We're passionate about the power of education

Explore your options
in civil engineering
As a civil engineer you have a VIP ticket to all of
the towns hot spots. Sky Tower, Harbour Bridge,
Britomart without civil engineers they wouldnt
exist. In fact, civil engineers are involved in all
big infrastructure projects, such as motorways,
airports, harbours, dams, bridges and tunnels. They
also help us deal with pollution, trafc congestion
and other environmental problems. And with many
major new infrastructure projects currently being
planned, New Zealand alone will need thousands of
new civil engineering and land surveying graduates
over the next 10 years.
Unitec has trained many civil engineers and land
surveyors. Theyre now in senior roles in New
Zealand or across the globe. With our help you can
get there, too.
Study at the Department of Civil Engineering and
youll spend many hours in feldwork exercises.
You could be land surveying with the latest Global
Positioning Systems (GPS) equipment, or on feld
trips to real infrastructure projects like motorways,
bridges, tunnels and subdivisions. Youll be in our
soil, material and fuid engineering labs, working
with the latest Computer Aided Design (CAD)
programmes, and using numerical modelling and
project management software.
But most of all youll spend a lot of time with our
civil engineering and land surveying staf, who are
experts in all areas of civil engineering. Many of
them are Chartered Professional Engineers (CPEng),
members of IPENZ (Institution of Professional
Engineers New Zealand) or members of the
New Zealand Institute of Surveyors and Licensed
Cadastral Surveyors. A signifcant number of our
part-time lecturers are working in the industry
bringing current best practice to our real-world
curriculum. And all of them want to share their vast
expertise with you.
Our contact list reads like a whos who in civil
engineering. IPENZ, the New Zealand Contractors
Federation, the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors
and InfraTrain are all there. As are the major
companies listed below, as well as SKM, URS, Brian
Perry Civil Ltd, Woods, Harrison Grierson, Higgins,
Dempsey Wood, Morphum and Hiway Stabilizers.
This means plenty of opportunities for you to
meet representatives from top civil engineering
companies during guest lectures or at employers
nights. Which could mean holiday work,
scholarships, internships, cadetships or a job once
you graduate. It also means civil engineering
courses that refect the latest industry trends;
legislation; and local, global and environmental
issues. In other words, courses that will be
relevant to your career, wherever it might
take you.

Ive always had an interest in architecture and took physics, science and calculus at
college. The careers department suggested civil engineering as I wanted a career with
lots of job opportunities and variety. Civil engineering appeared to tick all the boxes. My
study was an awesome combination of practical and academic skills. Doing the diploma
frst gave me a really good grounding to build on and eased me into the subject. I love
the variety of my work its a fantastic mix of ofce and site work. Since graduating
from Unitec Ive completed a graduate rotation programme, which involved spending
a year working at a contracting frm, the council and as a consultant. Ive also gone
on to complete a Master of Engineering Studies (Transportation) at The University
of Auckland, and completed a Transpower Neighbourhood Engineer project with a
student from Rosehill Special School, which was really rewarding and enjoyable.

Ive always been a practical person. I like building
things and fguring out how they work. Now I build
structures like bridges, retaining walls and motorway
interchanges. Its really versatile - some days Im on site
all day and others Im in the ofce. I wasnt expecting to
move up the company so quickly. I even got a company
car which I didnt expect in my frst year out of uni! The
degree programme at Unitec is very practical with lots
of site visits and projects that are based on real-life
construction work. This really helped to make sense
of what we learnt in the classroom, and helped me
realise its what I want to do. Im really proud of my
IPENZ Award for graduating top of my class, and the
Hynds Engineering Award I got at the end of my studies.
I fnished my frst job last year, which was a huge
achievement for me. Its so rewarding to see the end
product and think oh yeah, I built that.

site supervisors, quantity surveyors, property
developers and architectural technicians are all key
pieces of the puzzle. Without their contribution a
project may not make it past the planning stage, let
alone become a completed building.

organisations. The Bachelor of Construction
(Construction Economics) is recognised by the
New Zealand Institute of Quantity Surveyors and
the Pacifc Association of Quantity Surveyors.
The Bachelor of Construction (Construction
Management) is accredited by the New Zealand
Institute of Building, and the Bachelor of
Construction (Property Development) by the
Property Institute of New Zealand. But no matter
what you study, all our programmes focus on
ensuring the construction industry is governed by
best practice from construction management to
property development.
We know all the big players in construction - such
as Fletcher, Hawkins Construction, Kalmar, Jasmax,
Stephenson & Turner, Beca, Davis Langdon,
NZStrong, Aspec, Rider Bucknell Levett and Arrow
International. Youll get to know them too, as many
leading companies stop by for a visit. There may be
holiday work up for grabs, perhaps a scholarship or
even permanent employment after you graduate.
Some of our students also team up with a senior
construction management or quantity surveying
practitioner for a year, thanks to our mentoring
scheme with the New Zealand Institute of Building
and the New Zealand Institute of Quantity
Surveying. Each year, the New Zealand Institute of
Building also sponsors a number of student awards.
And thanks to our strong links with Autodesk, you
can explore how Autodesk software can be applied
in building information modelling.

I like the varied work, as each job is unique. I love the ofce atmosphere we have
at CADViz, as the people are very supportive of questions. I was also fortunate
enough to have the opportunity to learn a new CAD program on the job. It adds
to my skill set and keeps things interesting. My Unitec qualifcation is very
signifcant for my current role it has laid the foundation to further my learning
and knowledge in my current job. It was encouraging that I was considered a
person rather than just a student number. I also thoroughly enjoyed the paper
History of Design. I was fond of learning about architects like Mies van der Rohe
and their past works. I liked how his interpretation of architectural design has had
an impact on todays infatuation with clean lines, free-fowing open spaces and
raw industrial steel and glass. Learning about these artists and how their ideas
have impacted the built environment really interested me.

