We have been very busy working hard to prepare for the 2014-2015 school year. We hope that you are

School Starts September 3rd
The student year begins on Wednesday, September 3rd at 8:10am. We have many students and family
members at school this day and it is extremely important to follow the first day procedures to ensure
for the safety and transition of all our students. On the first day of school, students will gather on the
playground and line up underneath the sign that has their teachers name on it. All available staff
members will be on the playground, with class lists, helping students find their line. On this day ON-
LY, parents are allowed to be on the playground to help their child get to the proper location. Parents
are not, however, allowed to walk with their student to class for safety reasons. Kindergarten students
will meet on the playground in front of the school.

First Day Folder
Welcome to the 2014-2015 school year! The start of each year is filled with excitement and energy
and lots of paperwork.
There will be a First Day Folder coming home that contains information that is critical to a great
start of the year for your student. Please be looking for it and read through all the documents en-
closed. Complete those that request information and then return the signed/completed forms to your
students teacher as soon as possible.
Some of the forms included in this packet are: students responsibilities & rights policies, HES student
handbook agreement, Family Access instructions, annual Health History form (blue card), volunteer
information, computer use agreement, release of information/photo permission, PTSA membership
forms, etc.

Assistant Principals Message
Welcome to the start of a new school year! It is my privilege and honor to serve as your assistant principal of Horizons Elemen-
tary. We are looking forward to hearing about your summer adventures, catching up with returning families, and meeting our
newest Eagles.

Student success is the goal of every staff member at Horizons. Our district-wide PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Support)
program emphasizes positive choices and reminds students to follow our RISE expectations: Respect, Individual Accountability,
Safety, and Empathy. Horizons PBIS Behavioral Matrix will be sent home with students on the first day of school. Please take
some time to review these positive behavior expectations with your student to help set a strong foundation for success.

Bus Riders: We want the ride to be safe and pleasant. Bus drivers and teachers will go over safety rules,
and wed like parents to follow these up at home. Students who deliberately violate safety rules will have
their bus privileges suspended.

Students should be extremely careful when crossing streets and at bus stops. Students must use cross-
walks at all times when crossing streets. Students should understand that bus stops become dangerous
when pushing and shoving occur.

Glass items, sharp or pointed objects, balloons and pets are not allowed on school buses for safety rea-
sons.

Grade will wear a bus tag with their name and address on it to help
them get home easily for the first two weeks of school.


Bicycle Riders: Bicycles may be ridden to school and they are subject to the same rules and regulations
as licensed vehicles. Upon entering the school grounds, students must dismount and walk the bike to the
bike rack. Bikes are off limits during the school day. All bikes should be locked to the bike rack. Any ac-
cessory items which can easily be removed should be left at home. The school is not responsible
if bicycles are lost, stolen or damaged.


Roller Blades, Scooters, and Skateboards: Upon entering school grounds, students must dismount and
carry or walk these items to the classroom. These items are off limits during the school day. The school
is not responsible if they are lost, stolen or damaged.


Walkers: Walkers should depart school grounds immediately upon dismissal, as this is the time when
crossing guards are on duty. Students should wait for the crossing guards to assist them in crossing the
street safely.

Do You Have Family Access Yet?
Family Access is a web-based
tool designed to enhance
parent/guardian, student and
school communication. Par-
ents and Students can use it to
check their academic progress
and attendance throughout the
year. Your use of the Family
Access website is voluntary
but encouraged!
Family Access is available for
all schools and is only for par-
ents/guardians that have legal
rights to view the students
progress and grades. Pass-
words are not issued to grand-
parents, aunts, uncles, cousins,
friends or neighbors unless
they are the legal guardian of
the student.
If you have not signed up to be
able to access your students
grades and information online
you can visit our website at
www.nthurston.k12.wa.us/
horizons and fill out the online
application. If you do not have
internet access, come to the
schools office to get help get-
ting set-up.
The application asks for infor-
mation that will need to be
consistent with school rec-
ords. Once your application
has been received it will be
reviewed. Once it has been
determined that the person
applying does indeed have a
legal right to access student
grades, a password will be
issued by email. Expected time
allowed for issuance of pass-
words is 5-10 working days,
unless there is a problem with
verifying the information.

PRINCIPALS COFFEE

The first Principals Coffee of the year will be on October 2 at 8:30
a.m.
We will meet at Horizons for coffee and discussion. We will talk
about the Horizons academic and behavioral expectations and any
other topics that interest you. We look forward to seeing you at
the Principals Coffee! Principals Coffee will be held on the first

What is Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of
Great Students)?
This is a program that engage men,
inspire children, reduce bullying and
enhance the educational environ-
ment at school.
Watch D.O.G.S. is the father in-
volvement initiative of the National
Center for Fathering that organizes
fathers and father figures in order to
provide positive male role models
for the students and to enhance
school security.

Today, more than 4049 active programs in
46 states participate in the Watch D.O.G.S.
Program and Horizons one of them.
Who are Watch D.O.G.S? Fathers, grandfa-
thers, step-fathers, uncles, and other father
figures who volunteer to serve at least one
day a year in a variety of school activities as
assigned by the school principal or other
administrator.
Please be watching for Pizza Night invita-
tions coming home later in September.
The Pizza Night Kick-off will be October
2nd at 6:00-7:00 pm in the gym.




VOLUNTEER
APPLICATION PROCESS

Volunteers play a critical role in making Horizons a great place for students and
families. If you would like to volunteer in your childs classroom this year, or if you an-
ticipate volunteering later in the year in the classroom, at Field Day, on a field trip, or
at any other school event, please complete the volunteer application well in
advance. This will ensure that your application has been processed and approved be-
fore the event for which you are volunteering. A new volunteer application must be
completed every two school years.

Only district-approved volunteers may volunteer for school events.

Volunteer applications are available online on the district website. Please contact the
office at 412-4710 if you have any questions.
