Kingmaker rises again as Nationals boat is rocked

By Arvind Kumar
IT has been called one of the dirtiest campaigns in
the history of New Zealand politics amid leaked
emails, plots, smear campaigns and resignations
clouding the political landscape ahead of the
general election in less than two weeks time.
Although the leaders of the main parties - John
Key (National) and David Cunliffe (Labour)
slugged it out to a tie in the second debate in
Christchurch on Tuesday, rumours of more
damaging leaks threaten to turn Nationals
campaign on its tail following Justice Minister
Judith Collins resignation last weekend.
Although Collins has quit as minister, she remains
the MP for Papakura, and will be contesting her
seat. Her downfall has been linked to former
Hanover Finance boss Mark Hotchin and a
smear campaign against the head of the Serious
Fraud Office, Adam Feeley. Hotchin was under
investigation by the SFO.
A leaked email from blogger Cameron Slater
claimed she had been gunning for Feeley while

she was minister in charge of SFO.

Mud-slinging and leaks aside, the one man who
appears to have emerged clear winner is once
again the kingmaker Winston Peters.
The old warhorse has New Zealand First at over
five per cent and has calmly eased himself on to
centre stage, where he appears smug.
The question of the moment is whether National
leader John Key needs Peters support to be able
to form a stable government.
The latest 3 News-Reid Research
shows Key cannot be Prime
Minister without Peters. Key
obviously will not want to be
dictated terms by Peters, and
thats when it could get chaotic,
irritatingly chaotic.
Meanwhile, the fallout from Nicky
Hagers book Dirty Politics is still lingering like
a bad smell. Hagers book is based on material
taken from Cameron Slater via hacking. The
book reveals Collins provided civil servant
Simon Pleasants details to Slater seemingly
as she suspected Pleasants leaked information

about Finance Minister Bill Englishs housing

allowance.
Key will be praying that the distraction that was
Judith Collins is now done and dusted, and that
the campaign can now roll on unhindered to
election day, September 20.
But wait, theres more: Internet Mana Party
bankroller Kim Dotcom has pledged to bring
down Key with more revelations.
As this edition of the Indian
Weekender was going to press,
much pressure from all quarters
was mounting for a need for a full
inquiry into the whole sorry saga.
Key was soon expcted to announce
the scope of the investigation into
Collins links with the right wing
bloggers.
Collins will co-operate with the pending inquiry.
Royal Commissions and Commissions of Inquiry
can require evidence to be produced and compel
witnesses to give evidence under oath.

May the best party win

Indian Weekender asked a set of questions to each of the political parties vying
to form the next government and heres what they came up with
NATIONAL PARTY
1. Name that one policy of your party that
will swing the elections in your favour ?
National wants to reward New Zealanders
for hard work and getting ahead. Weve
made it pretty clear that any tax cuts next
term would be pretty modest and only
if they can be afforded. In Budget 2014
we announced annual new spending and
revenue allowances of $1.5 billion a year
over the next three years. This would give us
room to consider modest tax cuts for lower
and middle income earners, alongside a bit
more spending on priority public services
and debt reduction.
2. The Herald DigiPoll shows that New
Zealanders feel an increased fear of
unavailability of employment as well as
getting burgled. What does your party
intend to do to assure people of safety and
security? What do you have to offer to the
migrant community?
Unemployment
New Zealands unemployment rate has
fallen to 5.6 per cent its lowest level in five
years with the number of people employed
increasing by 83,000 over the past year. The
challenge now is to continue to build on
this momentum so we have consistent and

sustained economic performance.

Crime
New Zealanders deserve to feel safe in their
homes and communities. We embarked on
a comprehensive programme of reform to
protect communities, prevent crime, and put
victims first. And its paying off. We now
have the lowest crime rate in 35 years, and
this is due, in large part, to our police.

While many developed countries around the

world are freezing or even reducing health
funding, National is investing an average
of $500m extra each year in public health
services. It is an important part of our plan
to deliver better care for families. National
brought in the policy of free GP visits
and prescriptions for children under six,
including free after-hours visits.

3. What is your partys stand on:

a) Housing affordability, especially in
Auckland?
The best way to make housing affordable is
to build a more competitive and productive
economy one of Nationals four key
priorities this term. Were focusing on
increasing the supply of houses to create
more affordable housing through housing
accords with local authorities.

d) Captial gains tax?

New Zealand needs more taxpayers, not
more taxes. Other countries like Australia
have a capital gains tax on housing and it
hasnt stopped rising house prices.

b) Improving education in the country?

Despite the tight fiscal environment total
spending on early childhood, primary and
secondary education will be $10.1 billion
in 2014/15. This clearly shows Nationals
commitment to education - we believe every
child deserves the best education possible.
Thats why National is investing an extra
$878m over four years to raise educational
achievement.
c) Better healthcare for all?

e) Increase of retirement age to 67?

National is committed to ensuring older New
Zealanders have the security, wellbeing, and
respect they deserve. National will maintain
the married rate of superannuation at 66 per
cent of the average wage and on our watch,
the age of eligibility will remain at 65.
f) Eradication of racial discrimination?
The National Party is focussed on ensuring
all New Zealanders are able to participate in
our communities, employment and decisionmaking, and can make a positive contribution
to our national success. We also support
better inter-cultural understanding and
respect between ethnicities by supporting

NZ
ELECTION
SPECIAL

initiatives.
4. In your manifesto, can you please
highlight your primary policies for New
Zealanders as well as special policies for
ethnic communities?
National supports practical initiatives that
make a real difference in the lives of ethnic
New Zealanders. If re-elected we will invest
$10 million into a contestable fund over
five years to increase the provision of Asian
languages in schools. We will also continue
to promote leadership amongst our ethnic
community, and particularly among ethnic
women.

LABOUR PARTY
1. Name that one policy of your party that
will swing the elections in your favour?
Under Labour, childrens education will be
enhanced by smaller class sizes. Children
and retired people will get free doctors visits
and prescriptions. Labour will give real help
to those wanting to buy their own homes.
We will lift wages and help children out of
poverty and make New Zealand a fairer and
more prosperous place for all.
2. The Herald DigiPoll shows that New
Zealanders feel an increased fear of
unavailability of employment as well as

KEEP THE TEAM

THATS WORKING
National is building a stronger economy which means more jobs and opportunities.
Nationals plan will deliver higher incomes, quality teaching and higher achievement in
schools, shorter hospital waiting times and safer communities.

Labour will upgrhade the Office of Ethnic

NEW ZEALAND FIRST

1. Name that one policy of your party that
will swing the elections in your favour?
New Zealand First will introduce strict and
effective regulation over foreign ownership
of New Zealand land, housing and businesses
to ensure that New Zealand national interests
and those of New Zealanders are paramount,
because we want to use our national
resources and our peoples abilities to work
towards full employment and rapidly grow
our national wealth.
2. The Herald DigiPoll shows that New
Zealanders feel an increased fear of
unavailability of employment as well as
getting burgled. What does your party
intend to do to assure people of safety and
security? What do you have to offer to the
migrant community?
New Zealand Firsts policy is to seriously
reduce unemployment and improve the job
prospects and pay for all New Zealanders. NZ
First has always had a strong law and order
policy. Police have been under-resourced
under the National government, with a
frozen budget for five years and now a $40m
budget cut. We will pass new legislation to
crack down on the binge drinking culture.
3. What is your partys stand on:
a) Housing affordability, especially in
Auckland?
We will use a new state agency to create
a land bank that will supply affordable
sections, with finance for first home buyers
at low interest rates. New Zealand Firsts

immigration policy to only bring to

New Zealand people who have a job
will reduce pressure on demand for
housing particularly in Auckland and
Christchurch.
b) Improving education in the country?
We will close charter schools. We will
remove National Standards and we will
introduce a dollar for dollar student debt
write-off scheme for graduates who remain
and work in New Zealand. This will
encourage students to pay off their debt.
We also want to improve standards of rental
accommodation to benefit all of those who
are renting and students.
c) Better healthcare for all?
We will give free GP visits to all primary
school children and extend this to three free
visits per annum for SuperGold Cardholders.
These visits for seniors will actually save
money because if only one percent of
SuperGold Cardholders use the free visits
and are thereby saved from needing hospital
care, then we will save not cost money.
d) Capital gains tax?
NZ First is opposed to a capital gains tax
extension if there is not equally a concession
for capital losses.
e) Increase of retirement age to 67?
NZ First is opposed to raising the age of
entitlement from 65. NZ Super is affordable
at 4.1% net of GDP, which is half the cost
of some other countries. We will keep the
66 per cent rule, it will not be means tested
and we have further benefits coming with the
SuperGold Card.

c) Better healthcare for all?

The Greens will extend free doctors visits
to all people under the age of 18, as well as
talking a number of other such as placing
school nurses in low decile schools. The
Green Party believes in a holistic approach to
health that is focused on promoting positive
health and lifestyles. Where appropriate,
the Green Party would look into supporting
community health workers to target specific
population groups and communities to
achieve better health outcomes.
d) Capital gains tax?

which the previous generation of New

progressively write-off existing student loan
debt, and increase apprenticeships.

