Survey says ...

Americans pessimism on economy has grown

BY JOSH BOAK
Associated Press

WASHINGTON Americans are more

anxious about the economy now than they
were right after the Great Recession ended
despite stock market gains, falling unemployment and growth moving closer to full health.
Seventy-one percent of Americans say they
think the recession exerted a permanent drag
on the economy, according to a survey being
released Thursday by Rutgers University. By
contrast, in November 2009, five months after
the recession officially ended, the Rutgers
researchers found that only 49 percent thought
the downturn would have lasting damage.
And that was when the unemployment rate
was 9.9 percent, compared with the current

6.2 percent.
Theyre more negative than they were
five years ago, said Rutgers public policy
professor Carl Van Horn.
The slow pace of improvement during
most of the recovery, now in its sixth year,
has eroded confidence and slowed a return
to the pay levels that many enjoyed before
the economy suffered its worst collapse
since the 1930s. About 42 percent of those
surveyed say they have less pay and savings
than before the recession began in late 2007.
Just 7 percent say theyre significantly better off.
The survey results dovetail with estimates that the median household income
was $53,891 in June, according to Sentier
Research. Thats down from an inflation-

adjusted $56,604 at the start of the recession.

Each year of subpar growth has compounded the anxieties of many Americans.
In contrast to the robust snapbacks that
coincided with most economic rebounds, this
recovery proved tepid well after the recession had ended. Consumers struggled with
an overhang of mortgage debt and the risk of
layoffs for much of the recovery. A majority
of those surveyed say they fear that job security has all but disappeared and that theyll
have little choice but to work part time during
retirement.
No current worker had ever experienced
this before, Van Horn said. This recession
was everywhere.
Researchers at Rutgers John J. Heldrich
Center for Workforce Development surveyed

online a national cross-section of 1,153 adults

between July 24 and Aug. 3. The margin of
error was plus or minus 3 percentage points.
The survey is part of a broader series of polls
taken over multiple years to study the consequences of the recession for workers.
Recent evidence of economic strength
has done little to brighten most Americans
outlooks. The Standard and Poors 500 stock
index has surged more than 170 percent since
bottoming in March 2009. Yet only 14 percent of the respondents said the gains have
affected them a lot a sign of either meager
investments or the extent to which families
unloaded their stock holdings near the bottom
of the market.

Athletic Boosters will be
looking for more laughs
during their second annual
Comey Nigh Sept. 13 to raise
funds for athletic programs at
the school.
This is one of our biggest
fundraisers, booster member
Ken Kreeger said. We use
our funds to buy equipment,
uniforms and pay for trans-

portation costs of the teams.

Comedians Mike Green
and Kevin Kramis will each
take the stage that night for
45-minute shows.
Tickets for the comedy night cost $25, which
includes a sit-down, buffetstyle meal. Soft drinks, water
and ice will be provided with
coolers welcome. No alchohol will be served.
We also have a table of
eight for $250, which will
give those at that table a
choice of where they want to

be, Kreeger said. They can

choose to be right up front
or to sit in back. That will be
their preference.
The event will take place
at the St. Johns All Saints
Building. Doors open at 6
p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m.
Must be 21 to enter.
Tickets for the event can
be purchased at the St. Johns
Ministry Center, Delphos
Granite Works or by contacting Mark Fischer at 419-6955865 or Kreeger at 567-7651877.

fun, Geise said. We each

dressed in the foreign countrys cultural garb.
She said Doris Clawson represented Mexico, Gloria (Stout)
Anspugh represented Canada
and the runner-up, Glenna (Ditto)
Kelly ,dressed as Lady Liberty.
Geise remembers the
spectacular floats that were
pulled down Main Street by
cars during the parade. She
said one float was sponsored
by appliance dealers.
Another was inspired by

the popular song Surrey with

the Fringe on Top a song
from the film Oklahoma,
Geise reminisced and sang
the tune. Chicks and ducks
and geese better scurry when
I take you out in the surrey,
when I take you out in the
surrey with the fringe on top.
She said Clawson rode
on the appliance float, Sally
Jauman and Rita Hammons
rode the surrey float and
some floats had no people
on them.

At that time, store owners really got into the spirit

of Canal Days, she added
It was not long after
World War II was over, businesses were prospering and
the community was ready for
a good time, Geise chuckled.
Most merchants - Grants,
Murphys and Shenks put
different souvenirs outside to
attract and draw customers
into their stores.

