Student Orientation Programme in Zee Media Corp. Ltd.

Introduction: Zee Media Corp. Ltd. and Himgiri Zee University come under the
auspices of Essel Group. In their efforts to strengthen the quality education Himgiri Zee
University decided to send its students to Zee Media Corp. Ltd., Noida, for a two day
Orientation Programme to make the students aware as well as help them gain an insight
into the internal working environment of a Media Channel. With due consultations and
deliberations the dates for the programme were scheduled for 14

& 15
th
November,
2013.
Purpose: Himgiri Zee University runs Faculty of Expressive Cultures, Media & Mass
Communication. The University houses many media and media business oriented
courses. Therefore, the two-day programme orientation visit was scheduled with a
purpose of understanding the Media and its work culture,
The purposes can be summed up as:
1. Understanding of Media in its working and functioning domain.
2. Interaction with noted Media Personalities
3. Understanding of Media Production and Processing.
4. Seeking out avenues for Internships and jobs for students in the Media Industry.
Visiting Team: After various consultations and discussions between the concerned
authorities in Himgiri Zee University and Zee Media Corp. Ltd., it was decided that there
will be two visits with two separate teams to Noida in the Zee Media headquarters. The
first visit was scheduled for 14

& 15
th
November, 2013, while the second one is
scheduled for 28
th
& 29
th
November, 2013. The first team comprised of 13 persons
including one faculty member.








Day 1: 14
th
November, 2013
Schedule of the Orientation Programme:
1. Mr. Priyo Roop Guha (HR Dept.): Introduction to Essel Group, Zee Media
Corp. Ltd., Zee Entertainment and its other business ventures. Structure of the
news organization and the process of news flow.

2. Mr. Mukesh Singh (Senior Reporter): Mr. Mukesh Singh is a senior
broadcast media journalist. Working in Media Industry for past 25 years.
Currently he holds the Output Editor post in Zee News. In his session, there were
deliberations regarding the elements of news and output editing in Broadcast
Media.

3. Ms. Reema Sharma (HOD, Zee News Online): Ms. Reema Sharma is a vital
member in the web design team of Zee Media Corp. Ltd. In her session, the role of
Web Media and the growth of digital technology in Journalism were discussed.
Moreover, in her presentation, she distinguished the separate pages of Zee News
website with their scopes and importance.

4. Mr. Aseem Ghosh (Asst. Editor, Zee Business): Session with Mr. Aseem
Ghosh, Asst. Editor, Zee Business was fruitful in terms of Business Perspective
and news on Stock Market. Views of Mr. Ghosh on SME (Small & Medium
Enterprises) plus economic empowerment society as a whole raised questions
from students as well. The Competition between countrys two leading Hindi
business channels Zee Business and CNBC Aawaz and above all, Mr. Ghosh gave
his thoughts on the competition and helped the students understand the dynamics
of Media Market competition.

5. Mr. Vikash Kumar (Senior Manager-Operations): Mr. Vikash Kumar is a
Senior Manager in the operational part of Zee Media Corp. Ltd., which ranges
from Production to going on air. He is the senior member of the production team
in all the news channels of Zee Media Corp. Ltd. The next session with Mr.
Kumar was not about presentations or deliberations but was based more o the
technicalities of media and production. Under his supervision, the students visited
PCR (Production Control Room). Here, students came to know about the
technicalities of a virtual studio which we normally see in TV News channels. The
effects of CHROMA technology, uses and the importance of lighting,
programming and run-down systems of broadcast media were also discussed. In
this session, students witnessed Live Broadcasting from Zee Business and Zee
News Studios.

6. Mr. Sumit Awasthi (Senior Journalist & Anchor): Mr. Awasthi is a well
known face in the Indian Journalistic fraternity. Currently he holds the role of
Senior Editor in Zee Media. He shared his experience of 15 years with the
students. He emphasized upon the techniques and skills to be a good journalist.

7. Ms. Geetanjali Pandit (Chief Peoples Officer): The Chief Peoples Officer,
Ms. Geetanjali Pandits session was the last session of the day. In the session, the
views and experiences of the students were shared. Along with that, the scope and
avenues for future collaborations in terms of internships, on-job training, jobs and
the scope of various fields in media were discussed.

Day Two: 15

November, 2013
1. Mr. Shekhar Bansal (Marketing Team): Day two started with a session on
Marketing and Media Sales by Mr. Shekhar Bansal. He emphasized upon the rules
and parameters of News TV Marketing. How Concept of TAM and TRP helps in
creating ratings for News Channels, how various news channels garner revenue
through media sales and finally other possibilities through which one can establish
marketing dominance.

2. Mr. Kamal Kumar (Senior Camera Person): Mr. Kamal Kishore has 20
years of experience in news channels. He shared his views on various assignments
that he had covered in past years including his experiences of shooting live
encounters. He pointed out the importance of peace of mind and alertness while
filming.

3. Mr. Vishal Sharma (Editing Dept.): Mr. Vishal Sharma is on a senior
position in the Video Editing department. He started his session with Zee News
coverage of the Gaazi Baba encounter and how that subsequently led to the injury
of their camera person. In this session, the students visited the Video Editing
Room, VSAT Room, Voice Over Room and Assignment Room. Mr. Vishal
introduced the students to the video editing software called VELOCITY.

4. Mr. Deepak Kishore (Graphics Head): Mr. Kishore is a senior producer in
the Graphic Designing team. He spoke about the various discussions, deliberations
and the subsequent finalization of the theme and overall look of the news channel
which has recently been revamped. He also segregated graphic designing for News
Media and other fields related to social activities. Students were privileged to visit
the Graphic Designing room where they witnessed graphic designing on online
and live coverage basis and thematic basis.

5. Mr. Mohit Sharma (Sales Dept.): Mr. Mohit Sharma, an integral part of the
Media Sales department in Zee Media Corp. Ltd. focused on current Media
Market competition. The parameters of Media Sales which subsequently leads to
enhanced media sales and profits. He started his presentation with many brands
such as Horlicks and many others. He emphasized on his experience which he has
used in creating value for Zee News and its subsidiaries.

6. Mr. Hanumant Rao (Engineering Dept.): The session with Mr. Hanumant
Rao was about the maintenance and performance of gadgets used in News Media
business. He introduced students to current changes and developments occurring
in news media filming and recording. How various protocols are being used in
creating quality in news media feed.

7. Mr. Shailesh Ranjan (Associate Editor, Zee News (NCR): Mr. Shailesh
Ranjan, Associate Editor, Zee News (NCR) is a senior most journalist in the
organization. He pointed out his various experiences that he has witnessed in the
last 15 years. His reporting and persistence in the TAJ corridor scam and many
others were also discussed. Mr. Ranjan attributed his success as a journalist to be a
good human being. Before being a Journalist, it is necessary to be good by nature
and have a positive attitude.

8. Mr. Ashish Gupta (Production Head): Production Head Mr. Ashish Gupta,
talked about the process of Production from input to output. He distinguished
ONLINE production and OFFLINE production. He talked about the essentials of
producing good films emphasizing more on documentary films.


Visit Summary: Overall, the visit was a learning experience for the students of
the ECMC department, Himgiri Zee University. During the visit, HR Dept., Zee
Media Corp. Ltd. was hopeful of incorporating the students of Himgiri in the
News Media Organization. Ms. Geetanjali Pandit, Chief Peoples Officer, ensured
about the upcoming Internship programme for students.
The overall Functioning of a News Channel was understood through a more
holistic perspective by the students.