Adopt NZ as your home

NZ First candidate Mahesh Bindra has a
message for all diasporic communities

orn and brought up in Mumbai, India,

Mahesh Bindra, is ranked number
11 on NZ Firsts party list. Standing from Mt
Roskill constituency, Bindra is passionate about
protecting communities. Incidentally, Mt
Roskill is home to a large population of KiwiIndians. But Bindra emphasizes that Indians
are the same as any other New Zealander in the
country.
In fact, the NZ First candidate says, All
immigrants should consider NZ as their home
country and not use it as a stepping stone to go
to other countries and settle down there. For
example, Fijians coming to NZ to ultimately
settle in Australia. Or other communities, who
want to live in Australia, would come to NZ
to secure their residency, before moving on to
their ultimate destination. He explains, There

is a perception of NZ First being a party of old

and white people. But I am neither that old nor
white! Similarly, the projection of the political
party being anti-immigrant is also not a reality.
We are not against immigrants, but would like
to encourage skilled migrants who can contribute
towards the building of this nation, he says,
adding, Our laws apply to all New Zealanders,
irrespective of their race, religion, age, gender
or socio-economic status; whether they arrived
yesterday or 100 years ago.
With extensive experience in rehabilitation
and re-integration of offenders in society,
Bindras main concern is regarding law and
order and public safety of New Zealanders. If the
elections work in his favour, Bindra promises to
work on issues related to family violence, elder
care, basic to tertiary education, with a focus on
youth development through apprenticeship.
Bindra is a supporter of victims rights over
the right of the state or the offender. He believes
that tax payers money should not be used for
looking after victims. Rather the rehabilitation
programme should be strengthened to educate
prisoners with skills that will fetch them work
once they finish their term. This will help integrate
them back into the society.
With regard to womens issues, Bindra
commented that womens crime rates are
increasing at an alarming rate, mainly due to lack
of cultural awareness. Family values are eroding,
mostly because of broken families. Most young
offenders come from this background and this is
a social issue and not a criminal issue. With so
much to promise, Bindras chances of making it
to the new government look highly probable.

Sandringham Aucklands Little India

- Anuja Nadkarni

One of Sandringhams most popular vegetarian restaurants, Jai Jalaram Khaman, (Photo Credits - Anuja Nadkarni)

andringhams aromatic streets, vibrant spice

stalls and even its traffic cannot help but
remind you of India. Whether it is South Hall
in London or Queens in New York, many of the
worlds culturally diverse cities have labeled
certain areas as their Little India.
Auckland, although a modest city when
compared to the worlds truly big metropolises,
is widely recognised for its multiculturalism
as well as its large Indian population. It is no
surprise therefore, that New Zealands biggest
city has caught up with New York, London and
Melbourne with its very own little India. While
this may not be what New Zealand is known for
globally, and while it is mainly a local appellation,
Sandringham does still hold several attributes that
deem it fair to be a Little India destination.
Inspired by food tours in Queens, the suburbs

reputation encouraged Sandringham Community

Centre programme coordinator Anita Totha to
start her very own version. The objective of the
tours and cooking classes is to educate people
about the various Indian foods and spices and
how to use the ingredients they see on the tour to
prepare an authentic Indian meal for their family.
It is quite symbolic to have this little
population of Little India here because Auckland,
in terms of ethnicities and diversities, is huge,
Ms Totha said.
According to Statistics New Zealands census
report, between 2006 and 2013 the Indian ethnic
group in this country grew by 48.4 per cent.
Sandringhams central location makes it an
accessible destination for customers as well as a
desirable location for retailers.

travels to Sandringham several times a week to

shop for both her weekly and Indian groceries.
Sandringham is an amazing location. Everything
is there, groceries, restaurants, Indian movies
its a one stop-shop, Ms Kankad said.
Similarly Gaurang Ambani, owner of
Mumbai Chaat, opened his second restaurant in
Sandringham to cater to the growing popularity
of his eatery. With Sandringham being the more
central hub for Indian people to come and shop,
we figured that we would be opening ourselves
up to a larger market, if we moved here. And we
were successful.
With events such as the Food and Spice
tour promoting the suburb as an Indian hub, Mr
Ambani said Sandringham is busier now than it
was just two years ago.
I see a greater mix of people coming to

Sandringham not just Indians. People see value

for money and travel from wherever just to come,
shop and eat at Sandringham, Mr Ambani said.
When asked what he thought about
Sandringham as a Little India, Mr Ambani said
the community unofficially wears the title and
this reputation is not something he sees will be
changing anytime soon.
With several Indian grocery stores and
restaurants, Sandringham has almost provided
a portal for people to enjoy, explore, learn and
discover. The community has woven together
the South Asian culture with that of Auckland
remarkably well. The next time youre feeling
homesick, nostalgic or just free on a Sunday, you
know where to go!

Outsourcing out, Collaboration in

Kiwi companies have been called to scale-up

in collaboration with the services of Indian ICT
companies.
That was the mantra that a visiting Indian
delegation of IT companies from India shared
with local businesses.
Hrishikesh Nair (Rishi), CEO of Infopark -G
Tech and the representative from the Government
of India, emphasised on the fact that the way
things work in IT sector are now changing.
Its more about collaboration and not about
outsourcing these days.
INZBC hosted a delegation of around 15
companies in the ICT sector, led by the
State Government of Kerela, India in Auckland

and Wellington. The idea was to help the ICT

companies engage with the Kiwi businesses
where they can share their strength in technology
services, delivery, testing services, etc.
Rishi, heads the state governments initiative,
G Tech, which is a technology park in Kerela,
supporting the SMEs to talk to the world. He feels
that the New Zealand market is still growing in
this sphere and there is a lot to be achieved in
the years to come. The NZ companies have the
IP and good models, and the Indian companies
can provide the necessary support in skilled
technicians, etc. to scale up their operations on a
global scale, says Rishi.
A lot of Kiwi companies are still getting to

know how international collaborations work,

how multi-party MOUs take shape. Most of the
companies in this delegation have already opened
offices in US, UK, Europe, Middle East and are
now looking at Australia & NZ to expand.
He also highlighted that advantages of
working with the state of Kerela, as against other
states of India. Kerela has 100% literacy rate
and low attrition rates, as compared to other tier 1
cities in India, thus providing more cost efficiency
and stability.
Banu Jacob, the head of the delegation and
CEO of Experion Technologies India, said,
the New Zealand arm of the visit was very
successful, with many companies
showing interest in working with
the delegate companies. Calling
out to the Kiwi companies,
Banu says, If India is
your ICT destination, then
Kerela should be on top
of your list, as we have the
most educated and qualified
workforce. You will not
regret it! He also said that
the SME Kiwi companies can
take advantage of the reach that
some of the Indian companies now
have globally.
This was the first time that INZBC was
hosting a delegation from a state government
of India. INZBC is working closely with
government agencies and industry bodies, like:
Grow Wellington, ATEED, NZTE, etc. to bring
together selected companies for match-making, in

Auckland and Wellington, says Sunil Kaushal,

Chair of INZBC.
According to Sunil, the New Zealand market
has been very positive and people have made new
connections to work with. Another thing that
has come strongly is that Indian companies need
partners in New Zealand, to set-up shop, just as
the Kiwi companies need them, in India. So the
emphasis is on collaboration.
Sunil said, this delegation was a learning for
both sides, NZ companies have realised the
reach that Indian companies have globally and
Indian companies have found great technologies.
So there is a very good marriage of
innovation and global reach.
The delegation was first
hosted in Wellington,
by Grow Wellington
and Grant Thornton.
Grant
Thornton
were pleased to host
the ICT Delegations
from the state of
Kerala, India in
Wellington. We are
very excited about
the opportunities this
initiative will create for NZ
and Indian business, says Greg
Thompson, National Director, Tax and Jay
Changani, National India Business Relations at
Grant Thornton New Zealand.
The Auckland meeting was hosted by KPMG.

the Junior Grand Prix in Crouchevel, France.
Having started skating at a very young age this
young skater has mastered the art and is geared
up to share the stage with her fellow competitors.
Preeyas journey of skating started when she
was as young as 2yrs 10months. She began her
training at the Tiny Tots skate school. Speaking
to Preeyas mother, Bronwyn Laud, about her
choice of skating over other sports, Bronwyn said

Quay street Auckland

Preeyas decision to learn skating came about

when her brother, Vijay Laud and his friend,
decided to take up Ice hockey being fascinated by
the sign Learn and Play Ice Hockey. Wanting to
follow something similar to what her brother did,
Preeya decided on skating.
Preeya took her talent to the next level when
she started competing at various competitions in
2007, ever since then she has won many titles
in skating. Preeya has also won and has been
placed many a times at the New Zealand National
championship.

Junior Grand Prix in Crouchevel France is the

icing on the cake in Preeyas skating expedition.
Being focused towards the same Preeya has been
preparing since January which also included a
months training and competing at various levels
of competition in Australia.
Preeya, who is the only competitor from New
Zealand, is very thrilled to be a part of this grand
competition. Expressing her excitement she adds,
Im very proud to represent New Zealand at this
event. It is a great privilege to share the stage and
compete against skaters who have achieved at the
world stage.
I have been with Preeya throughout her
skating journey. I have seen her struggle to learn
to do the jumps and spins required to achieve at
this level. Even though I am very proud when
she wins a competition, I am most proud of her
when she gets up after falling many times while
learning knew elements to her routines. She
works very hard to ensure that she will do NZ
proud at the Junior Grand Prix in Crouchevel,
adds Bonwyn Laud, telling us about Preeya and
her achievements.
Preeya who has a very loving and helpful
nature coaches skating at the Paradice Ice Arena
at Avondale and attends the New Zealand

about this competition, Preeya is all set to make

Unitary Plan
hearings begin

Auckland Council
Group finances go
from strength
to strength

t has been another year of good financial

performance for the Auckland Council
Group which reported its unaudited preliminary
financial results to the NZX today.
During the year the groups credit ratings were
reaffirmed by both Standard & Poors and
Moodys and the group has achieved results
better than budget. This provides a strong base for
planning the next ten years.
The group is reporting an operating surplus of
$150 million compared to a $38 million budgeted
deficit
Total borrowings are below budgeted levels
Savings targets were achieved and the
organisation has increased its expected annual
savings targets for future years
The group continues its transformation focused on
delivering services with better value for money.
This year the group invested $1.6 billion renewing
and expanding assets to its growing Auckland
communities. The capital programme delivered
local community facilities and parks, and local
and regional infrastructure and transport. This
work contributed to a boost in the value of the
groups total assets from $37 billion to $40 billion.
Aucklanders can have confidence that we are
continuing to invest in our city whilst delivering
the services they value, says Auckland Council
Chief Executive Stephen Town.
A copy of the results reported to NZX is available
on the councils website: www.aucklandcouncil.

he next milestone in developing Aucklands

first Unitary Plan is the beginning of the
hearings process that started on 2 September.
The Auckland Unitary Plan Independent Hearings
Panel began this week, the process of hearing
submissions on 74 topics. The first session of the
hearing programme was a pre-hearing meeting on
matters the Panel sees as outside its jurisdiction,
followed by the hearing for this topic on 25
September.
October sees the Panel embarking on the hearings
for the regional policy statement (RPS) matters in
the Proposed Auckland Unitary Plan.
The hearings begin with topics like the RPS that
set the strategic direction for the site specific
matters that will be heard later in the schedule.
The
eight
member Panel,
under
chair
Judge David
Kirkpatrick,
will consider
the views of
around 9500
submitters and a further 3500 submitters who
have responded to the original submissions.
The Proposed Auckland Unitary Plan sets the
rules about how the Auckland region will develop
over decades, including what can be built and
where and how to protect the environment and
Aucklands built and cultural heritage.
The Panel must report back to Auckland Council
by July 2016 any changes it thinks should be
made to the plan. Council has until 30 September
to consider the Panels recommendations and to
publish an Auckland Unitary Plan.
Details of the hearing topics and the schedule until
February 2015 can be found at: www.aupihp.