Getting Out of Gods Way

The late writer Flannery OConnor kept a devotional journal when she was in
her twenties and a student at the Iowa Writers Workshop. It has recently been published under the title A Prayer Journal. OConnor was a fervent Catholic and her
journal is filled with interesting reflections on spirituality, as well as writing, which
she saw as a way to express her spirituality and hopefully lead others to God. She
laments early on that I do not know you God because I am in the way. Please help
me to push myself aside. Throughout the journal we witness an earnest young
woman struggling heroically to be more pious, and striving to get out of Gods
way, i.e., how to get rid of the ego and let God fill up the space. Her simultaneous
struggle to destroy the ego while seeking literary fame is sometimes the focus of
her reflections, as when she says Dont let me ever think, dear God, that I was
anything but the instrument for Your story, just like the typewriter was mine. God
desires to work through all of us, through our words and our deeds, if we can only
get our egos out of His way.
- Christopher Simon

For we are Gods handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good

works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Ephesians 2:10

Our local churches invite you to join them for their activities and services.

St. Johns in volleyball

DELPHOS The young St. Johns Blue Jays volleyball
team played their third match in four days to start the 2014
campaign at home against Midwest Athletic Conference
foe Fort Recovery Thursday night.
The Lady Jays looked impressive in their season opener
against Van Wert on Monday by winning the first two sets of
the match but dropped the final three.
St. Johns gained its first victory of the year by knocking off
Spencerville the next night 25-16, 22-25, 25-6, 25-22.
The M.A.C. is strong year after year in volleyball and St.
Johns can never seem to make any progress in the win column
against their conference rivals. The Blue Jays were competitive against the Indians but dropped the match in 4 sets 16-25,
25-15, 14-25, 9-25.
The first set start was nip and tuck as the Blue Jays pulled
within one at 8-7 on a kill by Jessica Geise. After the Indians
scored straight points at the midway mark of the game, head
coach Carolyn Dammeyer called timeout after an ace serve
by the Indians Payton Thobe.
After the break, both squads traded points on slams by Tori
Lennartz for the Indians and the Blue Jays Olivia Kahney. The
rest of the game belonged to Fort Recovery.
Game two saw seven lead changes to open the set, eventually being tied at 11. The Lady Jays scored seven unanswered
points highlighted by kills by Rebekah Fischer, Maddie
Buettner and Kahney. During the run, Maddie Pohlman had
eight straight serves including an ace. Fort Recovery finally
stopped the streak when Kendra Siefrings return touched
down between the Jays defense.

DELPHOS Allen East grabbed

a 3-0 lead after 20-plus minutes of its
girls soccer matchup versus host St.
Johns Thursday night and secured a 5-2
victory in non-league action at the St.
Johns Annex.
The Lady Mustangs (2-1-1) dominated the action in the first half, launching 14 shots on-goal (5 for the Lady
Blue Jays) and forcing senior netminder
Sam Wehri (14 total saves vs. 22 shots
on-goal) to make nine stops, several of
the diving variety, as sophomores Leah
Casey and Jade Meyer in particular were
difficult to deal with up front.
Sam was brilliant in goal; she flatout kept us in the match, Jays coach
Katrina Smith explained. Meyer and
Casey were too good; every time we
made a mistake like fell for the faint
or didnt stay in front they burned us.
Basically, they were mental mistakes,
like stabbing for the ball.
Mustang coach Lamar Houston figures those two open it up for everyone
else.
We have about six girls that we
feel can score. Those two, along with
Savannah (Silone), are marked quite a
bit by the defense, Houston said. That
opens it up for the others to get good
opportunities. We got penty of them but
we struggled finishing. We could have
had several more. We start seven sophomores and two freshmen, so were still a
work in progress.
The Jays (0-2-1) had the first shot
on-goal at 37:45 when sophomore Maria
Giambruno-Fuge was denied from 25
yards by sophomore goalkeeper Kassidy
Reneau (8 saves vs. 14 shots on-goal).
Wehri made a 1-on-1 stop of a
16-yarder by Casey at 34:49.
However, she couldnt deny the visitors at 30:03 when Meyer threaded a
through pass to Casey for a good run
down the right post and her 16-yarder
hit off a defender and slid into the inside
of that post for a 1-0 edge.
At 24:32, Wehri denied sophomore
Marie Beach on a 24-yarder but at
22:44, Meyer got possession for a quick
counter and her 15-yarder from the right
post found the back of the net for a 2-0
edge.
Wehri made a diving deflection of