Ive always been intrigued by the built environment
and I aspired to manage large commercial construction
projects. I started as a carpenter to get the practical
building knowledge and then moved onto the diploma
to get the management knowledge. My qualifcations
opened up employment opportunities and helped me
get to where I am now. Ive worked on lots of exciting
buildings including the iconic University of Auckland
Business School and buildings within the historic Mt
Eden Prison. The detail, planning and execution of the
buildings can be very challenging and exciting and I use
the theoretical knowledge I learnt at Unitec every day.
Im particularly proud of managing the ASB North Wharf
building site. It was a very technical and challenging build,
and Im proud to have left my mark on Auckland. The next
step for me is to progress into project management of
large commercial projects.

Explore civil engineering concepts, contract
administration and construction practice. Youll gain a
solid understanding of water engineering, structural
engineering and road infrastructures, and perfect your
civil and structural drafting skills.
There is great demand for technically trained engineers
worldwide, in particular those with a specialisation, so
the diploma allows you to focus on one of three areas:
Structures the building of dams, bridges, high-rise
buildings, viaducts and wharves.
Fluids food protection, harbour development,

Land surveyors have to be skilled in both measurement
and resource management. They collect and analyse
information about land, water and other natural
resources, and help manage our environment by
mapping the earth and the sea foor, establishing
property boundaries, and providing accurate data for
engineering works. The National Diploma in Surveying

The role of the quantity surveyor is diverse: evaluating
subcontractor tenders and making recommendations
to clients, managing construction costs and cash fows
during the construction phase, and negotiating and
agreeing project fnal accounts. In the Bachelor of

The Graduate Diploma in Construction Project
Management is a great stepping stone if you want to
move into management positions in the construction
sector. Learn to apply project management knowledge
to the construction industry to ensure contracts are
completed on time and on budget. Youll be able to
solve complex industry-related problems, in teams and
alone, and provide leadership in a team environment.

or draftsperson? Combining the latest computer
technology and manual drawing skills, they work
alongside architects to turn design concepts into
the documents to construct a building. The National
Diploma in Architectural Technology will give you the
skills to design and produce construction drawings for
both residential and commercial buildings.

Autodesk Training Centre
Professional development courses
Were part of the worldwide Autodesk Authorised
Training Centre network, and currently ofer training in
two Autodesk products:
AutoCAD: the leading 2D computer-aided design
package that has been the industry standard for the
last two decades.
Revit Architecture: state-of-the-art 3D software
used by most of the larger architecture practices
around the world.
The courses listed below are delivered as intensive
three-week blocks (from 6pm to 9pm two nights per
week) throughout the year. The tuition fee for each
course is $690 (including GST), or $450 (including
GST) for current students.

Introduction to AutoCAD Essentials Level I
This course is ideal for new AutoCAD users who want
comprehensive training in AutoCAD. It covers the
features, commands and techniques to create, edit
and print drawings with AutoCAD. The course includes
hands-on exercises where you explore how to create
2D production drawings.
Intermediate AutoCAD Professional Level II
This intermediate-level course builds on the basic
concepts covered in Introduction to AutoCAD. The
course is specifcally designed for experienced
AutoCAD users looking for additional training to
take full advantage of AutoCAD and become more
productive when creating, annotating and printing
drawings.
Revit Architecture Essentials Level I
This course covers the basics of Autodesk Revit
Architecture, from building design to construction
documentation. Youll be introduced to the concepts
of building information modelling and the tools for
parametric design and documentation. The course
includes hands-on exercises.
Revit Architecture Intermediate Level II
Learn about site design, advanced rendering techniques,
phasing and design options, creating families of
custom components and collaborating on a design. The
course includes hands-on exercises representing real-
world design scenarios and is taught by experienced
professionals from the architectural industry.

The indicative fee listed on the page for each
programme in this brochure was the approximate 2013
annual programme fee (including GST).
Programme fees for 2014 have not yet been set and
Unitec is currently reviewing them in the context of the
Ministry of Educations fees maxima policy. As soon as
they are approved, 2014 fees for these programmes
will be available on www.unitec.ac.nz
The indicative fee acts as a guide only. You will be
notifed of your exact fee when you have enrolled.

The programme fee you pay at enrolment covers
tuition and class materials. You will also have to pay a
Student Services fee and any applicable NZQA charges.
Textbooks for your programme are an additional cost.
The deadline for payment of student tuition fees is
seven days before your programme starts. You can pay
by cheque, EFTPOS, credit card or in the form of an
approved application for a student loan. (You should
apply for your student loan as early as possible to avoid

Our withdrawal policy
You may withdraw from a course by giving written
notice to Student Central (Te Pae Krero). If you
withdraw from a course before 10 percent of the course
has been completed you are generally entitled to a
refund of 90 percent of fees. There is no refund of fees
if you withdraw after this time, except in exceptional
circumstances. For full details, read the Admission,
Enrolment and Fees Policy available on our website at
www.enrolmentinfo.unitec.ac.nz
No record of the enrolment will be entered on your
academic record if you withdraw before 10 percent
of the course is completed. If you withdraw after
10 percent of the course is completed a grade of W
(representing withdrawal from the course) will appear
on your academic record.
An application for a refund must be made in writing and
on the prescribed form available from Student Central
(Te Pae Krero).

The Pacifc Centre team provides academic,
personal and cultural support for all Pacifc