Mayor proposes
$16.6bn of investment
for Auckland

uckland Mayor Len Brown presented his

proposal for Aucklands next ten-year
budget - the Long-term Plan (LTP) 2015-2025.
The Mayors proposal sets out priorities for
investment over the next decade to support
Aucklands development, while keeping rates and
debt at affordable levels.
This proposal delivers more investment than
Auckland has seen in any previous decade, while
keeping rates fairer and more affordable for all
Aucklanders, says Len Brown.
I am proposing $16.6 billion in investment for
local and regional projects over the next 10 years,
while reducing projected debt levels by $2.7
billion and capping average rates rises to between
2.5 and 3.5 per
cent.
The proposal
is a departure
from
the
previous 201222 LTP, which
requires average rates increases of 4.9 per cent a
year to fund all of its commitments.
Len Brown says that while the capital investment
will be lower than under the previous LTP, it will
be fully aligned to Aucklands growth priorities,
while protecting many core services. The Mayor
also reaffirmed his commitment that no swimming
pool or library will be closed.
The Mayor said that additional funding would be
needed to deliver Aucklands transport priorities
and that options were being developed for
consultation later this year.
The award winners will be announced at a
ceremony in Nelson on Wednesday, October
29 as part of the 2 Walk and Cycle 2014
2WALKandCYCLE2014 conference.

ommunity programme staff and students

are disgusted by the theft of 920 native
plants grown by Orewa College students as part
of their Trees for Survival Trust programme.
The plants were to be planted by the students on
Monday to help improve the stream water quality
and stabilise land at a local farm.
The theft occurred at West Coast Road, Ahuroa
where the plants were being kept in a paddock by
the roadside until the planting day.
The plants were 40-50cm high and stored in milk
crates.
This is such a thoughtless and ignorant act,
says Gael Ogilvie, manager of Auckland Council
Environmental Services. Its the exact opposite
of the kind of behaviour that the students showed
by growing these plants for a good cause.
Trees for Survival is an environmental education
programme supported by Auckland Council. It
involves young people growing and planting
native trees to help landowners revegetate
erosion-prone land, improve stream flow and
water quality, and increase biodiversity.
The programme also creates community
partnerships by engaging schools, their
community, local businesses and councils,
working together to restore our natural heritage.
Currently there are over 5,000 school students
involved in the programme with more than 70,000
trees planted each year. In the past 20 years, the
trust has planted more than a million trees

Helping first home buyers

Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi
National MP

ational values home ownership.

Thats because it provides stability
for families, strength for communities, and
security in retirement.
So its important for young people to get
their foot on the ladder, and into their first
home.
Weve been tackling this issue head on. For
a start, one of the best ways the Government

can support more New Zealanders into home

ownership is by helping to keep interest rates
lower for longer. Were doing that by carefully controlling our spending and sticking
with sensible economic policy.
We are also working to increase the amount
of land available for new houses, and to get
those houses built. Were setting up housing accords with local councils to free up
more land. Were reducing building material
costs, reining in infrastructure and compliance costs, and investing in sector skills and
productivity.
If re-elected a new National Government
will double government support for first
home buyers, and over the next five years

well help 90,000 New Zealanders into their

first home.
Our HomeStart policy is the most significant
Government support for first home buyers in
more than a generation.
Whats more, weve carefully designed our
policy to get more new homes built in an affordable price range just like they used to
be.
There are three sets of changes were going
to make.
Firstly, the new KiwiSaver HomeStart Grant
will double the support for people who are
buying or building a brand new home.
Secondly, first home buyers will now be allowed to withdraw the Governments annual

contribution to their KiwiSaver account the

member tax credit of up to $521 a year as
well as their own, and their employers, contributions.
Finally, Welcome Home Loan house price
limits will be aligned with the new KiwiSaver HomeStart Grant meaning home buyers
need only a 10 per cent deposit to get a government-guaranteed loan.
Our changes will ensure more New Zealanders are able to attain the dream of owning
their own home.

To address teacher quality, we have committed

$25 million to extra training for teachers, and
will raise the standard of entry to teacher training
programmes.
While some things in education never change,
others change so fast its a challenge for schools
to keep up.
A Labour Government will make sure all
students in Years 5-13 have access to a portable
computer in the classroom and at home.
There are a number of other announcements
designed to lift student achievement. We will
rebuild worn-out buildings so that by 2030 every
classroom is a modern learning environment, fit
for the 21st Century.
We will give schools the opportunity to
end the voluntary donations which divide
school communities, and we will scrap national

standards, allowing teachers to focus back on the

full breadth of New Zealands internationallyacclaimed curriculum.
We will repeal charter school legislation and
no more charter schools will be created under
Labour.
New Zealand has a world-class education
system -- one that many countries envy. Rather
than aping other countries programmes that
achieve lower results to us, we need to be
confident about what we do, work on where we
can improve and celebrate our success.
After all, if we were an Olympic team coming
in the top ten of an event, why would we take on
the coaching techniques of athletes coming 20th?
I think thats what my Dad would say. And he
was a great champion of New Zealands worldclass education system.

Why Education Matters

David Shearer
Labour MP

y Dad was a school principal. Around

the dinner table wed hear about the
highs and lows of the job. In turn, I started life
as a teacher, even married a teacher, and have
maintained a keen interest in education.
Ive noticed the basics never change. For
example, small classes are every parents dream
for their children. They feel that the more time
teachers have to devote to their children and
improve their teaching practise, the better. Thats
always been the case. In fact even John Key
believes that. He cited smaller class sizes as one

of the reasons he sent his kids to a private school.

Another constant is teacher quality. Its
the most important thing. A highly-trained,
enthusiastic and professional teacher in front of
the class is pure gold for student achievement.
Conversely, if a teacher isnt up to scratch then the
best resources in the world wont help.
I remember my Dad talking enthusiastically
about the new teachers he was getting each year
and some of the others he hoped to move on.
With class size and teacher quality in mind,
Labour recently announced its new education
policy. To address class sizes, we have decided to
put 2,000 more teachers in schools by 2018 and
reduce primary school Years 4 to 8 ratios from one
teacher per 29 students to one per 26. In secondary
schools we will reduce maximum average class
sizes of one teacher to 26 students to one to 23.

National Stumble On housing Crisis

Winston Peters
NZFirst leader

oth Prime Minister John Key and Housing

Minister Nick Smith keep saying there is
no housing crisis yet all of Auckland, and the
rest of New Zealand, knows there is one.
Tens of thousands of homes have been bought
by offshore buyers in Auckland and there are
crowds at the house auctions. This is a crisis as
prices spiral out of rest of Kiwis.
And housing mortgage interest rates keep
going up with four increases in the floating rate
already this year.
Meanwhile the Reserve Bank is clamping
down on first home buyers by forcing up the size
of deposits.

New Zealand First will bring in a state agency

land bank to get ahead of housing demand,
releasing sections when needed at reasonable
prices.
Foreigners should not be land banking, and
speculating on New Zealand property.
Here is an example of actual foreign buying
land banking in New Zealand, and its an
Auckland case.
This is a lifestyle subdivision on the outskirts
of Auckland, 22 lots all pre-sold to Asian buyers
and more in the pipeline.
Kiwi buyers did not even get to see the land
promoted, the other very Asian aspect of this
development is that every single lot sold for
exactly $500,000.
When do you ever see all the lots in a
subdivision going for the same price?
That does not happen and suggests that the
IRD should be having a good look at whats
happening here.
What it points to is the possibility of money-

laundering, GST avoidance, and cash top ups.

Already around the outskirts of Auckland
there has been, according to developers who
have contacted us, huge land banking by foreign
buyers, just waiting for housing demand to come
to them.
One of the major drivers behind the wave of
foreign takeovers is the very favourable treatment
overseas ownership confers.
Foreign owners have tax advantages not
available to New Zealand buyers.
And tax is not covered by the Overseas
Investment Office.
The interest rates they pay are a fraction of
those charged in New Zealand.
No wonder foreign buyers enjoying
low interest rates in their own country are
flocking to buy in New Zealand by paying
no or minimal tax, they cannot lose and we
cannot win.

Quiz your mind!