a 10-yarder by Casey at 22:10 but at
19:08, the junior Silone delivered a
corner kick from the left side and found
Meyer for an 8-yarder header from the
middle that found the right side of the
net for a 3-0 lead.
Wehri was big in an 8-second stretch
starting at 16:36 when she denied Casey
and freshman Sophia Silone twice on
ricochets.
The Jays finally got on board at 15:25
when junior Rachel Pohlman passed
inside to sophomore Carleigh Ankerman
for a 12-yarder that found the left post
and bounced in for a 3-1 scoreboard.
At the 7-minute mark, Ankerman got
behind the defense on the left wing and
Reneau came out to knock the ball from
her; on the deflection, senior Emilee
Grothouses 25-yarder versus an open
goal was just wide left.
The Jays evened things up the second half as they outshot the visitors
9-8. However, Reneau was up to the
task, stopping five of them and getting
a couple of lucky breaks to go her way.
At 29:05, Ankerman got a 20-yarder
that just missed over the top of the
crossbar.
Unfortunately, the Mustangs made it
4-1 at 23:54 when Casey found Meyer
on a through ball down the right post

and her 14-yarder went opposite side

and into the twine.
The hosts got within 4-2 at 13:29
courtesy of a cross pass from right to left
by junior Lanna Klausing to freshman
Marie Mueller, whose 16-yarder just got
over the fingertips of Reneau and into
the net.
The Jays nearly got within 4-3 at 3:41
when Em Grothouse fired a 19-yarder
from the left post but Reneau deflected
it wide.
At 2:53, Ankerman got a golden
chance in front of the net but her 8-yarder hit the bar and went out of bounds.
Allen East tacked on the finale with
just 12 ticks left. On a steal, Meyer was
1-on-1 and with Wehri slightly out, her
14-yarder just slid off Wehris fingertips
and into the goal.
If we had only played with the
same sense of urgency the rest of the
match that we did the second half and
the first six minutes, wed have been
fine, Smith added. You could see we
grew up some the second half: we kept
our composure more, we didnt panic
with a defender on us, we made better
passes.
St. Johns is host to Lima Senior

Everyone watching as
Barrett takes over for Miller
By RUSTY MILLER
Associated Press
COLUMBUS There are a lot of
ways to describe J.T. Barretts new,
amplified role for Ohio State.
His teammates and coaches say
Barrett has taken over as No. 5 Ohio
States starting quarterback as if that
were the plan all along.
It wasnt, of course. Barrett, a freshman, got the job when 2-time Big Ten
player of the year Braxton Miller reinjured his throwing shoulder 10 days ago
and was lost for the season.
Offensive coordinator Tom Herman,
tongue in cheek, said the Buckeyes
would try to keep things simple when
Barrett starts his first college game on
Saturday against Navy in Baltimore.
We dont ask the quarterback to be
a rocket surgeon by any stretch of the
imagination, never have and never will,
said Herman, who despite those words
is a card-carrying member of MENSA,
the organization for those with extraordinarily high intellects. We might actually make a more conscious effort to
keep it simple but not a ton less than we
already do.
Quarterback? Yes. Rocket scientist?
No. Brain surgeon? No. And definitely
not a rocket surgeon.
Luckily, Barrett has met most other
requirements of the job. Coach Urban
Meyer says Barrett is doing a great job
handling one of the highest profile jobs
at the college level.
To illustrate the problems that a
player in his first collegiate game can
encounter, Meyer told a story about Alex
Smith, who stumbled in his debut under
Meyer at Utah in 2003.
Ill never forget Alex Smith couldnt
say the first play when I put him in
against Utah State in the fourth quarter,
recalled Meyer, with a grin. We were
winning. We called the play and I said,
Alex, say that play back to me. He
couldnt say the play. I thought, I wonder if this guy will ever be any good.
Smith became a No. 1 draft pick and
solid NFL quarterback.
Meyer didnt permit Barrett to speak
with reporters this week, saying, Were

