Greetings!

I am writing to urge you to become an advocate for colon
cancer awareness and join me at the Scope it Out 5K
Run/Walk. My sister, Karen Pasqualetto, passed away from
this terrible disease in 2008 and her death could have been
avoided with a simple colonoscopy.

According to the American Cancer Society (ACS) colorectal
cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both
men and women in the United States. ACS estimates that
about 148,810 new cases of colorectal cancer (77,250 in
men and 71,560 in women) will be diagnosed in 2008. But
colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable forms of
cancer.

"As many as 80% of the 150,000 annual cases of
colon cancer could be prevented if only the
colonoscopy were as commonly utilized as the
mammogram and Pap smear," according to Dr. John
Marshall, director of developmental therapeutics and
GI oncology at Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer
Center.

The most common symptom of colorectal cancer is no
symptom at all. That is why advance screenings are so
important. With a combination of increased education and
investments in research and screening techniques, we will
someday retreat this disease to nothing more than a
footnote in medical school textbooks. But we need your
help.

The Scope it Out 5K Run/Walk for Colon Cancer
Awareness is a entering its fifth year in WashingtonD.C.
Since its inception in 2005, more than 7,400 people have
participated, raising nearly $300,000 for colon cancer
research and advocacy campaigns. The race is hosted by
the all-volunteer Colon Cancer Awareness Foundation
(CCAF) and 2009 race proceeds will be donated to
LombardiComprehensiveCancerCenter and CCAF.

March is colorectal cancer awareness month and this
is the perfect opportunity to get involved!