From the desk of I am Woman

In pursuit of happiness
Eight simple ways to be happier today

lthough the pursuit of happiness can be

an endless journey and its easy to think
of happiness as the destination but in reality,
its essence lies in the journey itself and often
happiness is the driver. For example, it has been
proven that happy people are more productive.
If you thought achieving a state of happiness was
rather difficult, here are some simple practices to
happify your lives 1.Move your body: 5 Minutes Could Be Enough
Even if you thought exercise was something you
had no time for check out the many five minute
workouts on the internet or simply go for a walk
with a friend.Exercise can help you relax, increase
your brain power, and even improve your body
image, even if you dont lose any weight. It has a
profound effect on your overall wellbeing.
2.Sleep More:Studies show that by sleeping
enough youll be less sensitive to negative
emotions and stress. We know that sleep helps our
body recover and heal itself, it also helps us focus
and be more productive. It turns out that sleep is
also important for happiness.
Negative stimuli get processed by the amygdala;
positive or neutral memories gets processed
by the hippocampus. Sleep deprivation hits the
hippocampus harder than the amygdala. The
result is that sleep-deprived people fail to recall
pleasant memories yet recall gloomy memories
just fine.

3.Spend Time With Your Loved Ones - Money

friends and family is one of the top ten regrets of

the dying. If you want more evidence that time
with friends is beneficial for you, research proves
it can make you happier right now, too. Science
has proven that even looking at pictures of
people or pets that you love can make an instant
difference to your mood.
Time spent with friends is highly valuable when
it comes to improving our happiness, even
for introverts. Several studies have found that
time spent with friends and family makes a big
difference to how happy we feel.
4.Spend time in nature :Science shows that
making time to go outside on a nice day delivers
huge advantage; one study found that spending 20
minutes outside in good weather not only boosted
positive mood, but broadened thinking and
improved working memory.Twenty minutes is a
short enough time to spend outside that you could
fit it into your commute or even your lunch break.

when we back it up with positive thoughts.

7.Meditate: Rewire Your Brain for Happiness.
Meditation is being considered an important habit
for improving focus, clarity, and attention span, as
well as helping to keep you calm. It turns out its
also useful for increasing happiness.
Meditation literally clears your mind and calms
you down, its been often proven to be the single
most effective way to live a happier and a longer
life. Studies show that right after meditating, we
experience feelings of calm and contentment, as
well as heightened awareness and empathy. And,
research even shows that regular meditation can
permanently rewire the brain to raise levels of
happiness.

5.Random acts of kindness : 100 Hours a

Year is the Magic Number. One of the most
counterintuitive pieces of advice I found is that
to make yourself feel happier, you should help
others. In fact, 100 hours per year (or two hours
per week) is the optimal time we should dedicate
to helping others in order to enrich our lives.

8.Practice Gratitude: Increase Happiness and

Satisfaction. This is a seemingly simple strategy
but Ive personally found it to make a huge
difference to my outlook. There are lots of ways
to practice gratitude, from keeping a journal of
things youre grateful for, sharing four good
things that happen each day with a friend or
your partner, and going out of your way to show
gratitude when others help you.
Simply being grateful for who or what you have
and not succumbing to complaint can be the
biggest contributor to your levels of happiness.

6.Smile: It Improves Your Face Value. Research

shows that smiling reduces pain, improves
mood and helps you think better.Smiling can
make us feel better, but its more effective

FRANK BAINIMARAMA

RO TEIMUMU KEPA

MAHENDRA CHAUDHRY

A defining election for Fiji

Arvind Kumar

iji heads to the polls in an historic election

in less than two weeks for the first
time in eight years since Commodore Frank
Bainimarama overthrew the elected government
of Laisenia Qarase and imposed military rule.
And the fight for power is shaping up into a battle
between Bainimarama - whose FijiFirst Party is
selling itself as the one to provide racial equality
in the country between the Indians and the
indigenous Fijians - and SODELPA, the former
SDL.
While other prominent Fiji political parties like
National Federation Party and Fiji Labour Party,
are contesting the election as well under a new
constitution initiated by Bainimarama, the main
fight is the one brewing between FijiFirst and
SODELPA, which stands for Social Democratic
Liberal Party. SODELPA was formed last year
following the disestablishment of Qarases SDL
party.
Backed by the military, Bainimarama has ruled for
the past eight years by decree, silencing the media
and anyone or any organization that appeared to
be a threat to his interim regime.
Although his declaration of the term Fijian for
everyone in the country and the success of many
village projects has appealed to many, turbulent
undercurrents remain below the surface.
A key sticking point is the disbanding of the
Great Council of Chiefs by Bainimarama a few
years ago. He believes the chiefly authority is
strengthened by removal of the traditional ruling
body from mainstream politics.
None of the Bainimarama Governments
decisions are meant to damage the mana and
authority of our chiefs, says Bainimarama.
On the contrary, their authority is strengthened
by removing them from the political process.
While individual chiefs are free to stand for
Parliament, the chiefs as a whole are now above
politics. They can concentrate on their ceremonial
duties and their traditional roles of looking after
the interests of their people.
They need to maintain the trust of the people
because of their leadership qualities and by setting
an example to everyone with the highest standards
of personal conduct. And while they do that, they
will have a treasured place in the vanua and in the
nation as a whole.
In Auckland recently, Bainimarama opened his
campaign by highlighting the fact that the new
constitution allowed racial equality and at the
same time safeguarded native land.
This constitution takes Fiji away from the dark
days of 2000, Mr Bainimarama said, referring
to George Speights overthrow of the Mahendra
Chaudhry government.
This constitution is dear to my heart and I am
happy that the people of Fiji have endorsed it.
Bainimarama said the new constitution had been
hailed as a fair and just document by many
countries.
The previous constitution allowed the sale of

native land; it is now refined and secure than

ever, Bainimarama said.
Like any previous constitution, it upholds the
legal and moral basis of a common and equal
citizenry without denying anyones individuality
or culture.
For the first time, ordinary people now enjoy
guarantees of free education, adequate housing
and health care, social security, clean water and
protection of the environment, Mr Bainimarama
said.
This constitution establishes common citizenry.
All citizens of Fiji are now called Fijians.
THE KEY PLAYERS SODELPA:
Headed by high chief Ro Teimumu Kepa,
SODELPA is mainly seen as a re-grouping of
chiefs who are out to regain their mana following
Bainimaramas disbanding of the Great Council
of Chiefs.
Ro Teimumu made no bones about the fact that her
party, when it came into power, would reinstate
the 1997 constitution and drag Bainimarama to
court to face treason charges.
Says Ro Teimumu: It is my honour to invite
the people of Fiji to join hands with us for a
mighty mission and a sacred cause. This is about
protecting and saving this precious land from a
dictatorship which is remaking it to conform to
their demands, their laws and their beliefs. We are
called at this moment in our history to protect our
ways of life, our cultures and traditions.
We must place Fijis destiny again with the
people. We will do this not just for ourselves but
for our children and the generations which follow
them. We will do it for work, food and freedom,
and for truth, justice and peace.
The vision we offer is of a radiant future of
prosperity and togetherness in the richness of
our diversity. It will be built on the values of
democracy; the rule of law; fair play and equality.
We stand as well for respect and compassion
and loving our neighbour. SODELPA rejects
absolutely the notion that solutions to a nations
challenges can be reached through acts of violence
and illegality.
Nearly eight years of iron-fisted military rule
has left many wounds on our islands. These have
been inflicted on the economy, on our society, on
families and young people. We have been robbed
of justice and of our freedoms and rights; citizens
were persecuted and tormented and physically
abused. In at least three instances victims were
mistreated so badly they died.
NATIONAL FEDERATION PARTY
Formed by Fijis founding fathers like AD Patel
and Siddiq Koya, Fijis oldest political party has
seen a resurgence this year after struggling at the
past two elections.
It is currently headed by academic Professor
Biman Prasad, and Tupou Draunidalo, the partys
first ever indigenous Fijian president. However,
Draunidalo is not the first Fijian to be part of the
party.
Adi Tupou herself is no stranger to Fiji politics
and comes from a family closely associated
with the countrys leadership. Her father is

former Colonel Savenaca Draunidalo, minister

in the SDL government, and mother is Adi Kuini
Vuikaba, former deputy Prime Minister and
Labour stalwart.
First iTaukei president she maybe Adi Tupou is not
the first Fijian to be involved with the 50-year-old
NFP. NFP had broad representation in parliament
of members of both houses of Parliament from the
indigenous community. They include Apisai Tora,
Isikeli Nadalo, Atunaisa Maitoga, Ratu Glaniville
Lalabalavu, Ratu Mosese Tuisawau, Ro Asela
Logavatu, Timoci Naco, Sakeo Tuiwainikai,
Ratu Jullian Toganivalu, Koresi Matatolu, Ratu
Osea Gavidi, Ratu Napolioni Dawai II, Ratu
Soso Katonivere, Filimone Nalatu and Temo
Sukanaivalu.
The NFP is the party with the longest record
of service to Fiji in this election and we proudly
celebrated our 50th anniversary last year, party
leader Biman Prasad said.
We were born before Fiji became Independent
and we have been part of the journey of
modernizing Fiji since then. During this time,
the NFP has always been the champion of
principled policies and change for the betterment
of all.
Today, the NFP is ready to take the challenges
facing our country now and beyond. We are ready
to meet the new economic, political, social and
environmental challenges and ensure that any
change that we propose is in the best interest of
the people of Fiji.
The NFP has always believed that change for the
good is possible and that it can be brought about
through consultation, dialogue, negotiation and
where necessary, compromise. Fiji does not stand
still and neither does the NFP.
We will endure, but move beyond stale political
arguments to provide opportunities for all citizens
to realize their fullest potential and achieve
their dreams of peace and prosperity. Fijis own
journey towards robust democracy and prosperity
has not been easy. Our nation has made mistakes
and stumbled along the way. During these
arduous times, the NFP has remained bound by
its principles and stood firmly on the right side of
history with a long-term inter-generational view
of change.
We will continue to honour these principles and
do what is best for the nation within fundamental
parameters such as the rule of law, participatory
democracy, social justice and principles of good
governance, while promoting justice, fairness and
equality under the law for every citizen.
The NFP believes the people of Fiji will
make informed decisions about whom they
entrust with the safeguarding of their interests.
This responsibility does not end on 17 September
2014.
We have no doubt whatsoever that post-election,
you will stand alongside us to collectively move
the wheels of progress to create, build, innovate
and expand the possibilities for the growth and
development of our nation.
At the same time the NFP requires each one of
you to hold us to account for our promises and
to participate effectively within the parliamentary
processes so that we can continue to shape the