answered with a slam of her own as the Jays rolled to a 25-15 victory.
Unlike the first two games that started out close, the Indians
jumped out to a 12-4 lead in game three. A block by Buettner
dropped in for a St. Johns point but the Blue Jay serve was long
on the next play and Thobe dropped in another ace to force a St.
Johns timeout.
Things continued to go right for the Indians as Caley
Schoenherrs return was low but bounced off a teammate and
over the net for the 10-point lead. Buettner had two more kills but
it wasnt enough as the Jays fell 25-14.
Fort Recovery jumped out early in the fourth game to take a commanding 7-0 lead. Fortunately for St. Johns, a return by the Indians
fell short into the net to give them their first point. The Blue Jays
notched three straight points on kills by Fischer, Buettner and Kahny
forcing the Indians to call time. The pep talk by the Indians coach
paid off as they rattled of the next six points.
Even after another slam by Siefring gave Fort Recovery a
10-point lead, the Jays defense began to step up. St. Johns fought off
three slams by Tori Lennartz during the next volley on great digs by
the back line of Kennedy Clarkson and Kestley Hulihan. But it wasnt
enough as Fort Recovery won 25-9 to win the match in four games.
After the match, a tired coach Dammeyer was disappointed not
to get the M.A.C. victory: We are a young team and had too many
unforced errors again tonight. It was like a domino effect as one
player would make a mistake, the next player would lose confidence
and make the next error. We simply gave up too many easy points.
Maddie Buettner lead the Jays with eight kills and six, aided by
Jessica Geise (6 kills, 3 blocks), Rebekah Fischer (4 kills, 3 blocks),
Maddie Pohlman (4 kills, 3 blocks) and Colleen
Schulte (16 assists).
With the win, Fort Recovery improves to 5-1 (1-0 M.A.C.) and St.
Johns falls to 1-2 (0-1).
The Jays host Kenton 11 a.m. Saturday.

Kasich detractors options

dwindle as fall arrives
BY JULIE CARR SMYTH
AP Statehouse Correspondent

COLUMBUS So youre among the

half of Ohio voters who werent planning
to vote for John Kasich. What now?
With the Republican governors
Libertarian and tea party foes sidelined
and his Democratic rivals campaign disintegrating, pundits and partisans find themselves wondering what path non-Kasich
supporters will choose on Election Day.
They could skip over the race between
Kasich and embattled Democratic challenger Ed FitzGerald, throw their support
behind the longshot third-party ticket, or
just stay home.
After a series of political missteps,
including revelations he lacked a permanent drivers license for a decade,
FitzGerald has seen an exodus of top
campaign aides and recently announced
hed be diverting a significant chunk of
his campaign cash to Democrats get-outthe-vote efforts.
Generals dont generally go down on
the battlefield, but when they do its felt
all the way down to the privates, said
University of Cincinnati political scientist
David Niven. This is going to depress
Democratic turnout for sure.
At the same time, Kasich has been a
polarizing figure. After winning a close
2010 race against Democratic incumbent
Ted Strickland, he warned Statehouse
lobbyists to get on the bus or be run over
by it. He signed into law divisive collective bargaining limits on public worker
unions overturned by 60 percent of Ohio

Fair

voters in 2011. Appointees have at times

said Kasichs team bullied them out of
their jobs.
A Quinnipiac University poll released
in July showed fewer than half of Ohio
voters 48 percent were ready to vote
for Kasich. That figure represented a significant advantage over FitzGerald, whom
only 36 percent of voters favored even
before his latest troubles. But, according
to that same poll, 54 percent of Ohio voters backed Kasich at this point in his 2010
race against Strickland, a much more formidable and well-funded challenger.
Conservatives who wanted to see an
alternative to Kasich on the Nov. 4 ballot are still likely to show up at the
polls to vote for local issues, predicts tea
party leader Tom Zawistowski, but theyll
probably abstain from casting a vote for
governor.
I think it can send a message not to
vote for him, Zawistowski said. It can
send a message that I have no choice.
He said Kasich and his supporters
have shut out other conservative voices
and attacked FitzGerald full-force because
they wanted to win by a landslide in order
to pave the way to a White House bid:
The (Republican) conventions going to
be in Cleveland and theyre doing everything to make it a Kasich coronation.
Baldwin-Wallace University political
science professor Barbara Palmer called
that a stretch.
I dont see Kasich as the scorched
earth candidate. He tried the scorchedearth approach with the unions and it
backfired, and hes smart enough to learn

from that, she said. He seems to be running what Id call a textbook campaign.
For Democrats, the main question is
how damaging the waning support for
FitzGerald will be for their down-ticket
candidates.
When asked about residual effects of
FitzGeralds troubles on other statewide
candidates, state Sen. Nina Turner, the
Democratic secretary of state candidate,
said, quoting Winston Churchill, When
youre going through hell, you keep on
going and thats pretty much what we are
doing.
FitzGeralds Aug. 22 decision to divert
money to get-out-the-vote efforts touted by former President Bill Clinton as
a key to Ohio Democrats victory in the
state this year could bolster some of
the partys stronger candidates, including state Reps. John Patrick Carney and
Connie Pillich. They are challenging
Auditor Dave Yost and Treasurer Josh
Mandel, respectively.
Niven said if Kasich wins by a landslide, FitzGeralds shortcomings not
any Kasich aspirations for the White
House are to blame.
This has been one of the great unexpected gifts that a candidate has received,
he said. The totality of Ed FitzGeralds
being unable to function as a candidate,
no one could have predicted that. With
Kasich having won the first time with just
49 percent of the vote, in a quintessential
purple state, and having 60 percent of
Ohioans renounce one of his signature
policies? This was anything but a slam
dunk.

