S I TE S I N
Korea
In Commemoration of Pope Francis' Visit to Korea
Jeondong Catholic Church
Catholicism in Korea began with a group of Joseon Dynasty
(13921910) scholars academic interest in Catholic books
like Cheonjusirui (De Deo Verax Disputatio) published in
China, in the early 17th century, late Joseon. In 1784, Peter
Yi Seung-hun became the first Korean to be baptized. After
his baptism in Beijing, Yi returned to Joseon and founded a
Christian community. With this historical event, the Catholic
Church in Korea was established. This is when Catholicism
had its beginning as religion in Joseon.
The growth of the Catholic Church in Korea was not easy
at the time, as Confucianism was highly dominant. The
places introduced in this booklet are proof of how much
the faithful and the Catholic Church suffered and were
ruthlessly persecuted for more than 100 years until the late
19th century, when freedom of religion was finally granted.
Despite persecution, Christians continued to unite and form
communities across the country, persistently spreading
Catholicism in Korea. Today, there are about 5.44 million
Catholics in Korea.
Due to His Holiness Pope Francis honorable visit to Korea,
this booklet introduces major Catholic sites in Korea and
nearby attractions along with the Popes itinerary.

Hwaseong Fortress and Namhansanseong
Fortress, located in Gyeonggi-do Province,
have been recognized by UNESCO for their
historical signicance, and thus listed as
UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites.
The development in fortress construction
techniques is well embodied in the two
fortresses. They were planned and built
to serve as provincial capitals of the
Joseon Dynasty (13921910) in case of an
emergency. Both sites are also martyrdom
si t es where many Chri st i ans were
martyred during the persecutions.
Hwaseong Fort ress i n Suwon i s a
martyrdom site where 78 Christians
were martyred during the 1866 Byeongin
Persecution. The execution was carried
out at Paldalmun (the southern gate) and Janganmun (the northern gate), near
todays Buksudong Catholic Church.
Namhansanseong Fortress is also a martyrdom site where about 300 Christians
were tortured to death during the Sinyu, Gihae, and Byeongin Persecutions.
Corpses of the martyrs were dumped at Sigumun Gate of Namhansanseong
Fortress. Sigumun literally means corpse gate.