future of Fiji together. We do not work for a

society divided into the elite and the poor we
will take you all with us to a better future.
FIJI LABOUR PARTY
Once a formidable force on the Fiji political
scene, the Labour Party appears to be a shadow
of its former self with leader Mahendra Chaudhry,
the countrys only Indian Prime Minister before
the 2000 coup, not eligible to contest the election.
Chaudhry, now 72, also served as Bainimaramas
Finance Minister for a while before having a
fallout, later being convicted for breaching the
Exchange Control Act.
Fiji today faces its biggest challenge as a nation,
states Chaudhry, the former trade unionist who is
now a fierce anti-Bainimarama critic.
Seven years of repressive authoritarian military
rule has been a disaster for Fiji.
Our civil and political rights have been severely
curtailed, the media is not free and critics of the
regime have been persecuted, assaulted and
intimidated. Several draconian decrees which
severely restrict human and trade union rights are
rigidly enforced.
Life is a constant struggle for almost half our
population who are now living in poverty made
worse by high unemployment and rising cost of
living. The regimes constitution is an imposition.
It is undemocratic, has no input from the people
and is deeply flawed in several respects: the
authority, independence and jurisdiction of the
judiciary remains circumscribed.
Power is concentrated in the hands of the Prime
Minister and the Attorney General, and draconian
decrees promulgated since 2009 remain in force,
overriding the fundamental rights guaranteed in
the constitution.
Electoral arrangements are questionable
free and fair elections cannot be held under the
proposed system. The constitution has clearly
been crafted to consolidate the regimes hold on
power and perpetuate its rule.
Above all, there is a total lack of accountability
and transparency in governments dealings. Its
accounts and the Auditor Generals reports have
not been published for the past seven years.
Despite repeated calls, the Prime Minister and
Attorney General have refused to disclose their
salaries, reported to be in excess of $1 million
each annually.
You must see through the regimes political
machinations, rhetoric and vote buying tactics, to
its devious agenda and the mess it has made of
our nation.
OTHERS
Minor parties like Peoples Democratic Party,
One Fiji and United Freedom are not expected to
make any significant impact in the bigger scheme
of things, but could cost the bigger parties crucial
some crucial votes.

Apartments popular choice for home owners

and investors
SugarTree is a freehold apartment
development in the CBD/Freemans Bay that
focuses on the essential ingredients that are
required to create a community; spacious
and luxuriously designed apartments mixed
with landscaped gardens and retail, allowing
residents to live work, socialize and entertain,
whilst staying in touch with nature.
Stage 1, Prima, currently under construction
has sold out and Stage 2, Centro has one, two

from $315,000 for a one bedroom - $921,000
for a 3 bedroom with study. Centros top
levels are complimented with 8 luxurious
penthouses (some sprawling over two levels)
with stunning 270 degree city views.
These range from $1.2 - $2.5m. Altro,
the final stage, plans to be completed end
of 2017. SugarTree residents will have
exclusive access to a bar/caf roof top garden
with spectacular harbour and city views.
Kalmar is the construction company building
Prima and will also be building Centro which
starts in November this year. With resource
consent granted and over 40% sold this
project is on track for completion mid to
late 2016. Purchasers only need to pay 10%
deposit and the balance on completion so it is
a great way to take advantage of capital gains

by buying at todays prices.

The median price of Central Auckland
Apartments has increased 30% over the
last year and 77% over the last 2 years,
performing at far better rates than many
suburban areas. (REINZ).
Traditional housing close to the city centre
is now out of the reach of many first home
buyers, so an apartment community such as
this is an exciting and viable alternative,
Darren Brown (Project Director). Sugartree
is equally appealing to young couples as
it is to those who have children who have
left home and they no longer wish to spend
their weekends maintaining a large family
home and want to leave the hard work of the
quarter-acre behind them, preferring the lock
up and leave lifestyle city apartment living
offers.
SugarTree is conveniently located just 5
minutes walk from Ponsonby Road, Western
Park and Victoria Park Market and the
proposed Pitt Street Station of the proposed
City Rail Link. The viaduct and CBD are just
a 10 minute walk.

INDIA/INDIA ABROAD

Japan promises an investment of US $35

billion in India over the next five years
10-POINT INDOJAPANESE
PARTNERSHIP

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi shakes hands with Japanese Prime Minister
Shinzo Abe during a signing ceremony to establish sister city ties between
Kyoto and Varanasi in Kyoto, Japan.

In what could worry China, India and Japan

pledged to develop closer and strategic
partnership, as Prime Minister Narendra
Modi declared on the path-breaking visit that
relations with Tokyo were the highest priority
for my government.
India and Japan also decided to speed up the
negotiations over civil nuclear cooperation,
and work on an agreement to collaborate on
military technologies. We have taken an
important decision to elevate (our) relationship
from Strategic and Global Partnership to a
Special Strategic and Global Partnership,
Modi said in the company of his Japanese
counterpart Shinzo Abe after their summit
meeting.
This is not just a play of words but a decision
that reflects the solemn responsibilities of
our two governments and two countries,
Modi added. Abe agreed,We have to
fundamentally improve our ties in every
field to elevate our relationship into a special
strategic partnership. Abe said he had fruitful
exchange of ideas with Modi, that the two
countries had agreed to enhance cooperation
in maritime security, and that security
cooperation between India and Japan will
deepen further.
Modi welcomed Japans commitment to invest
$35 billion in India over the next five years,
and hailed Tokyos decision to end sanctions
on Indian entities. No country has done
more for modernizing Indias infrastructure
than Japan, said Modi, who picked Japan for

his first bilateral visit outside the Indian subcontinent after becoming prime minister in
May.
The two countries signed a partnership
agreement to turn the Hindu holy city
of Varanasi, which forms part of Modis
parliamentary constituency, into a smart
heritage city. He later tweeted: It was
gladdening to witness the signing of MoU
between Varanasi and Kyoto. Its yet
another instance of furthering India-Japan
cooperation. Japan agreed to extend technical
and financial support to the proposed bullet
train project in India.
A 3,300-word Tokyo Declaration summed
up the new warmth in India-Japan ties, with
references to their convergent global interests,
a new era of cooperation in military equipment
and technology, shared interests in the security
of maritime and cyber domains, as well as
closer and stronger strategic partnership.
Modi said Japan was among Indias closest
and most reliable partners. He promised
a fast-track channel for Japanese investors.
We have to fundamentally improve our ties
in every field to elevate our relationship into a
special strategic partnership.
Modi said Japan will play an increasingly
important role in Indias economic
transformation. The Indian prime minister
also said that the two countries intended to
give a new thrust to their defence cooperation
given our shared interest in peace and
stability and maritime security.

1. Japan to give 3.5 trillion yen (over

US $33.58 billion) to India over
five years to finance projects
sincluding infrastructure and building of
smart cities
2. Setting up of a Special Management
Team under PMO to facilitate business
from Japan
3. Inking of a partnership agreement
between Varanasi, one of the oldest
continuously inhabited cities in the world,
and Kyoto, which was the capital
of Japan for over 1,000 years
and a confluence of heritage and
modernity
4. Japan expresses readiness to provide
financial, technical and operational
support to introduce bullet trains in
India
5. Modi and Abe direct officials to
accelerate negotiations on a civil nuclear
deal. The deal which will facilitate supply
of Japans nuclear technology to India
6. Strengthening defence ties and
accelerating discussions that will facilitate
sale of US-2 amphibian aircraft to India
by Japan
7. India set to ink an agreement for supply
of rare earth metals, key elements in
defence industry components and modern
technology, to Japan
8. Japans cooperation to fight the deadly
sickle cell anemia commonly found among
tribals in India
9. Proposal to formalize a two plus two
format for dialogue bringing together the
foreign and defence ministers of both
countries.
10. Modi underlines the need for closer
and deeper cooperation between Japan and
India to champion the cause of
global vikasvaad (development)
instead of vistarvaad (expansionism).

It is estimated that 90 percent of the Malayalee

Despite the Kerala economy being propped up

6.2 times what the state gets from the centre as

it can meet 60 percent of the states public debt.

Modi launches Jan Dhan

Yojana, record 15 mn bank
accounts opened

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi last

week launched the union governments flagship
financial inclusion scheme Pradhan Mantri
Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), with the national
rollout leading to the opening of an astounding
15 million bank accounts on a single day.
Modi said the project, launched in a mission
mode, aims at tackling poverty by ending
financial untouchability.
Under the project announced by Modi during
his Independence Day address, bank accounts
and debit cards with an accident insurance
cover of Rs.1 lakh will be provided to millions
still without access to formal banking facilities.
With the government having done extensive
homework for the projects rollout, Modi took
pride in the numbers that exceeded the target.

community reception for Prime Minister
Narendra Modi in the US in September,
according to a media report.
The website, pmvisit.org, will ensure the

analysis website Niti Central reported. According
to the IACF, more than 300 Indian American
organisations have come together to organise the
reception. It will be held at the Madison Square
Garden in Manhattan, New York. Interested
community organisations have been requested to
mobilise people to attend the function. Volunteers
have been invited to help out.

Kerala to create a directory on its diaspora

Kerala will soon get a directory to enable it
connect better with its two million-strong diaspora
that annually remits home a staggering Rs.75,000
crore ($12 billion). Its probably the first-such
exercise in the country.
The need for such a directory has been on the
cards for long but with the recent evacuation of
Kerala nurses from Iraq and Libya carried out by
the combined action of the state and the Centre
has come as a blessing in disguise for going ahead
with the diaspora directory, because none knows
how many Keralites are there in each country,
P.Sudeep, CEO of Roots-Norka, the Kerala
government agency that looks after the welfare
of the states diaspora, told IANS in an interview.
All the arrangements are in place for starting the

wherever people from our state work. People

can either register online or if people do not have
access to computers can do it from the office of
the Kerala organisations. It would have only basic
information and nothing in detail would be asked.
This is just a statistical exercise for knowing the
number of people from Kerala in every country,
Sudeep said.
The officials are now planning a grand
inauguration of the online registration and are
trying to rope in important people who will
simultaneously register from various countries.
The Onam season (September) is round the
corner and if everything falls in place, the
inauguration is likely to take place at that time,
Sudeep added.