A&Fs shares tumble

as teens turn elsewhere
BY ANNE
DINNOCENZIO
Associated Press

NEW ALBANY The

Abercrombie & Fitch logo
has lost the power it once
wielded.
Shares of Abercrombie &
Fitch Co. tumbled Thursday
after reporting weak sales as
more teens shop elsewhere.
The company is trying
to stock trendier clothing
and it turns out that means
stripping off the once-prized
Abercrombie logo.
The New Albany, Ohiobased retailer reported that
revenue fell 5.8 percent to
$890.6 million, short of analyst estimates.
Revenue at stores open at
least a year dropped a steep
11 percent, including 8 percent at U.S. stores. The companys earnings per share beat
estimates.
A&F and other traditional
teen stores are facing an uphill
battle to turn their businesses
around as mall traffic drops
and shoppers tastes change.
A slowly recovering
economy is making parents and teens to think twice
about splurging on clothes.
Expensive standbys like
Abercrombie also have lost
business to fast fashion
chains like H&M, known for
quickly churning out trendy
$9 tops.

Teens are also spending

less time at the mall and more
time researching and buying
on mobile devices. And when
they do buy, theyre more
likely buying the latest gadget
than filling their closets.
Last week, Aeropostale
last week reported its seventh
consecutive quarterly loss on
slumping sales. It also forecast another loss in the current
quarter.
At the same time,
Aeropostale, based in New
York, reinstated Julian Geiger,
its former CEO.
Earnings at another competitor, American Eagle, have
also declined on weak sales.
Mike Jeffries, A&Fs
CEO, said in a statement that
the retailer has made progress
in stocking trendier clothing and said the progress is
clearly evident in its backto-school business.
In a continuing challenging environment, our sales
for the second quarter were
somewhat below plan, but we
have seen modest improvement since the back-to-school
floor set, he added.
For example, A&F is getting rid of most of its logoed
clothing at U.S. stores,
because it has fallen out of
favor with teens. Jeffries told
investors on a call with analysts Thursday that it reduced
its logoed clothing by half this
fall compared to a year ago.

DEAR ABBY: I
raised three kids in
a normal household,
putting them to bed
between two sheets.
Now my two younger
ones no longer sleep
between sheets, but
wrapped up in a
blanket on a sheetless
mattress. One of them
has children, and is
passing the habit on to
them.
The only thing
I can conclude is
that its laziness,
and Im wondering
where I went wrong.

DEAR

ABACK: People have
varying sleep styles.
If, when your children
lived with you, you
taught them to launder
their sheets and make
their beds, then you
didnt go wrong. (One
can only hope they
wash those blankets
regularly.)
If possible, invite
your

for years. Hes my
older brothers friend,
and were only six
years apart. When I
expressed my interest
in him, he politely
let me know that he
would not date me
because of my brother.
Is there a secret
code that Im missing?
Is it taboo for a man
who is your older
brothers friend to date
the younger sibling?
I am confused as to
why it would matter
since we are both
adults. -- LONELY IN
WISCONSIN
DEAR LONELY:
While it isnt taboo
to date the sibling of a
close friend, it can lead
to complications if the
relationship doesnt
work out. Friendships
have become strained
or ended because of it.
Not knowing the
man you have your
sights set on, I cant
speculate whether the
reason he gave you
was the truth. It could
also be that the feelings
you have for him are
not reciprocated, but
regardless -- now that
you know he isnt
interested, its time
to look elsewhere for
someone to assuage
your loneliness.

