AVERAGE
The average is also called the
mean.
Sum of all items =
Average Number of items
If the averages of two different
groups are known, the average of
third group made by combining
these two groups can be found
out.
Where m, n are the number of
items in two groups and a, b are
their averages.
Note: The combined average
always lies in between the
individual averages. The above
formula can be applied for more
than two groups also.
If all the items in a group are
addition (or) subtracted (or)
multiplied (or) divided by a
constant then the new average
can be found by adding (or)
subtracting (or) multiplying (or)
dividing the original average by
the constant.
MODEL QUESTIONS
1. The average age of 40 students in
a class is 15 years. When 10 new
students are admitted, the
average is increased by 0.2 years.
What is the average of the new
students?
a) 16 years b) 16.5 years
c) 17 years d) 18 years
Sol: The sum of ages of 40 students
= 40 15 = 600 years
The average of 40 + 10 = 50
students = 15.2 years
The sum of ages of 50
students = 50 15.2 = 760 years
The sum of ages of 10 new
students = 760 600 = 160 years
Their average
=
Answer: (a)
2. The average age of Aand B is 20
years. If 'C' were to replace A, the
average would be 19 and if 'C'
were to replace B, the average
would be 21. What are the ages
of A, B and C?
a) 20, 18, 22 b) 22, 18, 20
c) 18, 20, 22 d) 22, 20, 18
Sol: Let a, b, c be the average ages of
A, B, C.
Given that
a = (a + b + c) (b + c)
= 60 38 = 22
Similarly b = 60 42 = 18
c = 60 40 = 20
a = 22, b = 18 and c = 20
Answer: (b)
3. The average of 60 numbers is
120. Each number is first
increased by 20, then divided by
4 and then subtracted by 20.
Then what is the new average?
a) 12 b) 16
c) 22 d) 15
Sol: We know that the arithmetic
operations operated on the items
can also be operated on the
average in same order.
New average =
Answer: (d)
4. If a, b, c, d and e are five
consecutive odd numbers, their
average is
a) 5(a + 4)
b)
c) 5(a + b + c + d + e)
d) a + 4
Sol: As they are consecutive odd
numbers we have b = a + 2, c = a
+ 4, d = a + 6 and e = a + 8
Their average =
Answer: (d)
5. Of the three numbers, the first is
four times the second and three
times the third. If the average of
all the three numbers is 95, then
the third number is:
a) 57 b) 76
c) 60 d) 45
Sol: Let the third number be 4x then
the first number = 3 4x = 12x
Average of three numbers =
Third number = 4 15 = 60
Answer: (c)
6. The average age of a family of
five persons is 20 years. If the
youngest member is 8 years old,
what was the average age of the
family at the birth time of the
youngest member?
a) 12 years b) 15 years
c) 18 years d) 16 years
Sol: The sum of ages of all 5 family
members at present =
5 20 = 100 years.
Excluding youngest member, the
average age of 4 members at
present
At the time of birth of youngest
i.e. 8 years ago, their average =
23 8 = 15 years
Answer: (b)
7. There are Indians and Europeans
in an army of 12000. The average
height of Europeans is 5'10". The
average height of Indians is 5'9",
and the average of entire army is
Find out the number of
Indians in the army.
a) 2500 b) 3000
c) 2800 d) 2200
Sol: This kind of problems can be
solved by a simple technique.
From the above diagram, the
average of the entire army is
stood at the point in
between Indians and Europeans.
Therefore, the number of
Europeans
Number of Indians =
= 12000 9000 = 3000
Answer: (b)
8. The average age of 24 boys in a
class is 16 years. If the teacher is
included and one boy is excluded
from the group, the average
increases by one. The age of the
teacher is:
a) 41 b) 32 c) 45
d) Data insufficient
Sol: After inclusion and exclusion,
the number of persons is same
but their average becomes 17
years. From this data we can at
the most say that the difference
between the ages of teacher and
student = 24 years
But the age of teacher alone
cannot be found so the given data
is not sufficient.
Answer: (d)
9. Abus travels at a certain average
speed for a distance of 200 km
and then travels a distance of 300
km at an average speed of 10 km
ph more than its original speed.
If it takes 11 hours to complete
the total journey, what is the orig-
inal speed of the bus in kmph?
a) 40 b) 35
c) 32 d) 48
Sol: Average speed =
We know that the combined
average always lies in between
individual averages. Therefore
by examining the given options,
it is found that the combined
average lies between 40 to 50. It
can not lie between 35 to 45, 32
to 42 and 48 to 58.