Cowboys and East Indians.
McConigley, lecturer at the Department of
English of University of Wyoming, is one
of the two winners. The other is Ruth Ellen

press release issued by the university said.
Other people on the short-list have been
nominated for the Booker Prize and won

honestly did not think I would win.
Just making the short-list and long-list
seemed pretty great, McConigley said in the
statement.Winners will be honoured at the

The prize comprises $5,000 to each author.

Attenboroughs Gandhi changed lives of all of us

By Subhash K. Jha

m Puri, who had a miniscule role in British filmmaker Richard Attenboroughs

Oscar winning film Gandhi, says the film changed the life of everyone who has
been associated with it.
Richard Attenboroughs Gandhi changed the lives of all those who were associated with
the film. Most of all, it changed Ben Kingsleys life. Thereafter each time Gandhis picture
flashed across our mind, we saw Bens face along with Gandhiji, said Puri.
I had barely one-and-a-half-minute screen-time in Gandhi. But what an impact my
cameo made! I believe it was shown as the footage during the Oscar nominations, a huge
honour in a film that starred the most distinguished cast possible..., he added.
Oscar winning filmmaker Attenborough died Sunday. He was 90.
Puri says that his going away is sad, but then death is inevitable.
However the pain of his going away is diminished when we consider the fact that an
artiste and a visionary like Sir Richard has gone away after using his creative powers to
the maximum. Such people become a part of history and a source of inspiration for many
generations to come.
He was an accomplished actor and a filmmaker. With Gandhi he achieved the pinnacle
of success. With the film he changed Indias image abroad. A very large section of the
Western world did not know our values, culture and ethics, our struggles and triumphs as
a nation. Because Gandhi was such a success, it reached into the recesses of hearts all
over the world..., he said.
The actor, who has worked in several international films in lead roles, the recent one being
The Hundred Foot Journey, had just a cameo in Gandhi. Puri played a man who had
lost his son.
I played a cameo as Nahari. Sir Richard had seen me in Aakrosh and had decided
to give me the role of Nahari in Gandhi. I shot for just one night. I had screen time of
barely 90 seconds. But my scene came at a very important point in the narrative and it was
so well written. But it was a memorable night, he said.
The purpose of the multiple-Oscar winning film was to highlight the humanism of Gandhi.
Sir Richard made Gandhi with complete passion. He was not so much interested in the
politics of Mahatma Gandhi as he was in his humanism. The film focused on the nonviolence and the freedom struggle of the Mahatama. Sir Richard deliberately didnt feature
Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in the script. If he had been present, Gandhi wouldve
become a political film, which Sir Richard didnt want it to be.
Where do I place Sir Richard among my international directors? He was certainly among
the greats. No doubt about it. - IANS

Editorial

The only truth is in unity

omplement rather than compete, said Prabha Govindasamy, one of the directors at Giles Brooker Education, as I spoke to her with regard to the hugely successful collaborative project between New Zealand and India that earned a group
of 15 Kiwi students the Prime Ministers Scholarship for Asia, worth a whopping
sum of $86,000. (Turn to page 28 for details).
Ever since I heard these words, they have been resonating in my ears. Really,
what a novel approach to life - quite contrarian to our face-paced living style. In
fact, these words made me pause and ponder awhile. Yes, 45 students participated
in this educational project and only 15 were ultimately selected. But, it can still
be categorised as collaborative learning experience.
These 15 lucky students will have an opportunity to share notes and discuss the
outcomes before any decisive action is taken. That can be so reassuring. Team
work is about cooperation; it is about giving each member a chance to have a say.
It is these individual contributions that bring out the richness of a collective. In
the same vein, a political party is also a collective, comprised of representatives
of a specific demography.
Arent the poll pundits predicting that a coalition government will come to power
at the 2014 general election? If there is some truth in their prediction, NZ is truly
headed towards an inclusive governance system that would have representation
of a varied demography.
What would perhaps add value to their collective decision-making process is
the fact that every political party in recent times has ensured adequate ethnic
community representation. There are Kiwi-Indian candidates in every party list,
often at a reasonably higher rank which projects their possibility of becoming
members of Parliament. The dynamics of such collaboration promise interesting
unfolding of events, culminating in the announcement of our next Prime Minister
elect. However, the fact remains that inclusivity forms the guiding light of each
of these collectives. And we live in hope.

Letters to the ed

Dear editor,
I have been in New Zealand for one year now
and I have observed Indian Weekender as the
best community newspaper in Auckland. As
compared to other community newspapers I
have seen, Indian Weekender is much more
educational and has a good presentation. The
way your newspaper covers different festivals
and community events, make it more lively
and vibrant. There is a lot of stuff published
keeping in mind the community and migrants.

Indian players should have

20-20 vision of Test cricket
By Veturi Srivatsa

sk any player anywhere in the world and

he will say Test cricket is the ultimate.
But today - though he may not openly admit
it - he knows in his heart that his Twenty20
performance is far more important.
It may sound nonsensical yet the aspiring
cricketer has started believing that the easiest
way to get into the limelight is through the
shortest format of the game.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni and most of his
teammates may not accept that Twenty20
cricket has started hurting their Test status.
People will still hail Dhoni as the captain who
won the inaugural Twenty20 World Cup, the
2011 World Cup and the 2013 Champions
Trophy besides manipulating India to the No.1
position in Test cricket.
Indias Test players look like the youngsters
who got hooked on junk food, not knowing the
real taste of the spread of a festival feast. They
have mostly been brought up on Twenty20
stuff and they are struggling to come to grips
with the delicacies of Test cricket.
Any diplomatic explanation for Indias
abysmal performance will not serve the
purpose. We have to accept that this is their
strength now and it is not good enough to
consistently perform at least overseas. See the
disparity between tough sides and the weak.
England lost their first Test against India
on their last tour here and bounced back to
take the series 2-1 whereas India took a 1-0
lead and then disintegrated to allow England
to come back with a vengeance to make it a
no-contest winning 3-1.
There is a message for India in the
steamrolling, play your Test cricket mostly
on your cart-tracks back home and be happy
mauling the opposition. There was a time
when Sri Lanka used to be their favourite
whipping boys, arranging tours at short notice,
and now they found the West Indies.
How the Indian players wish they could
change their game as quickly as some of us,
the media, could in hindsight with 20-20
vision. How easy it is to roll out adjectives,

epithets and pour scorn at a team that shows

little stomach for a fight. Victory is always
historic and great and defeat is shameful.
Even if one has to show some sympathy,
how can the Indian think-tank explain Sri
Lanka beating England on the strength of their
spin just before India got there. India took two
spinners whose batting credentials may have
weighed in their favour and yet they didnt
play their best spinner.
Every time India visit England, Australia
and South Africa hopes are raised and if the
team doesnt measure up to expectations the
players are panned mercilessly, perhaps, in
some cases justifiably. Dont forget cricket is
a team game and cant be depending on one
or two batsmen to score runs and a couple of
bowlers to deliver.
On this tour you didnt have a Rahul Dravid
to give heart to the teammates like he tried to
do four years ago scoring three hundreds to
give some respectability to the totals. All that
we got to hear is the deficiencies in front-foot
and back-foot play with temperament thrown
in. Yes, you cant be experimenting with your
slip catchers in England. Again in Twenty20
you have no use for slip-catchers so how do
you find specialists in Tests. The sad truth is he
will score so heavily on India pitches he will
force his way back in. Someone should drill
into him that he should go in with uncluttered
mind and iron out technical glitches. That is if
the selectors still have time for him.
Likewise, someone should also find out
whats wrong with Mohammad Shami who
left the Indian shores as the leader of the
Indian attack and returning anything but that.
India made one point clear -- that they are
a side for the shorter versions. They did not
bat 50 overs in four innings and they were in
such a tearing hurry to catch up with Twenty20
Champions League that they played nine overs
more than 20 in their last Test innings.

100 Days of Seva

25

VOX POP

By Maya

was the morning of the 68th Independence Day

celebrations and along with the rest of the world,
India was awaiting its new generation Prime Minister
to address the Nation from the Red Fort. What followed
has created history. It is being hailed as one of the best
speeches ever being delivered by a leader. Standing far
apart from his predecessors, the 70 minute extempore
speech has sent ripples of optimism and hope across
a country tired of monotonous, unenthusiastic empty
words. How these translate into action, still remains
to be seen, however, what cannot be ruled out is the
positive impact this has had on not just the morale of
the nation but also the financial markets.
What stood out for a common man is the Prime
Minister referring to himself as the PradhanSewak,
doing away with the bullet proof barrier, communicating
directly with his people and even breaking the security
cordon to meet with little
children that had been waiting
to participate in the celebrations
From the Red Fort that day
MrModi gave us a glimpse of the
renaissance thats tapping at Indias door. Announcing
initiatives that have possibly not been discussed earlier
from that platform. Never before India has known a
Prime Minister that addresses the (non existant) state
of toilets in the country or checking the sons on what
they have been getting upto.
As MrModi stands at the helm of his first 100 days
as the Prime Minister, he stands tall before the country
with a few bright feathers in his cap. One such bright
feather is the launch of the governments financial
inclusion plan the PradhanMantri Jan DhanYogna.
The Salient features of this plan are : This is the
largest financial services sector exercise ever in the
country where one and a half crore bank accounts
were opened via almost 80,000 camps in rural and
urban areas, along with the same number of insurance
policies, which is being claimed as a national record
for most number of accounts opened in a day.
Through this, at least 7.5 crore households will get
basic bank accounts by January 25, 2015. Being rolled
out in two phases- in the first phase, each household is