Jihadists kill
dozens of captured
Syrian soldiers
RYAN LUCAS
Associated Press
BEIRUT The Islamic
State group killed more than
160 Syrian government troops
seized in recent fighting, posting pictures Thursday of terrified young conscripts stripped
down to their underwear
before meeting their deaths
in the arid Syrian countryside.
The slayings were the latest massacre attributed to the
extremist group, which has
terrorized rivals and civilians
alike with widely publicized
brutality in Syria and Iraq as it
seeks to expand a proto-state
it has carved out on both sides
of the border.
In southern Syria, meanwhile, gunmen detained 43
U.N. peacekeepers during
fighting on the Syrian side of
the Golan Heights, the United
Nations said. It added that
another 81 peacekeepers were
trapped in the area by heavy
clashes between rebels and
Syrian troops.
The mass killing of Syrian
soldiers is part of a stepped
up campaign by Islamic State
militants targeting President
Bashar Assads forces. Until
recently, the group had been
focused on eliminating rivals
among the rebels fighting
to topple him, systematically routing Western-backed
opposition fighters and other
Islamic factions from towns
and villages in northern and
eastern Syria as it expands.

UN: Ebola disease

caseload could
reach 20,000
KRISTA LARSON
Associated Press
GENEVA The Ebola
outbreak in West Africa is
accelerating and could grow
six times larger to infect as
many as 20,000 people, the
World Health Organization
said Thursday. The U.N.
health agency unveiled a new
road map for containing the
virus, and scientists are fasttracking efforts to find a treatment or vaccine.
Ebola has menaced Africa
for 40 years, but previously
struck in remote villages and
was contained fairly quickly.
This time, it has spread to
major cities in four countries,
provoking unrest as whole
neighborhoods and towns
have been sealed to the outside.
An experimental vaccine
developed by the U.S. government and GlaxoSmithKline
will be tested on humans
starting next week, the U.S.
National Institutes of Health
announced Thursday. The
NIH trial will use healthy
adult volunteers in Maryland,
and British experts will simultaneously test the same vaccine in healthy people in the
U.K., Gambia and Mali.
Preliminary results on
the vaccines safety not
its effectiveness could be
available in months.
Scientists also announced
that they have mapped the
genetic code of this strain of
Ebola to better understand
how it kills. In a study published Thursday in the journal
Science, researchers traced an
explosion of cases in this outbreak to a single funeral in
Guinea in May.
They hope to use the genetic mapping to track mutations
that could become more worrisome the longer the outbreak
lasts, and make a difference
in how doctors spot and fight
the disease as vaccines are
developed.
The outbreak has now
killed at least 1,552 people
among 3,069 reported cases in
Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea
and Nigeria, and the real
caseload in urban areas could
be two to four times higher.
Meanwhile, an entirely separate Ebola outbreak has killed
13 of 42 people sickened in
a remote area of Congo, in
Central Africa, the agency
said.
With about a 50 percent
mortality rate among those
known to be infected, the
overall death toll could reach
10,000 in the worst-case scenario.
I think thats completely
unacceptable, said the agencys emergency operations
director, Dr. Bruce Aylward.

Obama sets no timeline

for action on immigration
WASHINGTON (AP) With a selfimposed deadline looming, President
Barack Obama said Thursday he still
intends to act on his own to change immigration policies but stopped short of reiterating his past vows to act by end of summer.
Obama raised the slim hope that Congress
could take action on a broad immigration
overhaul after the midterm elections in
November. He said that if lawmakers did
not pass an overhaul, Im going to do what
I can to make sure the system works better.
But for the first time since pledging
to act by summers end, he signaled that
such a target date could slip. He said
that the administration had been working to reduce the flow of unaccompanied
minors attempting to cross the border and
noted that the number of apprehensions at
the border had fallen in August.
Some of these things do affect time
lines and were just going to be working through as systematically as possible
in order to get this done, he said in a
news conference where he also addressed
Russian aggression in Ukraine and action
against Islamic State militants.
Two months ago, Obama angrily conceded that the House did not intend to
take up immigration legislation this year
and ordered Homeland Security Secretary
Jeh Johnson and Attorney General Eric
Holder to come up with actions the president could take on his own.
I expect their recommendations
before the end of summer and I intend
to adopt those recommendations without
further delay, he said at the time.
Since then, the administration was
forced to deal with the sharp rise of young
migrants from Central America who were
crossing the southwest border. Obama
asked Congress for $3.7 billion to deal
with the flow, a request that Republican
lawmakers rejected.
At the same time, some Democrats

