The Retrofit Concept

Revitalising Engines
The retrot concept
MAN Diesels retrot concept consists of a broad range of
solutions where its PrimeServ after-sales division applies
the latest developments within diesel technology to
engines in service, in the process bringing them up to cur-
rent standards and meeting modern emission levels and
lowering running costs.
The concept applies to all MAN Diesel engines (both
marine and stationary), propellers and turbochargers. It
can even be applied to engines from other manufacturers
and has multiple benets for engines, vessels and
shipowners alike:
Improved engine performance
Engines in service updated to modern standards
Lower fuel and lube-oil consumption leading to lower
operating costs
Longer time between overhauls
Emissions reduction
Life-cycle extension
Monitoring and controlling equipment to facilitate
operations
Major fuel conversions where requested
Emissions reduction
MAN Diesel regularly introduces design innovations in the
eld of emissions reduction, while the IMOs Tier-II and Tier-III
emission regulations also exert a great inuence on modern
engine technology. MAN Diesels engine portfolio recently
became fully Tier-II compliant, and older two- and four-stroke
engine generations can easily be made compliant through
a variety of retrot techniques like the installation of slide
fuel-valves and start-limiters. The retrot concept also covers
more comprehensive installations such as the NO
x
-reducing
WIF (Water In Fuel)/FWE (Fuel Water Emulsication) system.
Monitoring and controlling equipment
Diesel technology becomes more advanced with every year
but MAN Diesel engines can be upgraded to reap the benet
of the new technology. This includes advances in monitoring
and controlling systems that improve safety and optimise your
engines performance. These include the PMI (cylinder-pres-
sure analyser) system and bearing-wear monitor.

Life-cycle extension/reliability improvement
Apart from techniques designed to upgrade your engines
performance, MAN Diesel PrimeServ can also enhance life-
times and general reliability, extending the useful life of your
engines through the retrotting of anti-corrosion valves and
coated nozzle rings, to mention just a few possibilities. More
comprehensive retrot options such as engine up-rating are
also available.

Fuel and lube oil-saving packages
The consumption of fuel- and lubricating-oil is one of the big-
gest expenses in modern shipping. PrimeServ can minimise
your engines oil use and maximise the return on your invest-
ment through the retrotting of cutting-edge technology de-
signed to make your vessel ever more efcient. This includes
such retrots as the Alpha Lubricator, stepped liners/pistons,
turbocharger retrot with VTA technology, and tailor-made
slow steaming on request.

Major fuel conversions
As the price and availability of fuel varies, it can become
more economical to change the fuel that powers your prime
mover, or at least to have the option of switching between
fuel types. Fuel conversion is a large undertaking but one in
which MAN Diesel PrimeServ has long experience, including:
Heavy Fuel Oil to Dual Fuel MAN Diesel four-stroke
48/60 and 32/40 engines and PC-engines
Gas conversion
Heavy Fuel Oil retrot-kit (common-rail retrot)
MAN Diesel PrimeServ provides original spare-parts and
service facilities for MAN Diesels two- and four-stroke diesel
engines, generating sets, turbochargers, CP propellers and
complete propulsion packages. To support this, it operates a
worldwide, round-the-clock service, 365 days a year through
a network of service headquarters and service centres.