to get an account and a debit card. Upon satisfactory

operation of the account for six months, the account
holder will get aRs 5000 overdraft facility. Modi
says having a debit card will help counter the current
economic apartheid in the country. In the second phase,
all households that open such bank accounts under the
Jan DhanYojana will get Rs 1 lakh accident insurance
for 1.5 crore people. MrModi explained that the poor
face considerable out-of-pocket expenses in medical
emergencies; in the lack of formal credit facility
through banking channels, this pushes them into debttraps.
All those who open accounts by January will get Rs
30,000 life insurance over and above the Rs 100,000
accident insurance. Again, this will ease financial
pressure on lower-income sections, who are often left
with no source of income when the primary earning
member passes away.
As you study the yojana in
detail you realize how this is
likely to positively effect other
related sectors like banking,
insurance, building, telecom, post and telegraph,
communicationetcetc.
This is indeed set out to be MrModis first
blockbuster that is likely to improve the lives of millions
of poor Indians by bringing them into the financial
mainstream and freeing them from the clutches of the
moneylenders while giving them the safety net of an
insurance cover.
MrModi seems to have taken India by a storm
and is making the right moves, then whether it is all
eyes on Varanasi from his trip to Kyoto-Japan or the
impending Summit Of the Year in USA later this
year. While he wears a shrewd politicians head on
his shoulders, he wears his heart on his sleeve for the
children the future of our country. So as all schools
around the country gear up to be addressed by our
Prime Minister, it is safe to say that finally India is
rising to claim its rightful place in the world. India is
Modi-fied!!

India Modi-fied

His policies are all inclusive, so the

growth in any sector is bound to affect
all the sections of society. He is a technosavvy diplomat who stays well connected
with his people. His leadership is meant

He believes in keeping his promises. He
promised the Jan-DhanYogna on the 15th
of August and it was implemented on the
28th of August NeeluRaut New Delhi
Finally a scheme to help the poor
secure his life and savings at zero cost.
They get all the modern facilities of an
online account and a debit card too. Six

holders can avail Rs 5,000 loan from the
bank. Another superb initiative from the
Modi government. VedantKaushal,

Our educational system broken somewhere

By Nivedita

elebrated writer Chetan Bhagat feels that

the college cutoffs should not bog one
down because hard work can also take people
places, adding that the countrys education
system is broken somewhere.
A student securing 98 percent is no less
capable or intelligent than the one securing
99 percent. The emphasis on cut offs every
year just goes on to show that the educational
system is broken somewhere, Bhagat, an
IIT-Delhi and IIM-Ahmedabad alumnus, told
IANS in an email interaction from Mumbai.
One should not feel dejected after being
rejected, as there is a place for everyone,
Bhagat believes.
Students can survive even without
securing the highest cutoff because that
definitely does not set the standard of the
quality of education he or she has been getting
since childhood, said the 40-year-old.
Equipped with the best qualifications,
he enjoyed a high-profile banking job for 11
years, but decided to move away from number
crunching to writing. And the rest is history.

As a writer, he raised the bar by churning

out bestsellers like Five Point Someone,
The 3 Mistakes of My Life, and 2 States
and most of his novels have been adapted into
successful movies.
I believe hard work can take people
to places. I have IIT and IIM degrees, but
currently in my scope of work in Bollywood,
the degrees are irrelevant.
My work speaks for itself and thats how
it should be for people in the professional

world, said Bhagat, who penned the

screenplay for Salman Khan-starrer Kick,
which has crossed the Rs.100 crore mark at
the box office.
As a father too Bhagat would never compel
his twins - Ishaan and Shyam - to follow in his
footsteps.
Honestly, it would give me enormous joy
to see my kids to be a part of IIT and IIM.
But they are free to choose a career of their
choice as long as they are happy. As a father
I will completely support their choices,
said Bhagat, who is married to his college
classmate Anusha.
Amidst the traditional education system,
new modes of teaching are evolving and
Bhagat has teamed up with DTH-provider Tata
Sky to promote its TV Is Good campaign.
As a parent I am very well aware of the
fact that kids today are exposed to a lot of
content on television as well as on the internet,
some useful, some harmful, as compared to
the past, he said.
Sometimes it is difficult for a parent to

keep a tab on the content that is accessible to

their kids.
But at the same time, if they are guided
well by parents to experience the right content,
kids can actually end up grasping a lot more
than the limited knowledge that they are
exposed to in schools, he added.
A picture can tell a thousand words and
visual learning can equip children for bigger
goals in life.
Visual learning has greater impact
than text book learning as children are more
receptive to things they witness visually.
While books prepare the children in subjects
like maths and science that help them secure a
job, the learning required to win in life is not
limited to these books, he said.
Bhagat is also ready with his next book,
a love story based in the semi-rural setting of
India between a rural boy and an urban girl.
Its slated for release in October, he said.

Indian jockey wins womens Polish trophy

Indian jockey Rupa Narpat Singh won

a thrilling race to win the Ladies World
Championship at the Sluzewicz race course here.
It was a fantastic win where 10 women jockeys
from various countries were invited to participate
and the 32-year-old showed her talent and class to
win in tricky rainy conditions.
Hats off to Rupa who showed her skill in
a such a short time and that too where jockeys
were forbidden to use a whip, said Andrezej
Wojtowicz, the trainer of the winning horse,
Nicolas, Sunday.

What had helped Rupa to win this

championship was her light weight, as she is
only 48 kg, and her tremendous experience over
the years, added Wojtowicz, a renowned Polish
jockey of past years and now a successful trainer.
Rupa hails from a horse loving family and
since the age of 13 she has been riding horses.
She has already won more than 500 races in 3,000
outings.
A young lady of her talent can create wonders
with her dedication anywhere, observed Josef
Siwonia, a leading Polish trainer.

I smell horses and horses smell me, Rupa

told IANS.
It is great to be in Poland though my visit
is extremely short but I would like to come
for a longer stint here on this beautiful track,
she added.
The Shikha Fatima Bint Mubarak
Championship Cup was sponsored by the United
Arab Emirates (UAE) Ministry of Tourism
which has selected Poland this year to promote
cultural and touristic activities.
Poland has a long tradition of breeding
Arabian horses and every year it exports horses
worth millions of dollars. Now, the UAE is
showing keen interest to tap the Polish market
as many princes and wealthy businessmen are
proclaiming their love for horses.
Poland is relatively a new market for us but
we are happy to realise that soon our people will
come to choose Polish horses. They have many
world class stud farms and many of their horses
have won many classic races in Europe over
the years, said Asim Mirza Al Rahmah, UAEs
ambassador to Poland.
No doubt it was a great experience to see
an Indian lady jockey win the first Ladies World
Championship in Poland. There should be more
participants from Asia, particularly from India.
Poland is truly on the global radar screen for horse
lovers. The UAE should be congratulated for
organising a day for Arabian horses in Warsaw,
said Davinder Singh, an Indian businessman who
owns a few horses here. - IANS

Rahane shines
as India seals
ODI series
Ajinkya Rahanes maiden century and his
century-run stand with Shikhar Dhawan powered
India to a comprehensive nine-wicket win over
England in the fourth ODI in Birmingham,
England this week and also sealed the series 3-0
with still a match to go.
The win will help India ease the pains of the
humiliating 1-3 loss in the Test series.
The last time India played a one-day
international at Birmingham, they lifted the ICC
Champions Trophy 2013.
Little over a year later, they once again made
Edgbaston their happy hunting ground beating
England comprehensively - the same opposition
they faced in the CT final, by nine wickets for
their first bilateral series win in the country in
over two decades.
In what turned out to be a completely onesided affair, England were outplayed hands
down. Their batting was a repeat of the sorry tale
from the previous two ODIs as yet again they
were bowled out cheaply.
India, on the other hand, were as clinical as as
they could have been. Not only did they restrict
their opposition to a below-par total, but also
achieved it with more than 19 overs to spare.
Ajinkya Rahanes maiden ODI ton, followed
by Shikhar Dhawans return to form with an
unbeaten 97 (11x4, 4x6), ensured India lived
up to their reputation as the worlds number
one side.

Weaving ancient heritage with chic design

15 Kiwi fashion design students join
hands to create western outfits made from
traditional Indian
textiles. Their work
is showcased at the
New Zealand Fashion
Week
Paula Ray
It is time for the eponymous little black dress
(LBD) to move over and make way for a group
of young Kiwi fashion designers who have
converted traditional hand-woven saris from
sourced from south India into contemporary
garments worthy of the runway. Each of their
creations is inspired by jewel-like hues of Resene,
the same paint colour brand that sponsored them

at the New Zealand Fashion Week this year.

The spectrum of colours has been given names
like Smitten pink, Daredevil orange, Sublime
green. But the actual project is educational one
that spans the hemispheres and has the support of
two countries at its helm, namely India and New
Zealand.
The project began when Kevin Smith and
Val Marshall-Smith, founders and owners
of the fashion institute, NZ Fashion Tech,
teamed up with educators Giles Brooker and
Prabha Govindasamy. Together they shaped a
unique New Zealand-India fashion education
collaboration, whereby 50 silk saris inspired by
paint colours from Resene were selected. Then
45 students from NZ Fashion Techs Diploma
courses in Auckland and Wellington were briefed
to design a contemporary look from the delicate
textile.
In the end, 15 students were chosen to take part in
the project to travel to India for five weeks near the
end of their academic year, as recipients of Prime
Ministers Scholarships for Asia worth $86,000
approximately. The students will be hosted
by Bannari Amman Institute of Technology
in Tamil Nadu, India, thus bringing together a
unique education collaboration between the two

countries.
Kevin Smith Managing Director of NZ Fashion
Tech says: The students responded well to the
brief. Armed with their Resene test pot and sari,
they were asked (hypothetically) to dress Cate
Blanchett for a summer luncheon in Monte Carlo.
Technical excellence was paramount, the timeline
was tight, and the stakes were high: Who would
show at Fashion Week? Who would catch the eye
of editors? And ultimately: Who would travel to
India?
Doddampalayam is the village just outside of
Sathyamangalam in Southern India where the silk
saris being used in this project were hand-woven
(70kms from the city of Coimbatore.) Giles

Brooker, who is co-organising the Indian leg of

the project, says: It feels like the whole village
is the factory. Houses left, right and centre have a
room with a central loom or a showroom for their
finished work. Its a very communal activity for
the families - men and women, young and old - all
weaving or contributing in one way or another to
the enterprise.
A project of this magnitude is expected to succeed
on several levels for both New Zealand and India.
Potentially, the organisers believe that there will
be benefits across tourism awareness, community
engagement, design, manufacturing, trade and
education. The total programme will cover eight
weeks, of which five will be run in India.