worried that if Obama took action on

his own to reduce deportations it would
mobilize Republican voters in hotly contested Senate races.
Frank Sharry of the pro-immigrant
group Americas Voice said there were
no indications the White House planned
to delay the announcement, and lots
of evidence Obama is preparing for an
announcement in September.
If for whatever reasons they decide
to delay, its going to be a huge problem
for an immigration reform movement that
has worked tirelessly for years and been
promised action for years, Sharry said.
I dont think people are going to take a
delay without a big response.
Obama said Thursday that addressing the
inflow of unaccompanied minors has not
stopped the process of looking into how do
we get a smart immigration system in place
while were waiting for Congress to act.
And it continues to be my belief that,
if I cant see the congressional action, that
I need to do at least what I can in order to
make the system work better.
The most sweeping, controversial
step under consideration involves halting deportation for millions, a major
expansion of a 2012 Obama program that
deferred prosecutions for those brought
here illegally as children.
Roughly half a million people have benefited from that program, known as Deferred
Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA.
In a sign of how heated the demands
on Obama to act have become, 145 protesters were arrested midday Thursday in
front of the White House in an act of civil
disobedience. Demanding a halt to deportations, protesters draped themselves in
American flags and held signs saying I
am a witness for justice as onlookers
cheered them on. The U.S. Park Police
said the protesters were charged with
blocking the sidewalk.

Jolie, Pitt wed privately

at chateau in France
NEW YORK (AP) The wait is finally over: Brad Pitt
and Angelina Jolie, Hollywoods reigning royal couple, have
tied the knot.
Despite two years of feverish scrutiny, the pair managed to
keep one of the worlds most anticipated weddings shrouded
from the medias glare.
When? Where? Why havent they yet? Did they already?
The celebrity press and Brangelina fans alike had been consumed with the matrimonial mystery.
On Thursday, a spokeswoman for the couple confirmed
to The Associated Press that they wed Saturday in a private
ceremony in Southern France. The representative, who spoke
on the condition of anonymity because she was not authorized
to be quoted by name, said Jolie and Pitt exchanged vows in
a small chapel at the Chateau Miraval in the Provence hamlet
of Correns.
Since 2008, Miraval has been the couples Southern France
home, a sprawling estate they bought three years ago.
The union was less a vow of commitment than the official
affirmation of one made long ago. Pitt and Jolie have been
together nearly a decade and have six children, all of whom
participated in the wedding.
The wedding may have been cloaked in secrecy, but Pitt
and Jolie are preparing to be a big presence at the movies this
fall. Pitt stars in the upcoming World War II drama Fury, due
out Oct. 17. Jolies second directorial effort, the World War II
odyssey Unbroken, will be released in December.
On Thursday, Pitt was far from any honeymoon hideaway.
Instead, he was at the Bovington Tank Museum in Dorset,
U.K., promoting Fury, a brutal tale about a tank of American
soldiers rolling through Europe in the final days of World War
II.
Both movies could be major players in Hollywoods award
season, which last year was dominated by a film produced
by Pitt, the best picture-winning historical drama 12 Years a
Slave.
At Saturdays ceremony, Jolie walked the aisle with
her eldest sons, 13-year-old Maddox and 10-year-old Pax.
Daughters Zahara, 9, and Vivienne, 6, threw flower petals.
Eight-year-old Shiloh and Knox, 6, served as ring bearers, the
couples spokesman said.
In advance of the nondenominational civil ceremony, Pitt
and Jolie obtained a marriage license from a local California
judge. The judge also conducted the ceremony in France.
Pitt once said that he didnt want to marry until gay marriage was legal everywhere, but in recent years, the couple had
said publicly they intended to. They were engaged in early
2012 after some seven years together.

Ukraine accuses Russia of sending in tanks, armor

JIM HEINTZ and
RAF CASERT
Associated Press
NOVOAZOVSK, Ukraine
Ukraine accused Russia on Thursday
of entering its territory with tanks,
artillery and troops, and Western
powers said Moscow had outright
lied about its role and dangerously
escalated the conflict.
Russia dismissed the allegations, describing the fighters there as
Russian volunteers. The Kremlin
has repeatedly denied arming and
supporting the separatists who have
been fighting Ukrainian troops for
four months in the gravest crisis
between Russia and the West since
the end of the Cold War.
NATO said at least 1,000 Russian
troops are in Ukraine and later
released what it said were satellite
photos of Russian self-propelled artillery units moving last week.
Two columns of tanks and other
equipment entered southeastern
Ukraine at midday, following heavy

shelling of the area from Russia that

forced overmatched Ukrainian border guards to flee, said Col. Andriy
Lysenko, a spokesman for Ukraines
national security council.
Russian forces have entered
Ukraine, President Petro Poroshenko
said in Kiev, canceling a foreign trip
and calling an emergency meeting of
his security council.
He urged Ukrainians to remain
calm.
Destabilization of the situation
and panic, this is as much of a weapon
of the enemy as tanks, Poroshenko
told the council.
U.S. President Barack Obama
spoke with German Chancellor
Angela Merkel, and both leaders
agreed Russia must face consequences for its actions.
We agree if there was ever any
doubt that Russia is responsible
for the violence in eastern Ukraine,
Obama said. The violence is encouraged by Russia. The separatists are
trained by Russia, they are armed by
Russia, they are funded by Russia.

