust sheets to protect the work during its progress shall be at hand and
all floors shall be covered and when executing any paintwork.

Before painting, varnishing, polishing, etc. are proceeded with floors must be washed over and
every possible precaution taken to keep down dust.

Paints of different type shall not be permitted to be mixed together.

Undercoating shall be tinted in different shades so as to be readily distinguishable and where
directed, the Contractor shall provide panels of paintwork, etc showing the respective tints of
each coat selected for the work.

All internal paintwork shall have a gloss finish unless otherwise described and all external
paintwork shall be of special quality suited for external use.

All surfaces shall be clean, dry and free from oil or greases. Paint shall not be applied to any
surfaces upon which there is moisture nor any external surfaces during wet weather.

All materials shall be thoroughly stirred and mixed when the containers, etc are opened and
when the contents are transferred to the painter's kettles. Where necessary, the paints shall be
strained to remove all skin, etc. before application. Under no circumstances will the addition of
any thinners or driers, of any kind be permitted.

Each coat of oil paint shall be lightly rubbed down with fine glass paper before the next coat is
applied.

Under no circumstances shall any successive coat of paint be applied until the Architect's
permission has been obtained.

The undercoat shall be 'flat' in all cases.

10. Preparatory Work

Plastering surfaces shall be given a coat of zinc sulphate to I gallon of water before distempering
or painting with oil bound water paint.

Surfaces of new woodwork which are to be painted, shall be knotted, primed and stopped to the
approval of the Architect before applying the undercoat.

All iron or steel surfaces shall be thoroughly scraped and rubbed down with wire brushers and
shall be entirely free from rust, mill, scales, etc before applying the priming coat.

Where plaster board or fibre board surfaces are to be decorated direct and the joints are covered
with paper or cotton cover strip, the cover strips shall be given a coat of sharp primer before the
general surface are decorated.

New asbestos cement and new cement rendered surfaces required to be painted with oil paint
shall be given one or two coats as necessary of approved alkali resistant primer before under
coating.

Hardboard surfaces where the board contains an oil component shall be primed with special
hardboard primer and where necessary, given one coat special hardboard filler, prior to
undercoating. Primer and filler to be as recommended by manufacturers of the particular
hardboard for the decoration required.

12. Backs of Frames etc

Except for 'Pressure Impregnated' timbers, all backs of timber frames, etc. shall be treated with
one coat of approved primer before fixing.

13. Painting Woodwork
In addition to the priming coat, exposed surfaces of external and internal works shall have one
undercoat and two finished coats.

14. Painting Steel and lronwork

Except where already painted at manufacturer's works and unless otherwise described, all iron
and steelwork shall be primed before fixing with one coat of selected primer or paint conforming
to B.S. 2521-4.

In addition to the above paragraph and unless described to the contrary, all iron and steelwork
surface (including eave gutters, rainwater, soil, waste and ventilating pipes) shall receive one
undercoat and two finishing coats after fixing Coated pipes shall be knotted prior to painting.
Eave gutters and rainwater heads shall be painted inside and out.

Galvanized iron surfaces described to be painted shall receive one coat of mordant solution prior
to painting.

15. Painting Exposed Pipes, etc.

Unless otherwise described, prepare and apply one undercoat and two finishing coats on all
exposed surfaces of internal cold water pipes, cisterns, wastes, overflows, flush pipes, water
waste preventors, etc finished similar in colour to the background to which they are fixed.

16. Cement and Sand Plasters

All defective plasters shall be cut out and made good with plaster of the same type as previously
used. Slight cracks shall be made good with hard stopping. Large cracks shall be cut with the
edges undercut and filled with an approved ready-mixed light weight gypsum plaster, the edges
being closely knit and the filling level with the surrounding surfaces.

17. Gloss Finish

All internal paintwork shall have a gloss finish unless otherwise described and all external
paintwork shall be of special quality suited for external use.

18. Internal Plastered Surfaces, etc

Rub down all plaster work and apply one coat alkali resisting primer and two coats of emulsion
paint.




19. External Plastered Surface etc

Rub down all plaster work and apply one coat alkali resisting primer and two coats 'ICI'
emulsion paint all in accordance with the manufacturer's instruction and as directed on the site.

20. Internal Floor Screed

Any dirt, foreign particles, oil, grease and paints stains shall be removed by appropriate means.
The entire floor surfaces will then be degreased by means of grease chemical remover. After
degreasing acid etched the entire surfaces so as to form "keys" to receive the new epoxy floor
coating. Wash/clean the entire etched floor surfaces by means of high pressure water jet
equipment. Repair and patch-up any minor hairline cracks or minor pot-holes by means of high
early strength. Epoxy Mortar GP. Final application shall be 2 coats of "Sealocrete's Sealocote"
water-based epoxy floor coating system (Agent: M/s Amview Building General Contractor). Or
approved equivalent, over the cleaned floor surfaces.

21. Woodwork

All woodwork internally and externally to be knotted, stopped, primed and painted with one
undercoat and two finishing coats synthetic enamel paint and all external paintwork shall be of
special quality suited for external use.

22. Completion

On completion, wash off paint and distemper stains on floors, walls etc clean glass on both sides,
replace any broken or cracked squares or louvres, clean away all rubbish and superfluous
materials and leave the whole of the premises fit and ready for immediate occupation.