Complement rather than compete

Prabha Govindasamy is one of the directors at Giles Brooker
Education, instrumental in making this particular collaboration a
success. Her association with Brooker goes back by four years, as the
two of them have joined hands on many projects to bring out the best of
the educational offerings in the two countries New Zealand and India.
Govindasamy says that none of these 15 students have been to India
before. So the experience is expected to be quite overwhelming for
them. The project will end with another fashion show at their host
institution in India.
One of the main reasons for choosing a group, and not opt for one
single student, for the project is because it is geared towards encouraging
collaborative learning experiences. Govindasamy adds, It is best to
complement rather than compete when it comes to cultural exchange.

Glitz and Glamour

The Lakme India Fashion Week, one of the biggest fashion events in India, showcased the festive winter collection with all glitz and glamour. The show dazzled

with collections of many a well-known designer. Several celebrities from B-Town walked the ramp, displaying creations of different designers. These include Manish Malhotra, Masaba Gupta, Shantanu and Nikhil, among others.

With an array of futuristic and creative looks swaying down the ramp, Lakme Fashion Week lived up to its much-celebrated glory.

Shah Rukh not getting threats

Kids show Motu Patlu

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan

has reportedly got threats from a gangster,
but a source close to the actor-producer
denied the news saying it is untrue.
Media reports said that Shah Rukh
and his residence Mannat here got tight
security from the Mumbai police after
gangster Ravi Pujari tried to get in touch
with him Monday afternoon. However,
a source close to the movie icon, says
otherwise.
Shah Rukh has not got any such calls.
We wonder why such rumours are being
spread, the source told IANS.
Following rounds of firing that took place
at Kareem Morani of Morani Brothers
residence, who are close to SRK, security around the actor is said to have been
upped.
When contacted, a police official told
IANS: He has been given police protection for a long time now. So why is there
so much of talk about it?
Shah Rukh, who has worked with the
Morani Brothers on his Temptations

Actors Deepika Padukone and Arjun Kapoor have

unveiled Shake your bootiya, the second song
from their forthcoming film Finding Fanny. With
a creative video and peppy tune, the song has a
unique feel.
Penned by the duo Sachin-Jigar, the song Shake
your bootiya has been sung in a quirky way by
Divya Kumar.
Talking about the song and its picturisation, Deepika said: We have done nothing in the song. The
only thing we had to do was shooting the beginning
of the doll house portion, where there was actually
this really cute doll house that we had made.
We all had to take up our position and imagine
a reaction and the rest of it all is imaginary...so we
have actually done nothing.
Further Deepika revealed that there are just two
songs in the film including Fanny re.
Also featuring Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapur
and Dimple Kapadia, Finding Fanny will hit
the theatres Sep 12. It features Ranveer Singh in a
cameo.

Rohit Shetty to direct 'Ram

Lakhan' remake
Filmmaker Karan Johar is set to produce the remake
of Subhash Ghai's 1989 film "Ram Lakhan" in association with the latter's Mukta Arts. Hit director
Rohit Shetty has been roped in to helm the project.
"Here's the big announcement! Rohit Shetty &
Karan Johar, in association with Mukta Arts, present
RAM LAKHAN in 2016," read a message from the
official Twitter handle of Karan's Dharma Productions, Friday.
The original "Ram Lakhan" featured an ensemble
cast that included Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Madhuri Dixit, Dimple Kapadia and Raakhee. However,
the actors for the remake are yet to be locked.
Ever since the news of a remake hit the social
media, people have been suggesting the pairing of
"Student Of The Year" actors Varun Dhawan and
Sidharth Malhotra or "Gunday" stars Ranveer Singh
and Arjun Kapoor for it.

Auckland celebrates onam in style

Thashika Thangamma

The Malayali community of Auckland got together at the Mahatma Gandhi Centre
to usher in the harvest festival

Auckland celebrated Onam this year on the 30th

Clad in traditional attire, with the laughter of joy
echoing, the Malayali community welcomed the
festival Onam. It is the harvest festival that is celebrated by the people of Kerala, India. The festival
takes place during the Malayalam month, Chingam,
as per the Malayali calendar, which comes in between the months of August and September.
This harvest festival is celebrated in honour of Lord
Vishnus Vamana Avatar and also celebrates the
homecoming of King Mahabali, who was considered
the ideal King of Kerala. The festival is celebrated
with a lot of joy and devotion with family and
friends. Cultural elements like Vallam Kali, Pulikkali, Pookkalam, Onatthappan, Thumbi Thullal,

Onavillu, Kazhchakkula. Onapottan, Atthachamayam and the likes add flavour to the festivity.
The Auckland Malayali community celebrated
Onam with a lot of enthusiasm and devotion, bringing out the essence of the festival by following the
traditions and customs just as they are in Kerala. The
event started with Sadhya, the Onam feast, which
comprised of a variety of traditional sweets and savouries along with the meal. The evening proceeded
with a variety of cultural programmes, each bringing
out the spirit of Kerala that emotionally transported
most of the audience present at the venue back to
their home country.
Close to the tradition do try and celebrate the festival
keeping the traditional and rituals alive.

The Menons

Onam is a festival of harvest. The 10th day of

Atham is celebrated as Onam. As a family, we get
along to lay the flower carpet. First, we place Thrikkakkarappan (a clay pyramid structure with four
faces and a flat top) as a symbol of diety, Mahabali.
Then, we do a pooja and remove the Thrikkak-

karappan after four days. On the day of Onam, we

make the Sadhya and celebrate the festival. We meet
friends and family to share good wishes. In this way,
we try to keep the traditions alive in Auckland, so
that our kids are also familiar with the traditions and
customs back home.

Onam is a festival of social gathering. It is an occasion for friends and family to get together. We
celebrate the festival with a lot of enthusiasm and
happiness. The women of the family get together and
lay the flower carpet, which is the Attapookolam,
in front of the house. We prepare the Onam feast,

called Onam Sadhya, that has a variety of dishes

from savoury to sweet. We, then, dressed up in our
traditional attire and welcome our family and guests.
In Auckland, we gather in a hall with our friends and
celebrate it through music and dance.

Taking a rinse check

Zara Iqbals Killer Mouthwash project seeks to determine the effectiveness of the healthcare product across many brands

Thashika Thangamma

Zara Iqbal, a 13-year-old child prodigy, was awarded the

first place at the National Institute of Water and Atmosphere
research, Manukau region science fair for her innovative
projecton Killer Mouthwash. This young mastermind
took her love for science to another level through this
project and has been successful in her inventions bringing
laurels to her school and family.
Zaras project Killer Mouthwashfocused on finding
the ingenuity of the claims made by various mouthwash
brands and the effectiveness of the products. I chose to
investigate the effectiveness
of mouthwash as we had
many brands of mouthwash in
our house, all claiming to do
amazing things for the health
of our mouth. I wanted to find
out whether they did what
they promised, said Zara
about her project.
In a science laboratory, I grew and measured
Micrococcus sp and Staphylococcus sp both are live
bacteria. Listerine Zero and Pams were the least effective
against both bacteria, both inhibiting and killing no bacteria.
Macleans was the most effective against Micrococcus
sp and Sarakin,a herbal mouthwash, inhibited the most
bacteria against Staphylococcus sp,added Zara, while
explaining her laboratory experiments for the project.
Zaras interest for science started at a very early age.
Being abright and diligent child, she has won many awards
that back her ingenuity. Recollecting Zaras childhood
memories, her mother Clara Iqbal said, We first realized
that Zara had a flair and real interest in the sciences when
her primary school, Willow Bank Primary, selected Zara for
a talentprogramme. At that time, she was in year 5- 6, and
she talked about it all the time. All her conversationswere
about science that was understood primarily by her father.

I am sure there is some genetic influence as her father is

a microbiologist. But the other really important aspect, I
think, was the exposure to science at an early age.
I think her successes have definitely enabled her to
realize that she not only enjoys, but excels, in the area,
says Zaras mother, adding, Zara received specialist
science awards in both years at intermediate;something we
are all incredibly proud of.
Zaras father, Zak Iqbal, has been her mentor throughout.
When asked about his daughters achievements, the proud
father says, I was thrilled at
the success Zara achieved at
the recent science fair. She had
put immense time, effort and
thought into her project.So it
was great to see her efforts
recognized. Zara has been
extremely well supported and
encouraged by her science teacher at St Kentigern College,
Catherine May. She has also been fortunate to have
passionate science teachers at intermediate and primary
schools.
Speaking highly of Zaras achievement, Catherine May
said, She has a keen sense of enquiry. She conducted
a smart and well-founded investigation based on her
scientific knowledge and experiences. Zara entered the
competition on her own initiative which demonstrates her
self-motivation. She genuinely deserves this success.
Duncan McQueen, the head of school, himself a science
specialist, was very proud to acknowledge the personal
endeavor and investigative spirit that Zara demonstrated in
completing her project. It was a credit to her passion for
the sciences, which the college was keen to encourage for
all learners, he said. With young achievers like Zara, it is
evident that the future of New Zealands scientific research
is in promising hands.