He added that Russia has deliberately and repeatedly violated the

sovereignty and territorial integrity
of Ukraine, and the new images of
Russian forces inside Ukraine make
that plain for the world to see.
But Obama ruled out a military
confrontation between the U.S. and
Russia. He said Russias activity in
Ukraine would incur more costs and
consequences, though these seemed
to be limited to economic pressure
that will be discussed when Obama
meets with European leaders at a
NATO summit in Wales next week.
At an emergency session of the
U.N. Security Council, Western representatives expressed outrage.
Now we see irrefutable evidence
of regular Russian forces operating inside Ukraine, said British
Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant.
U.S. Ambassador Samantha Power
said Russia has manipulated. It has
obfuscated. It has outright lied.
Russian Ambassador Vitaly
Churkin offered a spirited defense,
saying Kiev is waging war against

its own people.

He did deny not the Russian presence, saying there are Russian volunteers in eastern parts of Ukraine.
No one is hiding that.
But Power countered: A Russian
soldier who chooses to fight in
Ukraine on summer break is still a
Russian soldier.
Churkin questioned the presence
of Western advisers and asked where
Ukrainian troops were getting weapons. He said he wanted to send a
message to Washington: Stop interfering in the internal affairs of sovereign states.
Russian stock markets fell as
Switzerland joined the European
Union in imposing restrictions on
Russian state banks and fears grew
that the U.S. and EU could impose
more sanctions on Russian businesses
and individuals in response to the
military escalation. Russias MICEX
index dropped nearly 2 percent on
Thursday, and major Russian state
banks VTB and Sberbank dropped
more than 4 percent.

US rebukes Oklahoma for ditching school standards

KEN MILLER
Associated Press
OKLAHOMA CITY President Barack
Obamas administration on Thursday stripped
Oklahoma of authority to decide how to spend
$29 million in education funding because the state
abandoned national academic standards known as
Common Core, in a rebuke that a union official said
could lead to teacher layoffs.
The U.S. Department of Education said it was
hitting Oklahoma with the sanction under the No
Child Left Behind Act because the state could no
longer demonstrate that its school standards were
preparing students for college and careers.
The Republican-dominated Oklahoma Legislature
voted this year to ditch Common Core, a national
benchmark for what students should learn in such

subjects as math and English that has been adopted

in more than 40 states. GOP Gov. Mary Fallin signed
the measure into law and Oklahoma will revert to
weaker standards in place in 2010.
Following the announcement, Fallin blasted
Obama and the federal government for the decision
and said Oklahoma would fight vigorously.
It is outrageous that President Obama and
Washington bureaucrats are trying to dictate how
Oklahoma schools spend education dollars, she
said in a statement. This is one more example of
an out-of-control presidency that places a politicized Washington agenda over the well-being of
Oklahoma students.
Common Core has drawn a chorus of complaints from conservatives, who see it as a federal
power grab over education, traditionally a state and
local matter. Louisianas Republican Gov. Bobby

Employers have added an average of more

The gap between the index and the Rutgers
survey likely reflects the type of questions
posed by the university researchers. They
asked about family finances, job satisfaction, retirement plans and the specific consequences of the recession. By contrast, the
confidence index asks about broader perceptions of business and employment conditions
and plans to buy autos, homes and household
appliances.

Jindal, a possible 2016 presidential candidate, filed

a lawsuit Wednesday against the Obama administration, accusing it of illegally manipulating federal grant money to force states to adopt Common
Core. In addition to Oklahoma, the Republican-led
states of Indiana and South Carolina have ditched
Common Core.
Washington is the only other state to have faced
a federal sanction similar to Oklahoma, although
the issue there was how teachers were evaluated
rather than overall academic standards. More than
40 states have received waivers from the department of education, essentially approvals to states
allowing flexibility in how federal money is spent
under No Child Left Behind. Indiana and Kansas
were granted one-year waivers under the education
law Thursday, in sharp contrast to the Oklahoma
decision.
