Why Korrekt-Tul"* Uses the Materials It Does in its Grilling Baskets
By Dr. Ing. Dieter-Hans von
Kaltenberg-Voss Chief Engineer, Korrekt-Tul Korrekt-Tul methodically and carefully engineers and tests each of its products using modern and current engineering standards. Korrekt-Tur M uses only the best and most appropriate materials for longevity, for the purpose of the Korrekt-Tul product, for the environment in which the product will be used, for ease of cleaning, for corrosion resistance (including crack and crevice corrosion) and for strength and sturdiness and for safety for products coming into contact with food (See References below). All Korrekt-Tul products are recyclable at the ends of their life cycles. As in all engineering designs, there are trade-off decisions for the best product, however the Korrekt-Tul engineering design philosophy is to give the customer the very best quality product modern engineering can develop using state-of the art materials, designs, manufacturing, quality assurance and inspection and processes. You can trust K Korrekt-Tul as the very best product for the purpose - the 'Correct Tool for the Job \ Why does Korrekt-Tul use Type 201 Stainless Steel for its Grilling Baskets? All stainless steel types are specified as to their charcateristics chemically and physically by the American Society for the Testing of Materials or ASTM. The International Standards Organization (ISO) also has standards which are less often used that ASTM standards. ASTM Type 201, or simply "201" Stainless steel, bends easily and stretches well. It works best in use where it is not exposed to solvents and chemicals and therefore is an excellent stainless steel for the grilling basket application which requires exposure to food and stretching of wire. The choice of 201 stainless steel is based on these qualities and its use and experience in cooking products not requiring substantial thickness for even heat transfer. Because it is an easily worked steel, it is ideal for making the wires and tubes of the Korrekt-Tul m grilling basket and for joining these structural members together and its making produces few manufacturing defects. Stainless steels similar to 201 stainless steel are ASTM type 316 (BA402 through BA406) which is the same thickness as 201 stainless steel for the same characteristics. It is the most corrosion-resistant of either 304 or 201 types but it is much weaker than either and costs between 30 and 40% more than 201 stainless steel. In the Korrekt-Tur* Grilling Basket design, such excessive corrosion resistance is unnecessary in grilling for the excessive cost. Therefore it is not used. For the same characteristics as 201 stainless steel, 304 stainless steel is thinner than 201 stainless steel. It is usually employed where industrially corrosive elements are present and weight is a concern. These are qualities which have no engineering or product relevance to the Korrekt-Tul grilling basket. So-called food-grade 18/10 stainless steel (the ration of ferrous materials to chromium in the alloy) is the same as 304 stainless steel. The terms "food- grade" and "304" are often used as a selling point because of its slightly different characteristics when compared to 201 stainless steel. Those characteristics have little relevance to the corrosion and heat environments of cooking and are therefore in most cases not worth the additional price charged the customer for the mere use of 304 or 18/10 stainless steel. Korrekt-Tur avoids such practices in its designs in its efforts to provide its customers with the very best and 'Correct Tool for the Job \
